TJ Valle won the Raymour & Flanigan Slug Fest Angler of the Years Series

on Sodus Bay. TJ brought a bag of mostly smallmouth to scales that weighed 20.31 lbs. TJ also had lunker in his bag, a 5.33 lb. smallmouth.TJ said, “I practiced Saturday for about 5 hours and did very well. Every area I went to I would drive and graph to find not very big pods of fish, but they were catchable. On tournament day, I was very excited because the bite was very good the day prior. I became nervous when my primary only produced one fish by 8:30 a 4.5 lb. smallie, so onto plan B. Plan B seem to be the ticket, I caught my other four fish and the lunker of a 5.33 smallmouth. The bite pretty much died after that. I headed back to the bay to cull a small 2 lb fish. It didn’t take long. I haven’t fished the bay in like three years so I relied on history and it worked out. I caught about 15 largemouth in the bay from about 1pm till check in. The smallmouth were all caught on a DS with either a Yamamoto Shad shape with the new Neko hook or a Keitech Shad impact The largemouth in the bay were caught on moving baits period. The key to success in the lake was my new Minn Kota Ultrex and my Humminbird 360. I was able to stay on my spots with spot lock and see my target with my Humminbird 360.”

Nate Kalpin took 2nd Place with 18.68 lbs. Nate said, “Sodus Bay has always been one of those love-hate places for me. Personally, I hate the bay, historically I have caught good fish when “fun fishing”, but when it comes tournament time, I would always fumble. With the Lake open, it turns into a love affair. Lake Ontario offers so many options in finding brown fish. Sometimes you only need to run 5 miles, sometimes you can run 95 miles or more to find the fish you want. For me, this time, the latter. I had no plans to be moving around the lake so much, practice was good to me. I thought it would be a slug fest and I would be able to catch a good bag early, and smooth sail the rest of the day. Tournament time, that didn’t happen. The first 10 minutes of fishing started off great, my third and fourth casts boated two decent smallies. My next spot produced fish number 3 about 25 minutes later, and the next spot after that, fish 4. It would be at least another hour or so before getting my fifth fish. At this point it was about 10:15 AM, I estimated about 13 lbs. in the livewell, and I knew the forecast was calling for a wind shift to the east. I made the decision to head back to Sodus. Surprisingly it only took roughly 45 minutes to get back, and the lake had laid down a bit. We began to fish around Sodus in some isolated areas in the lake where I would pick up a 3.5 lb. fish after only fishing it for 2-3 minutes and upgraded from a small 1 pound fish I had. My experience on this spot is that it only usually produces 1 good fish, at least when there are fish on it, just so happens the right one was there that day and bit. From there I began to run west of Sodus as we still had more than half the day left to fish. My next area produced no fish, I did see another club member in the area, as well as a fishing legend. However, I did decide to continue my travels further west about 5 more miles. I was pretty happy about this decision, within 10 minutes I had boated 2 more fish and culled up twice. At this point, I estimated about 16-17 lbs. in the box. Before leaving that area, I fished for about an hour or so, I boated a 3rd fish and culled up again, leaving there with somewhere around 17.5 lbs. At this point, I had only used 1 rod all day to catch fish, I was throwing a dropshot

with a ½ oz. weight, then downgraded to 3/8 oz. I must have retied my line about 15 times in the day and lost about 10 drop shot sinkers. I was using 10 lb. straight flouro, and my fish came from 18-40 foot of water. I had to fizz every single fish.Having about an hour left in the day we decided to run back into the bay to try and get my non boater some fish, I knew of a few spots that I had caught fish on the week prior that would help him, and also the possibility of a kicker for me. We hit our first spot, where he boated a 12 incher pretty quickly, and we spent a good majority of the remaining time there; I was launching a Brown Dog Tackle Co. A-rig hoping for a big bite that just didn’t happen. Like all them basic chic’s that drink pumpkin spice Starbuck’s and wear Ugg boots, we decided to be “basic” and go hang by the check-in and fish around until the time was up (along with about 15 other boats). It was 3:18 PM, and I was thinking about the day and how I had to run all over the place to get fish, and not knowing how it would fair against others, I was in auto pilot mode casting and retrieving my A-rig. As I reeled in one of my final casts, I was looking at the bait coming up next to the boat and just as I

went to pull it out of the water for the next cast, a 4.44 lb. largemouth came out from under the boat and destroyed the rig. It took me by complete surprise, and almost ripped the rod straight out of my hands. Not having even enough line to even boat flip him or fight him I panicked and started free spooling my baitcaster in order to get a handle on him, in a matter of about 40 seconds, My non boater, Orlando Roman, had him in the net. Not knowing which fish was my smallest now, I had to go through every single fish and figure out which one to upgrade, the largemouth definitely anchored my bag and gave me a good pound or so upgrade. I just happen

to get lucky throwing the big bait and being in the right place at the right time, I have no complaints about the day, as I fished clean, boat ran great, and we didn’t get rained on. My season has not been as good as I wanted, but this definitely helps put me in the right direction heading into our last two events. I hope to come into Cayuga with some momentum and finish out the season strong. Thanks again to my non-boater, Orlando Roman, for being quick with the net all day and helping me land my bag.”

Rod Brown caught about 20 fish and brought in 17.91 lbs. for 3rd Place. Rod said, “I had a good top water bite Thursday morning in the bay. My 1st 1.5 hours I had about 15 pounds which made me think I should start there, but I decided to chase the smallies. I headed off to Oswego instead. In practice had found them in 21-23 ft. and eating. They were there Sunday, but not biting. I managed a 14 incher, but I began to worry I may have f&*#@d up by not going for those largemouth. Then I would slide off the shallower fish into the 26-28 ft. fish, which were biting. There wasn’t the numbers, but I could drop on them and get bit. This lasted for maybe an hour then they just left….to where I couldn’t find them in the time remaining. The wind report trended to it shifting westerly and increasing so we left @ 10:40 with only a little over 3 hours of fishing time in. I lost a true toad when she spit the hook 2 ft. out of the water at boat side. We returned to the bay and caught some, but nothing to help me further. My partner Drew Damtoft was a real asset to have on my boat for his great conversation and exemplary netting skills….thx Drew!”

Jon Skirment came in 4th Place with 16.00 lbs. of all smallmouths. Jon said, “The weather was a little sketchy in the morning. Fortunately it missed us, and we made the game time decision to make a long run. Unfortunately the bigger bites just never showed up. Between myself and my non-boater Tyler Muhs, we boated between 15-20 fish, and they bit pretty consistently throughout the day. They were all just 3 pound class fish. It slowed at the end, but we were also fishing a smaller area closer to the launch site.

We were forced to drift areas most of the day due to wind and waves. All my bites came on a tube.”

Jim Shamp took 5th Place with 15.30 lbs. Jim said, “I caught most of my fish flipping jigs and big plastic worms.”

Rich Bush had 6th Place with 15.10 lbs. Rich caught his fish out in the lake on a dropshot.

The final spot in the Top Seven in 7th Place was Dom Cerasuolo. Dom said, “I caught my fish on Senkos and flipping worms. I had a great day and culled 4-5 times. My partner Ray Sacheli also had a great day except he didn’t follow the rules on my boat he caught 2 pike. All in all, I had a great partner and a great day!”

14-year-old angler catches 14-pounder

HUNTINGDON, Tenn. — Rein Golubjatnikov, 14, of the Rochester Jr. Bassmasters in New York set the hook like he would any other time he gets a bite from a bass. He glimpsed the fish preparing to jump out of the water and thought little of it. After all, Golubjatnikov didn’t really care whether he caught the bass because he was practice-fishing for the Bassmaster Junior National Championship.

What ensued, though, he may never forget: A behemoth bass thrashed at the boat and made a wake of its own with a simple headshake.

Golubjatnikov’s partner, Matthew Pitcher, netted the fish, which not only proved to be the young angler’s personal best bass, it pushed the Tennessee state record of 15.2 pounds. The beast

weighed 14 pounds, 2 ounces on their scale, after multiple tests to confirm it, and it was accepted as the Carroll County 1,000-Acre Recreational Lake record. If they didn’t before, the New Yorkers now have a soft spot in their heart for Huntingdon, Tennessee.

“It was a fish of a lifetime for me,” Rein said. “It was so awesome! I never expected to catch one that big, even though I had caught my biggest fish here last year.”

Golubjatnikov placed second in the 2017 Bassmaster Junior Championship while fishing solo. He led the event going into the final day, but eventually came up just shy of the championship title. Last year, he boated two bass that beat his personal best weights in succession, an 8-pounder and then a 9-pounder.

Golubjatnikov and Pitcher could have used the 14-pounder when competition began Tuesday. They managed five bass weighing a total of 10 pounds, which places them in second, just 3 ounces behind the team of Jeremy Monda and Will Boyd of the Quincy Bassmasters in Florida. Pitcher caught the team’s biggest bass, a 5-1 largemouth.

“We decided to practice an area similar to the one that produced for Rein last year,” said Ken Golubjatnikov, Rein’s father and boat captain. “That was in June, so the fish were in a di¡erent pattern than this year’s conditions. The same spot produced for us, at least in practice this year.”

The magic lure was an “old school” Berkley Power Worm that is no longer in production. Long a fan of the bait, Ken bought bundles of 100-packs back in the 1990s while competing on grass roots tournament trails.

Rein has used the worm selection and color choice to great success, and they have given him increasing confidence in fishing o¡shore, especially in the South. His Humminbird 360 sonar system also played a role in the catch of a lifetime as they saw the fish on the graph and made a cast towards it.

“You often see big markings in front of the boat or below and you cast to them even if you’re unsure whether they’re fish,” Ken said. “This bass came moments after they caught a pound-and-a-half fish.”

The third aspect that made the catch possible was a custom map of Carroll County’s 1,000-acre Recreational Lake. The map, created by Jason Edmonds, is a handmade map created from side imaging screenshots that are stitched together to show the bottom of the lake with an extremely high level of detail.

“The maps, which were publicly available online have been used by a few teams this week,” Ken said. “It’s very impressive the time spent to create

maps from scratch. I’ve tried to do my own in New York, but Jason is an artist and is on another level. It’s not like we have spots to ourselves, everyone is fishing the good stu¡, but finding a spot on the spot is the deal.”

“The Bassmaster Junior Championship has helped me become a better angler,” Rein said. “We didn’t fish like this in New York before participating in these events. Now we can take techniques and styles back home and catch fish using them. We are only 14 years old, but I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned in the few times we’ve competed here.”

Fun for this duo is sitting in a hotel room in Tennessee as they pour over maps and learn a little bit more about bass fishing each and every day. It’s obviously paying dividends in the short term, but the long-term learning will be even more valuable for this team.
