Worship Schedule

Please note that Zion’s worship

schedule will change on September 9,

2018. Sunday School classes will

begin at 9:15 a.m. and Worship will

begin at 10:30 a.m.

Lately, I’ve tried to meditate ten

minutes a day, with the use of a phone app.

The app guides my breathing and helps me

to practice just being in the present mo-

ment, observant rather than judging.

Which is hard for me. It is SO hard for me to not

judge. To which many of you will say, sarcastically,

“Oh, Pastor, really?? We didn’t know that!”

It’s true, though. And if I can be serious for a mo-

ment, I think it’s a problem most of us have. We are con-

stantly making judgments. They come into our thoughts

before we’re even aware of them. The point of mindful-

ness meditation (or at least one of the points of it) is to

be curious about these judgments we make every day,

nearly every moment.

Judgment is a survival skill, of course. We need to

judge which foods are right for our bodies, what schools

our children might thrive at, which people to trust. But

for most of us, we make snap judgments about nearly

everything. These judgments can intrude our thoughts

and make us unhappy.

Jesus has quite a bit to say about judgment. What he

counsels is not abstaining from judgment altogether

(which would be foolish, not to mention impossible), but

to practice right judgment. As he says in Matthew 7:1-5,

part of the Sermon on the Mount:

“Don’t judge, so that you won’t be judged. 2 You’ll re-

ceive the same judgment you give. Whatever you deal out

will be dealt out to you. 3 Why do you see the splinter

that’s in your brother’s or sister’s eye, but don’t notice

the log in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your

brother or sister, ‘Let me take the splinter out of your

eye,’ when there’s a log in your eye? 5 You deceive your-

self! First take the log out of your eye, and then you’ll

see clearly to take the splinter out of your brother’s or

sister’s eye.”

In order to judge rightly, with mercy, we need to look

at ourselves and how we have fallen short first. Judg-

ment, for Jesus, is not for the sake of condemnation, but

for the sake of correction. But we can’t discern the prob-

lem correctly if we’ve got a huge log sticking out of our

eye (don’t you love that image?).

When we judge just to condemn, we might get a

surge of self-satisfaction. But how long does it last be-

fore we feel empty and miserable?

Jesus, notably, told Nicodemus, “God didn’t send his

Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world

might be saved through him” (John 3:17). Jesus invites

us to come to him, to receive the bread of life and living

water that helps us judge rightly, beginning with our-

selves. That kind of judgment doesn’t lead to condemna-

tion. That kind of judgment leads to salvation.

Love to you all,

Pastor David
