SIZZLING AUGUST NIGHTS AT CYCDespite a week long shutdown for the remodel, we had a large crowd of members in white apparel attend the White Party on August 18th looking as cool as cucumbers as they sipped cocktails and danced the night away. The previous week, many members volun-teered to serve our hard working staff at the Turnabout Party. With the remodel behind us, we have much more fun in store in Septmber! Check it out inside!

CYC Board Highlights

At the August 16th Board of Directors meeting, the following actions were taken:

l Requested a price quote and scope of services for an asset replacement study.

l Approved regatta memberships at the request of the Yachting Committee.

l Approved all applications for membership.

The next board meeting will be September 20th.

aUGUst Was another fantastic month at the Clearwater Yacht Club! We had many great events and it was great to see so many of you participat-ing in so many ways.

The Board of Directors approved a one-week shutdown of the Club in August for an exciting refresh of the upper level interior spaces. The crew kept the Tiki and the kitchen open during the renovations. The dry dock was available for air-conditioned dining as well. If you haven’t seen the changes to the Club yet, stop by and check them out. The result is beautiful!

On Sunday the 12th members hosted the Clearwater Yacht Club staff during the annual Turnabout Party. This year the volunteers were coordinated by Amie Crosby. A HUGE thank you to her for her time and dedication to make this event great. Member Jim Hannigan provided spirits for the team as well--Thanks Jim!

It was great to see members out in their summer whites to celebrate the winding down of the summer season. Lucky for us, winter is a lot like summer at CYC!

See You at the Club!

By Greg Garner, Rear CommodoresUMMeR MaY Be GONe but the fun continues! Even though our Club was closed 10 days for some long overdue sprucing up we managed to have poolside entertain-ment, karaoke, our turnabout party and just before the shut down a fantastic “White Party” hosted by Commodore and Mrs Heimensen. If you were still recovering from Friday night at the tiki bar you might have thought you scored big in the after-life (but no such luck!).

As you read this the kids are back in school, the tour-ists are mostly gone, we’ve had another great Labor Day weekend and most importantly, the construction is done (fingers crossed) and our Club has a whole new, fresh look! Friday night entertainment starts again, and we’ve got a new dance floor for everyone to break in and enjoy. On Saturday the 8th we’ll be having our Grand Re-Opening Party upstairs, hosted by Sandie Ramsden, to show off our new digs and break in the new dance floor.

Always looking for a reason to have fun, the ladies of the entertainment committee are going to host a “Throwback Bash” on Saturday the 22nd on the Dry Dock. Come join us for fun and music of years past and feel free to dress for your favorite period. Another great reason to be part of CYC.

Your entertainment committee meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm. This month we’ll be meeting at 6:00pm and combining with House & Grounds. Please come and be part of making this the great club it is!

It’s your Club – Don’t be a stranger!See you around the Club!

We added a few small projects to the list of dock maintenance needs and we are looking into fixing the WIFI and cable TV situation. There will be some dock maintenance performed during the club shutdown the week of August 20th.

Poor Pegasus is back in the shop, but the rest of the club fleet seems to be in good running order, for the moment. However, they are boats and we all know how that story ends. and now a word on boating safety

The Coast Guard requires boats to have at least one B-1 marine fire extinguisher on board.

Depending on the size of your boat you may need more than one. Boats less than 26’ must have at least one B-1 fire extinguisher on board. Boats 26’-40’ need to have at least two B-1 fire extinguishers on board. If the boat has a USCG approved fire extinguisher system installed for protection of the engine compartment, then the required number may be reduced.Which Fire extinguisher is Right for Me?

A tri-class dry chemical (1A:10BC) extinguisher will meet most boaters’ needs if you have concerns about damage to your electronics or your engine compartment lacks a fixed well. As fire extinguishers are required on most boats, you most likely have one aboard. But chances are, you’ve never needed to use one, and might not know the proper technique for using one. Take the time to read the directions on your fire extinguisher - you might be sur-prised about what it can and can’t do.

There are no waterside meetings scheduled now. If there are any topics or concerns that need to be discussed with the group, please let me know and I will schedule a meeting.

As always, if you see any needed repairs, maintenance or safety issues around our docks, please be sure to let Tom, Linda or myself know.

I can be reached at [email protected] or on my cell by text @ 727-729-2399.

See you around the club!!

Yachting

HOpe eveRYONe enjoyed a great Florida summer!Yachting came back from taking a couple of months

off, ready to hit the ground running. We have added an additional race to the West Florida

PHRF Gulf Series, which we will co-host with St. Pete Yacht Club. It will be a one way run from near Clear-water pass to Pass-a-Grill, and take place on Saturday, October 6th. Boats racing south will be able to arrange overnight berthing at St. Pete Yacht Club at Pass-a-Grill, before returning to Clearwater. With that, and the weather issues we have had, we have elected to move the Clearwater Challenge to the spring. The next one will be held on Sat, March 30, 2019, with the skipper’s meeting and party on Friday, March 29, 2019.

We have been asked to help the Clearwater Com-munity Sailing Center with a couple of regattas this fall. The Kona World Championships (windsurfers) will be held out of the sailing center Oct 26-31, 2018. CYC will be helping by loaning Race Committee gear, and a few of our Race Committee volunteers may choose to help on Race Committee. It’s a great opportunity to see a world championship right here in our local waters.

Member Reinhard Opitz is coordinating the Sunset Cruises – and has arranged for Sunset cruises on Sat, Sept 15th, Sat, Oct 20th, and Sat, Nov 17th. This is open to ALL members. Members with boats, please invite others to go out with you to witness the beautiful sunsets from the water! If you are interested in participating, please contact Reinhard at [email protected].

And for beer can racing, we will be joining Dunedin Boat Club at their upcoming Gulf Races on Sat, Oct 13th at 11:55 a.m., and Sat, Nov 17th at 11:55 a.m. Emails will go out to the “beer can” list the week prior, to remind everyone to sign up. If you are not on that list, and wish to participate, please contact me at [email protected] to be added to the email list.

Hope everyone has the chance to get out on the water this fall.

From: Molly Wagenseil (2 year old Vizsla) & Maggie Wagenseil (8 month old Australian Shepherd)Sunday October 7th at 1:00pm will once again be OUR DAY at CYC. That’s right! It is the annual CYC Blessing of Pets. I will be bringing Father Bob and PT with me, and now it is up to you to motivate your human family to get off their tails and bring you to the Club that after-noon by no later than 1:00pm. A great motivational tool is to make sure they look at the awe-some photos below. Add to that some very furious barking (meowing, squawking, or hissing, as the case may be) around noon

on the 7th and heavy duty scratching at the door….then make a fast dash for the family car and point to the car door. This should do it.I’m looking forward to seeing you guys on October 7th. Till then, stay cool, watch the drool and wag the tail.

MY HOW tiMe AND GULLS FLY! It’s autumn and the snow Gulls are starting to return to the Nest.

Our first sponsored Ladies Luncheon will be on Wednes-day, October 17th. We have a great program scheduled that day. A select few of the Theatre eXceptional actors will perform some musical numbers from their performance, “Bye Bye Birdie.”

If you are not familiar with Theatre eXceptional, a brief statement from their website says, “Theatre eXceptional, an extension of Blue Butterfly Productions, produces two plays every year raising awareness and eliminating the stigma so often placed on disability and mental illness.”

Their performance of “Bye Bye Birdie” will be held Sep-tember 13-16 at the Central Park Performing Art Center (aka Largo Cultural Center.) For more information you can go to their website at: http://www.bluebutterflyproductions.org/theatre-exceptional.

You won’t want to miss our November luncheon. Mark your calendars for November 14th for our luncheon and style show from La Boutique.

December 12th will find the ladies dining around White Elephants and while you are marking your calendar for all the luncheons, please don’t forget Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 15th.

The Gulls will be electing new officers this fall. As any group, we are always looking for new blood, suggestions, volunteers, etc. If you would like to be involved in the coming year, please let me know. We will fill all elected of-fices (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer) as well as a number of appointed offices. I know that we have just the job you have always wanted!

By Rod & Barbara White Cruising Chairpersons

the Cruisers’ august trip to tampa Yacht Club

Braving the heat, thirteen boats cruised to the Tampa Yacht Club for the last regular Cruisers’ get-away of the season. The weekend began with

a Thursday evening docktail wine tasting enjoyed by thirty-two Cruisers and guests hosted by Joan and Don Carter. Each person provided a bottle of wine of an assigned type. After the labels were covered, the group chose their favorite among each group of Sauvignon Blancs, Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs and Cabernet Sauvignons. While enjoying the wines, the group feasted on appetizers provided by all.

The weekend, hosted by Barbara White, included lots of pool time and games during the days, but the evenings were a different story. Friday night the Tampa Yacht Club was hosting their Annual Carolina End of Summer Beach Party. Over 600 mem-bers attended and they invited us to

participate too. The menu included roasted pig, a seafood buffet, carv-ing and dessert stations, plus a low country boil with all the fixings. The champagne flowed all evening. After dinner, everyone danced to a 7-piece band in the ballroom until the wee hours. Saturday night the club pro-vided a private room where twenty-eight Cruisers, including some who drove over just for the day, had dinner. Sunday morning the group enjoyed a breakfast buffet before heading home.

The weekend proved once again, wherever the Cruisers go, we find good food, lots of drinks and FUN!

Commodore’s Cruise sept. 27-30

We are excited to announce the 2018 Commodore’s Cruise Dates - this year the group will take off for beautiful Long Boat Key September 27-30. Past Commodore Cardosi and Commodore Heimensen along with their wives, Phyllis and Abbey, are thrilled to host this annual tradition.

What’s in store for this fun-filled weekend you ask? Well, of course we will have the usual favorites of Thursday night docktails and a Saturday trip to St. Armand’s Circle for shopping. To entice you even more, our friends at Bird Key Yacht Club are anxiously awaiting to host us for dinner on Friday evening (theme night—stay tuned!) We will be having a fun and relaxing dinner at the Dry Dock on Saturday evening.

All CYC members are invited to enjoy this fun event, contact the

ter trip aboard the Double Eagle with CYC members for $40 per person. Bring your own food and drinks or buy them on the boat. We will have the entire boat, but there is limited availability, so reserve early. Then on Sunday, we will be hosting an All-You-Can-Eat Fish Fry, with live entertain-ment, raffle prizes and games.

The highlight of Sunday afternoon will be the Second Annual Potato Derby Races, hosted by Gary and Sondra Newcom. Each participant will create a “derby car” from a po-tato and a few other provided items.

The “cars” will race each other, until a single winner emerges. There will be prizes for the fastest and most creative potato.

A committee is planning this week-end – all volunteers are welcome! We especially need raffle items. If you or your business would like to donate items, please contact our raffle chairman, Linda Dorn at [email protected]. All proceeds will be used to enhance CYC ameni-ties. Last year’s proceeds purchased audio visual equipment used during events and presentations.

The final Cruisers’ event this year will be the Annual Cruise-In November 9-11 at the CYC.

If you’d like to join any of our cruises, make your reservation with me well in advance or you may not get a slip. You can reach me at 813-300-4176 or by email at [email protected]. Non-boaters are always welcome to drive and join in the fun!

Join the Cruisers on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm in the Dry Dock to socialize and plan up-coming trips. Most head upstairs after-wards for dinner. Everyone is welcome!

Cruisers’ Committee Chair Rod White at [email protected]. For those that don’t want to travel by boat, there will be a block of rooms reserved at a nearby hotel. The tradi-tion of shirts at the docktail party will continue, so when reserving your

spot, in addition to your boat size and how many people are attending, please let Rod know each attendee’s shirt size.

Don’t miss this great weekend as we celebrate with our current and past Commodores!

Sailing ActivitiesBy Jim english

FAMILY SAILING FUN!JUNiOR sailiNG pROGRaMs have always been an integral part of the life and traditions of the Clearwater Yacht Club. The future of yachting starts with the education, learning and fun these kids enjoy during the summer sailing camps. The passion for sailing that the program instills in the campers is a key building block to fu-ture connections with the CYC and life on the water. A big THANK YOU goes out to the Rotary Club of Indian Rocks Beach and to Clearwater Yacht Club leadership and staff for sponsoring and supporting this summer’s programs.

Friday August 10th marked the final day of the IRFSA summer sailing camp season at CYC. We were blessed with steady 12 knot winds and the young sailors put on an impressive show for their families. Following the demon-strations, the sailors received their medals and Clearwater’s Mayor George Cretekos addressed the campers and their guests. Mayor Cretekos reminded us of what it means to be an intrepid sailor with an inspir-ing speech and then thanked all of the community organizations that work together to support the program. The graduation program concluded with a fabulous picnic lunch provided by CYC.

We reached about 70 individual sailors this summer with repeat campers bringing the total number of summer camp participants to just over 100. Planning for the Fall/Winter season and for next year’s camp is underway, with the IRFSA annual meeting scheduled for Wednesday, August 22nd at 6:45 p.m. at CYC. Please send an email to [email protected] if you are interested in helping us out or join us in person or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/indianrocksfamilysailing/.

As always, we wish you fair winds, following seas, and safe boating!

Have YOU seeN tHe ClUB? Wow! We made it through an amazing remodel.

I would like to personally thank our very own Deb Aune for all her input and decorating touches to our beautiful club. I would also like to thank Celeste Smallwood, Helen Correia, and Phyllis Cardosi. From paint to trim, fixtures and finishing touches, the transition of our Club was largely in part to their influence. Tom and his team had a very large part in scheduling the many moving pieces of this project. Thanks Tom and team!

August was another fun-filled month at the Club. We had the 3rd and final session of this year’s Youth Sailing with the successful graduation of some more Intrepid Sailors. Camp Director Ned Covel and his team of volunteers make it all happen. These efforts do not go unnoticed and we thank them all for mold-

ing the young people who are the future of sailing and hopefully a few more Olympians to add to our list.

Our Annual Employee Turnabout Party was the larg-est and most fun ever! Amie Crosby was the lead this year getting the food and items needed to make this an event our employees won’t soon forget. Thank you to all who joined in and thanked the employees for all they do for us every other day of the year.

Although many fun groups do an annual White Party to celebrate the end of summer, we at CYC just look for another reason to have FUN at our CLUB. This annual event was complete with glasses of sparkling white wines, delicious appetizers, nice music and very well-dressed members and guests. Thanks for coming out in your whitest of whites and enjoying the Club.

As we get ready to start welcoming back our northern members and show off the newly remodeled upper level, I thank all who have supported the Club this summer.

See you at the Club!

It’s all in a name. Does your boat have a unique name? Something fun-ny? Something catchy? Has a hidden meaning?

Send Bob Griffin your boat’s name and tell us why you named your boat that. What is the hidden story?

Some of the more catchy names will be listed and maybe photographed.

Send your boat names directly to [email protected]. Results will appear in the October Compass.

The Coast Guard’s Worst Accidents, Wartime and Non-wartimeResearched by Bob Griffin, CYC MEMBER

the UsCG Blackthorn accident, in 1980 was the worst non-wartime accident in Coast Guard history, when 23 men lost their lives. It happened in a collision of two ships in the channel near the Skyway Bridge.

But the worst Coast Guard accident in history also has ties to Tampa Bay.

The attack on the USCGC TAMPA happened on September 26, 1918, during World War I—100 years ago this month. It was attacked by a German sub and 133 people and crew-men lost their lives.

First some History: The USCGC TAMPA was built in 1912 and was originally

named the USCGC MIAMI. It was built in Newport News, Virginia, at a cost of $250,000. About this same time, the RMS Titanic had collided with an iceberg (April 14, 1912) in the north Atlantic and the US government had assigned a fleet of ships to patrol the northern routes in the winter and keep watch for floating icebergs.

When she was not patrolling for icebergs, she spent the rest of the year in Key West, Florida with other responsi-bilities. She came to Tampa often and participated in the annual Gasparilla Festivals in 1914 through 1917.

With the beginning of World War 1, the USCGC TAMPA was amalgamated into the present Coast Guard. In February of 1916, three days before the Gasparilla Carnival and South Florida Fair, her name was of-ficially changed to the USCGC TAMPA.

She also participated in the Annual Motor Boat Regatta in Miami and in March of 1916, she patrolled the races of the St Petersburg Yacht Club in St Petersburg.

Then in February of 1917, things changed. On February 2nd, the United States broke off diplomatic relations with Germany. February was to be her last Gasparilla Festival. On

April 6th, the United States declared war on Germany and the USCGC TAMPA and other Coast Guard cutters were transferred to the Navy. She was sent to the shipyards in Boston and upgraded with heavy weapons. She was ordered to duty over-seas by September. She went to Gibraltar in October of 1917.

Her new mission had nothing to do with icebergs and Key West. She was to protect convoys from submarine attacks. In little more than a year, the USCGC TAMPA escorted 18 convoys, comprising a total of 350 vessels, through U-boat infested waters from Gibraltar to Great Britain.

On September 26, 1918, the USCGC TAMPA was escorting a new convoy to Milford Haven, England. Late that afternoon, she departed company of the convoy in the Irish Sea and headed back to Milford Haven. That evening she was at-tacked by one torpedo from UB-91, a German U-Boat.

All 131 Crewmen and passengers were lost. This included 111 Coast Guardsmen, 4 US Navy men, a Captain of the British Army, 10 seamen for the Royal Navy, and five British Civilian dock workers.

There have been a number of monuments and memorials established in the honor of the USCGC TAMPA and her crew. The City of Tampa erected a monument listing the names of her crew. And in Arlington, there is a Tampa Memorial. In 1999, the Coast Guard posthumously awarded each member of the USCGC Tampa crewmen a Purple Heart.

To this day, this is the worst disaster by a US Coast Guard ship in American History.

General Manager’s LetterBy tom Brusini, General Manager

for organizing this awesome, once-a-year shindig for your hardworking crew!

A new party brought to you by your Entertainment

Committee: Saturday, September 22nd will be our very first “Throwback Party!” Hosted by Christy Crist, Olivia Prince, Amie Crosby and Misha Kelly. Watch for details to follow and start looking for your most com-fortable dancing shoes!

SUMMER MEMBERS READING THIS: September 30th is quickly approaching, and we would sure like to welcome you into our yacht club family! I trust you have enjoyed our facilities, including our chilled swimming pool. Please call or email--or better yet, stop in and see us—and either Michelle, Virginia or I will be glad to answer any questions you may have and get you onboard!

Keep those comments coming! It is important that

we know how your experience is here—from the taste of the meals to the quality of service. We want to make your club the first place you choose to dine and the place you want to bring friends and guests to impress them!

At your service I remain,Tom Brusini

Employee Spotlight

Amanda McChesney is a native Floridian who has been part of our CYC staff for almost 4 years! She is our evening Manager on Duty when Tom takes a night off, she shares the Dining Room Manager role and does the scheduling of the dining room staff. She has three children and a loving husband who keep her busy! Before working at the CYC, she was a stay at home mom for three years after having her youngest child. Spending time with her fam-ily when she’s not at CYC is very important to her. Amanda has a love for CYC and is so grateful to be a part of the yacht club family.

The Annual Employee Turnabout Party was another

HUGE success! Members brought lots of delicious food to eat, and manned the gas grill, cooking ribeye steaks. Danielle was our guest bartender. Members waited tables and worked the pool area like it was a cruise ship Lido deck! Thanks to every member that attended and helped. Our maintenance supervisor, Dan Geis, did double duty as our crazy poolside Disc Jockey! Special thanks to CYC member Amie Crosby

Clearwater Yacht Club has gone STRAWLESS...upstairs and downstairs at the TIKI BAR. The CYC has joined the SUMMER STRAWLESS CAMPAIGN started by the City of Clearwater.

Bob and Becky Griffin are helping to educate businesses and the public by listing participating restaurants in their Neighborhood Newslett3ers in all four cities and in their Best Beach Restaurants magazine, used by all area hotels.

Look for these reminders (created by the Griffins) on the CYC bars—upstairs and down—as well as within over 250 area restaurants and bars. Help save the environment.
