Just a reminder. . . . When dropping your students off, please pull as far forward as you can and drop off as quickly as possible. This will help everyone get to school on time and avoid backups. Thank you for your cooperation! Hello Royal Families, Welcome to the 2018-19 school year! Our school team has been hard at work with the goal of making this year a success for our students and families. We are excited to embark on this years journey with you and your student. As your principal, I aspire to continue all of the great work that has been occurring at Lynnwood High school for years, while also challenging us in to grow and improve in all we do to support our students. A key value for our school is family engagement. We know that parents want the best for their children and it is our goal to reach out and partner with you in this belief. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or ideas you have about our school improvement and stay tuned for announcements about the many upcoming opportunities we will have this year to partner together. We are a team! Speaking as a parent of school-aged children, I have some understanding of the questions that might be on your mind. Two questions I keep wondering areHow do I know if my child is having success at school? And How can I support them so they are successful? For the first question, I encourage you to learn about two online tools that students can show their parents on their Chromebook: Skyward and Canvas. All teachers will be posting grades on Skyward as well as displaying assignments on Canvas. If you are unsure on how to use these platforms to monitor your studentsprogress, please feel free to schedule an appointment with counseling or look on our website for tips on how to monitor progress through these websites. Tips can be found in the Parentssection of our LHS website. Here is the link - Parent Tech Tips For the second question, I believe one of the most important gifts you can give your child is to instill in them the value of education. One simple way to give this gift is through regular conversations about school. I know conversations with teenagers can be tricky; the more you can show them that you care about their education the better. While teenagers may often appear disinterested in what the adults in their life have to say, they are often listening more than they let on. So keep on encouraging, challenging, and loving them; even when it feels like they arent with us. I certainly dont have all the answers but I know that we have the same goal – to prepare your child for a happy and successful life beyond high school. As we look toward making our goal a reality, please feel free to reach out to me as we head into this partnership. Thank you for doing the worlds most important work – being a parent. Page 5: September 2018 Newsletter...Marketing student Vanny N., and her company Medi-Morphosis prepare for their shareholder presentation at Seattle University. Hello LHS I am Mrs. Nunez,

Make this your best!

Start with the end in mind:

What kind of life do you want?

What are you doing now to get it?

FRESHMAN YEAR: Identify your interests. SOPHOMORE YEAR: Identify careers that meet your interests. JUNIOR YEAR: Identify institutions that can give you training, certification, or degrees in your interest. SENIOR YEAR: This year is submitting your paperwork! Do your financial aid application & your college admission applications in September-November. Then you’re done! Enjoy your Thanksgiving and Winter and Spring breaks! While you wait to hear back from colleges about whether or not they can admit you and how much money they can offer you, apply for scholarships! Scholarships are free money from people that want to help you get training and education so you can live a good life!

Looking ahead to what kind of life you want will make high school particularly meaningful!

* Your College and Career Center!

* Your Counselor!

* The Counseling & Career Website!

* Naviance!

The Counseling & Career Website Information throughout the school year will be distributed via the

Counseling & Career website and/or email!

Frequently check our Counseling, College, & Career website!

It is full of helpful information!

* Events Calendar

* And much more!

Page 6: September 2018 Newsletter...Marketing student Vanny N., and her company Medi-Morphosis prepare for their shareholder presentation at Seattle University. Hello LHS I am Mrs. Nunez,

Naviance Each grade level has four Naviance assignments to complete.

These assignments help you explore career and college options to assist you in your after-high-school plan!

You can earn .125 elective credits per year to total .5 credits at the end of four years for the completion of

these Naviance assignments at each grade level. In order to receive credit for a given school year, you must

have completed all of the required tasks during the year they were assigned. You cannot go back and com-

plete earlier grade level tasks in order to obtain the credit.

Assignments can be found under the "My Planner" tab.

Assignments may be completed online at home or at LHS.

Thinking Ahead! Good for all students and families to remember: The GPA you have at the end of your junior year is the GPA used on your four-year-college admission

applications.

If you are considering going to a four-year-university, learn about the SAT and ACT now. There is infor-

mation on the College Help page of the Counseling & Career website! It takes almost two months to

register for the test, take the test, and receive your results. Make sure you accomplish this before your

favorite college’s admission deadlines!

If you are wondering if something you are doing now will “count” for the college you want to attend,

look up the college you are interested in to see their admission requirements and application deadlines!

Admission offices are also happy to answer questions you have! J

Upcoming Events! Wednesday, September 19: Senior Meeting during Advisory! We will be meeting at 9:10am in the LHS the-

ater. Available parents are welcome to come as well! I will be sharing information and answering questions

about this busy time of year for senior students.

Monday, October 1: Financial Aid Opens! Fill out your FAFSA or WASFA as soon as possible to qualify for

state and federal aid to help pay for after-high-school education! See the “College Help” page of the Coun-

seling and Career website for more information on these applications.

Tuesday, October 9: Plan For Your Future and Financial Aid Night! Multiple university, community colleges,

technical colleges, career colleges, military branches, and apprenticeship options will be here at LHS to an-

swer your questions about their programs and opportunities! Don’t miss it! For all students and families.

During this time, financial aid assistance will be available in the LHS library for seniors and families! Bring

your 2017 tax returns with you, and you can leave with your application for financial aid complete!
