THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE OLLI OFFICE, 25 HALL STREET, CONCORD

Jane Fletcher, Program Director, Class of 2011

As always, OLLI staff and volunteers are available to assist you Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Please don’t ever hesitate to call us – 603-513-1377. OLLI Annual Meeting - Why Have One?

Jane Fletcher

The idea of hosting an OLLI Annual Meeting came from a member who, in 2014, suggested that an annual meeting would be the best way to promote OLLI as a statewide “organization” and dispel the perception of it being classes delivered by Granite State College (GSC).

In fact OLLI is an independent organization within and hosted by GSC. Although it is a part of the University System of New Hampshire, it has its own budget, its own staff, its own volunteer governance structure, its own set of policies and procedures, etc. Organizations are accountable to their members in terms of annual activity and finances and OLLI takes that responsibility seriously. We’d like you to be confident in and proud of your organization!

In October of 2014 your volunteer OLLI Steering Committee voted to institutionalize this annual event. Traditionally the format has included a social hour, meal, short report and entertainment. This year OLLI volunteers in Manchester have planned an event that, among the traditional offerings, highlights the Queen city. They invite you to join members from all over the state to take advantage of some of the unique and special opportunities that Manchester has to offer. I will be there to deliver the report and I hope you will be there to listen!

Please join us on September 26 by registering online before September 13. For more details please check page 8.

Look forward to seeing you there!

Registration Remorse Laurie Galletta & Jane Fletcher

OLLI office staff and volunteers would like to express our gratitude to those who attempted unsuccessfully, to register for class in the first few hours of the first day of fall registration. Your patience and understand-

ing were appreciated during that initial period of unanticipated technical difficulty. Special thanks to Sandy O’Neill, Beth Wagner and Judy Edwards, volunteers from the Seacoast who were working in the OLLI office that morning answering phones and assisting frustrated members. Your kind words and sense of humor went a long way for all of us while we waited for our registration system vendor to remedy the situation.

Please know that the OLLI office together with Granite State College IT staff are still working with the vendor to understand what happened and gain confidence that the same issue does not reoccur.

As an additional challenge on the following day, staff were made aware that some of you received messages that the OLLI registration site or links to it were “unsecure.” We learned that this message was delivered specifically to those who had Norton Anti-Virus software.

It is our understanding that this issue may have been related to the marketing of a new anti-virus product and has since been resolved. We are confident that our site remains secure. Please let the OLLI office know immediately should you experience such messages.

and finally . . .

Believe it or not, not one member responded to this request. I’m giving it one more try in case y’all were just enjoying the last of the lazy, hazy days of summer and didn’t want to think about putting fingers to keyboards.

I do hope to continue this column, so I am looking for any member who would like to write future Presenter Profiles either on a regular basis every month or on an occasional basis. If several members express interest, we can arrange a rotating schedule. Please contact me at [email protected] if you would be interested in contributing to this column. We look forward to resuming Presenter Profiles.

New Course Evaluation System Submitted by Jacki Fogarty, Class of 2012

Our prolific presenters, those who have presented numerous OLLI courses, often in multiple

sites, have earned a special place in heaven. Remember that these are volunteers who use

their own time and resources to research, plan, develop and present their course content to a

grateful and enthusiastic OLLI audience. Each month we introduce one of them to you so you

can learn about the person behind the course topic.

“Be Best.” It’s more than the First Lady’s campaign. It’s also OLLI’s plan for the future.

Be Good (we are), Be Better (we’re always trying), Be Best (it’s where we aim to be).

How do we become our very best? A huge tool

is evaluation. When you give feedback you have taken the first step toward making OLLI better. When committees review feedback

they take the next step to making OLLI better. When presenters review feedback they take a

huge step toward being better for themselves and for OLLI.

And all those “betters” propel OLLI to be the

best we can be. So, the Curriculum Council set a high priority to revamp the course evaluation system:

• to ask more meaningful questions and be user-friendly,

• to be able to compile results more quickly and effectively, and

• to limit evaluations to newly-offered courses

(i.e., if a course has already been offered and is back for an encore, then members and

Curriculum Committees have already concluded the course is high quality)

83% of our Summer/Fall courses are new, so

there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll experience the new evaluation system after you take a course this term.

What to expect The evaluations are online: • First you will receive an email from the OLLI

Office advising you that the evaluation will

be sent to you from an email address you may not recognize.

• Next you will receive an email from

[email protected]. That will contain a link to the evaluation form. The email is

safe to open and the link is safe to click. • You will be asked to complete the form within

10 days (it requires less than 10 minutes to

complete.) • Within two weeks after that deadline, the

results are compiled and delivered to the Curriculum Committee and presenter.

For a sneak peek at the questions you will be

asked, click here.

The production crew The Curriculum Council and a volunteer

committee worked with Laurie Galletta and Jim Miller, Director of GSC’s Institutional Research

department to create and test the evaluation.

The evaluation tool and the database of responses are housed on a server owned and

administered by Qualtrics, an industry leader in survey work.

Distribution of evaluations will be handled by

OLLI volunteers as will the reports that will be pulled from the system and distributed to Curriculum Committees and presenters.

The most important producer in the crew – YOU. Please complete evaluations on every course for which you are asked. You can help

OLLI Be Best.

On August 25, Native American Day, our Conway OLLI group toured a Shaker Village in New Gloucester, Maine. Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village is the world's only Shaker community with living members. In fact, there are only 2 Shakers alive in the world. Brother Arnold is 61 years old, and Sister June is 80 years old. I had the privilege of talking with Brother Arnold while I was making a purchase from the Shaker Store. The Shakers originated in England and began arriving in America in 1774. The Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village was established in 1783. Our tour guide, Diantha, showed us around the farming/religious community, consisting of 17 historic buildings on 1,800 acres of land. While taking the tour, we saw 8 Scottish Highlander cattle. Our tour wrapped up with a wonderful picnic lunch provided by the volunteers at the event.

Chapter Chat is open to OLLI members throughout the state. The group meets the second Monday of each month, 12:30 p.m., at Granite State College in Concord.

October 8 - Educated by Tara Westover This memoir recounts the amazing story of a young woman who never entered a classroom (no home schooling, either) until age 17 when she starts college. She went on to earn a PhD from Cambridge University. Westover grew up in a survivalist family in Idaho, preparing for the end of the world. Her story shows the power and courage of a young woman determined to educate herself.

November 12 - Clay Girl by Heather Tucker Ari, short for Hariet, grows up with an abusive father and an alcoholic mother and five other sisters. The novel is written through the eyes of a tough and gifted 8-year-old. The story is disturbing but hopeful.

December 10 - Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman Sad, funny, endearing are all used to describe this novel and its quirky heroine. Set in Glasgow, Eleanor is lacking in social skills and friends but things change. The story is an emotional roller coaster with lots of humor.

43 OLLI members and 8 nonmembers enrolled in one or more of the Summer Lectures offered by Osher at Dartmouth and viewed at the Concord campus. At 164 total enrollments, averaging 27 audience members per lecture, the series was well-regarded by attendees. At the final lecture, Mike Baker led a discussion in which attendees offered their opinions of the program.

Additionally, comments included that they enjoyed the format and especially the chance to submit questions, and that they hoped we could do it again next year. While every person said they would recommend the series to a friend, there were a few suggestions including having two speakers per topic to give the “yin and yang” of the story, and to make slides available ahead of the program so that offsite streaming viewers could have copies.

Half of the members were from Concord with Manchester and Seacoast making up the rest of the total. Manchester and Seacoast reps said they didn’t mind coming to Concord but would enjoy the opportunity to view the lectures from their local campuses. One popular feature of the OLLI at GSC program was using the half-hour break between the prepared lecture and the Q&A period for a discussion period facilitated by Mike Baker.

As a first-time experiment, the live-streamed lecture series was a great success and the attendees hope to be invited again next summer.

Members of the Central and Curriculum Committees on the Seacoast met jointly on July 26 to set the tone for the coming months to achieve a better member experience and a stronger OLLI presence on the Seacoast. Discussion topics included recruiting and retaining members, recruiting and retaining volunteers, member events and benefits, curriculum planning and succession planning.

The day also provided an opportunity for various committee members to get to know one another better. The location for the meeting was a relaxed setting where members shared a potluck lunch and informal conversation between the morning and afternoon sessions. The day helped solidify a common purpose of maintaining a strong presence of OLLI on the Seacoast.

Fall term is in full swing and there are fabulous courses being offered, both in classrooms and Out-and-Abouts. Also, some very creative fun events are in the works in all sites. We love to share OLLI experiences with all members through OLLI Outlook, on story boards at events and, occasionally, through an article in a local newspaper. We ask and encourage as many participants as possible to take photos and submit them for use. Of course, we love to see posed group shots and, even more, spontaneous candid shots.

If you do not want your picture published, please be sure to stay out of posed photographs and, if you are aware that pictures are being taken, do your best to stay out of the frame. If you think your picture might have been snapped, please approach the photographer, request that he/she take a picture of you with a thumbs-down gesture so that we can identify you in photos that we might consider publishing. But, it’s all good fun and we hope that you allow us to include you having a good time in our records.

Think about the classes you have taken. Have they been about current affairs, history, science? Do you enjoy literature? Please consider

Concord members who don’t mind (dare we say “enjoy”?) making telephone calls would be the most popular humans in the state capital if they would step up and say “I’ll do it!”

One project is short term – just a few days of making calls (or sending emails) to potential class assistants.

The other mission is a bit longer – about five weeks of making calls (or sending emails) to potential presenters who have already been identified.

We’ve all been thrilled with the number and variety of classes our Concord Curriculum Committee has created for us.

More classes = more telephone calls.

How’s your dialing finger? Make your first call now – to Diana Ryan at 603-228-5280 for the short term class assistant project or to Donna Frost at 603-648-2386 for the presenters project.

The discussions about the formation of a book club have revolved around the importance of attracting both men and women to this group.

Last month in this column I presented an overview of the Steering Committee, primarily its function within the organization. This month I’d like to give you a little more detail about the members of this committee. This past week was the first Steering Committee meeting of the new fiscal year of OLLI at Granite State College, starting the busy and very exciting time of year for all of us . . . new Summer/Fall semester, a myriad of interesting new courses to choose from, special interest groups to join and social events galore. Biggest problem for OLLI members? What to choose. However, the most exciting thing for me personally is the make-up of the 2018-19 Steering Committee. We are very fortunate to have excellent leaders continuing their terms on the Committee; these individuals are bright, ambitious, hard-working and conscientious. Let me point out that each Steering representative also has additional responsibility at their individual OLLI site along with their service on this statewide committee. The Committee has added five new members, each chosen by the Central Committee of their sites: Iris Altilio, Concord; Bee Muzerall and Cynthia Graham, Conway; Dee Angwin, Manchester, and Michelle Langa, Seacoast. With the addition of these five strong leaders who bring new focus,

focus, new ways to view problems (old and new) and new ideas . . . plus their incredible, contagious enthusiasm for OLLI . . . this year’s Steering Committee will guide our organization in a positive direction and help to build upon its solid foundation. Most of the Steering Committee members plan to attend the Annual Meeting/Celebration at the end of this month, Wednesday, September 26. This would be the perfect opportunity to ask questions or share your opinions with them; they, in turn, would be delighted to share their knowledge and/or listen to your comments. We look forward to meeting you in Manchester.
