https://www.facebook.com/TED/videos/10160545401360652/ This shows the importance of
exercise to the brain.
Did you watch Catalyst last Tuesday about ‘Memory’. The last bit of footage was of Master
swimmers in Sydney?

Reports from Near and Far, and ONYAS
Derek Bishop reports that the renovation at Armadale pool is taking shape. Here are a few photos
Derek took:
The new entrance.
Many more rooms
Apparently the new borehole that was
sunk hit good, hot artesian water. No promises, but we could be back home swimming early April, if
not before. However, we keep on at Cannington Leisureplex.
We have had a series of swimmers report in with ill health. We wish all a strong recovery.
Yvonne Lovegrove is fighting a very rare condition called Myasthenia Gravis. This is a
condition where a person’s auto-immune antibodies stop the signals to the brain that switch
on messages to talk, swallow, cough, blink and much more. This condition also results in
muscle weakness. Yvonne regularly visits Royal Perth Hospital for intravenous infusions of
good antibodies in order to replace the ones that are not working properly. Our Yvonne is a
determined person and says we will soon see her in the walking lane. ONYA YVONNE!
Here is a fact sheet on Myasthenia Gravis:

Gravis-Fact-Sheet
Our Coach Co-coordinator/Head Coach extraordinaire, Jeff Sanders, is a one of those
determined people who lives life to the full and is a risk taker. In a practice go-kart race
warm up he decided to take on a wall and the wall did not relent. Fractured vertebrae,
shoulder and many ribs landed him in the same hospital that Yvonne was in at the time. Jeff
arrived in style – by helicopter!
Jeff’s recovery is remarkable. At last Saturday’s after – swimming – training – coffee -
meeting Jeff arrived with his neck in a brace and his torso in another. There was virtual
embracing and loud applause. Jeff is determined to be back in the water to swim in Lake
Leschenaultia. ONYA JEFF!
Burt Vosbergen is doing it tough. The treatment for his cancer had to be stopped for a while
for it was making him worse. He will soon be back on a different course of treatment.
Meanwhile his brother Hans has been taking Burt to the Thornlie pool where Burt can do
some walking exercises. Burt is so determined! ONYA BURT!
Our President, Rowena Burch, has a blood disorder which results in anemia and a very pale
complexion. Despite this Rowena turns up to training and club championships much to the
consternation of many. Graham Hicks was seen pinching Rowena’s cheeks to restore the red
blush she ought to have. Rowena recently attended her Masters Degree graduation in
Adelaide. ONYA ROWENA!
Rowie. Now a Master of Biostatistics.
The Craggies in Alaska
Our Jen. Guess where?
Gillo and Cap’n Col enjoying a well earned rest in Bali.
Fetty recently in Zimbabwe
Ross, our ex President, has left for further shores: presently staying at Preston Beach before he and
Ann move into their Mandurah home. We wish them all the best.
Greg-the-dedicated continues to drive up from Safety Bay to Saturday training, and once a month
committee meetings. This man is a ball of energy. However, he reports that even he blanches at the
training regime of his second swimming club; Rockingham Masters … 200m kick only, WITHOUT
FINS!
See how lucky us Armadale Masters swimmers are!? Our coaches are soft and cuddly. We are very,
very fortunate in having so many coaches. Jackie and Tim will soon be accredited coaches. We also
have Peter Escott training us in preparation for him to become a triathlete coach. ONYA COACHES!
And, …. An ONYA to Liz for taking on our club’s secretarial role.
Chas/Charles and Heather Croft participated in the Bunbury Postal Swim. Our Chas, whom we now
share with Cockburn Masters, came first in the Bunbury Postal Swim… 3 different strokes at 400m.
ONYA Chas!
BIRTHDAY WISHES
