Brought to you by the Providence Senior High School’s Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) September 2017 Volume 30, Issue 1 Dear PHS Parents: As we approach the mid-quarter mark, I wanted to let you know how well things are going at Providence. Recently, we have been recognized for the following achievements: The ONLY high school in CMS to receive a grade of A+ and the highest performing high school in CMS in 2016-17 (recognized by the NC Dept. of Public Instruction). Providence students EXCEEDED expected growth which means that students grew more than they were predicted to grow in a year’s time. Providence has the HIGHEST ACT scores in CMS. Providence has the HIGHEST Graduation Cohort Rate of any school in CMS. Our senior class has the largest number of National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists (14) in Mecklenburg including the private schools. It is almost unbelievable that our students, with much support from their teachers, have recently been recognized in this many categories. The accolades are not just about high performance, they are about GROWTH. Growth is defined by a year’s worth of progress in a year’s time. The “A+” score from NC Dept. of Public Instruction was earned because our students have exceeded growth goals (and not just the top performing students but the average and struggling students as well) and because we have a smaller achievement gap between subgroups of students than the state average. Of all the recent accolades earned by the students and teachers at Providence, I am most proud of the growth and a higher than expected increase in each child’s performance from one year to the next. This emphasizes the impact of the teaching and learning that occurs at our school and is a true measure of how hard our faculty and students work to get better and better each year. To top off this good news, last week we received an email from a Providence alum who wrote, “Providence High School… did its job – the teachers, the extracurricular activities, the homework – they all intertwined and worked to lift me and every other student there to a place that would give us success when it was our time to walk across the stage. They gave us an academic edge over the rest of the high school students…” This is the true measure of our success as a school: How prepared are our graduates for college and career? It is music to our ears when we hear from our former students that they are thriving! I hope you find this issue of the Paw Prints full of the good news at Providence. Best wishes to you and your child on a productive and successful school year. Sincerely, Dr. Harrill

September 2017 Volume 30, Issue 1

Dear PHS Parents:

As we approach the mid-quarter mark, I wanted to let you know how well things are going at Providence. Recently, we have been recognized for the following achievements:

• The ONLY high school in CMS to receive a grade of A+ and the highest performing high school in CMS in 2016-17 (recognized by the NC Dept. of Public Instruction).

• Providence students EXCEEDED expected growth which means that students grew more than they were predicted to grow in a year’s time.

• Providence has the HIGHEST ACT scores in CMS. • Providence has the HIGHEST Graduation Cohort Rate of any school in CMS. • Our senior class has the largest number of National Merit Scholarship

Semifinalists (14) in Mecklenburg including the private schools.

To top off this good news, last week we received an email from a Providence alum who wrote,

“Providence High School… did its job – the teachers, the extracurricular activities, the homework – they all intertwined and worked to lift me and every other student there to a place that would give us success when it was our time to walk across the stage. They gave us an academic edge over the rest of the high school students…”

This is the true measure of our success as a school: How prepared are our graduates for college and career? It is music to our ears when we hear from our former students that they are thriving!

I hope you find this issue of the Paw Prints full of the good news at Providence.

Best wishes to you and your child on a productive and successful school year.

Sincerely, Dr. Harrill

A special thanks to all the PHS parents who have volunteered to be a part of Providence’s PTSO board! Many of our board members volunteered this summer to help prepare for the 2017-18 school year, by:

~ Conducting the annual audit of the PTSO financials & books; ~ Creating a brand-new PTSO website; ~ Preparing and editing our Mews and Paw Prints newsletters; ~ Planting, mulching and cleaning up Providence’s campus; ~ Organizing student picture days; ~ Updating our display case with a beautiful exhibit of staff photos; ~ Promoting our Harris Teeter & Publix partnerships; and ~ Planning and serving the staff welcome back luncheon.

The dedication and hard work of these volunteers are an integral part of making the start of 2017-18 a success.

Thank you to the following parents who are new to the PTSO board: Julie Knafelz, Stacey Ellis, Margaret Musa, Dawn Weber, Staci Rice, Andrea Howell, Cheryl McCauley, Sam Wallach, Lauren Springs, Missy Reinhard, Melissa Lefko, Staci Mond, and Elizabeth Campbell.

Welcome back to our “veteran” PTSO board members: Beth Cotton, Mary Ann Kirchner, Chris Donaldson, Betsy Kaperonis, Lucia Lane, Lisa Shenton, Samira Loganathan, Michelle Jegier, Sarah Fligel, Kelly Leslie, Janet Darden, Claudia Pamperin, Karissa McLaughlin, Jane Fisher, Amy Choffin, Cathy Martin, Katherine Bondi, Renee Broud, Heather Fuller, Jen Taylor, Jacquie Cugliari, Carole Powlen, Liz Alba, Monica Patterson, Beth Bowen, Tina Ward, Wendy Welch, B.C. DeIuliis, Karen DeVries, Cynthia Siemasko, Michele Thomas, Mary Margaret Johnstone, Katharine Willis, Michelle Proctor, Nancy Knox, and Leslie Davidson.

Finally, a special thank you to you, our Providence parents, for all you do to make Providence the highly successful school that it is. On Monday, August 21, our PHS staff enjoyed a back to school luncheon sponsored by the PTSO and Chick-Fil-A Arboretum. Each staff member received a treat bag full of sweet and salty snacks and water to enjoy while watching the Solar Eclipse! The PTSO Staff Support Committee provides monthly events for our PHS staff to show them how much we appreciate what they do for our students. If you would like to help throughout the year by donating items such as baked goods, beverages, paper products, and other items needed, please email Liz Alba at [email protected].

WE DID IT! ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL BEAUTIFICATION DAY

Thanks to all the students and parents who helped out on August 19 at the annual PTSO back to school campus clean-up day!!!

Despite the heat, we had 35 volunteers come together to get the campus looking great for all of the school opening activities.  We picked up trash, weeded, trimmed bushes, planted flowers by the sign and mulched the front, bus lot entrance, and auditorium entrance.

We want to give a special thanks to NJROTC and NHS.  These two groups really came out to support their school.  We want to also give a shout out to all the adults that helped us through our first beautification day. Without all of you we wouldn’t be able to do this.  Look for upcoming announcements on our next clean-up day in the late fall.  It is a great way to earn service hours and to give back to your community.
