Exhibited:

Literature: Roald Nasgaard, Abstract Painting in Canada, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, 2007, page 83

Published in 1948, the Refus global manifesto is a historical document that signaled an important cultural shift in Quebec. In art historian Roald Nasgaard's words, it was “a passionate attack on all the repressive social, political, historical and religious forces that had shaped the Quebecois people.” Not only was it the driving force behind the Automatist movement, it is now regarded as a milestone in the modernization of Quebec, exposing the province to the cosmopolitan ideas of the post-war era. The manifesto was written by Paul-Émile Borduas and co-signed by 15 other artists, including Marcel Barbeau, Claude Gauvreau, Marcelle Ferron, Fernand Leduc and Jean Paul Riopelle, who painted the cover art. Besides the manifesto, the publication includes two essays on language and Surrealism by Borduas, three short plays by Gauvreau, an essay on dance by Françoise Sullivan, Bruno Cormier’s text on pictorial art, a poem by Leduc and photographs by Maurice Perron. This rare book - only 400 copies were printed - quickly sold out and has been acquired by many institutions, such as Library and Archives Canada and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Literature: J.W.G. Macdonald, "Reflections on a Trip to the Canadian International Seminar at Breda, Holland", Highlights (paper of the Alberta Society of Artists) 4:2, 1950, page 6

In 1949, Jock Macdonald spent the summer as a professor at the International Student Seminars at Breda, in the Netherlands. There Macdonald also visited the Indonesian Museum, where he wrote that he was “transported into a world of fantasy, exotic colour, subtle charm of design and playfulness in subject matter.” On his return to Toronto, Macdonald created works utilizing watercolour and wax resist to echo Indonesian batik techniques. This work is being sold by the McMaster Museum of Art to fund future acquisitions, with the agreement and consent of the donor.

Literature:

Harold Town, who was influenced by American Abstract Expressionist artists, holds an important role in the emergence of modern art in Canada. Along with the artist group Painters Eleven – active from 1953 to 1960 and including artists such as Jack Bush - Town exposed the Canadian public to modernist movements in a conservative art society. The aim of Painters Eleven was not to refute the work of traditionalists, but rather to achieve recognition for abstract artists and their art by doing so collectively, and realizing their potential strength in numbers. Town was successful both critically and financially in the 1950s and 1960s, holding exhibits across Canada and in the USA, and represented Canada at the Venice Biennale in 1956 and 1964. Garden Shrine, created in 1960 – a booming year of creativity for Town – shows his use of oil and Lucite to create many layers on the canvas, allowing viewers to see and feel his painterly actions as he works across the canvas. There is a vivid sense of abstract form, created not just by shape, but by the different brush-strokes and techniques Town used to apply the paint, from thick strokes to thin lines and scratches. Through his unique painterly technique and vivid colours, it is clear that Town was exploring all the possibilities that paint can offer in Garden Shrine.

Literature: Katherine Gibson, Ted Harrison: Painting Paradise, 2009, page 139

In 1967 Ted Harrison emigrated from England to northern Alberta, and in 1968 he moved to the small Yukon town of Carcross to teach art. Harrison felt the romance of the North keenly; he loved the vast and pristine landscape and the unique character of its people, and he became a renowned chronicler of everyday life there. He developed a vision of the North that was optimistic, bursting with light and colour, and populated with the self-sufficient individuals who thrived in the freedom they found there. He left behind the “art rules” of his past and developed his own bold, graphic and playful approach to line and space. The Eye of the Day is a classic Harrison work—a vibrant town scene bustling with the activities of families, dogs and the ever-present mischievous ravens. The houses reflect the undulating rhythm of the landscape—as Harrison described, “It’s as if we live in landlocked ships that sail upon rolling waves of earth.” From above, all is illuminated by the “eye” of the sun, which beams down benevolently upon this northern scene.

The subject of this early painting by Ted Harrison is Frankie Smith of Carcross, who at the time of this portrait was 11 years old and a student of the artist’s at Carcross Elementary School. Frankie’s paternal grandmother was the sister of Skookum Jim. The family claims that it was Skookum Jim who originally discovered the gold at Bonanza Creek – not George Carmack as the history books have said. Accompanying this work is a letter from Harrison about Frankie, along with two photographs of the subject taken by the artist.

Literature: Lois Adison, http://loisandison.com/collection/16, accessed August 16, 2017

The artist describes this work as "...a text based work where words that come before and after the word "star" are randomly combined. There are 14 words on a concealed drum on the left side of 'star' and 14 words on the concealed drum on the right side of 'star.' We are only able to view one word on the left and one word on the right at a time through the two viewing window slots on either side. The combination of the generated words are at times funny, profound and ridiculous. The form/structure with the moving drums visible through slots along with the randomly generated words brings to mind a gambling machine that doles out re-mixes of popular culture and existentialism."This work is from an edition of 7 and 2 AP. The full medium is noted as: acrylic, LED lights, aluminum, Delrin, motors, timing belts and custom electronics.Accompanying this work is a storage box with the gallery label.

Literature: Canada: Ron Martin, Henry Saxe, National Gallery of Canada, 1977, page 12 Ron Martin, 1971-1981, Art Gallery of Ontario, 1989, reproduced page 71

Throughout his career, Ron Martin was concerned with how the material of paint could become the subject of an artwork. After the fall of 1973, Martin abandoned the traditional easel and paint brush, and began to work horizontally. Laying his canvas flat, he orchestrated the paint with his hands directly - leaving the artist’s gesture as marks on the canvas. In regard to works of this period, Martin stated: “the material takes on its own character apart from anything I might have done.” Painted in 1974, Iron Oxide-Mars Black #3 is characteristic of Martin’s earliest all-black works, where the dark paint contrasts with the small unpainted areas of the canvas. Martin often experimented with self-imposed restrictions, and in this period, he worked with varying quantities of paint ranging from one to 25 gallons. Nine of Martin’s black paintings were exhibited internationally at the Venice Biennale in 1978. This painting was also exhibited at the famous Michael Werner Gallery, one of the top contemporary art dealers in the world.

William Perehudoff was one of the prairie artists who rose to prominence in the early 1970s, along with his wife Dorothy Knowles and his contemporaries the Regina Five. A large part of their national recognition resulted from the Emma Lake Artists’ Workshops, which featured visits from well-known artists such as American Colour Field painter Barnett Newman and New York-based art critic Clement Greenberg. By the time Artemis #3 was painted in 1972, Perehudoff had participated in five of these workshops and had found his painterly voice. The early 1970s were a significant time in the artist's rising career, and many of his strongest works are from this period. In Artemis #3, we see Perehudoff playing with colour and form to create a visual experience. This experience begins with the vibrant fuchsia background, then the large circle and the thick bands of colour, all complimenting one another in harmony. The viewer's eye then draws to the right of the painting, where the bands of colour narrow and switch to the opposite side of the colour spectrum, exhibiting intense greens and subtle hints of blue that lead off the the canvas.

Literature: Scott Watson, Jack Shadbolt, 1990, page 77

In September of 1956, Jack Shadbolt went to France on a year’s leave of absence, funded by the Canada Council. After a sojourn in Paris, Shadbolt traveled south, staying at Menton in the French Riviera and at Collioure, a small fishing village near the Spanish border. Shadbolt’s time in France was liberating, both in terms of his psyche and the effect of the light and colour of the south of France on his work. As Scott Watson writes, “It was as if something that had been long pent up was suddenly freed, as his senses opened up to new tastes, textures and sensations, especially colours. The cumulative effect was a narcotic intimation of paradise.” He immersed himself in the sensory, experiencing the joy of living a slow, leisurely life of freedom under the Mediterranean sun – and let his hedonistic side bloom.

Nihonga is a traditional Japanese technique. The colors used are made from hand-ground powders composed of various natural ingredients such as minerals, shells, coral and semi-precious stones, incorporated into an animal glue. The resulting blend is applied onto the support using a traditional brush with water. This exceptional work demonstrates the mastery of Miyuki Tanobe's Nihonga technique and is an example of her finest and most iconic representations of Montreal’s vibrant street life.
