Trained as an artist, woodworker, furniture maker and industrial designer, Mark is also an academic. Mark is a professorin, and coordinator of, the Fine Woodworking Programs at Bucks County Community College in Newtown,Pennsylvania.

The Hawaii Forestry Industry Association (HFIA) is bringing in Mark Sfirri this fall for their Woodshow. The HonoluluWoodturners are partnering with HFIA and will have a demonstration and hands-on workshop. The demonstration will beopen to general public as well as club members. The hands-on workshop will be restricted to club members.

Mark is well-known in the woodturning world for his brain-bending multi-axis work, and for the humor he brings to bothpresentations and sculptural pieces like those in his Rejects From the Bat Factory series.

He lectures and demonstrates woodturning and woodworking design and techniques throughout the US, Canada, France,Ireland, England, New Zealand, and Australia.

Mark grew up in Middletown, Pennsylvania and studied fine arts at Penncrest. Mark, who earned his Bachelor of FineArts degree from Rhode Island School of Design in 1974, and his Master of Fine Arts from the same institution in 1978,was heavily influenced by his mentor Frid, who encouraged Mark to use his primary tool, the lathe in new, creative ways.

Mark uses the lathe to create conventional bowls and spindles which he then manipulates using multi-centered spindles, and a series of crosscuts; the resulting pieces combine concave and convex surfaces with curvilinear contours.

“As a furniture maker and sculptor much of my work centers around the wood lathe-turned object. Turned piecessometimes turned on several different axes have allowed me to explore form in a spontaneous, mathematical, creativeway.”

Well known for his bold composition and meticulous attention to detail, Mark has collaborated on individual pieces withnumerous other artists, including Michael Hosaluk and painter Robert Dodge.

Mark Mitsuda’s work is an exploration of line, pattern and texture. He strives to create by reinterpreting both traditional andnontraditional shapes. He seeks to use Venetian techniques to reflect a contemporary aesthetic. Mark seeks to create elegance froma functional shape. Often the relationship of proportion and ornamentation results in a contradiction or implied absurdity,questioning the relationship between decorative and function. His current body of work explores utilitarian vessels through the lensof Venetian technique and contemporary design.

BODY OF WORK

JUNE 29, 2017 APRIL 29, 2018 HONOLULU MUSEUM OF ART

Exhibition Overview

Since Paleolithic peoples carved female fertility symbolsfrom stone, we have been fascinated by our own image, and are driven to represent that form in art. Self-representation helped our ancestors create meaning in adangerous, unknown world, and artists today use thehuman form to communicate desires, ideologies, andindividual and cultural experiences.

These primarily American and European paintings, sculptures, photographs and works on paper, drawn fromthe museum’s modern and contemporary collection, focus on the human figure in classically inspired worksas well as personal and experimental pieces thatchallenge viewers’ preconceptions. See works by suchartists as Robert Arneson, Elmer Bischoff, RobertColescott, Robert Mapplethorpe, Vik Muniz, Mickalene

Artist Statement

I have incorporated image transfers into my ceramicwork since the 1970s. Research for my current projectstarted three years ago when I began painting abstractcompositions with underglaze colors, including text, onthin porcelain sheets, then kiln-firing them forpermanence. Titled, The NO Series, the text consistedof one word, which began with NO and expanded toinclude the words NEVER, NOT, NOPE, NOTHINGand NO-NO. These negatives are a visual response tonatural and man-made disasters, political and socialconflicts, and incivilities that plague our contemporaryworld.

Page 13: September 2017 - Hawaii Craftsmen · Trained as an artist, woodworker, furniture maker and industrial designer, Mark is also an academic. Mark is a professor in, and coordinator of,

Unpleasant Conversations consists of white porcelainplates and cups installed in the gallery. Decals madefrom four black ink NO Series drawings are attached tothe plates and cups though kiln-firing. While the cupsare installed in disarray on a black table in the center ofthe gallery, the plates are installed on a yellow bandencircling the area. The yellow band, which recalls ayellow caution tape, is bisected by a continuing redline with an arrow that delineates space in variousways. First, as a reference to the horizon line, andtherefore, distant space; second, as part of an encirclingband, which wraps around and encloses the spaceencouraging conversation; and third, as an arrow whichdirects the eye around the area. Normally red signalsstop, or the ceasing of movement, yet here it acts toencourage the viewers’ movement around the gallery.

The idea of conversation is further examined throughvariations of the text. The printed words act asdeclarations, but also as responses, echoes or evenyells, among the plates and the cups or among people. The simple black panels with white text on the circularplates and cups, coupled with the communal referenceto the sharing of food and drink, pull people in. At thesame time, the words on these everyday objects pushpeople away, reflecting the overwhelming negativity, divisiveness and hostility often found in society today.
