Vietnamese refugees displaced from their home country. What were you doing? How did Vietnam impact you and your world? We want to hear from you! To tell your story through writing, voice, imagery, please go to www.rmpbs.org/vietnam and scroll down the page to the purple banner “Voices of Vietnam from Colorado” and click on “enter” next to “view gallery.” We need our volunteers to participate in this dialogue! Thank you in advance for your contribution. Want to Impact Kids? Join the Volunteer Ranks for our Super School News program Join the volunteers for Super School News (www.rmpbs.org/ssn ) and make a difference in a child’s life. This education-based program is the oldest, continuously running production of Rocky Mountain PBS. For over 30 years, volunteers have made it possible for 5th and 6th graders to produce 2-minute news broadcasts about their schools which appear on the air. This program introduces children to the world of broadcast news and, as a result, some of the Super School News alumni have gone on to careers in journalism and broadcast. Volunteers will be assigned a school and work with a teacher and student team (1-2 coaching sessions at the school) to design their broadcast. Volunteer training is provided. In addition, volunteers will assist with assembling information (1 morning in August and December), orientation day (1 morning in September and January) and will attend the taping session at the Denver station. We hope you will help sustain this legacy program. If you are interested in volunteering, please email [email protected] or Susan Barber [email protected]. Volunteers for StoryMakers Short Story Contest StoryMakers is a statewide short story contest for young writers in grades 6, 7 and 8. Prizes will be awarded to the top winners at each grade level. Volunteers Reflect on “An Evening with Ken Burns” SubmittedbySusanEwingBarber

“There is no single truth in war.” These are the words that appeared on the top of the title slide for Ken Burns’ epoch documentary on Vietnam. These words accurately describe the content of the documentary where Ken Burns and Lynn Novick have assembled the various “truths” of this devastating war. From soldiers of North Vietnam, South Vietnam and the U.S., to those who protested the war, to the U.S. policy makers, the audience journeyed through the evening together.

Page 6: September 2017 - Amazon Web Servicespbs.bento.storage.s3.amazonaws.com/hostedbento-prod... · StoryMakers is a statewide short story contest for young writers in grades 6, 7 and 8

It was not an easy journey. For many in the audience, it was a journey of remembrance, a journey of pain, and a journey of “talking out loud”….of telling stories that many had buried deep for over 40 years. The impetus for creating this documentary was to tell these hidden stories, come to terms with them and begin a reconciliation process bridging the bitter divisions of the time. At one point in the program, Mr. Burns asked all the veterans of the Vietnam War in the audience to stand. Pausing only a few seconds, he then asked those who had protested the war to stand. And, there it was, protestors and veterans standing together after so many years. Over 800 attendees filled the Newman Center for the Performing Arts (University of Denver) on the evening of August 23rd presented by Rocky Mountain PBS. Following an introduction by Ken Burns, the audience viewed an hour of clips that will appear in the 10-episode documentary.

After the clips, Laura Frank, President and General Manager of News and Content (RMPBS) moderated a conversation between Ken Burns and General Merrill McPeak. General McPeak was featured in the film. He is a former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force. During the Vietnam War, he flew 269 combat missions. The panel then took questions from the audiences in Grand Junction, Colorado Springs and Denver.

Left to Right: Laura Frank, General Merrill McPeak, Ken Burns Thanks go to the wonderful volunteers for the evening. As is so often the case when volunteers donate their time and services at special events, they were so much more than passive observers. Here are two perspectives of their volunteer experience from that evening:

My appreciation and thanks for being included as a supporting member of our Rocky Mountain Public Media event last night. Everything went so smoothly and all the guests were very complimentary about how they were received into the reception and showing and how meaningful the presentation was, both the preview of the series and the remarks by Ken Burns and the General. I look forward to viewing the 18 hours. It will be personally meaningful to relive memories and to learn about the different perspectives and previously unrecognized aspects of history given Ken’s statements. This is another example of RMPM’s leadership in education and fostering community

Nasiri Suzan, Sharon Schonhaut, Judy Lester-Smith dialogue. Sharon Schonhaut, Volunteer Thank you for sharing feedback and allowing me to be a part of this event. It was deeply touching. Having a chance to hear people’s individual sharings and to acknowledge their bravery and wisdom during this war was a rare opportunity. Ken Burns did a stunning job on this film and I’m looking forward to seeing the series on RMPBS.

I’ve posted on FB about the event and when it is on PBS. I would encourage others to do so. Once again, it was a pleasure to be a part of such an astounding event. Hugely successful on all levels.

10th Annual RMPBS Kids FunFest in Grand Junction Submitted by Charlie Blackmer

We in Western Colorado are celebrating the presentation of the best KRMJ Kids Fun Fest to date. Thirty-seven community businesses and nonprofit partners joined us Saturday, August 12th for a free day of fun. Kids got the chance to meet Clifford and Super Why, and participate in dozens of fun activities. Parents and caregivers were given the opportunity to learn about community resources they otherwise may have not known about: low-income housing resources, pediatric specialty care, a reduced cost healthcare clinic, local museums and educational resources. While our community is successful in many ways, nearly 50% of children in the school district qualify for the free or

reduced lunch program. Whether it was a prize, a small giveaway, or merely information, everyone walked away from this event with something.

During the 1960’s, programs about the Old West and its cowboys, ranchers, miners, farmers, guns and horses were the most popular genre of television. During the 1950s and 1960s, several hundred TV Westerns aired on commercial stations including such icons as Bat Masterson, The Big Valley, Bonanza and the #1 longest running western series, Gunsmoke,

that ran from 1955---1975. But, did you know that KRMA---TV (now Rocky Mountain PBS) also produced its very own local cowboy program? Yes, indeed! The locally produced Cowboys West was shot at KRMA studios and was distributed to National Educational Television in September 1961. Hosted by Max Morath, Cowboys West depicted

cowboy life between 1868---1890 when the Texans drove longhorns into Kansas.

The 15 programs that were produced were only 8.5 minutes each. Although the programs were intended as a children’s program, adults also loved to watch them. Jim Case, producer of the program, said Max Morath was chosen as the program host “for his sincerity and an uncondescending quality. He doesn’t talk down to kids.” Max Morath himself said during a 2001 Oral History interview for Station’s Archived Memories, “I was given scripts and memorized them. I worked with a wonderful local actor named Robert Benson. There were other actors and singers that came in and I tell you, we had fun.” Research for this month’s “Tidbits of History” article was made possible by the volunteer-driven project known as STATION’S ARCHIVED MEMORIES (SAM) that serves the past, present, and future of Rocky Mountain Public Media by assuring that its history and importance to the Colorado community will survive for generations to come. To learn more about the station’s history, how to research the archives, volunteer or donate items to the archives, please visit www.RMPBS.org/SAM, or contact Volunteer Coordinator, Susan Barber, at [email protected].
