It’s not everyday we get to welcome a new staff

person here at Good Shepherd. So I am

absolutely delighted to welcome Jaclyn

Kolodychuk, our new Youth Leader. Here’s a

little bit about her in her own words:

So Jaclyn, what is your faith story, in three

sentences or less?

ummm... I grew up going to Sunday school, and

then church; although sometimes I really only

went to church to see friends. I'm not the best at

memorizing bible verses but I'm always ready to

love. Trusting that God is taking care of me is so

important to my outlook on life and I know that

I'm happier for it.

What do you enjoy most about working with

youth?

I love being able to challenge people and hold

them accountable for creating their own good

time. I love encouraging people to try something

new. I also love challenging how we think

because it can lead to some great ideas.

What are your hopes and dreams for youth

ministry at Good Shepherd?

I would love for the youth ministry to be

something the youth feel ownership of. A part of

the congregation as a whole but something that

is unique for the youth.

Positive friendships, encouraging each other

and expanding comfort zones are great ways

to learn... also silly goofy fun!

Who has inspired you in your life?

My mom is fun, loving and hardworking and

I'm proud to be like her. My Dad is strong,

smart and practical and raised me that way.

Both my brothers are social, confident, caring

and rarely seem scared and pushed me to be

like that. Both my Fiance and my best friend

encourage me to be patient, logical and to see

all perspectives, which helps to be accepting

and loving to everyone.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love swimming, boating and anything else

involving water. Camping is always fun, even

in the rain or snow, especially if you have tea.

I actually find debating to be really fun, you

are challenged and get to be creative. I also

like trying new things, which is how I

discovered that swordfighting is awesome.

Really…swordfighting?

Yeh, really.

We pray in thanksgiving for the wonderful

trip our youth group enjoyed in PEI at the

CLAY gathering. And we also give thanks

for Jaclyn Kolodychuk, our new youth

worker, who started her service with us in

August and we pray for her leadership of

our youth.

We pray for the year ahead and for the

programs of our congregation that through

them, many may grow in faith, fellowship

and friendship.

All women are invited to join us for an evening or afternoon

of fellowship and Bible Study at our circle meetings in

September. Circles will continue to study and discuss a

chapter each month from the “Women of the Bible” study

series.

Golf Tournament We are hoping to once again hold our annual congregational golf

tournament up at Merritt golf Course on September 24th. If you are interested and available please sign up on the sign-up sheet after church on Sunday so we can gauge how many people might be interested. The plan would be to tee-off in Merritt around 10:30 or 11 a.m. allowing people to travel out there and return by evening. You also have the option of staying overnight at the Durand cabin at Allison Lake. There is a further option available of a practice round at the Princeton Golf and Country Club on September 23rd (with the same option to stay overnight at the Durand cabin on Friday evening.) BIRTHDAYS September once again gives us cause

to celebrate the birthdays of our

Karhukangas will celebrate their birthdays on September

27th and Peter Schuler on September 28th. Happy

Belated Happy Birthday to Elaine Bouthot, who

celebrated a milestone birthday, turning 70 on August

26th.

ANNIVERSARIES Congratulations to Merv and Bernice Kirk who will

celebrate their 63rd Wedding Anniversary on Sept. 12.

Derksen on the birth of their son,

Lauchlan, on July 26th, weighing in at 8

lbs. 4 ounces- a baby brother for Liam.

DEATHS Nick Werner passed away on August 14th. A memorial

service was held at Good Shepherd on August 26th.

Murder in the Cathedral is a verse drama

that portrays the assassination of Archbishop

Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral in

1170, first performed in 1935. Eliot drew

heavily on the writing of Edward Grim a

clerk who was an eyewitness to the event.

Looking ahead, we will next be reading and

discussing “At the Back of the North Wind”

by George MacDonald.

MISSIONAL GUIDING TEAM

Through the summer we have been encouraging our members to participate in the Missional Story Challenge. The invitation is to attend a community event, engage on some level, a neighbour or stranger you don’t know and bring back the story of your experience. Some of these experiences might not seem very significant at all. And yet, upon reflection, they may yield wonderful insight about what it means to be God’s people in the world today. They can open our eyes to how God’s spirit is at work out in front of us creating opportunities for connection and the sharing of Gospel life. One such reflection came to us recently from Elaine Sinton which we would like to share with you. Enjoy.

“On July 1, Canada Day, I went to my 16 year old granddaughter’s softball game, and it was the most

discombobulated game I have ever attended. Coaches were questioning umps on a regular basis, batters

were going to base on ball 3, umpires were making strange calls, base runners

were sent back and on and on it went. After the game one of the spectators

(whom we did not know) was shaking his head, and said to us: “I have never seen

anything like it.” We had to agree, but mentioned that it was great that no one got

angry or disgusted, we just watched our children and grandchildren doing their

best. Some making great plays, others fumbling the ball, but they were a team

and were working together for exercise, friendship and enjoyment, win or lose!

Sometimes our missional church life is like that. We fumble around trying to do what’s best, we make

mistakes, we have errors in judgement and make the wrong calls. Sometimes the pews are near empty,

sometimes full, but we are together as a team (congregation) – maybe not for exercise, but for

enjoyment, friendship and most of all worship. However, unlike a softball game, there is no “lose” – we

always win, for regardless of whether we receive new members, or lose old ones, have people shaking

their heads at us or agreeing with us, God is always present and at work in our lives and the lives of

others. God is our ump – God’s calls are never wrong!”

Surrey Urban Mission Society On Sunday, August 21st, Good Shepherd hosted a dinner at SUMS for about 200 homeless and/or hungry people Thank you to all those who provided chili for the meal. Many compliments were received about how much they enjoyed and appreciated their meal.

Thank you to Pat Savage for organizing the event and to all the volunteers who gave up their Sunday afternoon to serve, deliver and clean up after the dinner. Thanks to Jane Whitter who purchased and assembled (with help from Jerry & Dawn Nieman) over 200 goodie bags which were distributed to the attendees.

Adult Education Opportunities

Please take note of the opportunities for Bible Study, faith formation and Christian education starting up this fall:

Sunday Morning Bible Study (beginning September 18th) meets at 9 am every Sunday morning before the service and engages in lively conversation and discussion around a selected Bible text appointed for the day.

Mid-week Bible Study (beginning September 14th) meets at 10:30 every other Wednesday morning at the church and gathers for a bag lunch afterwards. Once a month we go out for lunch. We will be concluding our study of the Book of Acts and moving on to another book of the Bible shortly.

Adult Faith Conversation (beginning October 4th) meets every other Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm at the church. This is an opportunity to gather and discuss subjects, topics or themes chosen by the group. Several options are being considered but we are always open to suggestions. So bring your curiosity, your questions and your suggestions and join us for some stimulating conversation.

It should be emphasized that none of these studies are for “Bible Experts.” Even if you have no knowledge of the Bible or theology, you will find yourself welcome and stimulated by your participation in these groups. So why not give one of these opportunities a try?

Registration for Sunday School, which is

held during the Sunday morning services

throughout the school year will be taking

place as well. Anyone with

a child or grandchild

between the ages of four

and eleven is welcome to

sign them up for this year.

I’d rather attend church with messed up people seeking after God than

religious people who think they’re God’s enforcers

More about South Sudan Refugee Relief

We are asking for your help to provide support for those whose lives have been devastated due to the recent

fighting in South Sudan. In early July, hundreds of people were killed and tens of thousands were displaced.

Between July 7–25, an estimated 37,500 South Sudanese refugees crossed into Uganda where CLWR

partner’s Lutheran World Federation-Uganda (LWF-Uganda) has mobilized rapid crisis support at refugee

reception centres.

The rapid influx of refugees into Uganda is straining the capacity of the existing

settlements and service centers. The UNHCR and its partners, including LWF-

Uganda, are struggling to respond, but their resources are severely constrained. In

response to these urgent needs, CLWR is helping meet the basic hygiene, shelter and

education needs of new arrivals within Adjumani district, Uganda. CLWR will

continue to monitor the evolving situation within the region and search for further

opportunities to meet the needs of those displaced.

Donations will go where needed most. For example, funds could provide clothing, personal and household

hygiene supplies, and food vouchers for the most vulnerable people. It could support peace building

initiatives and vocational training for women. It could rehabilitate schools and provide school supplies to

children, or it could help provide psychosocial support to youth and young adults.

I hope everyone is as excited as I am for Youth to start this year! I

heard the youth that went to CLAY2016 in PEI had an great time… or at

least the leaders did. Thanks to everyone who helped support the youth

on their trip. I am Jaclyn, the new youth worker, and I’m really excited

about taking on this role. I grew up in Chilliwack attending St. Paul’s

Lutheran church, I’m a Girl Guide Leader, I run adventurous outdoor

activities with school groups, and I love tea, sword fighting, tea,

travelling, and stories. I have been hearing exciting things from Pastor Eric and Rob K about

the group and I’m looking forward to meeting everyone. When do I plan on meeting everyone

you ask? At our Youth Kickoff Party on September 16 (or at church, come say Hi to me).
