Flutist or Flautist?

"I'm a flute player not a flautist. I don't have a flaut and I've never flauted." - Sir James Galway.

For the noun referring to a person who plays the flute, Americans use flutist. In Europe flutist is more common. Flutist is by far the older word coming from the French flutiste. In the late 19th century, the word flautist came from the Italian flautista.

Share with Your Students! The first Peter Sheridan Low Flutes Opportunity Award will be awarded this fall and will support a Wisconsin student to further their knowledge of low flutes and share these wonderful instruments with others.

This year’s award will provide a $500 stipend to a middle, high school or collegiate level student residing in Wisconsin, who must use the award to pay for travel, lessons, performances, music, or other similar activities whose main purpose is education and/or performance on low flutes.

To obtain a copy of the application or poster, please visit http://madisonfluteclub.org/Sheridan-Award.html to download or print the documents.

Please note the deadline for application submission is Friday, October 14, 2016.

Youth Choirs Middle and high school youth choirs that will perform at the November 5 recital will begin rehearsals in October. Please see madisonfluteclub.org for the form to play with the group. The cost is $25 per student.
