PIONEERGUNCLUB–SEPTEMBER2016

National Cast Bullet Match: The match will be held on September 8-11 at McBride. Range 1 will be closed on those days from 7:00 am until about 5:00 pm. The main club house will be closed on the 10th and 11th but club members will still be able to sign in and to use the rest rooms. Ed Camp who has helped with the scoring for many years has some health issues so we need some club members to step up and help with the scoring. We also, need some members to help to

put up and take down targets. These shooters come from all over the United States to take part in this event. Please do your part to help us put on a quality event for our visitors. Monday Trap: You are running out of time. We stop shooting at the end of October. You are missing the fun. Shooting Trap on Monday evenings is going good in spite of the heat or cold. The shooting begins about 5:00 pm and ends about 7:30. Bring your gun, lots of shells and money and join the fun. Beginner welcome. Cost is $4.00 per round of 25 targets. We will be shooting doubles the last Monday of the month. Bring a shotgun that holds 2 shells or be able to reload very rapidly. For those who do not want to shoot doubles we will still be shooting trap on the other machine. Come join the action. Women on Target: The WOT event will take place September 17th at our McBride Range. The event is primarily for new or beginning shooter but any young lady from 12 to 100 may attend if they can safely handle a firearm and follow direction. The ladies will shoot a pistol, rifle, shotgun, bow and arrows. Attendance is full. Thanks to Connie Baum we have received an NRA grant for the WOT event. In addition to other materials, we have received most of the ammunition needed and 4 Remington 1187 20 gauge shotguns. Way to go Connie.

Shotgun Range: The roof on the shotgun storage shed has been installed on the south side. One more side to go. Thanks to Joe Tapko, Ryan Neal, Richie Gattenby, Tom Byrum and Bob Hudson for the fine work. Hopefully, by the time you read this the shed will be completed. If you have been wondering what is happening in the ponds by the shotgun fields it is Rick Lance working very hard on the new 5 stand range. Rick has drained both ponds and taken down most of the trees and brush. He is now filling in the bottom pond and the as soon as that is completed and the trees removed the construction on the actual range will begin. The plan is to have it ready for shooting early next spring. Shooting Hours: It seems that some members need to be reminded that shooting hours are from 7:00 am to sunset Monday – Friday and from 8:00 am to

sunset Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. Don’t look at your phone to see when sunset is—if you can’t see the sun it has set. The headlights on your car are not miniature Suns. September Club Meeting: The usual September Club meeting and picnic will not be held on Saturday the 10th because of the National Cast Bullet Match. Instead, the meeting will be held on September 8th at Bass Pro as usual and the picnic will be held on October 8th at McBride along with the October club meeting. The meal will be catered but we ask that you bring your favorite dessert. Please, don’t everyone bring brownies.

EXCEPT for September which will be delayed a week due to the Labor Day Holiday weekend. We shoot the complete NRA Action Pistol match including the falling plates and moving targets. 18th ANNUAL SHOW ME CUP REGION X CHAMPION-SHIP - COMING SOON !! The 18th Annual Show-Me Cup NRA Action Pistol Region X Championship will be held Sunday, October 2, 2016. Match date is Sunday, with the range available for practice Thursday, Sept 29 thru Saturday, October 1. (Range Officers will shoot for score on Saturday, October 1). We need volunteers to help with range cleanup and repair during the week prior to this important match. We also need additional Range Officers for the Sunday Match. If you can help in any way, or need additional information, please contact: Ron DeJarnette at 816-591-1653 ([email protected])

Range Damage:

This damage was done recently at the 100-yard target line on range 1. There is absolutely no reason for this kind of vandalism. This takes time to fix as well as club resources. Help us catch the individuals responsible for this stuff so we can get them out of the club.   Jack Smart  President

PIONEERGUNCLUB–SEPTEMBER2016

Our second 5-stand event of the year took place on Aug 14th and 15th. We had our largest turnout of the year with 63 rounds shot on the 5- stand field and several rounds of trap shot as well. The 5-stand targets consisted of 2 outbound targets, one “high flying” springing teal and 2 crossers. (The cross-ers seem to give the shoot- ers the

most difficutly.) Any shotgun, that will safely shoot 2 shots, is wel- come to shoot 5-stand. But, if a shooter decides to shoot a pump gun, they are automatically entered in the “Pump Gun Challenge”. Sunday had no pump gun shooters competing for the prizes in the “Pump Gun Challenge”. But, Monday had several pump gun competi-tors. The top 3 scores on the “Pump Gun Chal-lenge” were:

Dave Philips with 20 hits Mark Gish with 15 hits Zack Laudner with 15 hits. For that good shooting, they each received a spe-cial “Pioneer Gun Club Pump Gun Challenge” shooting towel. The fish fry on Sunday,

Public Sight-In Days in November, by Ed Camp Never too early to remind our members about the public hunter sight-in weekend in November. We need members to help out on the range, BUT MORE IMPORTANT, we need members to post flyers letting the public know about us doing this public service for hunters. Last year we did not get enough flyers handed out, I had lots left over. Even better, start talking about our hunter sight-in service to your friends, co-workers and neighbors now. Prepare them for it early. If you go to a gun store or any other store that sells firearms, a pawn shop or a Walmart, talk to the gun department people and let them know that

we offer this service in November and would they want you to bring by a stack of flyers for their customers before then. Help your club out, talk us up to non-members about what we offer. Look for the flyers around September, stacks of them and some posters will be available at both ranges and meetings. THANKS!

PIONEERGUNCLUB–SEPTEMBER2016

National Cast Bullet Match, by Ed Camp The Cast Bullet Association National Matches are coming back to Pioneer Gun Club in September. This is always a great event to attend. If you don’t think a cast lead bullet will shoot accurately you are very wrong. I remember measuring a National Record one year of 5 shots, measured center to center at .191 inch. That’s right, less than a quarter of an inch at one hundred yards; the two hundred yard record of 5 shots was also under ¼ inch center to center.

We have a great scoring team, but we could always use some relief. If you want to learn to measure small groups or even large groups we can teach you. If you want to help with the match in any way give Jack Smart a call or call me if you want to help score. Thanks! If you want to learn to cast and shoot cast bullets come out and see our Cast Bullet Division Director Richard Brinkman and get involved. Remember, our founding fathers all used cast bullets.

We had some great weather for August it would be nice if it would be like that all year? In October or final official match for the year we are thinking of adding a Single Shot Rifle match at 200 yards, 50 record shots 40 from bench and 10 offhand at the 25 ring target. This would be a fixed ammo, cast bullet plain base, falling block rifles, rolling block, break open actions, two piece wood stocks, NO TURN BOLTS. Black powder or smoke-less, Iron sight class, scope class with a 6 Power limit. $10 entry fee with a 70% payback, anybody want to play?

Pioneer Shooters The weather has cooled, and we are getting some nicer days to compete. Thanks to all the shooters that have pitched in over the last few months helping with the matches including Robert Riley and Stan Stohr who called the past couple of matches. It was nice for me to just shoot the match and score. Congratulations to Ken Keifer. Even with the wind at the Wittington Center he pulled off a 585 in Distinguished revolver last month. If you are new to PPC, stop by our Brickyard practice session with your Brickyard gun, strong side holster, 4 magazines/speedloaders and at least 60

USPSA

Come shoot indoor every Tuesday at Brickyard and the last Sunday of every month Outside at Mcbride.

We are planning a Zombie Shoot , October 25th at Brickyard!

Families All Shooting Together

F.A.S.T.

Another session in the books. Last month (August) we had 21 participants and 3 staff members. Of those 21, 4 had never fired a firearm before. We had shooters as young as 6 years old. We even had activi-ties available for those

not shooting or just waiting their turn. That is what this event is all about! Ice water and cold Gatorade kept us all cool and hydrated. Three of our participants also helped both on the line and in the staging area. It was a great day. Our next gath-ering, and the last one for this year, will be on Sunday, Sep-tember 11 at 2:00 on range 5. We have reduced the number of rounds fired each month and are focusing on quality shots and careful aiming. This is the first time we kept track of scores, and I was pleasantly surprised by the results. When I

started planning this, I figured we would be lucky to keep all shots on an 18”x18” target. Well we are generally keeping all shots in a 3-4” bull. Perhaps it is time to move back or use more challenging targets or both. All of the shooters are now very familiar with, and capable of safely operating a Ruger 10/22. Next month we will add the AR 15 platform and see how the scores look. I could still use a few more member helpers. If you have been considering checking out what we are doing, come on out in September and lend a hand.

NRA Basic Pistol Shoo ng Course You will learn the basics of safely handling, shooting, maintaining a handgun and more. The NRA has changed the Basic Pistol Course from a one day course to a new Blended Learning Format. This course is open to club members, family, and friends. Must be 18 years of age. This course does have a cost. Phase one with the NRA is classroom on line. There are 11 sections to the course. Course time is about 8 hours and have up to 90 days. Phase 2 is the range time. I am supplying the ammunition and the pistols. I will also have center fire pistols they can try near the end of the course. I am looking at the range time to be about 3 hrs but if the student need’s more time to be proficient in handling a hand gun that will be done. Contact Mike Baum 816-779-7560 [email protected]

WHAT TO BRING: You must have completed the NRA Basic Pistol Class to take this class. This is done online. To sign up for the online course go to: https://onlinetraining.nra.org/. The Phase II portion will be done as part of this class. Once you have completed Phase I, I will email you the Phase II lesson plans for this course. Print them out and bring them to the class. They are easier to use if you punch holes in them and put them in a 3-hole binder. The binder should be 1 1/2 -2 inches thick so you can put other materials in it. You do not have to be a NRA member to take this class but being a member will make getting your credentials easier and faster. If you are going to join please do so before the course. Also, please bring pencils, pen, highliter and hearing and eye protection. You will also need to bring a sack lunch and drinks since there are no eating facilities nearby. If you are a certified instruc-tor in another discipline (rifle or shotgun) please bring your Trainer Guide with you. Bring your firearm with at least 200 rounds of factory ammunition. Dress for the weather. We will shoot rain or shine. There is to be no live ammunition in the classroom at any time. COST: Cost of the course is $250.00.
