Show? What Show?
Hello Piecemakers!
I have been asked to write something about our upcoming
Showcase of Quilts! For those of you who have been to many
Shows, and especially for our newer members, I will try to share
both old & new information!
First, let's talk about the name of the show and it's theme. The
Quilting Guild of The Villages has always referred to its quilt
show as "Showcase of Quilts". Held on even numbered years in
the third week in January, our show often has a theme. Our
theme this year is "Quilting 'round the Square".
We wanted to focus on our Villages environment of small town
squares where activities abound!
Second, what can you expect from our show and what's new
this time? Our fabulously talented members' quilts are the main
focus, of course. We expect well over 200 quilts and they will be
lavishly displayed in the theater at Savannah Center. Look for
some surprises when you walk into the theater! We expect
more than 20 vendors, and you will receive a list as it gets
closer. Our boutique is a must see destination for the show.
Remember you can sell your completed fabric/quilted items.
They will be displayed in a professional and attractive manner!
Other venues include an antique quilt display, demos ongoing
both days, silent auction items, the charity quilt raffle, and of
course, the gift basket auction. What's new this time? We will
have a doll exhibit, and the art quilt group will have a display in
the lobby. We will also honor deceased members, and display
some of the 4H Club's quilts. Also expect to see the Viewer's
Choice award winning quilt from the last show!
Finally, we expect that this show will exceed all of your
expectations! Remember that admission is free for all Quilting
Guild of The Villages members! I encourage all of you to
participate as much as you are able by entering a quilt or
helping with our chapter's responsibilities (Gift Basket Auction).
See you at the Show!

Come out and sew with us all day
from 11:30am to 3:50pm. Lots of fun
for everyone. They even have special
themes going on some Sunday’s.
Quilt of the Week seems to have all of us bringing in one of our treasures to show to the rest of
the group. Please volunteer to bring in one of yours.
This teacup quilt was done by Eula and she got the idea from a Hallmark Card. The tea cups
were cut out and Trapunto quilted and appliqued on. So pretty, makes you want to get your tea pot out
and brew some. See below for the explanation of Trapunto quilting if you don’t know what it is. I
didn’t.
method of quilting that is also called
"stuffed technique." A puffy, decorative
feature, trapunto utilizes at least two
layers, the underside of which is slit and
padded, producing a raised surface on
the quilt.

Wanda did this mystery quilt but it was from awhile
back. The colors are very rich looking and she said
she had a lot of fun working on it. It is called “On the
Road Again” and was quilted by Country Boy. (Do you
think Willie Nelson had anything to do with the name
of this one).
Thanks Wanda for Sharing
.
I am sure our Chapter will recognize these lady’s. How about some of the original ladies that got The
Villages Quilt Guild started. Because I am a newbie I was intrigued by the way it all started. I hope I get
this right, if not let me know and I will put it right in the next newsletter.
A group of women wondered why The Villages didn’t have a quilting club. Some of them went to
Paradise Center and found that they could not have a room until they decided on a day. After finding
others that would be interested, the 1st meeting was at Margie’s house and it was decided that Tuesday
would be the day. They got the room, not the one we are presently in but it was in the back part of
Paradise. This was the start of our quilting guild. They named themselves “Villages Quilting Guild”.
Others started to join but not all knew how to quilt and the original girls were helping each other learn
new things. The new group (those who didn’t know how to quilt) went to another room, hired teachers
to show them how to quilt and after 1-2 years(not sure how long) it was decided that the teachers were
not needed but these ladies stayed in that room and are now the “B’s” and they became the 2ND group.
These 2 groups were the only ones for years. When they remodeled Paradise Center the groups went to
Laurel Manor for that time. When it came time to go back to Paradise some decided they wanted to
stay at Laurel Manor and The Villages gave them a room there. Our group and the B’s went back to
Paradise. This was also the time that The Villages became a Guild. Now they did not want us to keep our
name and so after a meeting and different suggestions we became “Piecemakers”. This was the
beginning, and as they say, look how far we have come. There is more and when I get that info I will
continue the story.
Thank you ladies for getting this started and I am happy to have chosen to be a part of this. I hope this is
accurate but I am sure there is more to this story than I have written. More to come I hope.
HERE ARE A FEW OF EVENTS COMING UP IN THE FUTURE…………………………
OCTOBER 8TH there will be a creative quilters market at the Savannah Center. Whatever you can create
can be put out so it is not only quilting but crafts as well. See Esther for more details if you are
interested. You can just go and buy if you like, I am sure they will have lots and lots of merchandise to
choose from.
OCTOBER 11TH THE B’S are having a bus trip to Lake Mary to go to the Bernina Center where we will get
a 10% discount and then head to another quilt shop for more fun. We will be traveling by Motor coach
and the cost is $25.00. If you think you want to go, Jenine ( I believe) from the B’s will be more than
happy to talk to you. We will leave at 8am and probably be home around 4-5pm.
MARCH OF 2017……………the Guild will have Alex Anderson of TV with the PBS show (she did or does)
here for 3 events, all day at the New Covenant Church. I know March seems like a long way off but it
will come up quickly. More details when they become available.
Wanda is doing our quilt of the month and it is the mini
bow tie block. Once again it is a 12 inch block and I hope
all that are doing this got the directions. If not, see
Wanda or you can go to quilters cache and get the
pattern. Remember this is due on September 13th during
our all day sew. Have fun.
UFO’S ARE ALMOST DUE SO GET A MOVE ON……………….SEPTEMBER 20TH IS THE DUE DATE DON’T
FORGET A FREE LUNCH IS AVAILABLE FOR THOSE THAT DO FINISH……………
Quilt of the Week August 9th
“Magic Vine”. These panels were given to
Ida by a lady she worked with in the soup
kitchen, Kay Bertzyk. She didn’t want these
panels even though it belonged to her
Grandmothers Sister. Ida finished it and
returned it to her. She still didn’t want it so
Ida kept it for a while. A family reunion
brought it back to them but not one person
wanted to keep it, one said he would sell it
but Kay said no, if anyone is going to keep it,
it will be Ida. So it now has a home with her
and she is enjoying this special antique.
BTW, Ida said the Grandmother passed
away in 1966 and Ida received it in 2009.
That’s 43 years later so it’s much older than
that. Job well done.
Darlene brought in this beautiful
quilt that she made for her
mother. She was asked to do a
day bed quilt and wanted to
match the Oriental rug in front of
it. The other request was that she
use her Aunt’s Egyptian cotton
sheet in it. Darlene paper pieced
this fan pattern, used the sheet in
the fan and then put in on the
back. She also made two
pillowcases and put the fan on
each of them. The fans are paper
pieced and she said it took her a
while to figure out what she
wanted to do and our own Esther
helped her come up with the
finished product. Esther also
quilted it for her.
Quilt of the Week August 16th
Other pictures from Show and Tell………………..A no tie apron from Joan, a crown
royal quilting (think she was bored while away) and a spool quilt from Cookie
Mom Barb.
Lunch with Bradenton is scheduled for November. There may be a challenge quilt coming from them. It
is a small 24 inch square that when done will be donated to “The Giving Dolls”. More info to come.
This is the result of our tote
bag class by Esther. Some of
these ladies made 2 and 3 and
some are still working on them
and others are just enjoying
seeing them. Thank you Esther
for your time and patience.
What is your next class project
for us? It is great that we can
do these in our all day sews
