    A celebration of Labor Day

I’m sad to say the summer has come to an end -the kids have tucked away their bikes and kick balls and gathered together their school supplies. Of course for us adults, it’s the same old routine. So, to break up the monotony and celebrate the people who have worked hard to make our world amazing, we have some great programming on Labor Day (September 7th, in case you were wondering.)

Kicking off the special programming at 9AM, we delve into The Mind of an Innovator. We’re told almost daily that we need innovation; that it drives prosperity and economic growth and is the engine of job creation. We’ll hear about these innovations all the time. But do we ever stop and wonder where the innovation comes from? What fosters it? How we keep it flowing? In this program, we’ll hear the stories of some of real-world change-makers, examine just where their big ideas come from and demonstrate exactly how innovators cultivate an environment of curiosity and experimentation.

At 10AM, we’ll hear an honest, intimate and informative portrait of an unusual occupation and the Native Americans who made it their own – the Skywalkers of Akwesane. For over a hundred years the Mohawks of Akwesasne, a reservation on the New York-Canada border, pursued the occupation of ironworkers, one of the most dangerous jobs in construction. Mohawks were on the high steel crews of every bridge andskyscraper in Manhattan, commuting between job and their 12-hour-distant home every weekend.

Once people listen to The Roundtable in the morning they are likely to become regular listeners since there is nothing like our morning panel and the next two hours of extraordinary talent. People will be amazed at the top-flight authors and public personalities who join Joe Donahue and his able producer, Sarah LaDuke, to keep the mornings exciting and vibrant.

Of course, not everybody understands that voices intellectually contesting with one another are what democracy is all about. Our incredible morning panel, under Joe’s guidance, is so much fun precisely because we know that we all love one another. We had a recent phone call from someone who said, “I love that you fight and I also love the respect and love that is evidenced in the room.” Now there is a person who gets what it’s all about.

During a recent Roundtable we heard from a regular listener and contributor who wrote, “I’m waiting to see [on our video streaming] Rosemary haul off and belt Alan in one of the breaks. I just hope you guys are recording.” Now there’s a guy who gets it and wants in on the action.

I couldn’t write this without mentioning that we have an early October fund drive coming up. Nothing, but nothing, frightens me more. Will we be able to continue on our roll of successful million dollar fund drives? This is when we all really come together as a community and do our best to keep it all going. I’m always scared to death that we won’t make it. Now we are in the middle of a great fiscal crisis, starting in China and crossing the Pacific, and there is certain to be concern in each of our households and businesses. The good news is that we’ve been through this before and amazingly things went just like they always do -- well.

The thought of the station going under is just too much for people to deal with. The beauty of a WAMC fund drive has always been that whatever you put into the pot is just fine. Each person according to their ability to do what they can is what this is all about. I can’t tell you how many times what started out as a five dollar contribution, ended up many years later with a note that said, “You took my five dollars, now take my thousand.”

So for all of you who get it, I say, we love you and we hope that you’ll be there day one of the October fund drive. We need you and you know that. - Alan

They became famous for their skill, daring and major contribution to the skyline of New York. This is the story of men plying a difficult craft in the modern world while cleaving to tribal customs in an ancient world -- a balancing act that has taken its toll in lives and relationships.

Then at 10:30, we’ll hear how the types of workers in New Orleans have evolved in Changing Communities, Imminent Threats: Katrina's Legacy. On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina ripped through the Southern Gulf Coast. Ten years later, it’s estimated there are nearly 100,000 fewer African Americans living in the city of New Orleans. Drawn by reconstruction work, the number of Latino immigrants has nearly doubled. Reconstruction after Hurricane Katrina drew thousands of people from India, Brazil, Mexico, Honduras, and other Latin American countries. Workers were charged with pulling dead bodies from abandoned homes and rebuilding New Orleans. But the influx of migrant workers also increased immigration crackdowns. We talk to residents about how the city has transformed since Hurricane Katrina and the resulting friction.

11AM brings us to a topic no one likes to talk about, and it’s Fired: Tales of Jobs Gone Bad. Just ask actor and commentator Annabelle Gurwitch. Shortly after landing a part in a play directed by her idol, Woody Allen, she was fired because of so-called “creative differences” between her and the director. Gurwitch channeled her disbelief and bitterness into something more constructive, creating the show you’re about to hear. She began calling up her friends and colleagues, and found that everyone had a compelling and often hilarious story to tell. Please note that there is some explicit content in this program, and may not be suitable for a younger audience.

Closing out our day of special programming is Alan Chartock...In Conversation with William Adler, the author of The Man Who Never Died: The Life, Times and Legacy of Joe Hill, American Labor Icon. – Katie

WAMC’s October Fund Drive starts on Monday, October 5 at 6 A.M. and we are looking for volunteers.

There are 300 volunteer hours to fill every day of every drive, just to take pledges from callers. WAMC has three $1M Fund Drives annually – February, June, and October – and volunteers are needed until we reach our goal. That’s a lot of ringing phones!

Is Social Security the Forgotten Nest Egg?Provided by RBC Wealth Management and Thomas E. Brockley

For years, questions regarding the solvency of the U.S. Social Security System have prompted many investors to assume that Social Security benefits simply won’t be around when they retire.

But for Baby Boomers looking to leave the workforce in the near term, Social Security is still an important piece of the retirement income pie. In fact, for many, it can be a much larger piece than they would have ever expected.

The biggest challenge for Baby Boomers with respect to Social Security isn’t whether they will receive the benefit, but at what age they should start collecting payments. There is no one “right” answer to the question of when, because everyone’s situation is different, but one thing is certain: Timing is everything.

Most people know they can begin accepting Social Security benefits as early as 62, but most don’t realize that by not waiting until their “full retirement age” of 66 to 67, they reduce their monthly checks by 25 to 30 percent.

In fact, according to the Social Security Administration, 73 percent of people collect their benefits early. Some do so because they fear the program won’t be around for much longer. Others are simply afraid they may die early. But for many, it’s not understanding the cumulative lifetime benefits they may be giving up, which can be substantial.

While it makes sense for some people to begin collecting social security benefits right at age 62, many people are leaving money on the table simply because they don’t know that their monthly benefit increases the longer they wait to retire.

If you continue to defer Social Security benefits beyond your full retirement age of 66 to 67, your monthly payments will increase 8 percent each year until they “max out” at age 70.

While age and life expectancy are important factors in your decision to retire, you must also take into account other sources of revenue, such as income from employment and withdrawals from your IRA, 401(k) or other retirement accounts.

The many possible combinations of those various factors give each person a number of different Social Security “claiming strategies” to consider.

For a married couple both age 62, for example, there are 81 different age combinations that could be used to claim Social Security payments.

Finding the right strategy is a complex exercise that is often considered more art than science. And figuring it out on your own can be daunting. That’s where a good financial advisor, who knows your financial picture and retirement goals well, can be of great help.
