THE B-52’s | Oct. 30The B-52’s are a classic rags-to-riches story. Motley crew of outsider misfits comes togeth-er to play music at wild parties for friends in late-1970s Athens, Ga. Thanks to left-of-center hits like “Rock Lobster” and “Planet Claire,” the band’s beach-party-gone-bonkers sound catches the early 1980s (new) wave of alternative music, riding that burgeoning tsunami to mainstream success and interna-tional acclaim.

Now, 35 years later, the legends — Cindy Wilson, Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Keith Strickland and Ricky Wilson — return to Atlanta for “The B-52s Halloween Scream,” a campy All Hallows Eve show. Audience members are encouraged to dress in their most fabulous costumes, wigs, glitter and glow sticks.

Just make sure you wear comfortable shoes so you don’t hurt yourself when you “Dance This Mess Around.”

STRAIGHT NO CHASER | Nov. 13Many talented acts rose to stardom with the

help of YouTube. Few, however, can match the success of this former Indiana Univer-sity a cappella group. A video of its 1998 performance of “The 12 Days of Christmas” (which incorporated snippets of “I Have a Little Dreidel” and Toto’s “Africa”) went viral in 2006, amassing more than 18 million views and landing it a five-album deal with Atlantic Records.

The 10-member group has released four albums and three EPs since then, but its artists are best known as the kings of a cappella Christmas music. For their “New Old-Fash-

JOE BONAMASSA | Nov. 20-21What were you doing when you were 12? New York-bred Joe Bonamassa was an over-achiever, opening shows for legendary blues-man B.B. King. At age 4, encouraged by his blues-loving dad, Joe began aping guitar icons like Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck. Touring like

a pro on weekends throughout his teen years, Bonamassa has since become one of the most respected blues guitarists in the business.

He’s had numerous No. 1 albums on the Billboard Blues Charts, played with his idol Clapton at London’s Royal Albert Hall and earned a Grammy nod for his collaboration with Beth Hart.

He’s touring in support of his 2014 album, Different Shades of Blue, his first to feature mostly original tunes. He also runs a nonprof-it, the Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation, which focuses on furthering music education

KEITH & KRISTYN GETTY — JOY: AN IRISH CHRISTMAS | Dec. 21Modern hymn writers Keith and Kristyn Getty are among the most popular Christian music acts to come along in years, reinventing the form by blending traditional and contem-porary gospel with classical and Celtic musical influences.

Born in Northern Ireland, the couple moved to the United States in 2006, basing themselves in Nashville and working with songwriting partner Stuart Townend. Their song “In Christ Alone” was voted the No. 2 best-loved hymn of all time in the United Kingdom, and their songs have been recorded by such artists as Alison Krauss, Owl City, Ricky Skaggs and the Newsboys.

This tour finds them performing selections from their 2011 album Joy: An Irish Christ-mas, a jubilant celebration of the season that includes original songs alongside classics like

“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and “Carol of the Bells.”

WIDESPREAD PANIC | Dec. 29-31Another longtime Athens favorite, Widespread Panic is among the world’s most beloved jam bands, frequently compared to legends like the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band.

Co-founding guitarists John Bell and Michael Houser began playing together in their University of Georgia dorm in 1981, but it took five years (during which bassist Dave Schools and drummer Todd Nance signed on) before they played their first show as Wide-spread Panic.

In the past 29 years, Widespread Panic has emerged as one of the hardest-touring bands around, known for never playing the same set list twice.

The musicians are touring to support their 12th studio album, Street Dogs (released Sept. 25). Their three shows at the Fox likely will welcome the new year with memorable mara-thon jam sessions.

In the beginning, railroads built At-lanta. Now, two centuries later, those

same rail lines are reinvigorating the city in a foward-thinking way.

We’re talking about the Atlanta BeltLine, the 22-mile loop for fitness, families and ev-eryone, that follows the many abandoned rain lines lacing the city.

Some say the BeltLine, a monumental work in progress, is the biggest thing to happen to Atlanta since the 1996 Olympic Games.

But the Olympics ended. The BeltLine is here to stay. It means economic growth, trans-portation solutions, sweeping revitalization and renewal of intown neighborhoods, cleanup and refurbishment of industrial wastelands, expand-ed and enhanced green spaces, and a fantastic new avenue for fitness, art, entertainment and other programs.

Thousands take to the pathways every week, as the ambitious project transforms intown life and the city itself, while creating buzz all over the world.

The BeltLine, considered the most com-prehensive revitalization effort ever undertaken by the city of Atlanta, and touted as one of the largest, most wide-ranging urban redevel-opment and mobility projects anywhere in the nation, is a mighty big thing to explain. But we’re going to try. Keep in mind that the BeltLine changes and grows on an almost daily basis. To stay up-to-date on all things BeltLine, the website (see LINKS sidebar on Page 20) is your best resource.

ZEN TIME “The BeltLine is my life,” says Terri Hull, a dental hygienist who’s lived in the Little Five Points/Candler Park neighborhood for 27 years. She hits the Eastside Trail to jog and speed-walk four or five times a week.C

“I walk out my door, around the corner to the path at Freedom Parkway and the Carter Center. Then I have a choice. I can turn right and go all the way to Piedmont Park, or to the Midtown theater shopping center, where I can stop in at Arden’s Garden and get a Grand Slam energy boost. Or, I can go left toward Rathbun’s and smell the steaks, or even stop in for a martini – and then crawl home.”

The BeltLine “makes me feel more safe and secure than I used to,” Hull says. “Every chance I get, I’m wanting to be out there by myself, listening to my music, going at my own pace. I call it my Zen time.”

BELTLINE BASICS“Really great cities,” says Paul Morris, Atlanta BeltLine president and CEO, “are an amalgam of many small villages.”

Here’s a look at where those villages stand now and where they’re headed.

The pear-shaped BeltLine circles the city’s

urban core and will eventually connect 45 intown neighborhoods. It’s expected to be fin-ished by 2030. Every year brings new pavings and programs, new access and amenities, and plenty of ribbon-cutting ceremonies.

Three trails are open now:The North Side Trail is a one-mile section

that passes through Tanyard Creek Park and links the Ardmore Park and Collier Hills neighborhoods.

The Eastside Trail is a 2.25-mile path from Midtown to Inman Park and the Historic Fourth Ward.

The West End Trail is 2.4 miles that con-nects the Mozley Park and Westview areas.

When finished, the trail system will encom-pass 33 miles and include offshoots that already do, or will, branch off from the main loop. For example, the woodsy 1.15-mile Southwest Con-nector Spur Trail starts at the existing Lionel Hampton Trail and reaches Westwood Avenue. It ultimately will expand to 4.5 miles. The

planning and executing the project, from phase-by-phase construction and acquiring land and access, to securing public funding. 404.477.3003.

‘HOW DID THIS EVER HAPPEN?’Many people know the BeltLine’s back story. Here’s the fast answer for those who don’t. Ryan Gravel, a Georgia Tech grad student, envisioned the BeltLine more than 15 years ago after enjoying a “walkable” visit to Paris and examining Atlanta’s rail corridors on old city maps. His idea became his 1999 master’s thesis in architecture and city planning and gained steam as a sustainable grass-roots effort.

Pathos Sweet Lost and Found

recently finished Eastside Trail Gateway in His-toric Fourth Ward Park leads a short distance to 12 acres of green space, a 2-acre lake and a new playground with a generous splash pad.

The BeltLine project includes 1,300 acres of new, expanded or renovated parks. Hundreds of thousands of trees and shrubs are being planted, an effort led by Trees Atlanta.

Bike rental shops, ice cream parlors, restau-rants and other businesses are popping up all along the BeltLine, often reclaiming long-dor-mant but sturdy buildings. The King of Pops, for example, strategically sells its icy delights out of a walkup window near the end of Inman Park’s Elizabeth Street, just a few minutes’ walk from the Eastside Trail skate park.

Pedestrian-friendly transit will gradually be added alongside the core path. BeltLine trains will be part of the 50-mile Atlanta Streetcar network. Planners promise easy access to MARTA at many points.

On BeltLine sections now open, you’ll find programs, activities and performance spaces taking shape and being planned. An urban farm program, for one, has sprouted in the southwest

part of the city. You’ll be able to pick up fresh produce from community gardens here.

Free Tuesday night yoga classes take place on the big lawn at the Historic Fourth Ward Skatepark. You also can sign up for free hikes, nature explorations, group runs and fitness classes that range from aerobics and tai chi to pilates and self-defense.

LANTERN PARADE, WINE STROLL“The BeltLine is a living, breathing thing,” says Eric Goldberg, who spearheads the annual Wine Stroll on the Eastside Trail in late Sep-tember. “It’s just where you want to be.”

The third annual Wine Stroll — on Sept. 26 — is expected to sell out fast. Restaurants and businesses at 24 stops along the Eastside Trail will give patrons a 2-ounce pour and appetizers. (1-5 p.m. $50.)

Before that, though, Art on the Atlanta BeltLine officially opens its season Sept. 12 with the Lantern Parade. The procession of

BY THE NUMBERSThe full projected cost of the BeltLine is $4.4 bil-lion, paid for by a combination of public (the city of Atlanta; the Atlanta BeltLine Tax Allocation District or TAD; county, regional, state and fed-eral grants), private investment and donations.• 1.2 million people visited the Eastside Trail in

2014, about 21,000 a week. It’s the busiest part of the BeltLine.

• 12,900 hours have been logged by volunteers cleaning and beautifying the trails.

• 26 quarter-mile segments have been adopted by 43 groups committed to one year of service. The BeltLine has generated about a 6-to-1 return on investment, with more than $2.4 billion in new private real estate devel-opment. A half mile of the Eastside Trail has already generated more than $860 million in redevelopment.

• The overall plan includes 5,600 units of afford-able housing over 25 years.

You’ll see projects in progress and learn what’s next. The tour is a good way to experience the scope and breadth of intown living. Tours depart from the Inman Park MARTA station at 9:30 a.m. Fridays-Saturdays. Each month’s registration opens at 9 a.m. on the 15th of the preceding month.

A TOUGH JOB, BUT ...I made a casino visit recently in the name of research, and that meant a stop at the Seminole Hard Rock Tampa Hotel and Casino. I chose a random Wednesday and was sur-prised to find the casino chock-full of gamblers. Who knew?

Surpised, I conducted an informal survey and found various reasons for why, in the middle of a sunny weekday, these people were parked at a blackjack table. Their answers:

I’m avoiding mowing the lawn. Again.

It’s the first day off I’ve taken in weeks, and this seemed like a good place to meditate.

Life’s short. I play hard.

If any of those answers describes you, great. If not, here are my five top takeaways from this property. Feel free to adapt them to any casino resort you favor.

START AT THE POOL. The lap pool here has underwater speakers pumping solid vibes that get your engines started while your body floats and decompresses. Plus it offers cool private poolside Seminole chickee huts.

GET THEE TO THE SPA OR SALON. Here you get Hard Rock’s “Rhythm & Motion,” an immersive music-centric menu using amplified vibrations, pressures and patterns to take you on a rhythmic massage journey. Yes, please!

ROCK THE MEMORABILIA. It’s everywhere. Consider signing up for the “Sound of Your Stay,” an amenities package that, with one call to the front desk, brings a world-class Fender guitar, other instruments and a few surprises to your room. No time limit. No charge. No, really.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD. Your experience at oh-so-chic Council Oaks Steak & Seafood begins with a waterfall at the entrance and the butcher shop you pass en route to your table (you can choose your own hand-cut steak or chop). It serves steak tartare, surf-and-turf, truffle fries and everything in between. Dessert? The famous Council Oak 151 Volcano is flambéed tableside.

PLAY AND PEOPLE-WATCH: The casino was almost anti-climactic. It has all the usual games, but amped up the Hard Rock way. It’s a gamer’s paradise, filled with all ages and ethnicities. For me, though, people-watching is half the fun.

THE THEATREA fully restored 1929 “Movie Palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,665 seats, is a multiple-purpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballet, symphonies, concerts, movies, and private corporate events.

PRIVATE ROOMSThe Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, with accommodations for 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. TICKET OFFICEThe Fox Theatre Ticket Office is located in the arcade entrance to the theatre. The Ticket Office is open for walk up ticket sales Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., and Saturday,10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The Fox Theatre Ticket Office is not open on Sundays unless there is a performance. On event days, the Ticket Office opens two hours prior to show time. Doors to the Fox open one hour prior to show time. Tickets for all performances at the Fox may be purchased online at www.FoxTheatre.org, all Ticket Alternative outlets and all Atlanta-area Whole Foods Markets, by calling 855-285-8499, or by visiting the Fox Theatre Ticket Office in person during regular Box Office hours.

GROUP SALESThe Fox Theatre Group Sales Department offers discounts to Groups for most Broadway shows. The Group Sales office is open Monday-Friday from 9am to 5pm. Call 404 881-2000 or email [email protected].

CONCESSIONSConcession stands are located in the Spanish Room, main lobby, and on the mezzanine lobby level.

RESTROOMSRestrooms are located off the Main Lobby (downstairs), Mezzanine Lobby levels, and the Gallery level. Accessible restroom facilities are located in the Spanish Room and Accessible/Family restrooms are located through the Office door in the main lobby.

GIFT SHOPThe Fox Theatre operates a gift shop selling history books, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and an assortment of other theatre-related merchandise. The gift shop is located in the Spanish Room.

TOURSFox Theatre Tours are conducted Mondays and Thursdays at 10 AM, 11 AM, noon and 1 PM. Saturday tours are offered at 10 AM and 11 AM. Fox Theatre Tours are guided by Fox employees well-versed in the Fox’s history, current events, awards, and upcoming shows. Tickets for Fox Theatre Tours are available at the Fox Theatre Ticket Office or online at www.foxtheatre.org. Special Tours can range from backstage to architectural to a school or college group. Please contact the Fox Theatre by calling 404.881.2100 to schedule your group tour.

LOST AND FOUNDLost and found items are turned in to the Event Staff ’s office. To check on lost items, please call 404-881-2119. Lost and found items will be retained for 30 days.

EMERGENCY INFORMATIONIn the event of an emergency, and for your safety, please follow the directions provided by the Fox Theatre staff.

SMOKING In accordance with the Fulton County Clean Air Ordinance, the Fox Theatre is a smoke-free facility. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas.

ABOUT ACCESSIBILITYThe Fox Theatre strives to make events accessible to all guests. If you require assistance during your visit to the Fox Theatre please seek out or ask for one of our Accessible Ambassadors. These staff members are attired in the traditional Fox Theatre uniform however also have gold braid and white gloves to make them easier to see. The Fox Theatre offers the use of wheelchairs, listening devices and booster seats at no additional charge. Our Ambassadors will assist you to special restroom accommodations. Note: Steep Steps lead to all seats on the upper levels. For assistance needed or additional information on programs, please contact the Event Staff’s office at: 404-881-2119.

TICKETSTo purchase accessible seating at the Fox Theatre please call: 404-881-2016 Monday through Friday, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM or on Saturday, 10:00 AM-3:00 PM. A Fox Theatre Ticket Office Associate will be happy to help you. Ticket buyers may also visit the ticketing site at www.foxtheatre.org.

PROGRAMS PROVIDEDOpened Captioning Performance Sponsored in partnership through TDF (Theatre Development Fund).

ELEVATORSElevators are located at the north end of each lobby. The elevators are available during all performances and make it possible to access each lobby without the use of stairs. Patrons should be aware that access to upper seating areas do involve stairs.

PARKINGParking is available within a four-block radius in all directions of the Fox Theatre. Advanced reserved parking is available for sale at the Fox Ticket Office or by calling 855-285-8499. The Fox Theatre assumes no responsibility for vehicles parked in any of the privately owned parking lots operating in the Fox Theatre district.

PERFORMANCE NOTESAll patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket in order to be admitted to the theatre. Not all events are suitable for children. Infants will not be admitted to adult programs/performances. Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the management, in conjunction with the wishes of the producers. Please turn off all pagers and cell phones prior to the beginning of each performance. Camera and recording devices are strictly prohibited. Backstage employees are represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E.)

3. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting.

4. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers.

5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point.

6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose.

7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show.

8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag.

9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic.

10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you.

11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.

About 12 months ago the Fox Theatre announced a yearlong celebration to thank its hometown on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the “Save the Fox” effort.

We all know how that turned out. So the Fox and its people packed the recent past with special initiatives. Look back with us through this some of the highlights:

On Sept. 23, 2014, a press conference kicked off the yearlong celebration. Attendees included Mayor Kasim Reed, comic and Georgia native Jeff Foxworthy, and Valerie Jackson, philanthropist and widow of the late mayor Maynard Jackson.

Sharon Frank of Palmetto, a lifelong Georgian, was named the Fox’s biggest fan. She received a prize package that included Delta Air Lines vouchers, show tickets and her name in lights on the theater’s marquee.

A concert-event taping in November brought together an extraordinary collection of artists to celebrate the music of Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, whose musicians assisted in the Save the Fox campaign.

Dahlonega’s Holly Theatre was awarded a $10,000 grant through the Fox’s nonprofit Fox Theatre Institute.

SCAD students designed the portable “Fox in a Box” interactive school exhibit (above) that was built by Atlanta design firm Station16 Creative. The exhibit focuses on how important events in the theater’s timeline intersect with key classroom lessons, from American history and the civil rights movement, to economics and the importance of communities.

Throwback pricing (from 1985) was offered for the Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival’s screening of Back to the Future.

Foxworthy did a one-night-only show to commemorate the anniversary.

In June, streets near the theater were closed for the free “Rock the Block” thank-you party. It featured entertainment from Francine Reed, Bogey & the Viceroys, DejaBlue Grass Band, Orchestra Ma Cuba, and Tribute — A Celebration of the Allman Brothers Band, plus tours of the Fox, food and drink, prizes and awareness-raising.
