As an additional note, there is a local couple who encouraging others to write their own psalms and put them to music. Jeff and Connie Pinkerton are sponsoring a Psalm writer competition at the We Hope Ranch in Chapel Hill. I met Jeff while working on a home during Mission Week in Tyler this sum-mer. He and Connie feel Christian songwriters need to be developed, supported and rewarded, so they hold this competition. The contest is free to enter and open to all ages, all styles of Christian music. The event will be held over a Friday evening and the following Saturday afternoon, October 23rd & 24th. The Saturday event is free and open to the public. If you would like more information, go to www.wehopeevents.com.

Dear Lanes Chapel Church Family: One of my favorite books in the whole Bible is Psalms. It has the full range of human emotions. There is great celebration and joy, sadness and heartache, anger that grows to rage, repentance and forgiveness, and always overall, praise to God for what He has done, is doing, and is going to do. The Psalms are written as a form of Hebrew poetry. One of the distinctions of Hebrew poetry is that it is not dependent upon rhyme or meter as English po-etry is. Rather, it utilizes repetition. I believe this is by God’s providence, for this kind of poetry can be translated into any language. As you read through the Psalms, at times you will find a phrase that is repeated or is restated in different words. Often times it is described as a prayer journal for much of the Psalms are prayers. Because it is a prayer journal, if you are having trouble praying and don’t know what to pray, read a few Psalms out loud and let the psalmists pray for you. Out of the 150 Psalms, I am certain they will hit upon a nerve or say exactly what you need to say. This is a practice I have utilized myself and have recommended to oth-ers for several years. It is also an early hymnal for the Psalms were meant to be sung in worship. The leader of the singing would sing or chant the first line of the psalm (The Lord is my shepherd) and the congregation would answer back with the next (I shall not want). The use of Psalms in worship and as inspiration for other songs continues today. They are the basis for some of our hymns, such as The King of Love My Shepherd Is (Psalm 23), and for some Contemporary Christian songs, such as King of Glory (Psalm 24) by Third Day. Their timelessness affects us even now. They bring joy and comfort, conviction, forgiveness, and inspiration. I encourage you to read one today. (Did you know that if you read 5 Psalms a day you will read the whole book in a month?) Blessings,

Jeff

CHILDREN STUDENTS

September is here!!! We are excited to be starting a new church year with several new students in the Stu-dent Ministry. God allowed us to have an incredible sum-mer that included VBS, camp, a mission trip, a Frisco RoughRiders game, Hurricane Harbor, and hosting over 100 students at Lanes Chapel for a UM Army. While sum-mer was fun, I am always glad for the school year to start. September means cooler weather (hopefully) and the return of our Wednesday night activities for our stu-dents. Wednesday Night Bible Study Our first normal Wednesday night will be on September 2nd. We will start with food a little before 6pm. We will play some games and have a time of Bible Study. While the program ends right around 7pm, students are en-couraged to stay and hang out until we close the youth building at 7:30pm. Wednesday nights typically feature topic driven studies that are applicable to many different things our students are experiencing. Sunday School While our Sunday morning study continues on a regular basis all year, September sees us welcome our incoming 6th graders. They always provide energy and new per-spective to our lessons. To start the year, we will be con-tinuing our study on the elements of the faith that began last fall. Are You Ready for some Football? It is time for the 2nd annual Lanes Chapel Fantasy Foot-ball League. The draft for our season will be on Sunday September 6th at 2pm. If you are interested in playing please email me @ [email protected]. Our league features a standard snake-style draft that is con-ducted online. We use the NFL.com fantasy football platform. Could the Student Ministry be the Place for You? Our student ministry continues to grow. It is exciting to see all of the new faces that are a part of all of the things that we do. To help with growth of our ministry, we need some more help. Right now we are in need of someone to help with teaching on Sunday Mornings. If you are interested in being a part of the Student Ministry, please contact me and I can tell you all about the ways you can help out. Grace & Peace, Stephen O’Neal

Notes from Melody One of my favorite songs right now is a contemporary worship song called Holy Spirit. It’s written by and sung by Francesa Battistelli. Our choir is learning a choral arrangement of it and our praise team is working on a worship arrangement and will introduce it to you in a few weeks. Here are the words: There's nothing worth more That could ever come close No thing can compare You're our living hope Your pres-ence, Lord I've tasted and seen Of the sweetest of loves Where my heart becomes free And my shame is undone Your presence, Lord Holy Spirit, You are welcome here Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for To be overcome by Your presence, Lord Your presence, Lord Your worship team invites the Holy Spirit to come to our services every time we get together. We are on our knees throughout the week and each Sunday praying that you will feel the power and presence of the Triune God. I love that our church is an EMOTIONAL church. We laugh, cry, praise, shout, sing and dance together and allow the Spirit to affect our worship. We WANT the presence of the Lord to sweep over us, change us and make us brand new. Join us in worship this September and feel this glorious power. Experience God’s mercies anew!

Blessings,

Melody Thomas Hughes Director of Music & Worship

Going After God’s MIA—Ron Hutchcraft I met Gary when we were both working with our local high school football team. He was a coach. I was the football. No, actually I was sort of an unofficial chaplain for the team. Gary was basically a happy guy, pretty laid back. Until "they" come up in the conversation. "They" are the men who were prisoners of war or missing in action in the Vietnam War. When it came to the subject of the MIA's who had not been accounted for, Gary wasn't laid back anymore. Suddenly he was really intense, really serious. See, Gary was one of a number of veterans determined to do whatever they can to make sure we do everything we can to locate or at least account for our missing soldiers. I was at a flag-raising ceremony where Gary participated in uniform. The rallying point of the veterans there was that black flag - you may have seen it. They're still around. It has the silhouette of a man's head on it, the words POW and MIA, and a stirring four-word motto, "You are not forgotten." I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Going After God's MIA's." I got to thinking about some other MIA's the other day when I got a call from a friend. He told me he'd been missing in action spiritually for a while. He said, "My wife and I got real busy, we started using Sunday as a day just to sleep late and lay low, and we haven't been to church in a long time." They used to be real ac-tive. And they're back now. I'll tell you how that all happened in just a moment. But first, our word for today from the Word of God. It's from John 10. Beginning in verse 15, Jesus says, "I lay down My life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also." So, is Jesus content just to rest with the sheep that are already in? Never! There are still sheep He laid down His life for who are still missing in action. My friend -the spiritual MIA- told me he was at a basketball game and a man from their old church came up to him, put his arm around him, and said, "Tom, we really miss you. Why don't you come back to church?" Doesn't sound like much, but that was all it took to make an MIA want to come home spiritually. I thank God for at least one man in that church who was looking out for the MIAs. Who reached out to one and said, "Man, you are not forgotten." The problem is that most of us are so busy in our personal rat race, and sometimes so comfy in our Christian cocoon, that we forget the ones who aren't home yet. But would you listen to the heart of Jesus? He's aching for those who are still out there lost. How much do the MIAs bother you? It's so easy to settle into our Christian routine, keep our busy Christian schedule, do all our Christian activities and slowly but surely forget the people Jesus died for who do not know it yet. We get numb, we get complacent, we get comfortable, forgetting that our Lord's mission was "to seek and to save those who are lost" (Luke 19:10). If we're following Him, that's where we'll be going. We can't claim to be much of a follower of Jesus if we are not passionate about the people who are lost, who are dying, those He died for, those who are away from Him. In the midst of enjoying all those who are already home, the heart of Jesus is out there with the people who aren't home. And you know some of them. You know people who are spiritually missing in action. Do you care? Would you ask the Shepherd to break your heart for them as His heart is broken? Would you get actively involved in going after them? Would you be sure that your fellow believ-ers, your ministry, your church do not forget them? Jesus has not forgotten the ones who aren't home yet. Please - don't you forget them.

Christians In The Workplace Led by Bob Green [email protected]

(will immediately follow God’s Answers to Life’s Toughest Questions)

Did you know that our work can be worship to God, as well as service to God and others? Work is something we all do, either full-time throughout our adult lives or during various phases of our lives. But the Hebrew word for "work" in the Old Testament also means "worship" and "serve." Christians in the Workplace: Equipping You to Live Out Your Faith at Work has been carefully designed to energize and equip you to follow Christ as you fulfill your job description. Each lesson offers you the opportunity to transform the way you perform your work every day. Sessions include: 1. God Calls and Equips Us to Do Our Work 2. Work as Ministry 3. Work as an Opportunity for Spiritual Growth and Maturity 4. Work as a Means to Cultivate Moral and Ethical Behaviors 5. Work as an Opportunity to Witness 6. Putting it All Together ** $10.00 Donation to cover the cost of the literature

I hope everyone had a blessed summer and ready to get started in the fall activities of the church. One activity that was a great ministry last year was Samaritan Purse Operation Christmas Child in which Lanes Chapel helped supply 292 filled Christmas shoe boxes for children in crisis both in the United States and around the world. Thank you for the help and success of this mission. We will begin filling boxes in September with items that have been donated since last year and

will continue to collect items that are needed. Empty shoe boxes, soap, & toothpaste are always needed. Please label your donations for OCC to distinguish between the Food Pantry and OCC and bring to the church office or call Jackie Smith 903-876-3415 for more info. As requested last year, if you would like to pay the $7.00 postage on any of the filled boxes rather than filling one your-self, please designate OCC in the memo of your check made out to Lanes Chapel UMC. Thanks for helping with this ex-pense. There will be two packing parties to fill boxes Tuesday, September 15 and Wednesday, September 16 both at 9:00 AM. We really appreciate your help! Come see how much fun we have and learn about the wonderful ministry! Again, if you have any questions, please call Jackie Smith, 903-876-3415.
