The New Guys
Columbia Wrestling welcomes ten new
athletes and one new coach to the roster this
season. Our large freshmen class is in the mid-
dle of an exciting, new experience as they tran-
sition from high school seniors into college
freshmen. You will get to know each freshman
more completely through this monthly news-
letter, as we will pick a few each month to
highlight.
In this month’s newsletter we will introduce to
you freshman Manny Lair, Sam Ward and our
new addition to the coaching staff Joe Nord.
Manny Lair- comes to us from a historically
tough high wrestling program out of Poway
High School. Manny is two time state place
winner in the competitive state of
California. The son of Wade and Leticia Lair,
Manny plans to begin premed classes and
eventually go onto medical school.
Sam Ward- the son of Brian and Anne
Marie Ward comes to us from Locust Valley
High School in Long Island. Sam placed in the
New York State Championships three times,
boasting a runner-up finish his senior season,
earning third place his junior year and a fifth
place finish his sophomore season.
Additionally Sam performed well Claimed
seventh place at the NHSCA Senior Nationals
in 2015 and eighth place at the NHSCA Junior
Nationals the year before. Sam plans on study-
ing economics at Columbia College.
Joe Nord will become our new volunteer
assistant coach as coach Steve Santos has been
moved up to the second assistant position. Joe
comes to us after spending two years on staff at
the University of Minnesota. He is a native of
Minnesota and wrestled for the Minnesota Go-
phers at 197 & HWT from 2006-2011.
