A U S T I N K E E NBy Jackie F. Richardson

Ten years ago, my son, Josh Richardson, decided to start competing in the Georgia Eastern Surfing Association run by Jeff and Tara Mosley. We didn’t know a soul but four teenage boys took my son under their wing and helped him to become the surfer he is today. Those guys are still best of friends. Brad Allison, Austin Keen, Benji Sanders and Ben Thompson have all remained friends since their early ESA days. All had a passion for surfing and skimboarding, and around 16 years old they obtained their own permits and organized Tybee’s first skimboarding competitions. One surfer, Austin Keen, followed his dream to California to live when he was 17 and became a professional skimboarder.

Dreams do come true because last year, Austin Keen was crowned the 2013 United Skim Tour World Champion at his home break in California. Last year to achieve this Austin traveled to Brazil, Mexico, North Carolina, Florida, Delaware and back to California.

All this might go to your head but the best thing about Austin he has still remained true to his Georgia roots. Most every June you can find him at Tybee Island skimming with the locals, teaching a skim boarding camp or playing with his baby niece. He always takes the time to give pointers to younger surfers, or to stop and thank those who helped or encouraged him in his journey.

Recently, Austin won another leg of the 2014 United Skim Tour in Delaware adding another win to his many accomplishments. Just last week he was named one of the 2014 Most Influential People in Wave Sports, among such surfing legends as Kelly Slater and Al Merrick. The quote in the article about Austin read, “Skimboarding is emerging from the ashes, and the rider from Georgia is helping the sport grow in the gnarliest shore breaks. The world champion easily transforms skimboarding into a spectator-friendly water sport.” We couldn’t be prouder.

With two wins out of three under his belt this year, Austin has a good chance of repeating his world title. If you happen to be on the North Beach at Tybee Island at the jetty in the next few weeks and you see someone doing aerials off a little skimboard you more than likely will be watching the world champion Austin Keen.

The 2014-15 season of the Tybee Island Garden Club starts on September 3rd with our first meeting where new officers will be elected and the agenda for the upcoming year will be discussed. Thanks to the Past officers... Jennifer Payne-President, Kathy Salter-Vice President , Denise Titus-Treasurer, Secretary-Joey

Burel. The Garden Club took on a new challenge 2 years ago with increasing the member roster and community projects/gardens. In that time, we added the Polk Street landscaping, spruced up/replanted the existing gardens (Seven Flags at Tybrisa, Blue Star Marker in Memorial Park, and the Guardhouse), and held a couple of highly successful fundraisers. We also contributed to sprucing up the nursing home with ferns and caladiums. We received recognition from the Garden Clubs of Georgia for the most growth in membership.

We would like to invite new members to become a part of our new year. For those on Facebook, “like” our page and invite friends as we will have this updated to tell of things happening in the Club. Meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Guardhouse/Community Center. Meetings begin at 7pm with social time and the agenda starts at 7:30pm. Possible agenda items for this year will be field trips to places such as the St. Simon’s Island Tabby and Tillandsia Garden Walk, Bamboo Gardens Holiday Lights, Middleton Gardens in Charleston, decorating the nursing home for the holidays, maintaining “existing” and growing new gardens, and much more!!!!!

We’re looking forward to a great year and invite you to become a part of our membership.

Tybee Island will host the tenth annual Tybee Pirate’s Fest on October 9 – 12, 2014. Ironically, ten years is twice as long as the reign of terror by Blackbeard, the most notorious pirate of the Golden age of Piracy.

Little is known of Blackbeard’s early life, he may have been born with the given name of Edward Teach or Edward Thatch in Britain in the late 1600’s (actual birthdate and family name unknown). He was an educated man, relative to most sailors of the late 17th / early 18th centuries and he took to the life of a sailor at an early age; historians have written that he and many of the other pirates of his time were former merchant seamen and/or naval sailors that had endured dangerous shipboard conditions and cruel treatment by captains and ship owners. The pirates may have considered their piracy on the seas, as a social revolt against the harsh treatment of captains and ship owners that had made their former lives so miserable.

With the end of the Queen Anne’s War, in the early 1700’s, the pirate captains and crews began using their naval and battle skills to capture ships flying the flags of Spain, France and other nations engaged in sea-trade. The first two decades of the 18th century are known as the Golden Age of Piracy and it’s estimated that the ranks of pirates swelled, from hundreds to thousands, with Nassau, Bahamas becoming their protected haven and re-supply port.

From Nassau the pirates could monitor the Florida Straits, a seaway with prevailing winds that Europe-bound ships would use. They could monitor the shipping, capture and rob the ships and return to their safe haven. However Blackbeard and his fellow pirates did not limit their plunder to the Caribbean. In the fall of 1717, Blackbeard looted ships in the approaches to the Chesapeake Bay, Philadelphia and New York Harbor. He captured at least fifteen vessels and soon became the most feared pirate in the Americas.

Blackbeard was also known to sail the South Georgia coast and visit a barrier island that is now known as Blackbeard Island. Rumors have persisted for the past three hundred years that he had buried some of his treasure on Blackbeard Island, but no treasure has yet to be unearthed.

In 1717, Blackbeard captured the French slaving ship La Concorde, a formidable ship of 250-tons and enough gun ports to handle 40 guns. Blackbeard released the slaves and crew, refitted the frigate as a pirate ship and renamed her “Queen Anne’s Revenge”, as homage to Queen Anne, the last Stuart monarch of Great Britain.

The Queen Anne’s Revenge may have been Blackbeard’s trophy capture, but it was also the beginning of the end of his five-year reign, as America’s most famous pirate. In the fall of 1718 after plundering the South Carolina and North Carolina coasts, the Queen Ann’s Revenge ran aground near Topsail, North Carolina. It is reported that Blackbeard settled in Bath, North Carolina, married a local woman and continued his piracy on a smaller scale along the North Carolina coastline.

However, his reign of terror and reputation had crippled commercial coastal shipping. To put an end to this disruption of trade, a group of merchants from the state of Virginia, that had suffered losses from the piracy of Blackbeard, got the attention of the Virginia Lt. Governor Alexander Spotswood. Even though Spotswood had no jurisdiction in North Carolina, he dispatched a naval frigate under the command of Lt. Robert Maynard to search out and capture Blackbeard.

Maynard found Blackbeard’s sloop anchored in Ocracoke, North Carolina and sailed in for the capture. After an exchange of cannon and musket fire resulting in many casualties and damage to Maynard’s crew and ship. Blackbeard and his men, thinking a victory for them was at hand, boarded Maynard’s sloop. Maynard and his surviving sailors emerged from the ship’s hold and overwhelmed Blackbeard and his men. Blackbeard fell dead, with five gun shot wounds and many cuts to his body. Blackbeard was decapitated, his body dumped in Pamlico Sound and his head hung from the bowsprit of Maynard’s ship.

Blackbeard worked hard to cultivate his menacing, terrifying image and while he, with his band of pirates, did loot, pillage, and sometimes burn captured ships, there are no records of eyewitness accounts (contrary to his violent reputation) except for the battle with Maynard, of him personally killing anyone.

So, to all of you would-be and wanna-be pirates enjoy the 2014 Tybee Pirate’s Fest and remember that dressing up like a menacing, terrifying pirate is just for show. So don’t get evil, wicked, mean, bad and nasty or you could end up like Blackbeard, dead in the water… figuratively speaking of course!

Flag Retirement“The American Flag represents a living country and is itself

considered a living thing.” (The Flag Code) I looked up “thing”...artifact/item.) “When the Flag is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” (The Flag Code)

When on Tybee Island last winter I went to a garage sale and immediately was drawn to the above American Flag which was placed high on a shelf. Right away I counted the stars...50; then the young woman who was having the sale came to me and said, “We are moving and I hesitated to put this Flag out with my other things as it belonged to my stepfather. I have been told that it should be burned but could not bring myself to let that happen. I told her I thought perhaps I could repair it - so she handed it to me - making sure it did not touch the floor as we folded it - when I asked her what the cost would be - she said, “my gift to you”. When I returned to Beachside Colony where we were staying, I hung it in the hallway on a hanger - again being sure it did not touch the floor. After about three weeks I finally decided it was beyond repair and did some research on how it could be retired other than via burning. You could fold it and keep it in a special box on a shelf in your home; you could put it in a wooden box and bury it if it was cotton as it would eventually disintegrate. This Flag was cotton, and I thought I could bury it on my brother’s farm when I returned to Minnesota - if that would be the “retirement of choice” by the young woman who had given it to me. I went back to her home - knocked on her door - wanting to ask the her what she would like me to do. She had already moved and the house had been sold. However, the interior designer who was painting told me she knew the realtor who had sold the house and gave me her number. I called and left a message two times - asking the realtor to please give the young woman my phone number and ask her to call me re “the Flag”. I received no return calls. Before we left for Minnesota I folded the Flag, put it in my bicycle basket and rode to the local American Legion. The lady above took my Flag, and assured me that the burning ceremony would be done in a dignified manner as she, too, agreed that this Flag “had served its purpose”. I also felt this special Flag should be “retired” on Tybee - its original home; not taken back to Minnesota. When I took this picture I just wanted the Flag to rest on something so you could see that it truly had “served its purpose”...not until the picture was developed did I study the words on the plaque....which had been placed at the American Legion by the DAR. That even made this flag more special to me. When I returned home I shared this story with my fellow DAR daughters of the Red Cedar Chapter, Austin, MN. —Sharon Jensen, Faribault, MN

Onward to 1914 and Council’s first meeting held on January 16. It was unusual to meet in the winter – must be something important – like Tybee Town suing the Federal Government!

“On motion of Councilman Stillwell, seconded by Councilman Palmer the following resolution was unanimously adopted –

“Whereas, the Town of Tybee claims an easement in and title to certain parts of certain streets in said Town, and the lanes adjacent thereto – laying North of Tilton Street [sic - should be Tilton Avenue] in said Town and extending over and through what is known as the Furber Tract in said Town and said streets being known as Main Street, First Ave [aka Hwy 80], Second Ave, Third Ave [now Jones Ave] and Fourth Ave [now Miller Ave] –

“And whereas the United States Government has entered upon and taken possession of the parts of said streets and lanes extending through said Tilton [sic - he meant Furber] Tract and laying north of Tilton Streets [Avenue] –

“And whereas the said United States Government refuses to make restitution of said streets and lanes as to compensate said town therefor –

“Therefore be it Resolved by the Mayor and Councilmen of the Town of Tybee in meeting assembled –

“First – That the said Mayor and Councilmen be and hereby are authorized to retain council for the said Town of Tybee to recover possession of said streets and lanes or to secure compensation therefor –

“Second - That the said Mayor and Councilmen are hereby authorized to enter into a contract on behalf with the said Town of Tybee with such counsel as they may retain to institute proceedings for the recovery of said streets and lanes or for the payment of a reasonable price therefor, the said counsel so retained to receive in full compensation for their services a sum of forty (40%) percent [sic] of the amount recovered for said streets and lanes, it being distinctly understood, however, that in case of no recovery is had, that there shall be no liability on said corporation or its officers for any fee whatsoever for the services so rendered.”

Did you notice the number of mistakes in the above? I think it’s due to Clerk of Council, Frank Storer’s, age and condition. He will die a few months after he wrote the above minutes.

For you readers who are memory-challenged, yours truly included, here’s a repeat of what I wrote in last January’s Breeze on Tilton Avenue:

[Tilton Avenue ran from 6th Avenue to a northerly extension of Main Street (now Butler Avenue). Before the railroad came in 1887, it was part of the tramway coming from the wharf on the South Channel. The tramway was used to shuttle people and supplies coming by ships from Savannah to Tybee. When the railroad came, a portion of Tilton Avenue and the cottages along it fronted on the railroad as it approached the “Big Bend” aka Kuhlman’s Corner. Next came Fort Screven which completed the demise of Tilton Avenue. Today there is no sign of it. Of course not, the Feds stole it from Tybee Town a century ago, which I consider to be not nice!]

The original location of Tilton Avenue crossed the north end of 2nd Avenue just south of the stone markers for entering Fort Screven. This tells me that Tybee Town won its suit against the feds and kept the Tilton Avenue right of way as Town land. When I find out how the suit was settled, I’ll let you know since I know how important it is to you!!!

Bernie and I became engaged just before Christmas on the one-year anniversary of our first date. We decided not to set a date or rush into anything. As time went by we wondered -- now that we’re engaged, why wait? Well, we couldn’t decide when to set the date. Bernie thought sometime in April. I took a trip to Pittsburgh in February and decided while there to put a date on the table when I got back. My daughter who lives in Pittsburgh was planning a trip to Columbia to visit her sister and nieces for a week in the beginning of March. I thought that was an opportunity to have at least two of my three daughters at our wedding.

On my return I suggested we marry on the 5th of March. Bernie thought that was a bit soon, but began to warm to the idea and started to see if he could bring it all together in such a short time. Of course that is what he does best, and forthwith things started to gel. Bernie talked to his priest, Father Costigan, selected the church, contacted all 5 of his sons, etc.

I talked to my daughters and all three could attend. Unfortunately my son couldn’t, so we had eight out of nine children that could. Things started to roll. We called the church, the “Smallest Church in America” located on US 17 an hour south of Tybee, to make sure it was available on March 5th at 2 p.m. Father Costigan could officiate, arrangements were made with Georges’ Restaurant for a reception,

license in hand, even our two 4-year old granddaughters could and would be ring bearers, and my 10-year old grandson could play the “wedding march,” or at least 10 bars of it, on his guitar. Things came together.

On the day of our wedding, my daughters had stayed at my home. Two of Bernie’s sons live on Tybee, two from North Carolina had stayed at his home, and the fifth was driving from Orlando with his family to meet us at the church. Time was drawing near and Bernie picked me up in his van with two of his sons and a daughter-in-law. One of my daughters rode with us to the church. Bernie and I sat in the very back of the van, and were laughing, hugging, and squeezing each other’s hands all the way down to the church. About 5 minutes before we got there, my cell phone rang. It was his daughter-in-law Kristy driving up from Orlando. They were unable to locate the church. We gave them directions and continued happily south on 95. A few minutes later she calls again saying they found the church, but unfortunately there were two squad cars there with lights flashing, and that Father Costigan had been arrested for drunken driving. We laughed and said she would have to come up with something more believable for us to become disturbed. She said, “okay, but be prepared with enough money to get him out of trouble.” We were just about there by that time, and laughed about her attempted ploy.

We pulled into the church parking lot a few minutes later and sure enough there were two police cars, one state, one county, with blue lights blazing and Father Costigan leaning over one of them with his head resting on his arms. My heart sank. Kristy walked over to me and excitedly tried to calm me down by saying, “don’t worry we talked to the state trooper and he said Father Costigan was sober enough to perform the ceremony, but would be taken away immediately afterwards. I was stunned. Bernie, the groom-to-be and parishioner of Father Costigan, handed me his camera to take pictures of the situation. After all, he couldn’t -- it was his priest. I did as I was told, and it helped to keep me busy and not think about my wedding day either being ruined or hilariously funny.

The minutes ticked away and it was soon 2 o’clock, our designated time to marry. Father Costigan nonchalantly walked over to Bernie and me and said in his very pleasant Irish brogue, “Well are you two ready to be married?” Dumbfoundedly I replied, “are you sober enough?” He said, “What do you mean”? I told him the story my soon to be daughter-in-law Kristy had told me, and he laughed and said her name was going into his black book forever. I said, “you mean you’re not drunk?” He explained to us that he pulled into the church parking lot to find two policemen with their lights flashing that had just stopped a drunken driver. The irony of it was that the driver had been a parishioner of his from a church at which he was the pastor in Augusta, Georgia. That explained why he was leaning over the squad car -- he was talking to the man that had been arrested. I confronted Kristy with unbelievable admiration for her having pulled this ploy off. She said, “Will you ever forgive me?” My reply was, “I owe you big time.”

Twenty of us crammed into “the Smallest Church in America” which officially seats twelve. Father Costigan said to the packed church, “We are here to join these two in holy Matrimony -- if I’m sober enough.” Everyone laughed. We had a beautiful ceremony.

If all that wasn’t enough, when we came out of the church, as Mr. and Mrs. Goode, there was a wrecking truck there to remove the vehicle the man was driving. On the side of the truck in bold letters read, “Simmons Wrecker Service.” Simmons was my name before I walked down the aisle a few minutes earlier. We hope that was not a sign!

A few updates:1. We have been happily married for almost 10 years,2. Father Costigan is now Monsignor Costigan at St. Peter’s Church, and3. The “Simmons Wrecker Service” truck did not jinx nor wreck the marriage.

On Saturday, June 7th, 40 children participated in the 28th annual Chimney Creek Marina/The Crab Shack, Tybee Marine Rescue Squadron and City of Tybee Children’s Fishing Tournament.

Every child is a winner at this annual event. Just for signing up, the children got a free T-Shirt and ditty bag full of goodies! After all that, savings bonds and trophies were given out to the top winner in each category. Then

the J.P. Owens Memorial Award and Tony Petrea Award were given out for the best fishing stories of the day. This year we gave away a 4 hour inshore fishing trip to a lucky family. This will be an annual prize remembering our friend Jack Ward. Now we can eat free Roger Wood Chucky dogs, cooked to order, with drinks and chips for everyone.

This event was started in 1986 by Belinda Flanigan over at Chimney Creek in conjunction with national fishing week. The theme has always been, get hooked on fishing not drugs! Belinda says she remembers about 32 kids fishing that first year. “We spoil those kids rotten”. That has grown to as many as 196, thirteen years ago, with an average of about 150 children participating each year. Let’s see, 150 x 28 years…..that’s a lot of special moments in a lot of children’s lives made possible by some good Tybee folks. Thanks to Jack and Belinda Flanigan for hosting this world class event at The Crab Shack and to all the local Tybee businesses for their support. The Shack Crew did a great job as usual. Tybee MRS, thanks guys and gals, you all did a wonderful job again! I’ll see ya in the river, —Captain Stan

Add wine and bring to boil, reduce to simmer until reduced by 2/3 about 5 mins. Hello Everyone,We hope you are having an enjoyable spring with good weather. Since our

last newsletter, we have made stops in Vidalia, LA/Natchez, MS; Vicksburg, MS; Hollandale, MS, and Delhi, MS. Tomorrow we head to Shreveport, LA, then its north to Michigan. Much of what we have seen includes farm land with corn, soybeans, rice, and wheat all healthy and growing in vast fields. It seems that much if this land is owned by giant agricultural companies such as Con Agra given the few farm houses and grazing animals that we observed, as opposed to local family farms.

I think our favorite stop in this segment was Vidalia/Natchez. These cities are on opposite sides of the Mississippi River with a bridge separating them. We stayed at a campground in Vidalia and were parked facing the river with an excellent view of the barge traffic. Vidalia doesn’t offer much but does have a fine park on the river that includes a three mile walkway under the bridge and plenty of places to relax and watch the river traffic. Natchez is an old city with homes dating from the early 1800s, which we took in on a leisurely drive. One of the older churches has a collection called Natchez in Historic Photographs. It was the work of three photographers and the more than 500 photographs cover the period roughly from the Civil War to WW II. Most are captioned and many identify the specific people in the photos. It had to have been a mammoth effort in research and organization to put this excellent gallery together.

There are a number of historic Indian mounds in the surrounding states and one of the most important was the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians in Natchez. This 128 acre site dates from about 700 AD to the mid- 1500s. They primarily were farmers but also hunted local game. The village was where the high ranking Indians lived with the rest scattered across a wide area. They gathered at the village mounds for important ceremonies.

The Natchez Trace Parkway is a national road that runs from Natchez to Nashville. We drove about 40 miles into the Trace and made three interesting stops. The first was to see the Emerald Mound, which is the second largest Mississippian Period ceremonial mound in the country. Mounds were built for burials; to support important religious, ceremonial, or leader structures; or as a sign of local wealth. Many were built BC. As more of the people were buried or as structures disappeared (due to fire, age, etc) the mounds were built higher to cover the remains and accommodate newer structures or burials. Artifacts tell us a lot of the history, but there is much that archeologists don’t know. It is interesting to visit these sites and museums to discover the history there. Emerald Mound covers eight acres and was built and used between 1200 and 1730. It is 35 feet high and measures 435 x 700 feet at its base. Two secondary mounds were built at the top, bringing the total height to about 60 feet. Visualize people carrying a gallon or so of dirt each at a time to build these structures and you begin to see how much effort and time it took.

The second site we visited was the Mount Locust Inn and Plantation. Mount Locust was built in 1779 and is the last of 55 inns on the Natchez Trace that still stands. It was a 150 acre farm with 51 slaves. The main house has three bedrooms plus family dining and store rooms. The kitchen was out back as were the bunkhouses. Travelers paid 25 cents a night for a room and food. People walking the Trace traveled 10 to 15 miles each day and stayed at similar inns. People traveling down the Mississippi River also stayed at Inns. When they reached their destinations, they dismantled their boats, sold the wood,

and walked the Trace back home. The last site we saw was the location of the first women’s college in MS. There wasn’t much left to see and there wasn’t much information at the site, but it’s nice to know that women’s colleges were built as early as the mid 1800s.

At Vicksburg we stayed at the Ameristar Casino RV campground. Jan played blackjack at the casino and left with a tidy profit. One of the sites we visited was the Museum of Coca Cola History and Memorabilia. It was a small museum that included original artifacts and historical information. A soda fountain offered Coke, floats, and other Coke related items. The Lower MS River Museum provided information on the river and includes what was a working towboat that operated from the early 1960s to 1993. Unfortunately, all but the main level was roped off, which detracted from what might have been an interesting exploration. The Old Court House, which is across the street from the New Court House, was interesting with several rooms dedicated to clothing, tools toys, and artifacts in addition to the courtroom.

The Leroy Pearcy State Park in Hollandale was a place we where will never again stay. It has a small RV park and we had one of only two sites with a sewer hookup. The water had a gray film that made it look dirty. We had to clean our RV shower every day, clothes came out dingy in the wash, and both of our RV water filters were clogged four days into our stay. Fortunately, we carry spares with us. I think the water quality was the same throughout the immediate area. This is one of the poorest areas in MS, with people living in shanties and predatory lending and check cashing companies all over the place.

I was able to get a slot on one of the Nissan factory tours in Canton, about two hours from the campground. This factory builds five vehicles, primarily the Altima, Frontier, and several SUVs. After viewing a movie, we boarded a tram for a one hour trip inside the factory. It was very interesting to see how the metal

is stamped and then welded with robots and the different sections where the dashboards, tires, seats, and other items are installed. As with many factories, they use a Just In Time construction method where the tires, seats, etc for specific vehicles are delivered in precise order for installation. The factory includes a cafeteria, bank, and medical facility. Some of their subcontractors have facilities within the factory walls. Everything is designed so they can move internal structures, robots, etc around to restructure the facility as needed for changing requirements (they were doing this for a new product line as we were touring). Sorry, they didn’t allow photos.

We drove to Greenville, the nearest large town, to shop and see some of the local museums. The 1927 flood devastated a wide area, impacting the lives of several hundred thousand people and farms and changed flood risk management throughout the country. We stopped by the 1927 Flood Museum looking forward to learning more of the history, but for whatever reason it was closed. We next drove to the county historical museum, which also inexplicably was closed. We did see the Winterville Mounds Archeological Park and the very interesting Highway 61 Blues Museum. In the heyday of the blues over 150 great bluesmen lived within 150 miles of Leland, where the museum is housed. It gives the history of the Delta Blues and the musicians who made it famous. We weren’t familiar with most of these bluesmen and were very interested in this history. One famous musician, James “Son” Thomas dropped by and played a few tunes while we were there. It was phenomenal.

We currently are staying at the Poverty Point Campground adjacent to a manmade reservoir. It’s a nice campground and is in black bear country.

Their rental cabins are on stilts in the water, which is pretty cool. Visitors can fish from their back deck. We visited the Poverty Point State Historic Site to see mounds dating between 1700 and 700 BC, which were quite interesting. We also drove to Greenwood to see the MS Cotton Museum. The buildings also were closed and we surmise that cutbacks in the state (MS) are the reason so many sites are closed during the week. Greenwood is said to be the poorest town in the country. We noticed that MS also has cut way back on their roadside rest stop locations. Other than that, we have just relaxed and enjoyed the fine weather.

Take care, everyone. Until next time, Steve and Jan

26 No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

Excerpt from Larry Peterson’sLast Days of the Coastal Empire

As the mornings grew colder, Mike bicycled more and surfed less. More often than not, he cruised down Campbell Avenue, past the A-frame and multi-colored artists’ cottage, freshly replanted flower boxes, barking dogs and Confederate flags. He checked his box at the post office and zigzagged along the shaded, narrow streets west of Butler Avenue, gazing at the quaint bungalows. His favorite was painted bright blue and had a white picket fence and flowers in pots and beds. Then he two-wheeled it to the foot of the pier and walked his bike to the end. If he were pressed for time, he sprinted north on Butler and blinked as the hard, cold wind brought tears to his eyes. He leaned hard into the curve at Anchor Bend. Then he hung a right at the Sugar Shack, gathered another burst of speed and coasted most of the way home.

In the past couple of weeks, he’d tried something different, climbing the 178 steps of the old light house. If you allowed for shortcuts through vacant lots, the tower was two blocks from Mike’s house. After his third or fourth visit, volunteers stopped asking for money or his Tybee Historical Society membership card. Instead, they just slapped the mandatory band on his wrist.

Before he began his climb, he often found and gently stroked both of the resident cats that basked in the sun on the porch of the keeper’s cottage. Big red signs warned visitors not to touch them because they bit. Mike figured they probably did. But the most likely victims were the hordes of little kids who grabbed tails. Anyway, they never bit Mike.

He huffed and puffed as he ascended the staircase. His feet clanked on the cast iron stairs. On most days, he heard the boisterous voices of other climbers above and below. Sometimes he studied the patterns where white paint had worn and chipped off the curved red-brick walls.

Mike usually paused at a couple of the six landings to stretch his rubbery leg muscles. As the incline steepened and the staircase narrowed on the final flight of steps, he used the metal rail to pull himself up.

The door at the top opened with a loud creak and closed with a reverberating slam. It led to a circular walkway guarded by a waist-high railing. Just outside the door, Mike could see million-dollar houses interspersed with the mostly restored barracks and other structures of old Fort Screven and dark, dense stands of oak. Hidden somewhere in the trees, someone had told him, were Sandra Bullock’s digs. Not far away was a big water tower. More distant were the brown, squat expanses of Fort Pulaski, which – as Civil War buffs knew – had been an early victim of the Yankees’ rifled cannon.

A little farther west lay the Bull River condominiums. Almost on the horizon were the pale blue liquefied natural gas tanks on Elba Island, the suspension links of the Talmadge Bridge, and the smoke stacks of the paper mills.

As Mike gazed north, he saw the Savannah River. To the south, the Back River gleamed just below the distant sky.

To absorb the vistas to the east, Mike sat on the hard, cold ledge just outside the tower’s recessed window. He took it all in: the bunkers and empty gun placements of old Fort Screven, the lines of breakers wrapping around the river jetty, and his own house, nestled in a clump of trees. And, of course, the ocean itself.
