The past several months have been monumental for manufacturing in the State of Alabama. Both opportunities and obstacles have been at our doorstep, but Manufacture Alabama has responded wholeheartedly with effor ts to keep manufacturing as the number one business sector in our state.

As you should be well-aware, key issues and accomplishments this year have been the:

PSC Races For two years now, so-called “environmentalists” have been trying to wreak havoc on our state’s jobs and economic development by shrinking and mandating our energy options and raising energy prices. Funded with millions of out-of-state dollars, local “environmentalists” were tasked with inserting themselves in the 2014 Public Service Commission (PSC) races, with two of the three PSC seats up for election. Extremists sought to fill these seats with candidates who would support these “environmentalists” and their job-killing agenda.

Affordable and reliable energy is critical to manufacturing. With that in mind, MA naturally submerged itself in these races, pushing our members and the general public to vote for Jeremy Oden and Chip Beeker, both candidates who will fight for manufacturing and our energy options.

After months of grassroots effor ts, we saw the desired outcome. Due to a lack of Democratic opposition in both PSC races, in the Republican Primary, Jeremy Oden was elected to Place 1 on the Commission, and following the Republican Runoff, Chip Beeker took Place 2 on the Commission. Again, we’d like to thank each and every one of you who went out and voted and those of you who spread the word about voting to your family, friends and employees. We told you that manufacturers would determine this election, and you did.

EPA AttacksCarbon Emissions Standards But please know that despite our victories at the state level, the war is far from over, as evidenced with the EPA’s June 2 carbon emissions proposal. The EPA’s proposed rule, or “Clean Power Plan,” that requires CO2 emissions reductions from existing U.S. power plants will provide minuscule improvements for the environment, yet vastly damaging consequences for our country and state’s economy.

If this proposal is executed, energy prices will skyrocket and thousands of Alabama jobs will be lost. Manufacturing companies will be able to weather the effects, but their employees will not.

This was the message I shared at the EPA’s public hearing in Atlanta on July 30. As part of the 120-day public comment period for the carbon emissions proposal, this hearing allowed me the opportunity to remind the EPA of how their extreme actions will affect our jobs and our employees. To view my complete four-minute testimony, click on the video below or click here.

Mercury and Toxic Standards For example, take into consideration the recent changes in Alabama Power Company’s energy unit structure. EPA’s 2011 Mercury and Toxic Standards rule forced the company to alter the generating capacity of seven of its coal-fired units and replace them with natural gas units. Sixty employees were laid off, as a result.

Also concerning with these conversions is the emphasis on natural gas. Historically, the price of natural gas has been volatile in comparison to coal, hydro and nuclear. Placing governmental mandates—which are being pushed by the EPA—on the use of natural gas to generate electricity will only add to the volatility of natural gas prices.

In addition, Environmental Extremists in our country are pushing to put an end to fracking, the process in which we obtain natural gas. Again, if the EPA continues to narrow the options in our country’s energy mix, the remaining energy sources will naturally soar in price. And if the EPA’s carbon emissions standards are executed, not seven but all of Alabama Power’s coal units will be affected.

(Video) MA President George Clark tells EPA that carbon emissions standards will put thousands of employees out of work.

President’s MessageCONTINUED from Page 03

Alabama Workforce Council Despite the negativity at the federal level, we are seeing game-changing effor ts for workforce development in our state. Governor Robert Bentley recently announced his creation of the Alabama Workforce Council (AWC), a council consisting of an appointed group of Alabama business and industry managers. Council members are serving as an advisory body to the Governor, the Chancellor of the Alabama Community College System and the Superintendent of the Alabama Department of Education in formulating policies, developing innovative educational workforce programming and discussing issues critical to the workforce development needs of the State of Alabama.

Even better, we have seven Manufacture Alabama members, along with myself, serving on this council. For a council made up of 29 members, MA is more than well represented. For the complete list of members, click here.

But we must remember that this Council would not have been possible without the advisement of our Board of Directors, who met with Governor Bentley in December 2012 and recommended the creation of a task force that would tackle Alabama’s workforce development needs. As a result, Governor Bentley created his College & Career Ready Task Force, whose members released several key recommendations in December 2013—one being the AWC’s creation.

MA will be providing monthly AWC email updates to allow members to follow and stay informed on the Council’s progress, so stay on the lookout for more AWC information.

Close to 30 members of the AWC gather at the Council’s second meeting, held Thursday, Aug. 21, to receive subcommittee appointments and receive updates on education from Chancellor Mark Heinrich and Superintendent Tommy Bice.

NewsMA Welcomes New Director of External Affairs

Molly CagleDirector of External Affairs How many members of the Alabama State Legislature can you name? Better yet, how many do you know on a personal basis? Manufacture Alabama’s newest team member and Director of External Affairs, Molly Cagle, has worked with all of our legislators in some capacity. Molly’s four years of experience from working with Senate President Pro Tempore Del Marsh brings the quality and resources MA members have grown to expect in developing strong relationships with the Alabama Legislature.

Alongside MA President George Clark, Molly will be traveling and visiting with MA members to determine what our manufacturers require in a strong workforce. Additionally, she will be assisting George and MA in their lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill, along with implementing and executing MA’s various proactive initiatives. Molly will oversee and serve as a chief component to BIPAC in the progression of the Alabama Prosperity Project, and she will serve as a staff resource to our councils and committees and as a resource to our president on workforce development and membership.

Away from the office, you will find Molly with husband Patrick at the lake or beach or find her spending time with her nieces. She received her bachelor’s in political science, with a minor in broadcast journalism, from Troy University. Molly brings with her a vast range of knowledge and energy to the table for MA members.

To get in touch with Molly, email her at [email protected] or call 334.386.3000.

EventsMA Invites Members to Introduce Manufacturing to Students

What: The 2014 Joint Leadership Development Conference (JLDC) is a workforce development and leadership development effort that will bring together 8,000 top high school students from across the state to learn about the career paths available to them in more than 100 state and national industries. In existence for 13 years now, this partnership between the Alabama State Department of Education and business and industry is a top-notch conference in which Manufacture Alabama has played a significant role for the past four years.

Who: We would like to ask that you, as an MA member, sign up to exhibit at this year’s JLDC and showcase your company plant and sector. There is NO fee to exhibit. It is MA’s goal to have at least one manufacturer from every industry sector to exhibit at this conference. If you are interested in exhibiting, please contact our office at 334.386.3000 immediately. A September 1 deadline for submitting exhibitor information has already passed.

Where/When: The 2014 JLDC will be held at the BJCC in Downtown Birmingham from Nov. 17-18, but exhibitors will need to be present Nov. 17-18. Exhibitor registration closes Nov. 3.

Why: JLDC presents us with a prime opportunity to interact one-on-one with students who will soon be entering the workforce. Through JLDC, students can go directly to the manufacturing experts—us. You have the opportunity to address their misconceptions and their questions and share with them the many opportunities that manufacturing has to offer them. Again, there is NO fee to exhibit. To learn more about this year’s JLDC, visit www.alabamajldc.org/. To see pictures from last year’s conference, click here.

How: MA will be by your side throughout the entire exhibiting process. We will be around to assist with any of your questions or needs and will help you register and even set up, if desired. Workforce development is a team effort, so understand that you will not be alone in your work at this conference. You will be surrounded by the MA staff and fellow members. To get the process started or for any questions, contact Molly Cagle at [email protected] or call the office at 334.386.3000.

(Top): More than 4,500 high school students attend 2013 JLDC.(Bottom): Students interact with Nucor Steel (left) and RockTenn (right) employees and learn about careers in their respective manufacturing sectors.
