Ulysses Club of New Zealand Rotorua Branch Rotorua Ramblings…… SEPTEMBER 2014 issue 16 Great to have warm and sunny days after the recent cold spell some days ago. The weather had some serious impact on our rides this month and most of us did not manage to go out on rides planned by Mal. Yet things are looking up and I am keen to participate on the rides in the coming month. Although our rides have been limited, it has been wonder- ful to see our weekly Saturday mornings meet at the Lake- front Cafe so well attended. And last Saturday we made a presentation to the owners Colin and Norma with a Certificate of our Appreciation for their hospitality and sup- port to our Club. Next month I will be attending the Annual Coordinators Meeting in Wellington on the weekend 10-12th and will report back any important and interesting discussions and/ or decisions from that meeting. I hope you enjoyed Stuart and Andreas story on their Route 66 adventure. Their full story is on Andrea’s Blog: http://pixieon2wheels.wordpress.com Jim Bolton and Bob McKenzie are the next members of our Branch to head overseas, with Dr Michael Pinfold and Jean-Phillip Jacquet, on a 15 day motorbike tour with Eagle Riders on the “Western Highlights 2 Tour” in June 2015. I had a game of 10-Pin Bowling the other night. I was the lowest points scorer in my team with 27 points. The winner scored 127 points. How em- barrassing it was. The best part was the Chinese meal afterwards! Cheers, Tony B. #2436

Two wet Saturdays, 13th and 20th September, and what do I see as I drive past the Lakefront Café – only 1 and 2 bikes respectively on the forecourt. A little bit of wet shouldn’t put you all off a cuppa java! Or did all you soft-ies drive there in your elegant tin tops? I see that the Minutes of the last meeting were emailed to members the same day as the overdue Branch magazine – both had the club name spelt incorrectly, each made a different mistake! My Branch member mates spend quite some time reading the National Magazine from cover to cover to find out what is going on around the country. They read it 2 or 3 times this last issue – looking for their own Rotorua Branch report. Come on you guys – show off the Branch to everyone else! Speaking of the National Magazine, this month is the 14th Anniversary of the name change to “The Ulyssian”. The September 2000 issue was the last one called the “Ulysses Club NatMag”. There was also no mention of the upcoming Okataina Rally. I guess your Branch is having a rally next June? I hear it may be the last at Okataina, so you should be making it a fantastic send off for that venue! And remember, you’re only one ride away from a good mood! Why was Jack B. given a bedroom wall clock? Watch this space, I will get my spies to find out! I hear the Branch has finally recognised Norma and Colin of the Lakefront Café for their unflagging support. Long may this reciprocal arrangement continue! Go to bed early on the day of our Sunday meeting – not only is there a rugby test to watch, but you oldies will lose an hour of sleep because of the switch to daylight saving. Daylight saving means the Rotorua Branch midweek rides to a meal destination will soon begin.

Saturday 20th September, Coordinator Peter and Jack Butterworth presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Colin and Norma for the

hospitality shown to our Branch over the years.

Hi NZ Ulyssians, I'm a 66 year old Expat Kiwi motorcyclist living in South Australia, I have been diagnosed with Parkinsons 4 years ago and I'm planning a ride around NZ to raise awareness and money for Parkinsons NZ. I have just completed a solo ride 1 1/2 times around Australia for Parkinson's SA, travelling 22,500km's approx., raising $32,000 and still rising. The plan is to talk to Parkinson's suffers and supporters, motorcycle clubs and service clubs about the ride in Oz and the illness and how it affects my life. I'm hoping that you may be able to pass this email on to all your Branches throughout NZ. I only ride bikes, do not own a car, and I've been a Ulysses member since turning 50. The ride will begin in, travel around the North Island, then over to the Mainland, finishing by the end of March. More info about the ride in Oz can be found if you Goggle “John Stockwell Shifting Gears” and I am on Facebook, “John Stockwell/370” should find me. I hope to hear from you in the near future. Kindest regards, John Stockwell (Takka) Email: [email protected]

Sorry for the quality of this page as it has been scanned from a page of the

September 2000 “Ulysses Club Natmag” as it was called in those days.

It was from this date—September 2000—that the name of our National

Magazine was called the “Ulyssian”

It has been suggested that members remove this back page from your

Newsletter and have it laminated for future use.
