Now it is time toregister for PAF's Fall Seminar on Octo-ber 25, 2014, at the Cocoa Beach Hilton.Don't forget to attend the Welcome Re-ceptionon Friday evening, October 24that 6:00 pm at the hotel. A fun evening hasbeen planned. The Welcome Reception isfree for attendees. There will be light horsd'oeuvres served and a free drink out onthe beautiful new deck at the hotel by the

    beach. You will not want to miss thisevent.

    Please look at the seminar agenda in-

    cluded in this newsletter to see the speak-

    ers and presentations. There are many

    great topics so there should be something

    interesting for everyone to enjoy. This is a

    great opportunity to get CLE credits min-

    utes from home and in a beautiful ocean

    setting.

    We are still going to need timekeepersfor the speakers during their presenta-tions. If you are interested in helping outplease contact me.

    On another note, I would like to thankthose who donated food and money forThe Children's Hunger Project at the last

    meeting. We will be collecting donationsat the next three meetings. The list ofitems requested is included in this issue ofthe newsletter. Note: If you donate a 4pack of Musselmans Big Cup Applesauceor a 6 pack of Mussellmans Original size

    applesauce, I have a coupon for a FREEgame of bowling.

    Also don't forget to register for The Pre-cious Mammaries 5K walk/run on Octo-ber 4th. Your registration fee is donatedto Cancer Care Centers Foundation ofBrevard. It also includes a pancake break-fast after the race. Register using theteam name "Brevard Paralegal Associa-tion". A registration form is in this issue ofthe newsletter.     Lastly, thank you to all who donated itemsfor the garage sale fundraiser for the Bre-vard Schools Foundation. Also thank youto those who attended the garage sale tohelp. The Brevard Schools Foundationwas grateful for our donation. The left-over items from the garage sale were do-nated to the Friends of the Animals Sanc-tuary Thrift Store. We will be participat-ing in the garage sale again this spring andwe will be seeking donations for that ga-rage sale soon.

    I hope you can attend "our" Fall Seminarand look forward to seeing many BPAMembers there. I'm sure we'll be proud.

    Paralegals from Across the U.S. Gather in Charleston, South

    Carolina for NALAs 39th Annual Convention.

    In late July, paralegals from 45 states gathered in Charleston, SouthCarolina for 3 days of networking and continuing legal education. Agreat meeting in a great location! This years program featured six in-

    stitutes providing in depth education in corporate law, discovery, elderlaw, intellectual property and trial practice. In addition, attorney Vir-ginia Koerselman-Newman presented the Essential Skills Institute, aprogram designed for those preparing for the Certified Paralegal ex-amination.

    2014 NALA Affiliate Awards

    It is an honor to report that the President of the Paralegal Associationof Florida, Inc., Patricia DeRamus, ACP, FRP, won the 2014 AffiliateAward.

    Pat DeRamus has been an active member of PAF for nearly 20 years.She has served the organization in numerous leadership positions in-cluding President, Vice President, and NALA Liaison. She has alsoserved as a CP Exam proctor. Her contributions to paralegal educa-tion are significant. She is a member of the Advisory Council of Palm

    Beach State College and has spoken on paralegalism and paralegals andnetworking to classes at Palm Beach State College and Florida AtlanticUniversity. Her articles have appeared in Facts & Findings and she hasserved as a member of the Professional Development Committee ofNALA. She is a member of the Palm Beach County Bar Associationand has served on the Professionalism Committee and co-chair of theOutreach Sub-Committee for the Palm Beach County Bar Association.

    Many of you had the opportunityto meet Pat when she attendedour Chapter meeting late last

    year.

    The Board of Directors met on Monday, August 25, 2014 and approved

    the budget for the new fiscal year. The speaker schedule was finalizedthrough March of next year and the Board reviewed the fiscal audit sub-mitted to PAF. Tracy King went over the plans for the Chapters par-ticipation in the Mammaries 5K on Saturday, October 4, 2014. ChapterMembers will be encouraged to wear BPA polo t-shirts that will be soldby the Chapter at membership meetings. The same t-shirts will beworn by the PAF Conference Committee at the conference.

    The Board voted to raffle off two free registrations to the PAF Confer-ence sine we are hosting this year. The raffle will occur at the Septem-ber meeting.

    Immediately following the Board Meeting, the PAF Conference Commit-tee held their monthly meeting

    PAF Conference Committee Report The availability of an Early Bird registration was very successful.

    45 registrations were received during this period. A sponsorship package for the reception only was reviewed and

    approved. The package was distributed to all BPA members in or-der to secure sufficient sponsorship to cover the costs of the recep-tion.

    The Committee approved the polo t-shirts to be ordered fromLogo Lodge a local vendor. The price for the shirts is $20.00. Katiewill have a photo of the shirt, sizing, and sign up sheet for the shirtsat the next membership meeting. For those folks who signed upearlier from another vendor, those orders will be honored by thenew vendor and BPA.

    Assignments for volunteers to introduce speakers and be timekeep-ers is being developed now by Tracy King.

    The publicity sub-committee is preparing a mail out to all firms inBrevard County in order to distribute the conference registrationbrochure to paralegals/legal assistants who are not members of PAF.

    Anne Cope contacted the Central Florida Paralegal Association andthey distributed the registration brochure to all of their members.(This organization does not belong to PAF)

    Eileen Hillmann will be including information on the conference inregular announcements about our monthly Chapter meetings.

    BPA will have an exhibit table at the conference as host Chapter anda table at the reception to promote our Chapter.

    Nicole Dooley is working on a promotional handout of things to doin Brevard for people attending the conference.

    I grew up in Upstate NY and moved to FL in 2005. I attended UCF and

    graduated in 2007 with a BA in Communications. I worked in thebanking industry and happened to fall into Defense Litigation randomlywhen I was trying to relocate from Orlando back to Melbourne. It wasthe best decision ever! I am getting married in December so planningthe wedding is taking up a lot of time! I love to go to Zumba classesand to do arts and crafts. I enjoy spending time with my fianc, par-ents/in laws and my brother and his family. We spend a lot of time atUniversal as well.

    Welcome Back BPA/EFSC Students!!

    My name is Erin Knott and I am fortunate enough to be the new Stu-dent Liaison. As August is coming to an end, the 2014-2015 schoolyear is beginning. I am taking one online course and four classes on

    campus, so you should be able to find me throughout this semester.

    This semester looks to be an exciting one! I look forward to seeing oldand new faces, as more students plan to enroll as student members of

    the BPA. There are a lot of interesting topics covered at each monthlymeeting that seems to help further our classroom experience.

    I would be remiss if I taken a few moments to thank manyBPA Members who have worked so hard in the last few

    months to help ensure that the work of the BPA Chapter inthe community, with our members, the Brevard County le-gal community and Paralegal Association of Florida, Inc. ismoving forward in such a positive manner.

    Tracy King for doing such a wonderful job of securingspeakers for the PAF Conference.

    Erin Knott for taking on her new responsibilities as Stu-

    dent Liaison at ESFC with such enthusiasm and commit-ment to BPA.

    Eileen Hillmann who took over the BPA publicity dutiesfrom Jessica Pauley and has so graciously agreed to ex-pand those responsibilities to promote the conference.
