September brings a notable, if not entirely welcome, shift in our personal schedules. But we have a number of new programs in the NHPTV lineup that will help take some of the sting out of the end of summer! Having seen two episodes and heard Ken Burns talk about his latest film, The Roosevelts, I’m especially looking forward to seeing the entire series. We’re also offering two screenings this month where you can preview the documentary and hear two of his Florentine Films producers provide context on researching and making a Ken Burns film. Other programs I’m eager to share with you include two new NOVA specials on vaccines and our digital lives; several entertaining new British programs (Masterpiece, Moone Boy, Spy); and a patriotic celebration of Francis Scott Key and “The Star-Spangled Banner” on September 13th. A Star-Spangled Spectacular! The valiant defense of Fort

McHenry on the night of September 13, 1814, during the Battle of Baltimore, inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner.” His message 200 years ago and

the poem he set to music became the rallying cry for the new nation. “The Star Spangled Banner” plays a

central part in our lives, but it wasn’t until 1931 that Congress declared it our national anthem. On the occasion of the anthem’s 200th birthday, Great

Performances presents an entertainment event hosted by actor and musician John Lithgow on the beautiful Baltimore Harbor. It commemorates the anthem’s creation and the courageous battle that inspired it. Saturday, September 13 • 8 PM on NHPTV PRIME

Francis Scott Key was a lawyer who practiced before the U.S. Supreme Court. His cases were instrumental in the development of America and particularly in the issues of slavery. However, he treated his penchant for poetic and artistic endeavors as folly. Find out how that all changed because of a singular song.Saturday, September 13 • 10 PM on NHPTV PRIME
