Hello Accordionists and music friends!
Conventions for ac-cordionists have become successful here in the U.S. and in other coun-t r i e s around the world. Accordionists share their music expe-riences, join in workshop classes, play in accordion orchestras, find new mu-sic to learn and have fun listening to a wonderful multitude of music. I would encourage every accordionist or music fan to experience a music convention in 2015.
The recent Las Vegas
Accordion Convention was a phenome-nal event. All the par-ticipants had the time of their life. The first night opened with a big bang. Mr. Accordion , " The Legend" Dick Con-tino, who gave an in-spiring and most enjoya-ble concert. The week moved on with several concerts, and the final evening with the Accor-dion Orchestra. They provided an eight song performance conducted by the world renowned accordionist champion, teacher and music di-rector, Ms. Joan Som-mers. Her leadership gift and talent bring to-gether the musicianship of orchestra members to create breathtaking music arrangements. (Bob Page has written a review of this year’s convention in the news section of this newslet-ter).
Now it is time to plan and anticipate the exc i t ing October-

HAPPINESS AT ALSI
HAPPINESS AT ALSIby Sharon Marotte
August 10 was the day for our August ALSI meeting. Attendance was light but very hearty!! Mt Miguel Covenant Village is doing some construction work where the patio used to be - the big trees are gone, the patio is gone, the windows on the side of Bailey Hall are covered – progress, I guess. Players around the Village: Brandel – Sharon Ma-rotte, Café – Vicki Eriqat. Sound system was controlled by Jack Marotte & Bill Barr was the MC for the day.
-Jane Ford was our first player. Jane plays beautiful songs in a nice style: I’ll be seeing you in Apple Blossom Time, Dear Hearts, Old Cape Cod & Red Sails in the Sunset. Good job, Jane!
-Lauren Gardner is a new player to our club and a nice guy! We love to welcome new folks to ALSI. His songs were: Des-sert Song, Glow Worm & Marianno Waltz.
-Bob Page played his Roland electronic accordion for us. Bob has a beautiful smooth style of playing. His songs: Talk of the Town, Georgia, & Stormy Weath-er.
-Ron Griffin played his older Cordovox accordion with his songs: Begin the Beguine, Unforgettable, My Florence Waltz, Amor. Always good to see Ron when he is in town.
-Al Jacobs, our 90 year old birthday boy!!! Al is just amazing – stands up and plays from memory, takes requests, all with a smile. He played the Happy Birth-day song for himself in English, Mexican, Italian & Hebrew. He also played Broad-way songs: Cabaret, Mame, Hello Dolly plus Italian songs: That’s Amore, Volare, Marie plus Irish songs: When Irish Eyes GREAT FUN !!
are Smiling & a jig.
We helped Al celebrate his birthday by en-joying the cake that he brought to share. Jane Ford & Kari Andrews helped serve the cake & coffee.
-The ALSI Ensemble played after the break. Vicki Eriqat directed us as we played Italian & Broadway songs: Italian Favorites, That’s Amore, New York, New York, Amapola, Non Dimenticar & our encore song – Beer Barrel Polka. We did good – Jim on drums, Lois on percussion, Bob Page on Bass!
-Gene Lloyd played next – it was so good to see him – he lives in San Marcos so he can’t come down very often. His songs Al Di La, Wonderful World & I left my Heart in San Francisco. Please come back again!
-Joe Colombo was so cute today and he brought along a friend, they even dressed alike!! Joe played: Santa Lucia, Springtime in Venice, O Solo Mio and Non Ti Sordar Di Me. Joe’s friend, the dog, also sang O Solo Mio, with a strong voice, into the mike and was great!!
-The mighty duet of Ron Griffin & Gor-don Kohl dazzled us with several songs –it was quite a treat!! Their songs were: Gay Ranchero, Return to Me, Pennsylvania Polka & La Paloma. Lots of fancy playing.
-Gordon Kohl ended the day with some great songs and some history included: Once in Awhile, I’m in the Mood for Love, Twilight Time, Andantino (Moonlight & Roses), Stranger in the Night and Amazing Grace. We truly enjoy listening to Gor-don play – he is a master of the keys!!
Once again we had a fun time with friends and lots of music. Come and join us, maybe even play a tune!! —

AL’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
San Diego Follies
by Sharon Marotte
Vicki Eriqat & I were part of the San Diego Follies in June, 2014 which was held at Lincoln High School. ‘San Diego Follies goes Holly-wood’ was the theme. We auditioned in Feb-ruary and started rehearsals in April. We made many trips out to El Cajon to the CYT building rehearsal space on Pioneer Way. We met many new friends and saw lots of folks that we knew before. We were also in the Follies 2009 & 2010.
We played our accordions in t he num ber “Belly up to the Bar”. At one point we were right down front, on the edge of the stage. Many people said they couldn’t hear us play but we got the accordion on stage, at least. The hardest part was carrying our
accordions on stage & memorizing the song, plus working with false eye lashes & make up!!!
We really appreciated people that came to see our show. It was fun to go out front to see if we had any fans there. We hope to audition again next year. —

Complete information is available at website://w w w . c o u p e m o n d i a l e . o r g / 2 0 1 4 /at_coupe_main.htm —LAS VEGAS INTERNATION ACCOR-DION CONVENTION This event was held on Aug. 18th to 21st at the Gold Coast Hotel in Las Vegas Nevada. This year’s event was well attended and featured lunch and evening concerts, workshops and an international ac-cordion orchestra under the direction of Joan Cochran Sommers that performed on the final Thursday concert. This concert was special since it included several pieces that featured the vocal skills of the accordionist Alicia Baker. Among the other concert performers were; Dick Contino, Joey Miskulin, Stas Venglevski, Gordon Kohl, Chuck Henry, Peter Soave, Ron Borelli, Alicia Baker, and Michael Bridge. The workshops ranged from master classes to im-provisation techniques to music notation soft-ware, to performance skills, to the art of prac-ticing and many other topics. The workshops were very well prepared with many hand-outs. The lunch and dinner meals were of excellent quality and helped make the event more enjoy-able as they were combined with daily con-certs by the guest artists. For more infor-mation about next year’s event scheduled for June 22-25, contact Paul Pasquali at 801-485-5840. —
