September means vacation timeis over. Where did you go? What

did you do? Where we went andwhat we did doesn’t much matter,as long as we get away from wherewe are and from what we’ve beendoing. Vacation means a chancefor something different; to provideus with new dreams, new adven-tures and new thoughts.

September starts out with La-bor Day on the first Monday. Thenit is Rosh Hashanah on Septem-ber 4, which begins the Jewish NewYear. Then Yom Kipper follows onSeptember 13, which is always atime for reflection as well as beinga time of hope and promise. Thenwe arrive at the first day of au-tumn on September 22. In betweenthose times is September 11, one ofthe most terrifying days in history,a most solemn time never to forget.

So, autumn brings about achange of seasons with some tingesof color perhaps for certain foliage. It is the season of harvest, whenall that has been sown in the fieldscomes to fruition with the fall.

Maybe, too, there might be somechange in attitude and disposition.A wise thought from the Bible ex-presses the idea: “In whatsoeverstate I am, I have learned to becontent.” Turning that thoughtupside down, we find that to becontent is to be satisfied, while tobe discontent is to be dissatisfied.Which is better? If we remain sat-isfied, there is no progress forward. If we are content with what is,then we do not try to improve oursituation.

Just as autumn moves our time-table forward; so, as age creepsupon us we can look back to thoseformer days of yore and believethat out of the past comes a senseof accomplishment and fulfillmentwhich have been achieved.

That is the way it is with SahibShriners. We have heard it saidmany times. To remain contentwith the way things are and ceaseto bring in new members, we donot go forward. So, may God blessus all with that true Masonic spiritand let us be up and doing!

Lady Bobbi and I are great fansof the Little League World Se-

ries and have had it tuned in forthe last week and look forward toanother week of more of the same. There is surely a high degree ofcompetitiveness, but it is mixedwith civility and morality. It doesone’s heart good to see the frater-nal and familial ties of all the teamsand their families. The program isbuilding across the world. This yearteams from Australia and theCzech Republic joined the program,a testament that character-build-ing activities like the Little Leagueare important to most societies.

We have to hope that characterbuilding and morality will remainan endeavor that stays a part ofmore societies, and that Freema-sonry will continue to make contri-

butions in the same why LittleLeague does. Shrine is also spread-ing, perhaps the groups in PuertoRico, Germany and the Philippineswill inject a new enthusiasm therest of us can feed off of as westruggle to keep our fraternity fromdwindling, we need to keep our eyeson what draws people to organiza-tions like ours and the Little League.

We are members of the largestand oldest fraternity in the world, almost everyone has a father orgrandfather or uncle who was aMason, but many people aren'tquite certain just who Masons are.

There are things we want to doin the world. There are things wewant to do “inside our own minds”and we enjoy being together withmen we like and respect. That iswhat we need to promote.

Potentate’sNotes

Hello nobles,

Nobles and ladies, the Imperial Season is now history and it lasted till noon on Thursday,July 4. We still had several “Call” items to discuss on Thursday and Past Potentate BruceSteube had the honor of picking up everyone’s check. Thank you, Bruce! We had a greatget-together dinner on Wednesday evening with eighteen present; one couple tossed usoff for greener pastures.

Our one and only Great Oriental Band took First Place in one event and third overall, celebrating by inducting Oriental Guide Bill Balkwill and High Priest and ProphetCarroll Scribner in to the Band. What a “Coo!” Please congratulate them. Remember PhilStaples? He would have been proud. Way to go nobles. We all went our separate waysafter Imperial, A. R. Connie Jacobi to St. Louis to visit his daughter; Stacey and myself toour three-week hiatus; Indy to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; to Glens Falls, NewYork; toOxford, Pennsylvania; to Manassas, Virginia to Auto Train and home! Hopefully, we gotthe traveling out of our system. We also understand the Shipleys took a tour of ourwestern states. I’m personally looking for the second half to bring a little more fun andless work.

Our temple remained closed for the first two weeks in July with much activity. OurRitual Room was finally repaired with monetary aid of $1,000 from our Manatee ShrineClub. We finally have our combination projector/audio equipment installed in the mainhall. The lounge has been repaired and painted from contributions to our First Lady’sProject. The L.O.S. and individual ladies contributions amounted to $720, $200 fromMary Ellen Pickering’s estate and so far, $500 from Manatee Shrine Club for a total as ofJuly 4 of $1420. We had an initial bid of $2300, however the north wall was found to bedamp so more money was needed. I have asked several clubs and hopefully, morecontributions will be in the chute. I would like to finish the Sahara Rooms but there areno more funds.

All of the Divan were to be home by the end of July so the first week in August was veryactive. Bingo is still going strong, Thank Goodness! I want to thank all nobles and ladiesfor your support this year and hope for more fun to come. God Bless and stay safe.

God Bless All!

Chief Rabban’s notesby Rocky Kearney, [email protected]

Recorder’s notesby Don Vos, [email protected]

Assistant Rabban’s notesby Connie Jacobi, [email protected]

Here’s what’s happening in your Recorder’s office. We have been up-grading all of the pertinent

manuals for the Divan, the Club and Units, and ourvalued employees. This process takes several days ofreworking the documents. Our hope is that it takesout the gray areas that we have been doing, with ouremployees and we are all on the same track. TheEmployee Handbook was a necessary chore to get itup-to-date with all of the necessary changes thathave been accumulating. After all, it is your Divanand temple. We want to do the proper accomplish-ments for you the nobility.

Things coming up at Sahib Shrine; do not forgetyour Birthday and Anniversary Dinner Dances. Weare trying entertainment in the lounge on Friday

nights. Please come, have dinner with your Shrinerfriends and have a great evening. After all, it is yourShrine. Let’s all support your Shrine. The Fall Picnicwill be coming up and the committee is working hardfor the event scheduled for September 22.

Nobles let’s not forget Bingo, it’s our premierfundraiser for Sahib. Maybe you always wanted tocall, and this is your chance. Please help in whateveryou can do. Let us all try and help with this great, daytime venue. It does not take up too much time.

Also, let us not forget our Great Florida Lodges.Attend and keep up with what’s happening. It’s whatbrought everybody to the Shrine and it should be oneveryone’s agenda.

Nobles and friends, each month I sit here in frontof my computer and write about the events that

I attended and what a great time was had by all.Heck, you all know that as many of you were there. With July just ending; there weren’t many events toattend unless you were among those cleaning up forpainting. By the way, thanks to all that chipped in forthe cleaning of the kitchen so it could be painted. Itcame out nice.

This was a good month to sit back and think howlucky I am for being able to participate in the happen-ings at Sahib. Being a cabinetmaker in the new houseconstruction industry, the last five years have beenvery lean. I have seen hundreds of workers folding uptheir businesses. Having my health, all the greatfriends at Sahib make me feel like a millionaire. Iknow this recession has paid its toll on all, andtogether we will get through this!

Now, let’s see what’s coming up in the near future. We have a parade on Labor Day weekend in Engle-wood. September 12 will be Shriners recognition atthe Tampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox game. Not allthe details have been ironed out; at the writing of thisarticle, but I believe it would be tons of fun for us toget a busload or two from here to go to the game. Onthe 22nd, there will be the Family Picnic at SahibShriners. Carroll Scribner has dug deep into his bagof tricks to set up games and lots of fun for this event.I want to thank Scrib for taking the lead on setting upthis picnic, as I have been cleaning and painting thehouse to which our family is moving.

We are also starting to plan our annual trip to theTrop. for the Shrine East/West game. We need every-one to pass the word on this game to help spreadinformation about Shrinedom and the impact we

Summer is history but the trade winds canstill blow a big storm towards us, let’s hope it doesn’t.

The Imperial Session in Indy is over and it surewas an interesting one; congrats to Imp. Sir JohnCinotto for being elected Imperial Potentate. I’m sureyou have read Recorder Emeritus Bill Batten’s articleon the Session. Each of your delegates who went cameout of it with something different.

I picked up on Membership—we are now wellbelow 300,000 and it is scary to see it fall to those newnumbers. Your Membership Committee is and hasbeen working very hard to get new members, but it issomething that we should all take a hard look at andsee if we can help get those membership numbers upby asking our family and friends to become a part ofSahib Shriners. We are one of best fraternities tobelong to; we help kids and that is our future.

To see first hand the young ambassadors who willbe out there spreading the word for Shriners Interna-tional will be exciting this year. These are our Kidsand they want to tell the world that we are here tohelp those in need of our Shriners hospitals for Chil-dren. The Shrine hospitals are working on new ser-vices to be available hopefully in the very near future. We are moving forward to help many children in thisworld for we are International now and still growing.

To all the nobles and their ladies who worked atthe Shrine during our yearly shut down, I would liketo thank you for your time and talent. The Shrine islooking much better and it makes it easier to keep itup to snuff. Thank you, thank you.

Stay healthy and remember those who are not! Iam proud to serve the nobility of Sahib Shriners!

Greetings nobles! It is September already, and ouryear is flying by at a rapid pace.

Sadly the black camel has struck. Our band leader,Tom, had open heart surgery at Blake Hospital, rightafter our last dinner dance in June, and unfortu-nately, did not survive. It’s a big loss for Gulf ShrineClub.

Our next Gulf Shrine Club meeting will be at theAmerican Legion on 75th Street in Bradenton onSeptember 10. Social Hour is at 11:30 a.m. with lunchat 12:00 noon.

Sahib’s Fall Picnic, a day of fun, is September 22from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Your help is needed at

the picnic. The Clubs and Units Casino Night isNovember 1. Our help is also needed for that event.

Our next Dinner Dance and Social is November 19at Tara Golf and Country Club.

I would like to personally thank Lady CherieAshburn for her greeting and presentation of ourwidows. Each lady was presented with a wrist cor-sage and Lady Cherie gave background informationas they were introduced. Lady Cherie also gave someinteresting information of the Gulf Shrine Club.

The club is diligently looking for fundraisers andstreamlining our activities. I wish all of the “snow-birds” a safe trip back to Manatee County. Hurryhome, we miss you!

Motor Corps Shrine Clubby Giles Light (G-man), Secretary, [email protected]

The Bikerbilly dinners are now history. We surehope you had a chance to visit us on the Thursday

nights in July and August when the Motor Corpsfilled in for the Hillbilly Shrine Club. Between 80 and100 of your fellow Shriners and their friends did dinewith us each Thursday night during our seven-weekrun. Financial results will be forthcoming over thenext few weeks. We appreciate everyone’s supportand say thanks to the Motor Corps members and theirladies for helping out. We couldn’t have done it with-out the help of the ladies.

The August Birthday-Anniversary Dinner Dance inAugust was sponsored by the Motor Corps. If you weren’tthere, you missed out on a delightful evening. Musicalentertainment was provided by Taylor & Taylor. Wealso enjoyed the Pork Chop Creole or Butter crumbHaddock Fillet entrée selections. Dress for that eventwas dressy biker or summer casual with vests (leatheror cloth) preferred. The Motor Corps members natu-rally wore their distinctive leather vests.

The annual Englewood Pioneer Day Parade isscheduled for Labor Day, September 2 at 9:00 a.m.The Motor Corps expects to participate in the paradealong with the other units of Sahib. Hopefully theweather won’t be too warm for the Harley Davidsonmotorcycles. Motor Corps members enjoy this paradeand the afterglow at the Englewood Elks Club.

Several members of the Motor Corps are planningtheir “Fall Ride to the Mountains” in Murphy, NorthCarolina. We’ve tentatively settled on later this monthor the third weekend of October. Plans are to ride upto Murphy on a Thursday and return on Sunday.

Many of our members will be saying at the RiversEdge Mountain RV Resort owned by one of our mem-bers, Gary Nickols. More than a dozen of our membersmade the trip to Murphy for our Spring Ride in May.

On Sunday, November 17, the Motor Corps will beholding its fall spaghetti dinner. This event has al-ways been a success and is enjoyed by our fellowShriners and friends. More details will be availablein next month’s Sahib Reporter, so stayed tuned. We are looking forward to a big turnout this yearwhich is about two weeks before Thanksgiving. Andin case you don’t remember from previous years, ourspaghetti dinners include salad, rolls, wine and allthe spaghetti you can eat. What a deal!

Kudos to two of our members for recent Masonichonors they’ve received. As you may have read in lastmonth’s Reporter, Norm Cyphers (Stormin Norman)was installed as District Deputy Grand Master of the27th Masonic District. Mike Harrell (Beefy) was re-cently elected as Grand Sentinel of the Grand Chap-ter of the Florida Order of the Eastern Star. Thismeans that he will be Worthy Grand patron of theGrand Chapter beginning in April 2015.

We don’t have too many birthdays and anniversa-ries to report in September. Birthdays for Septemberare Eric Bock (Speedtriple) on the 7th, Mike Harrell(Beefy) on the 12th, Norm Cyphers (Stormin Norman)on the 25th and Ben Pfeiffer (Inspector) on the 29th.We have two anniversaries in September: Dave Bell(Jetfoot) and Lady Rita (Sweet Pea) on the 6th andJoe Stella (Stroker Joe) and Lady Suzy Lucas (CreamCheese) on the 7th.

The days are getting shorter and temperatures willbegin to drop. Our snow nobles will begin to

trickle back and hopefully increase the attendance atour Tuesday breakfasts. Unfortunately, lines at ourrestaurants and various places of entertainment willform and get longer as the season progresses, so be it!The Tourism Agency loves it. One positive note, theearly arrivals will have time to enjoy part of ourspectacular hurricane season. Aren’t you glad youreturned early? Some of the, “we love hot and humid,”group that keeps the seats warm (cool?) through thenon-cool season are pictured here. (see photo page 11).

As is customary the North Port Shrine Club meetsyear-round, Tuesdays 7:30 a.m. at the Olde WorldRestaurant NP for feasting, fun and once in awhilewe chuck in some business to address. We encourageall area Shriners, Masons and spouses to join with us.For area brothers and nobles who are not members ofthe “Best Shrine Club in Shriners International” wehave a membership application just for you.

J.D. Copher spearheaded a collection July 6 forthe St. Vincent De Paul charities. Eight North PortShrine Club members collected $156; nice job J.D.

Our North Port Shrine Club magazine program ison going with members contributing scads of maga-zines onto which our Club/Shrine sticker (see photoon page 11) is applied and the magazines are deliv-ered to five North Port Fire and Rescue stations, theNorth Port Sarasota Hospital Medical Facility, NorthPort Florida Blood Center, Progressive Therapy andNorth Port Pines and Gardens Assistant Living fa-cilities. The program provides exposure for our cluband Shriners International and hopefully some read-ing pleasure for the recipients. In June another 150+magazines were distributed. Don’t forget the alumi-num pull-tabs for Bob (can man) Arnold. Thank you, nobles!

The North Port Shrine Club weekly incentive hada winner on June 18, Cliff Bloodsworth, cogratsCliff! June 25, July 2 were PP Tom Millaway and Jim

Gates alas, not winners, July 9 Joe Harrington awinner (again!), July 16 Assistant Rabban ConnieJacobi non-winner, July 23 Bill Athas non-winner.

Tuesday Bingo always needs volunteers, it is funand enjoyable and a big money maker for our SahibShriners. Give it a try.

Model Ts / Classic Carsby Ron LeVene, President, [email protected]

Well, we are halfway through our summer al-ready. Anybody getting any rain at his place,

guess that the drought is over and the weather isgetting back to normal. The Model T’s decided againsttaking the long drive north for SESA competition. It’sa long way and expensive to haul the cars that far andattendance at competitions continues to dwindle. It isa sad thing when only one or two groups show up forcompetition and is another reminder of our dwindlingShrine participation in many things. In my opinion,we need to bring back the fun, though I do realize thatour society has put the stop to many activities. It isgetting more difficult and expensive to put on aparade. It is getting more difficult to find a hotel thatwill allow hospitality rooms for events, and our mem-bers are getting older and less in number every year.

The Model T/Classic Cars group will not give up soeasy. We continue with our monthly Monday lunchesand other social events. We still attend the FSAcompetitions and those SESA competitions that arereasonable for us to attend.

We gave a donation last month to the Sahib Shrinefor $500 to help with renovations and our treasurycontinues to dwindle. Any idea you may have for afundraising event, I am glad to listen.

Many of our group are also members of ManateeShrine Club, so I will take this opportunity to plugone of their fundraisers. The world-renowned Mana-tee Shrinie Club Steak Fry is coming up in November.Look forward to seeing you all there!

Flash! Flash! Flash! The great Sahib Oriental Bandhas done it again! At the 2013 Imperial Session in

Indianapolis, Indiana, we captured another 1st PlaceTrophy in Stage Performance and Second in Parade. Thanks to our Music Director Floyd LaDue, our per-formance was stellar.

Just a little history of the Great Sahib OrientalBand: They went to their first Imperial session InOrlando, and took part in the Fantasy while stillunder dispensation in 1982. In 1983, the band re-ceived their charter. This will be the bands 24thperformance at an Imperial session since 1984. Theband has won eleven first place trophies and eightsecond place trophies in all categories of the stageFantasy. The Oriental Band was judged best overallband in 1985 in Atlanta. In 2006 in Tampa and in2012 in Charlotte, North Carolina Floyd LaDue, ourDirector, won the “Caliph’s” Trophy for best musicdirector in Charlotte, North Carolina. In addition, the band won many first place trophies in the allFlorida and Southwestern Fantasy Competitions.

The Black Camel has taken one of our key mem-bers of the Oriental Band, namely our base drummerand Past President of the Oriental Band, PhilipStaples. Our sympathy to Stephany “Cookie” Staplesand her family; we will miss our friend and noble.

We are already planning for a very busy seasonahead. Parades and Shrine functions are at the headof the list; the Englewood Pioneer Parade being thefirst.

The offer still stands, if anyone wants to join the“Fun” unit, we promise lots of that. During the sea-son, we practice every Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.at the Shrine. C’mon let’s try it, you might like it andbecome a member of our band.

“Remember, support your Shrine, collect pull-tabsand bottle caps and keep a child in your heart.

Thought for the month: “Education is when youread the fine print. Experience is what you get if youdon’t.”

We are saddened at the deaths of Phil Staples andArt Monson.

Summer is over and new ideas and suggestionsneed to be developed on a spaghetti dinner and a chili/ribs cookout. The steak fry will be coming shortly inNovember.

The parade season will be upon us soon, the firstparade will be on September 5, in Venice. We willmeet at the Sahib temple at 8:00 a.m. Following theparade there will be an after glow in the parking lotof the Elks Lodge.

High Priest & Prophet’s notesby Carroll Scribner, [email protected]

Hi again to all. We are off and running for a busyfall season with Ceremonial, Circus, parades,

unit and club visitations, holiday activities etc., etc.A very busy time for all.

I attended the Imperial Session and even thoughI was not a delegate, I was able to sit in on mostactivities and learn!

Don’t sit in the middle of a row—the meetings arelong and the johns are far away!!

Make sure you have your dues card - they won’t letyou in without it!

Be prepared for a lot of walking and waiting -things are well spaced out.

Listen to the views and problems of many temples,we are not alone.

Watch the process of change—and marvel that alldoes get done!

Become a member of the Oriental Band along withBill Balkwill and help win a trophy to join the manyalready on their shelves! They did their usual out-standing job of representing you!

Salute Bill Batten for the great job he does inbringing back the essence of many hours of meetings;a very rare skill!

Thanks to the Balkwills for showing us wondrousplaces to dine with great pomp and ado!

Thanks to the Potentate for a fine dinner evening!!

Bottom line—well worth the time and energy. I’lldo a better job next time!

Our primary and most important effort now hasto be and is membership!

You are membership—everyone is a member ofthe committee—each of you has a major stake in ourtemple. You can either make or break it.

We need members—no ifs, ands or buts aboutit.

If we fail, the failure lies on all shoulders, notjust your committees.

If we fail, the temple is in peril,If we fail, our units are in peril,If we fail, our clubs are in peril,If we fail, our temple will be dark—perma-

nently! That is what we face—it cannot be avoided,

delayed, deferred or put off.It must be faced and dealt with. Can we count on your efforts and support?Replace yourself, each one get one; these are

not impossible goals, help us reach them!My other important job for this fall is as Volunteer

Coordinator for the Circus coming up on October 4and 5. We’ll need about 35 to 40 volunteers per showin various jobs, all-important and we need you to helpdo the job.

Page 21: September 2013

September 2013 SAHIB REPORTER Page 21

Oriental Guide’s notesby Bill Balkwill, [email protected]

Jobs to be done: Ushers, drivers, traffic control, greeters, corn poppers, student guides etc., etc. I’ll bemeeting with the Circus folks to get a better hand onit and I’ll be in touch.

Every unit and club that I have already talkedwith are on board! We need you!

Enough for now, see you on the road. If I can helpat all, give me a call (941) 488 4363.

Well, I attended my first Imperial Session inIndianapolis, Indiana. Both Lady Gail and I

enjoyed meeting new people and networking withmany Shriners. It was my pleasure meeting withImperial Potentate John Cinotto in the elevator andtalking about the future of the Shrine. Of course, theconversation was mostly about how to increase mem-bership and strengthen the fraternity. Very nice man!

I also had the opportunity to meet many newShriners while exchanging Potentate pins and ideasof what’s going on in everybody’s temples. I promiseto display these pins in the lounge sometime in thenear future.

Our Oriental Band performed at the ImperialSession and not to anyone’s surprise we took firstplace (Yes, we!). The members of the Oriental Banddecided to call High Priest and Prophet, Carroll Scrib-ner and myself to the stage to play the tambourinesand perform with them. And to think…..they couldhave lost! Boy did we have fun! In fact, we had so

much fun Scribner joined the band. As far as me, Iknow my limitations. Our own Noble Floyd LaDue,and Paul Pante (the Greek), are the best performersI have ever seen! Noble Floyd is by far the bestconductor at the competition. With the cymbalsthrough the legs (don’t try that at home), to droppingthem on key. No other conductor came close to histalents. So when you see an Oriental Band member, say, “Thanks for representing our Shrine as the bestof the best”!

When I returned, I had the opportunity to checkup on the redecorating of the lounge and the cleaningof the temple. As you know the lounge was repainted,(which was needed), the kitchen was repainted andcleaned, and a new projector was installed in themain hall. I want to thank all the ladies and noblesthat participated in accomplishing this task; and aspecial thank you to Second Ceremonial Master DelRawlinson, for keeping everyone on task.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thankRecorder Don Vos PP for helping me get through someof the Sahib Shriners policy and procedures as theyarise. He, along with the help of the Divan, has alsorevised the policies and procedures for this year.

In the Transportation Unit, Noble Bob Martin justaccomplished his 400th run to the hospital. What anaccomplishment! Drive Safely!

We just had a club/unit head meeting and I dan-gerously asked nearly 25 members what their favor-ite meal is at the temple. The results are 10 PrimeRib, 5 Spaghetti with sausage with meatballs orlasagna, 4 some type of fish (preferred some type ofcrabmeat stuffing), and several miscellaneous(meatloaf, turkey, salads and liver & onions). Oneperson said, “peanuts at the bar.” I guess they don’teat dinner! We will have a poll at Thursday’sluncheon….stay tuned for further updates.

Last but not least, we are really trying as a Divanto network with as many clubs and units to find outwhat you expect and want to do at our temple in thefuture. Whether it’s dinner dances (and the type ofmusic you want), Saturday football, Sunday Buc’sDay, Support the Rays heading to the playoffs, FallPicnic, Golf Tournament, East/West Shrine Game, etc. Please, this is your temple. We as Divan mem-bers want to make it better for you! So fill out asuggestion card or let a Divan member know whatyou think.

Remember, Support your Shrine and keep a childin your heart!

Masonic Digest

“Farewell”by M∴W∴ Jorge Luis “George” Aladro, Past Grand Master of Masons of Florida

It has been an interesting journey and I have en-joyed communicating with the Craft for nearly

three years. I cannot tell you how much your com-ments and feedback has meant to me whether posi-tive or negative, whether we engaged in an exchangeof emails or just received your comments.

It has been wonderful to find that we had Brothersthat have received the Discourse as far out as Austra-lia and the British Isle or who knows maybe further.I was really amazed as some of the Brothers in thesecountries made commentary of receiving the Dis-course that had been forwarded to them by friends.

I thank all the Brothers that recognized the valuein the messages to forward them to other Brothersand more especially those that used some of theDiscourses for educating their membership in theirLodge, that was especially nice to hear and it inspiredme to continue in this endeavor.

I always wonder how many Brothers received theDiscourse not just through my email but also thosethat had been forwarded. It’s interesting how thisthing called internet can reach such long distancesinstantaneously. I don’t know if we will ever find out,but it sure would be interesting to know. If you canhelp by dropping me a note telling me where you areand how many you forwarded it would be interestingtracking this last Discourse.

It has been a true pleasure communicating withMasons that have the best interest of the fraternity athand and want to raise the bar in an effort to improvethe quality of the membership and practice Masonryas it was intended.

Masonry has always been selective, even in itsoperative state it was not open to everyone, and thetrade was handed down from fathers to sons. As amatter of fact the concept of Grand Lodges was cre-ated to slow down the indiscriminate acceptance ofindividuals and create a standard with minimumrequirements as to age, reputation, servitude, andbelief in a supreme being.

The concept started three decades ago of one dayclasses to turn around the eroding numbers duemainly to the non-payment of dues at least in theGrand Lodges in the United States. This has clearlynot worked and has not had the effect of turningaround the loss of membership. This is a cyclicalevent much like others in society and we have expe-rience them before, during the 1800’s and 1900’s alsofollowed by periods of growth.

Anytime you experience a large influx of peopleduring a certain period of time you must also expectto lose a large number of people down the road bynormal attrition. We have been experiencing this thelast three to seven decades depending on what part ofthe country you are in and when your Grand Lodgepeaked its membership. There were several reasonsfor this, one we didn’t worry for quite some time andby the time we started to address the situation wewere behind the eight ball.

Two - those that experienced it later ignored whatwas happening in their Sister Grand Lodges as theywere still having positive growth. Three - when every-one decided that there was a problem as they saw it(I don’t believe there is a problem) the response wasto keep the Degree fees low and keep the dues downso as to bring in more candidates that can afford it.We lowered the requirements in the sense that cat-echisms were shortened or eliminated, no educationrequired, we created the one-day class and we basi-cally laid to rest the high requirements and moralstandards we had for nearly 250 years, and still wehave not turned the loss around. Guess what, you willnever do it this way, it has never worked before andit will not work in the future.

You may ask yourself, why is he saying that? Theanswer is simple, men coming to Masonry who arelooking for a social club will never fit in and will soonleave or never participate. Men who are looking forvalue such as personal and spiritual growth do notfind it in our system today or let’s say in very fewplaces, and by far leave because you promise to makehim better and you failed to deliver by lowering therequirements and not providing him the vehicle bywhich he can achieve your promise to make good menbetter, you failed to deliver on your promise.

We are so afraid to stand up for the great thingsour fraternity should represent and are tearing at thevery fabric of this great institution trying to make itinclusive of everyone. We have erased the clearlyblack and white issues of morality and have made agreat shade of gray; we make excuses for wrongdoing,we have lost our sense of justice, we continue to erodethe deportment required in our assemblies and fi-nally have lost all sense of gentlemanly conduct.

The turnaround of our fraternity will not dependon a leadership that by far changes yearly, the turn-around will depend on the membership which re-mains a constant and continuity of the Craft andtherefore it will even be more difficult when themajority of the Craft have not been educated inMasonry and the only thing they know is the presentsystem of lower standards and requirements. Onlythrough research and education can we start to learnhow to properly observe how our Craft was meant to bepracticed. Stay the course, “Be a Leader; Make it Hap-pen,” on your shoulders rest the salvation of the Craft.

You need to be the one Brother in your lodge thatcan make the change by educating and leading byword and deed those who have truly come to the Craftlooking to improve themselves in Masonry both per-sonally and spiritually. I charge each and every one ofyou to make a difference.

In closing this will be my last Discourse, I like youwill continue to work in the quarries of Freemasonrytrying to educate my Brothers and promoting the bestthis noble and ancient institution has to offer forhigher quality, greater achievements, and better menaround the world.

Masonryhas always

beenselective,

even in itsoperative

state...

York Rite – The York Rite Storyby B. John Ross, KYCH, [email protected]

Scottish Riteby Lou Ortt, PP, 33°, [email protected]

The York Rite takes its name from the ancientEnglish City of York, around whose minster, or

cathedral, cluster many Masonic traditions. Heretraditions tell us, Atheistan, first king of all England,(who reigned more than a thousand years ago), grantedthe original charter to the Masonic guilds.

The component parts of the American York Riteare: The Symbolic (Blue) Lodges which are governedby Grand Lodges, The Chapters of the Royal ArchMasons which are subordinate to Grand Chapters,The Councils of Royal and Select masters undercontrol of Grand Councils, and the Commanderies ofKnights Templar which are governed by GrandCommanderies under the ultimate authority of theGrand Encampment, Knights Templar of the U.S.A.All of these are established on democratic principleswhere the senior officers are elected by and from themembership of that particular organization. Whilethere is no central authority of The York Rite, theleaders and officers at all echelons of Symbolic, Ca-pitular, Cryptic, and Chivalric Masonry coordinateand cooperate as if they were part of one organiza-tion.

York Rite Degrees and OrdersThe Symbolic Lodge

Entered Apprentice - The first degree in Free-masonry, and one of the three essential degrees in allrites. Its background, like many of the others, is thebuilding of King Solomon’s in Jerusalem. The candi-date receives here the beginning of the instructionswhich are to guide him in the search of the secret ofFreemasonry.

Fellowcraft -In the second degree, with the samesetting, the candidate proceeds on his journey towardthe attainment of Masonic knowledge.

Master Mason - In this, the third degree, theSublime Degree of Master Mason, the candidate re-ceives light as fully as it may come to be in theSymbolic Lodge, and the substitute for that which byfurther search he may hope to receive later, the realsecret of a Master Mason. After the candidate re-ceives this degree he receives no greater or higherhonor, but in the attainment; of other degrees hereceives further light and more knowledge of whatthe Masonic lesson is, and what the institution ofFreemasonry seeks to teach (to be continued.)

Have you thought about your cable tow lately? Itis a symbol with both spiritual and physical

symbolism. The source of the phrase “cable tow” isuncertain, but is possibly from a Hebrew word mean-ing “pledge of the body.” The earliest reference I canfind to cable tow or rope tow is in Kings 20:31, whenthe servants of the defeated Syrians tied ropes aroundtheir heads and went to the King of Israel to plead formercy. In Carl Claudy’s book Introduction to Freema-sonry he says, “It is symbolic of the life cord by whichan embryo receives life from the mother; it is theMasonic cord by which a Masonic infant is attached tohis mother lodge. As soon as the infant is born thephysical cord is severed, but the spiritual cord re-mains intact.

In Masonry, the physical cord is removed as soonas the spiritual tie of the obligation is assumed. Withthis tie in mind, the fraternity has given the cable towmany different lengths according to the brother’s

ability and the scope of his desires. It is said to be thelength of man’s conscience between himself and God,as no man can define the length of his spiritual tie. Each must serve as his own judge and jury. Measure-ment of service should have no physical restraintsplaced on it by others.

With this in mind, I remind each of you that as weget into September our fraternity goes into full opera-tion. We encourage each of you to look into yourschedules and circle your meeting dates. It is also agood time to round up those petitions. Tampa Scot-tish Rite will hold its Fall Reunion on Saturday,October 19 and 26. Let us stretch our cable tows to notonly attend the Reunion, but to find a candidate forthe class.

Scottish Rite will also meet on September 9, whenwe will honor all Masonic Lodges and Youth Groups.A dinner will be served at 5:45 p.m. for a donation of$9.00.

I raise my prayers to the Great Architect of theUniverse that we can turn this fraternity around.Make this your commitment as a dedication to ourthree-hundred year anniversary, which is just aroundthe corner. We may not get there by 2017, but at leastwe can be well on our way, we did not get hereovernight, but we can certainly start the movementtowards the right direction, one Brother at a time, one lodge at a time and be the beacon of light and hopefor this fraternity’s third century.

Farewell my Brothers, God speed in all your under-takings may they be fruitful and influential, to thebenefit of our great fraternity. God Bless Freemasonry.

“My Brothers, these newsletters were intended to bethought provoking, to get you to think creatively, to getyou thinking, what if?, to dare you to improve yourselfand your lodge.”

While at Grand Council this year, Iattended a special session on member-ship and received the following articlethat made a strong impact on many oth-ers and me.

In our beloved Shrine—we have whatis recognized as the world’s greatest fra-ternal product. We have a package thathas tremendous merchandise appeal.Wrapped with colorful activity and tiedwith bands of wonderful purpose. Ours isa product that is “All Good.” While it isworld famous—and while it has excellentacceptance—It must be sold.

I urge you to go forth with a positivemanner. Tell your prospect what Shrine-dom will mean to her. Talk in terms ofself-interest—paint a vivid word picture—make her want to join.

Tell her – Our Court name and num-ber, of the fun and social affairs.

Tell her – In Shrine she will share afellowship that is unequaled to tone, qual-ity and sincerity.

Tell her – In Shrine she will profitfrom meeting the big, the small, the suc-

cessful, the humble, the famous, all on thesame level.

Tell her – In Shrine she will have anopportunity to participate in an activityof individual interest.

Tell her – As a Lady Shriner she willshare in the joy of being a living part ofour Shriners’ 22 hospitals and 3 BurnCenters for Children.

If you Lady Shriners will go forth anddeal in positive facts, we will sell ourproduct and meet the challenge by bring-ing our Court many fine new members. But To Sell It We Must Tell It!

Mark your calendars now for the 2014 Imperial Session in Minneapolis. We look forward to your participation in the fraternity’s most important event of the year.

Plan Now to Attend the 2014 Imperial Session in Minneapolis

The 2014 Imperial Session is scheduled for July 6-10, 2014, in Minneapolis. Named one of the “world’s cleanest cities” by MSN, Minneapolis has an array of offerings for every guest. Come visit where “nature meets skyscrapers!”

Minneapolis, in addition to being one of the “world’s cleanest cities,” is also home to many world-class museums and theaters. Visitors can enjoy a variety of shows in the Tony Award-winning Guthrie Theater, discover wonders at the Science Museum of Minnesota and marvel at the Walker Art Center, one of the best contemporary art museums in the country, according to Newsweek.

Noted for its architectural blending of glass and steel, travelers are encouraged to see Minneapolis’ beauty from a variety of vantage points through the city’s various tours. For those who love to shop, Minneapolis is home to Mall of America, the country’s largest shopping complex. The city is also the site of both Target’s flagship store and a Macy’s that covers more than 400,000 square feet.

Recognized by the American Fitness Index as the “Fittest City in America,” Minneapolis has noteworthy parks that offer a variety of outdoor activities, including canoeing, biking and skating. If you’re willing to travel just a bit, about an hour away from the city there is even an opportunity to drive a military tank! Minneapolis is also home to several sports teams at the both the professional and

amateur levels. From ice hockey to baseball, there’s a game and a team to cheer for!

For those who enjoy the night life, Minneapolis offers some of the nation’s best restaurants, such as Hell’s Kitchen and Solera Restaurant and Event Center, comedy theaters, and cafés. On the first Thursday of every month, the city’s art district opens its doors to offer live entertainment, art shows and gallery tours.

To learn more about this lively city, please visit minneapolis.org.

The Kem and Zuhrah Shriners, as well as the members of the Midwest Shrine Association, are all looking forward to joining Deputy Imperial Potentate Dale Stauss in welcoming you to the 2014 Imperial Session of Shriners International. Mark your calendars now, and be sure to attend the fraternity’s most important event of the year. For more information about the 2014 Imperial Session, visit imperial2014.com.

The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donatingaluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As ofMarch 31, 2013, they have collected 89, 199 lbs., for a total of$45,917.87 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS

1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete canswould require a great deal more storage space. You shouldgo ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way,in the dumpster behind Sahib.

2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267.3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds

worth.4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs

are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. Themoney netted from recycling goes directly into the “WheelChair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital forChildren.

Help us collect TABS! It’s easy and it’s fun! Put out a milk jug at every picnic or party!
