Welcome to Concours du Soleil 2012Here we are again together for the most exciting event of the fall season in Albuquerque, Concours du Soleil! We welcome you to our 8th annual show, bigger and better than ever.

It is important that we thank each car owner for generously sharing their beloved automobile(s) with us year after year. They work to ensure their car is show-ready, perfectly polished and ready for your viewing pleasure. They are the heart of our show and some of the finest people you will meet.

Second, we thank our sponsors and major contributors. Throughout this program you will see their advertisements; many have been with us since year one. We hope that you will support their busi-nesses whenever you have the opportunity. Corporate generosity is the backbone of a thriving community-we are fortunate to have so many behind this show!

Finally, we thank everyone who volunteered their time or purchased a ticket to attend one of the events. Every contribution matters. We expect to raise over $100,000 for the benefit of the community during the course of these 3-day automotive extravaganza. Watch the SeeHotCars.com website in early November for the announcement of this year’s grant distributions.

Thank you for your continued generosity.

Concours du Soleil Grant ImpactLast year the proceeds from Concours were awarded to six nonprofit organizations. We always check in with our recipients to learn about the impact of those grant awards. Here is what we learned about three of our grants. And by the way, you helped. In Bernalillo County in 2011, the $10,000 Concours du Soleil grant supported Acción in providing 115 loans to deserving entrepreneurs. This translates to over $800,000 in financing creating almost 150 jobs into the hands of hard working entrepreneurs. Clients like Cherie Austin, the owner and creator of Farm & Table restaurant who received financing allowing them to create opportunity and hope. Operational support like this grant, allows Acción to provide loans to entrepreneurs to realize the dreams of successful small business ownership.

In 2011, WESST used the $10,000 Concours du Soleil grant to support its small business incubation program in Albuquerque. As a result of the con-sulting, training and access to capital services WESST provided to incubator clients, the program realized economic impact including 61 new jobs cre-ated by incubator companies who in turn generated total revenues of $9.5 million and a total payroll of $5.5 million.

UNM Lobo MotorsportsThe UNM Formulas Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) designed and built a race car that accelerates from 0 – 60 in four seconds. The group took part in the Formula SAE West Competition in Lincoln, Nebraska. UNM competed with 81 other engineering teams representing higher-learning institutions around the world. The UNM team finished 10th overall—the team’s best performance ever in the competition and earned 5th place in marketing presentation, 6th place in the endurance event, 12th place in the autocross event and 14th in design.

This year’s theme was inspired by the 2012 Super Bowl half-time commercial with Clint Eastwood, “Imported from Detroit”. You may remember it, Eastwood talked about the efforts American automobile manufacturers are making to fight back. He said soon the world would hear the roar of engines...built in Detroit.

American built automobiles date back to 1892, a horse buggy with a single-cylinder engine. In 1895, Ransom Eli Olds developed an internal combustion engine in his father’s machine shop in Lansing, Michigan. Seven years later he moved the Olds Motor Works Company to Detroit and introduced mass production of the popular Oldsmobile. With its low price, easy assembly, and stylish curved dashboard, this was the first car to be produced in quantity. Within a few years, automobiles had taken on the general configuration we know today.

In the early 1920’s Henry Ford would perfect the assembly line introducing the Model T, producing millions over a 20 year-period. The Model T literally put America on wheels.

Soon, closed-sedan bodies were built for family cars, sometimes even with the luxury of a heater. Engineering improvements brought a revolution in styling, fastbacks, grilled radiators, skirted fenders and aerodynamic styling like the 1936 Lincoln Zephyr that set styling that lasted for years.

The modern-car image got another boost in 1939, when Oldsmobile introduced the first fully automatic transmission -- all you had to do was put the shift lever in DRIVE, step on the gas and go. The American family car was never the same after that.

The V8 engine was introduced in the late ‘40s and the whole industry seemed to go crazy for performance, power, and luxury. Family cars were considered social prestige symbols in those days, so you needed a muscular engine to heft around all that chrome and sheet metal. The typical car weighed over 2 tons and packed 300 hp in a V8. 10 or 12 mpg tops!

2012 Featured Automobiles:The Magic of the MotorCity

Auto enthusiasts like to remember the 1960s for 400-hp factory “muscle cars” and there were some wild developments here. But it was also the decade when family automobiles were upgraded with such luxuries as air conditioning, power seats, power windows, individual bucket seats, automatic headlight dimmers and fold-down seats in station wagons.

The scene changed in the 1970s when the federal government began telling the companies how to design cars -- in the form of tight laws to control exhaust emissions, and new safety standards to improve highway crash survival. New regulations came almost faster than the engineers could keep track of them. When this trend was combined with the unexpected Arab oil embargo in 1973, the whole direction of auto design changed overnight. For several years in the mid-’70s, U.S. automotive design was in chaos.

However, Detroit has integrated traditional American luxury and gadgetry into smaller, lighter cars that can meet government and market requirements for fuel economy, and tomorrow’s car will make the best of it. According to Detroit, we haven’t seen anything yet!

Through our 2012 theme, Motorcars & Motown, the Magic of the Motor City, we tip our hats to Detroit built automobiles...we hear the roar of your engines.

P.S. We conducted a very scientific study (we surveyed Concours du Soleil car owners) to find out what they would consider to be the most iconic Detroit built automobile in history. 80% of respondents agreed it is the 1963 Corvette Split Window Coupe. That’s how we chose the car featured on the cover of this program and in this year’s show.

Owner: Dave MerewetherThis 7 passenger limousine has a V8 engine and has undergone a full restoration. Purchased at a Barrett-Jackson auction in 1992, it had been fully restored at that time. This is the typical family car for the affluent of the thirties.

1930 Nash

Owner: Bob AgnuNash Motors was founded in 1916 by former General Motors president Charles W. Nash who acquired the Thomas B. Jeffery Company. Nash’s slogan from the late 1920s and 1930s was “Give the customer more than he has paid for” and the cars lived up to it. 1954 Hudson Hornet coupeOwner: Jock FinleyThe Hudson Motor Car Company began building quality automobiles in 1909 and continued to do so until 1954. This Club Coupe was among the last to be built. Soon after, Hudson merged with AMC (American Motor Corp) ending the Hudson nameplate. The owner of

this car recently completed an all inclusive 7-year restoration project. The car was completely disassembled, cleaned, sand blasted, straightened, welded and treated for corrosion. Chrome and stainless trim were removed and repaired. In early 2011, the refurbished parts were ready for the reassembly but mechanical work was yet to be accomplished. The drive shaft was rebuilt, all new brake components, motor mounts, tires and wheels. All glass was replaced, the front compartment and door inner panels were sealed with sound deadening material. A new wiring harness was installed--the electrical system was converted from 6 volt to 12 volt. New custom upholstery was fabricated and installed including headliner. Both the front and back seat were rebuilt and recovered using high quality leather.

The History of Concours du SoleilThe car owners involved decided to formalize the show and model it after the infamous, “Concours d’Elegance” held in Pebble Beach each year.

1997Concours du Soleil began as an informal gathering of the New Mexico Viper Club displaying cars at a residence in Albuquerque’s northeast heights. It quickly grew attracting more owners and a bigger audience each year.

2004A “test-drive”. Organizers staged an informal Concours which proved to be a wonderful weekend. Everyone decided it was a good idea and ventured to plan something on a bigger scale and Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation agreed to be the beneficiary for the following year.

2005-2006Organized by Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation, the first Concours du Soleil was held at its current location in Los Ranchos. It encompassed a Saturday night gala and Sunday public show. Carrie Tingley would organize the show for two years when a conflicting fundraising event would preclude them from participating in 2007. All proceeds were donated to Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation.

2007-2009The Albuquerque Community Foundation is asked to take over the planning of the event. The Cinco Amigos Fund is established. Each year the weekend mirrored the previous year, a 2-day weekend in Los Ranchos. $100,000 in grants have been awarded through the Foundation The Cinco Amigos Endowment Fund grows to $90,000.

2011Organizers continue to mold the event, testing new ideas. A road rally and after party is added the day before the Saturday gala. The public show is moved from a full-day Sunday show at the gala location to a Saturday morning free public show on the Old Town Square.
