Ross Petrie, we honor you

The ski community lost a revered member re-

cently. Former King Winter Ross Petrie (1994)

passed away on July 25, 2012 after living his 85

years to the fullest. Ross was a member of the Mt. Hood Ski Patrol

and Past President in 1957. He was one of Mt.

Hood’s most active patrollers and mountain

climbers. Ross was a certified ski instructor for cross coun-

try and taught both Telemark and Multorpor Ski

Schools. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service

at both Timberline Lodge and Government Camp.

He was a member of the Wy’east Climbing Club,

Wolken Shiebers Trail Club and OSC Mountain

Club. Ross climbed Mt. Saint Helens at the age of 13

and he has summited Mt. Hood at least 50 times,

he met his wife of 60 years Charlene when he was

leading an Oregon State University climb of Three

Fingered Jack. There was an article in the Oregonian on January

8, 2012 that was titled “A 1947 Whodunit of

Hood” that told the story of Ross climbing up to

the Mt. Hood summit on August 17, 1947. He

delivered the Sunday paper and quart of milk to a

tent of some friends while they camped, then

climbed back down the mountain before being

discovered. They had no idea who pulled the

prank for several years! Ross you will be missed!

Yozsi(Yo-she) Kabdebo, Most Committed 87 year old American Ski Coach

The 87 year old Hungarian Jozsi Kabdebo, what a story! Yosh was a Freedom Fighter in Soviet-occupied

Hungary in 1956. He competed in Drag Racing, World Cup Soccer, and skiing, then joined the rebellion

against communism. During the revolution, Russians shot him. American forces airlifted him Dover

with Shrapnel in his back, but no doctor would operate on him for fear that it might lead to paralysis.

The only doctor that would do the surgery was at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Portland. After he recovered, he staying in Portland, married and had a son. He jumped on board with the local

Ski-Tek squad and at 87 still volunteers every winter weekend to the program, driving the van, drilling in

gates and tweaking techniques. When he speaks, he has his racers’ attention. He has coached hundreds

of people, taken in kids and been a legend on our mountain. He is currently running Yosh’s VW shop

where the team has met for the past 53 years for meetings. Please take the time to look him up! We

salute you!!!

A BIT OF TRIVIA: QUESTION:

What type of racing are you more likely to go over 100 Kilometers an hour?

ANSWER: Downhill. Slalom is the slowest but most difficult type of racing because the gates are very close

together. Giant Slalom or GS is faster and less turny. Super-G is one more step towards high

speed because there are less gates and more spread apart. DOWNHILL is the fastest!
