After a very excit-ing and eventful August including a

few beautiful ridge hikes, a little fishing, some berry picking and some travel-ing where I finally got a dose or two of sunshine by leaving Southeast Alaska, I am here and ready to settle into the fall season. I have mentally said farewell to summer and am pre-pared to start the fall adventures in the wind and rain and hopefully a little sunshine. I am

actually excited to see falling leaves because Southeast Alaska can produce a spectacular, though admittedly short autumn season. Fall in Juneau yields some of my favorite weather for out-

door activities. The autumn colors are vibrant and the weather is slightly cooler on sunny days, which is ideal for folks acclimated to Alaska’s colder climate. The weather is usually slightly breezier but still warm enough for a light shirt or a few layers and the

sunlight blankets everything in a golden hue. Along with the au-tumn weather, September in particular reminds me of the Klondike Interna-tional Road Relay race. Though I will

not be running in it this year, I have participated in the Klon-dike twice and enjoyed both very unique experiences. My racing occurrence has always been great, and everyone in-volved seems to have a cheer-ful demeanor. This year’s race marks the 30th year that this event has taken place and I want to take a moment and say good luck to all the rac-ers and thank you to all the volunteers who will be par-ticipating this year. And to everyone else, regardless to if you are Klondike or hik-ing bound, whatever your September and autumn ad-ventures may bring or exist of, I hope they are beauti-ful and full of unique ex-periences. After all it’s hard not to have beautiful and

unique adventure in Southeast Alaska.

Bauer/Clifton Interiors is an interior design firm located in Juneau, Alaska. Jeremy Bauer and Jason Clifton, the principals of Bauer/Clifton Interiors, are designers that share a passion for creating styl-ish, organic, and contemporary spaces.

This home had an original kitch-en from the early 80’s and was in desperate need of an updat-

ing; for both form and function! This project is a perfect example of how relocat-ing a few key elements of the layout can im-prove the over-all efficiency of a kitchen. The original layout had counter-tops that were “chopped up” and provided very little counterspace to work at, storage was minimal, and the overall aesthetic of the kitchen was dated and worn. We also determined that the use-less soffits located above the cabinets could award this kitchen some much needed long term storage, so these were promptly removed during the demoli-

tion phase. Relocating the refrigerator to a wall that was not currently being utilized and dedicating the original loca-tion of the fridge to more counterspace was a tremendous improvement as well. Switching the placement of the stove

with the sink created plenty of space on either side of both zones for prep-work, and the new sink location also allowed for a dishwasher to be placed to the

right of the sink as well. The new, centrally located range with built-in microwave drawer, is not only more func-tional but also serves as a dra-matic focal point for this kitchen; especially with the accent tile extending from

stovetop to ceiling! In order to achieve a high-end look, we encapsulated the Liebherr refrigerator with full height side panels & an upper cabinet and we also added a wood panel to the front of the dishwasher to create the look of built-in appliances. Sea-

foam green granite countertops and a glass mosaic backsplash were chosen to infuse some color into the space, while the espresso stained maple cabinetry- provided by Showplace Wood Products- and satin nickel hardware help complete

this contemporary design. To bring this kitchen to life, careful placement of lighting was chosen to ac-centuate the cabinetry while providing perfect task lighting. Under-cabinet lighting was then incorporated to fill in the shadows under the upper cabinetry. We believe lighting can make or break any project and this is one of the best elements to seek advice on layout. Home Maintenance

With fall just around the cor-ner there are certainly many things to look forward to in

Southeast Alaska. I enjoy fall because of hunting season, it’s a great time to take fish on a fly rod, and it reminds me to start planning for ski and hockey season. Fall is also a great time to prepare your home for the winter months and to get caught up on yearly maintenance items. This will be a two part series – Part I (in the August is-sue) focused on the home’s exterior main-tenance items and when they should be completed. This month’s focus is on inte-rior maintenance around the home. Next month, Part III will cover the mechanical systems of a home and the maintenance involved with those items.

Home maintenance will increase the life of your home as well as keep it healthy for all residents. With exterior maintenance I start at the top of the home and work my way down, I use the opposite approach

with interior maintenance; I start at the bottom and work my way up.

The lowest point and sometimes the most problematic spot in a home is the crawl-space. If your home does not have a crawlspace then you are already ahead of the game. How-ever, a lot of homes have crawl-spaces. Check the crawlspace for standing water on the ground. If there is standing water check to see if the sump pump is work-ing. If it is not working or there is not one present, look into get-ting the sump pump fixed, re-placed, or installed. A vapor barrier must be present on the ground of the crawl-space to keep unwanted moisture out of the home. A vapor barrier must be sealed properly for it to be effective in keeping moisture out of the home. Lastly, check the structure and joists to see that every-thing is dry. If you have a basement, it’s

important to check it in much the same way. Inspect the entire space for any mois-ture issues.

Moving up to the main parts of the home it is usually good to check ar-eas that have water sources in them, such as kitchens, bath-rooms, and laundry rooms. Check under sinks, around toilets, and around shower tub surrounds for signs of any damage. If you find any dam-age, find the source and what caused the damage. While in the bathrooms check and clean

the bathroom fan grill. The fan should be able to hold two-ply toilet paper to the grill when it is functioning properly.

When in the kitchen don’t forget to check under the refrigerator and the icemaker supply line. It is also wise to clean or re-place the grills of your kitchen hood vent.

Checking and cleaning the items in the kitchen and bathroom really don’t take much time. If they are performed twice a year, any problems that are found can usu-ally be fixed reasonably. Under all sinks throughout the home, check the supply water lines and replace them with braided stainless steel hoses. It’s also important to be aware of what is stored under your sink. I have often noticed a lot of poten-tially hazardous chemicals stored there and I would prefer to see those materials stored outside of the home or disposed of properly all together.

Some time should be spent in the laundry room. Check the supply lines to the wash-er. The supply line hoses are a place that commonly fail in a home and can cause thousands of dollars of damage. These hoses, like the bathroom hoses, should be the braided stainless steel hoses. The shutoff valves to the hoses should be func-tioning properly as well. Check the vent

to the dryer to make sure it is clean of lint buildup and that it’s sealed and ducted to the exterior of the home. If a dryer vent is not ducted to the exterior it will release gallons of water as a vapor into the air of your home each day.

Some of the miscellaneous items to check are the garage and windows of the house from the interior, since we have already checked the exte-rior. If the garage is attached to the home treat it like the home and make sure that all potentially haz-ardous items are stored properly or disposed of completely. Check for any water damage throughout garage. Check all the windows for signs of water intrusion and see if they are func-tioning correctly.

One of the last areas to check is the attic. Most of the attic can be checked from the access but sometimes it is wise to check all the under decking of the roof for signs of moisture if the roof is questionable. Not all water-damaged areas of an attic are caused by roof failures or problems.

Moisture can also find its way through the home and into the attic in vapor form and condense on the underside of a cool roof deck in colder temperatures. This con-densation can happen on a daily basis if the home humidity level is high enough and the roof deck is at dew point temperature. Another thing

to check in the attic is any vent ducting run through the attic. Make sure all ducting is sealed correctly and vented to the exterior. It will also be easy to see the insulation in the attic and if the insu-lation is in place or if it’s time to add more.

Set aside a rainy day in early fall to complete your indoor mainte-nance as most of these maintenance items usually only take a day or possibly a week-end to accomplish. Next month, I will provide a checklist for all the mechanical systems maintenance to help you main-tain a healthy, safe, and durable home.

I love the fall in Ju-neau. I know this is not a popular opin-ion but there are so many nice things about fall. I like the nip in the air and the way the under-growth suddenly dies down and the landscape of the trails around town changes. The eternal sum-mer debate - do I bring a coat,

do I not bring a

coat?- is laid to rest and I can move for-ward confidently sporting outerwear. I like the tourists better in the fall. The few tourists still loitering through town, usually huddled together under awnings, are more sympathetic figures than the hoards that swarm the streets in the summer.

My favorite thing about the fall though, is probably the food. It’s time to bring back hot cocoa and spiced cider. It’s time for pumpkin dishes and soup. And most importantly in our house-hold, it’s time to eat fresh deer steaks!

To say my husband is an avid hunter is a gross understatement. My husband

is obsessed with hunting. All year long he points out ridges and valleys in the mountains to me and tells me about what he thinks the deer are do-ing. We had his 30th birthday party at Cabella’s and we were there so late they locked the doors after us when we left. I’d like to believe that hunting is more cost effective than buying meat at the store, but when I take stock of all the expensive hunting gear in our house, I can tell you that this certainly is not the case. However, game meat is without a doubt healthier than store-bought meat so we try to eat it as often as possible.

Lately we’ve been enjoying deer jerky

made from the hindquarters, where you’ll find the most tender steaks of the buck. The meat is cut into thin strips and sea-soned with teriyaki sauce and red pep-per flakes. Then it’s set in the dehydra-tor for 7-8 hours. The jerky should be kept in the refrigerator in a Ziploc to retain its moisture. Last year we tried to freeze jerky but the quality went way down so we have resigned ourselves to eating the jerky within a few weeks of pro-cessing (if it lasts that long!)

My husband also re-cently spent the better part of a day grinding tougher, more sinewy meat into burger (cuts such as the neck, shoulders, and rib meat). This is a labor-intensive project, especially when you are dealing with a hand-crank grinder, but the final product is wonderfully versatile and holds up well in the freezer. We like deer burger not just for burgers but in lasagna, tacos, enchiladas and chili. It’s important, however, that the meat is thoroughly cleaned before it goes through the grinder, otherwise you will spend a lot of time stopping to clean the grinder. It is also worth your time to send the meat through the grinder twice. Noth-ing ruins a lasagna faster than biting into a hard chunk of…well, you’re not really sure what it may be.

The su-per star product of the hunt is of course the deer steaks. The tender loins, the smallest but most tender muscles of the deer make the best steak and eggs for morning-after breakfast. The all

around favorite is the backstrap, or loins, which run along the spine. The backstrap is best prepared me-dium-rare and with minimal ingredi-ents (salt and pep-per and olive oil). Be sure to remove the “silver skin” as it’s extremely tough; this simple but critical step.

My husband and daughter will eat the heart and liver as well, but I’m just not there yet. My husband usually cooks up the heart and liver on the day he returns from his hunt. The frying deer heart heats up our small house and an aromatic steam rises from the heaps of wet hunting gear strategically placed around the living room. Is there any-thing better than Juneau in the fall?!

When Southeast Alaska serves up one of the coldest, rainiest summers, it’s time to celebrate boots. Th e funny thing is even if you live in LA or Ve-

gas, pairing boots with party dresses, shorts, skirts, skinny jeans and paja-mas is everywhere.

So pick out a sporty, shape-hugging dress and pair it with tights and a rugged Frye boot, or slip into a lacey romantic dress and add a short, suede cowboy boot from Mustang.

It’s that time of year when Alas-kans (and wildlife too), are spending hours upon hours

harvesting berries in the hills woods and yards. While I won’t be divulging my sacred nagoon berry picking patch (R. arcticus or .R chamaemorus) I will tout our tamed and cultivated berry friend the Raspberry. While a great source of Vitamin K, Mag-nesium, Vitamin C, Manganese and Dietary Fiber, raspberries also contain Omega 3 and 6 Fatty ac-ids, who knew. As a member of the genus rubus, raspberries are in

the rose family and are believed to be brought to North America via the Bering Strait, so Alaska has wild strains but most of us have a garden area or fence line dedi-cated to the Chilliwack, Summit or Boyne variety. The UAF Co-operative Extension service recom-mends avoiding planting berries and grapes in areas where potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants (oxalic veggies) have grown within the past three years, in full sunlight and well-draining soil. I always add a few inches of bladder whack seaweed to my beds for the winter.

Don’t forget to harvest the leaves for teas and tinctures too!

When harvesting this year, wheth-er you freeze, jam or can save a few freshies out to add to a great salad dressing. I like pairing my greens with a creamy tart chevre (goat cheese), pecans or nuts preferably candied (sprinkled with a salt/sugar/spice mix and baked for 15 minutes), sliced red onions, with a cold Alaskan beer.

Raspberry Vinaigrette Recipe

Contributed by Amber King

Instructions:In a blender: add all ingredients (except pecans), and blend until fully smooth and creamy. If straining (or if using a whisk add all ingredients and then oil slowly to emulsify, strain and then return vinaigrette to blender and add pecans. Pulse through until pecans are well incorporated and mostly crushed, but still maintaining some texture, and add water to thin if desired.

Note 1: Depending on the sweetness of your ber-ries, and how much tang you enjoy in a vinai-grette, you can adjust the amount of red wine vin-egar you use. Start with ½ tbsp, then add the extra ½ tbsp if you think you’d like the extra acidity.

Note 2: Extra-virgin olive oil can be a little over-powering to the fruity flavor of the raspberries. So, either use a more neutral oil like walnut, or use extra-virgin olive oil (about 1 – 2 tbsp).

Note 3: I quite like the nutty sweet flavor of the pecans in this dressing. It’s not essential, but con-sider trying it, it adds another dimension that is very pleasant.

Note 4: If you are a stickler for not having seeds in the vinaigrette, strain through a fine sieve after blending. If using a high-powered blender (vita-mix), it pulverizes the seeds quite well, and there are not too many nibbly seeds noticeable. But, straining is still an option. If adding the toasted pecans, simply strain vinaigrette, return to blend-er, and then pulse through the pecans.

Ingredients

1 1/4 cup Fresh raspberries

1/2 - 1 tbsp Red wine vinegar (see below)

1/2 tsp Dijon mustard or Moosetard (ginger birch is my fav)

1/2 tsp Sea salt (little generous)

2 1/2 - 3 tbsp Pure maple syrup or honey (adjust to taste and sweetness of berries)

Freshly ground black pepper and kosher salt to taste

3 tbsp Walnut oil or other oil of choice (see below)

1/2 cup Toasted pecans (see below)

1 tbsp Water (to thin if desired)

I just launched a fundraiser for the start-up costs of a business that will then fundraise

for Juneau’s com-munity and charity projects. Yes, a fun-draiser for a fund-raiser.

The business will be called Halcyon Café, and it will raise money by sell-ing gourmet grilled cheese, and build-your-own; deli sandwiches, salads,

frozen yogurt, and cheese plates. And, of course, we’ll have tomato soup. The Café will also offer beverages; we’ll offer amaz-ing craft beers, a delicious variety of wines, a wide variety of non-alcoholic beers, espresso and coffee drinks, and Italian cream sodas. We will stay away from pro-cessed foods whenever possible, and will be knowledgeable as to where our ingredients

come from. Halcyon Café will be a very conscious business.

Halcyon Café will also offer classes. Yoga class-es will be offered in the evenings at 7, for those who get off of work later than most, as well as half hour classes at lunch time. You’ll be able to order your lunch on the way in-and scoop it up on your way out! We’ll have Kid’s classes in the afternoons, which will be ever-changing. Adults will be able to relax, enjoy a cup-of-joe, and each other’s company while the little ones has a blast.

And the do-gooder stuff, we’ll always be raising money for a specific char-ity or community project in Ju-neau. This will let donors (or, grilled cheese eaters), know exactly where their money is going, as well as educating the public on various issues in our community. Halcy-on will also offer free space to non-profits for board meetings and events, connect them with vol-unteers, and provide information about what they do.

We’ll be open mid-morning, until two hours before bar close. Halcyon Cafe will offer a place

where you can meet up with a friend, and

comfortably order a decaf latte at 10pm.

The bar will be scallop-shaped, so that you will face your friends or other patrons in-stead of a wall. There will be a long table (think European) echoing the scalloped shape behind it, encouraging patrons to meet one another. There will be booths on the other side, that are actually small comfy living room set-ups. Plants, flowers, maga-zines, board games, free books, vintage de-cor, a photo booth, and window seats with super soft pillows can be found throughout the café.

If this is a place that you think you might want to exist, please check out www.Ju-neauCharityCafe.com, for all of the details (there are a lot more). Click on “Invest-Get Rewards” to see what’s in it for you if you become an investor (of any size).
