A HORSE, A CHICKEN, AND A HARLEY

This goes out to all my biker buddiesDown on the farm lived a chicken and a horse, both of whom loved to play together. One day the two were playing, when the horse fell into a bog and began to sink. Scared for his life, the horse whinnied for the chicken to go get the farmer for help!

Off the chicken ran, back to the farm. Arriving at the farm, he searched and searched for the farmer, but to no avail, for he had gone to town with the only tractor. Running around, the chicken spied the farmer’s new Harley. Finding the keys in the ignition, the chicken sped off with a length of rope hoping he still had time to save his friend’s life.

Back at the bog, the horse was surprised, but happy, to see the chicken arrive on the shiny Harley, and he managed to get a hold of the loop of rope the chicken tossed to him. After tying the other end to the rear bumper of the farmer’s bike, the chicken then drove slowly forward and, with the aid of the

powerful bike, rescued the horse!

Happy and proud, the chicken rode the Harley back to the farmhouse, and the farmer was none the wiser when he returned. The friendship between the two animals was cemented: Best Buddies, Best Pals.

A few weeks later, the chicken fell into a Mud pit, and soon, he too, began to sink and cried out to the horse to save his life! The horse thought a moment, walked over, and straddled the large puddle. Looking underneath, he told the chicken to Grab his hangy-down thingy and he would then lift him out of the pit. The chicken got a good grip, and the horse pulled him up and out, saving his life.

The moral of the story?? (yep, you betcha, there is a moral!)

• Memorials. If a friend or family member recently died and you loved that person very much, you may want to consider getting that person’s name or portrait tattooed on your body. Every time you look down at that tattoo, you will be able to relive all of the good moments that you shared with that person.

• Celebration. You may want to get a tattoo to celebrate the birth of your child. You can get the name of your child or a portrait of your child tattooed on your body, along with the birth date of your child. You may not be appreciated for that tattoo when your child is young, but as he or she ages, your child will realize how much love you have to give.

• Special Events. Tattoos are a great way to commemorate special events that you have been a part of. Special events that may be worthy of a tat-too include getting married, receiving a big promotion at work or achieving a mile-stone in a hobby that you participate in.

• Spiritual Status. If you are a religious person, you may consider getting a tattoo that references your spiritual status. While it varies by religion, tattoos that contain the religious cross are very popular.

Bad Reasons for Getting a Tattoo• Your Boyfriend/Girlfriend

– Unless you’re married (or in some other committed relationship), don’t go getting Mary Beth’s name on your shoulder. Dating relationships have a 99.9% failure rate, so you’re against some pretty hefty odds. So, wait until there are rings on fingers before you start getting the tattoos, please.

• Your Favorite ‘Vice’ – This has got to be one of the dumbest tattoos ever conceived. I’m talking about the guys with the logo of their favorite beer or (worse yet) a big ass pot leaf or something. Getting a tattoo of these types of things will make you look like a dumbass. And if you actually get something like this, you probably are a dumbass.

• “I just really like the design” (a.k.a., No Reason at All) – Even if your tattoo is in reference to something stupid, at least it’s in reference to something. Tattoos that have absolutely no meaning whatsoever (I’m looking at you, guy-with-tribal-band) are, to say the least, not recommended.

Reasons to Get a Tattoo (and Reasons Not To)

...and some other entries“Catch Tamii” Winner

playing guitar. Michelle Branch is also from

Arizona and I love her unique voice. She inspires

me because the fact that she made it big, leads

me to think that I may be able to make it big one

day as well. Alanis Morissette never hides

anything in her lyrics and I love how she puts her

heart into her songs. Her writing style and her

boldness has inspired me.

IF YOU COULD JAM WITH ANYONE ALIVE OR

DEAD WHO WOULD IT BE?

I think it would have been awesome to have had

the opportunity to jam with The Beatles during

their sitar phase.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE "CHEESY" SONG OF

ALL TIME?

I would have to say my favorite ’’cheesy’’ song is

Don’t Stop Believing by Journey. Everyone knows

the words so it’s always fun to sing, not to

mention, I think it’s a great song.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY AT

IN AZ?

Any one that they’ll let me play at! But in all

honesty, Libations was a cool venue to play at

because it’s on the west side of the valley and it

had a very chill atmosphere.

WHATS YOUR POISON/DRINK OF CHOICE?

Heineken is usually my go-to beverage of choice.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE BEST

SONG YOU PERFORM?

Destiny is my favorite song. I originally wrote the

song to cheer myself up when I felt that things

weren’t going my way. I find it to be an uplifting

song for anyone to hear though.

WHERE ARE YOUR GIGS FOR THE NEXT

YOUR NAME AND/OR THE NAME OF YOUR

BAND: Sara Moody

INSTRUMENT YOU PLAY: Guitar

Briefly describe your band/music: My music has a

pop/folk/alternative sound. However, my words

cannot adequately describe my music. Come and

hear it for yourself!

HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU LEARNED

TO PLAY AND WHO INSPIRED YOU?

I first started to learn guitar when I was 15 years

old. My father had bought me a blue Fender

Squier for Christmas that had matched my hair at

the time. Michelle Branch and Alanis Morissette

have been inspirations to me since before I started

MONTH?

I currently do not have any gigs planned within the

next month because I just started working a

full-time job, but if anyone knows any places that

have open mic nights on a Friday or Saturday, let

me know!

DO YOU HAVE A STORY ABOUT YOUR BEST

SHOW EVER?

I have opened for the last four Annefests and

every one of those has been the best.

WHATS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT

BEING A MUSICIAN?

My favorite thing about being a musician is being

able to take a blank page and fill it with a song. I

believe that art in it’s truest form is creating

something out of nothing.

DO YOU READ TABLE TALK AND DART STARR

NEWSPAPERS?

I honestly don’t read printed newspapers. I get a

lot of news and information online, although I

would like to start reading more newspapers.

DO YOU PLAY PRIVATE PARTIES AND ARE

to do so and I am available for booking.

HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU LEARNED

TO PLAY AND WHO INSPIRED YOU?

Age is just a number. Learning to play is an

ongoing process, if you allow it. Inspiration is just

Kalamazoo at a hippie convention when the Irish

bagpipe player wanted an-- oh, wait, briefly. Right.

Sorry. Um, really it was Wink Martindale.

IF YOU COULD JAM WITH ANYONE ALIVE OR

DEAD WHO WOULD IT BE?

ALL TIME?

My entire discography.

LUCKY ME! Yes, lucky you, times are tough for everyone but if you look around you may find some quick relief, one of those is Lucky Gold & Silver Exchange. If you’re like me you probably got broken chains, rings, bracelets and god only know what laying around your home, now I personally don’t wear much jewelry anymore but I too have it laying around, I might be surprised at how much it’s worth.

So, if you’re running a little short of cash this month or whenever, sack up that old jewelry and take down to Jim at Lucky Gold, he will give you an honest appraisal of what you have. Jim has been in the same location for quite some time now so that should say something about him.

Jim has told me that so many people have ask him about jewelry and why he doesn’t sell the good pieces he buy from his clients, so after a few years and some provoking from others he has decided to do just that. I was impressed at what he has done with his shop at 35th Ave and Northern (SE) side of Northern. If you have special occasion coming up or you’re just trying to get in good with your lady or mate stop in and check him out. He also has a jeweler on staff, so if you have any broken jewelry, just bring it on down. I checked out his prices and ended up buying a few pieces myself. Don’t forget the holidays are coming, and now is the time to start looking. Get more for your money buy now.

Billiard Origin

The origin of all billiard games is an outdoor game similar to croquet, used to be played in France on the 14th century. Due to the game popularity among royalty as well as common people and thanks to the capriciousness of the European weather, the billiard game was born as an indoor game. Billiard was played on a table covered with green felt in order to resemble the lawn on which the ancestor game was played.

Billiard and the Law

The billiard game was outlawed for many years and in different countries: still at the early days of billiard, the game was accused of being immoral. Therefore, this faulty activity and its devoted players were chased by the Church. On the early history

of American billiards, when the term “pool room” was still a synonym for horse betting parlor, the game was illegal in many states. Even Thomas Jefferson had to hide a billiard table in his residency.

1st World Championship

Nevertheless, the first world championship in sports history was the 1873 World Billiards Championship. William Cook won the title. John Roberts was the runner up.

Billiard and Celebs

Other historic celebrities who had owned a billiard table include King Louis XI and Mary the Queen of Scots (whose billiard table cloth was used by her assassins as cerements). Captain Mingaud, whose responsible for inventing the leather cue

tip, had a billiard table in his prison cell.

Pool halls History

The first public pool hall in history was built in England during the end of the 18th century. The pool hall featured one billiard table with one pocket. The biggest pool hall in history was built in Detroit in the 1920s; it featured more than 100 tables in addition to an exhibition room attached to a 250-seats theatre hall.

Billiard’s French Origins

The term “billiard” is derived from the French word for mace – billiart. Before the cue stick was invented (the term “cue” also has French origins. Queue, is tail in French), a wooden mace with a handle, similar to a tail, was used to shoot the balls. For a long period after the cue stick invention,

only men were allowed to use it; women billiard players were automatically accused of misusing the cue and ripping the table cloth.

Billiard’s 1st Female Champion

The first woman who won in World Billiard Champion was actually a man. The woman billiard champion, who was known by the name of Frances Anderson and for outplaying (almost) every man and woman in both the American and European billiards world throughout the first centuries of the 20th century, came out as a man that was born under the name of Orie and created quite a stir on the 1920s b i l l i a r d s circle.

REX’S SALOONA Touch of the Old West

Rex’s saloon located at 24202 w mc 85 in Buckeye has a small hometown vibe. The woodwork on the walls, the railroad tie foot rest and the wood bar top makes the old west come back to life. The staff is friendly and the drink prices are reasonable.

We are a biker friendly establishment. Next time you drive on by stop in and say hello. We are interested in becoming a stop for pool tournaments and bike runs. If you know anyone that can help with that please give us a call at 623-386-2340.

The insurance industry today spends millions of dollars in TV and print ads telling the general public that they can save you “hundreds of dollars” over your current insurance rates if you just “give them a call”. Well let me tell you, various insurance companies can, and will probably save you hundreds of dollars a year in premiums, but at the expense of having the proper coverage and the right amount of coverage. Let me explain:

The State of Arizona mandates that each and every driver carries $15,000 per person in liability insurance for a total of $30,000.00 per accident, as well as $10,000.00 in property damage coverage. This means that if you pull a bone head move, your insurance carrier will pay the injured party up to $15,000.00 for the injuries you cause and a total of $30,000.00 if there is more than one injured party. It also means it will cover up to $10,000.00 of property damage you cause. Most people think this is “Full Coverage”. WRONG!

If you are in an accident that is someone else’s fault and they have the above coverage or none at all, and you sustain injuries or property damage that exceeds the State of Arizona’s mandatory minimum, then you’re simply out of luck UNLESS you carry Uninsured and Underinsured (UM/UIM) Coverage. This is how the companies save you money. They talk you out of having what I

consider the most important part of insurance coverage, that being UM/UIM.

I recommend liability limits of at least $100/300,000.00 and matching UM/UIM limits. The money you save in not having this extra layer of protection is nothing compared to what you will experience if you’re involved in an accident, especially on a motorcycle, and spend a couple of days in the hospital.......or worse! The average damage claim in my office in a bike accident is $100,000.00. If you get involved with someone with the above mentioned coverage and do not have UM/UIM coverage that’s all you get. No way around it.

The insurance industry does not like to write UM/UIM coverage because what in essence they are doing is insuring you for the mistakes of others unknown to them. They don’t make money on the unknown risks other drivers pose to you, and the premiums they charge. When they write your liability coverage, they know they are insuring you and have done the proper investigation to set the premium amounts, unlike UM/UIM premiums.

The bottom line is do not let anyone talk you out of Uninsured and Underinsured coverage just to save a few bucks and beat the other companies prices. If you do, you’ll be sorry when some idiot turns left in front of you and says “I just didn’t see him”!

Well, here we go again. I have covered this m a t e r i a l before but re p e t i t ion is the key to success. We are all

in this thing, called life, together. If we are going to make a go of it we will all have to work together, whether we like it or not. This great nation of ours has always put its petty differences aside, at times of great strife, and come together to make things work out. After the task is over, we go back and pick up these differences and go back to business as usual.

What would happen, if just once, we left them alone and just went on working as one. Can you imagine what we could really accomplish if we tried. We should try it just once. We, as a people, have proven over and over that we can overcome any adversity if we only pull together. We should learn from our prior efforts. A Chinese proverb states; “The gem can not be polished without friction, nor man perfected without trials.”

We, as a sporting society, should follow this example as a whole. The only thing that ever gets in the way is personal gain and ego. Trust me when I tell you that there is enough to go around here in Phoenix. Leagues here in the valley have been fighting with each other for as long as I can remember.

It is time to stop and figure out what that kind of thinking has accomplished. The answer is obvious, nothing. With all the infighting, we have forgotten the main factor in all of this, the player. What kind of example do we put out there for our players as a model to use for their growth. We want our sport to grow but we keep giving the young new comers a very bad path to follow, one of failure. We have to put a better picture out there and show these new additions to our sports that we are more interested in the growth of the sport than we are of our own receipts. We have the ability, so let’s get to work on making these people know that we are interested in them. If the industry grows, do we not all benefit?

I have played for the APA, BCA, local in house leagues and now the UPA. They all have their place and fill a different need in the players. Let’s get it together and help one another and make it better for everyone. The players may get the idea and start trying to help the bar owners and league operators instead of trying to see what they can get from them in the way of prizes and money. Guys, they need us as much as we need them. We have got to have each other or NO ONE WINS.

I’ll be back next month, y’all come.

NO AMOUNT TOO SMALL

CHEERS TAVERN - At the time of this article Cheers Tavern has been open now for 54 days, so I thought it would be a good time to revisit Leesa & Tim the new owners of Cheers Tavern. When I asked Leesa & Tim how their first couple months of being open has been, they were just as excited as the first week when I spoke to them. ‘Awesome, really awesome’, they both replied. They have had a great time meeting new customers and building new relationships. ‘I truly love chatting and getting to know people…I enjoy hearing what they think about the new Cheers, but I also enjoy hearing all the stories about the old Cheers. People have been very positive about the changes we’ve made and although they were very fond of the old Cheers, everyone has been very receptive to the new Cheers.’ Leesa went on to say that she is surprised how fast that customers have become ‘regulars’, which she thought was flattering, since there are so many other bars around.

As I mentioned in my first article about Cheers Tavern, it’s new, laid out well and it’s clean, really clean, so what’s not to love? I asked Leesa & Tim what they do to attract and keep their patrons coming back, they both agreed that providing their customers with a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, while treating them with respect and making them feel appreciated was their top priority - When you walk into Cheers you are greeted with a smile and a hello, we want our customers to feel truly welcome. As we talked, Leesa & Tim expressed their satisfaction with how the bar was coming along.

They swore me to secrecy before they would tell me about their Happy Hour Specials – WOW! I think I’m going to become a regular here too! All I can say without being shot is: Happy Hour is from 10am - 6pm Monday thru Friday…BUT you MUST go in and ask Rhonda about the “Grandfathered Rule & also the Happy Hour Loyalty Club”. It’s no wonder why Cheers has built a regular customer base so fast.

Tim noticed me staring at a mountain of Nachos that went by and smiled, ‘looks good huh? We have had nothing but praise about our food, we have some amazing cooks and for a little bar we have some awesome food. Everyone loves the deep fried Cheers Burger - some have even said it was the best burger they ever had,’ which you can tell pleases Tim. With football season starting next week Cheers has put together a special menu just for football and the wing specials during football games are unbelievable. (I promised I wouldn’t print the price in this article) Tim stated he’s really excited about the upcoming football season since they have ESPN GamePlan for all the college football fans and NFL Sunday Ticket for all the NFL games. Monday Night, Thursday Night, Saturday AND Sunday mean Cheers is

going to be the place to be this football season. Cheers is NOT a designated team bar like so many other bars are, so ALL football fans are welcome. Each one of the Plasma HDTV’s and the huge 80” LED/HD TV all have their own DirecTV receiver, that way each TV can have on a different College or NFL game. The food & drink specials are the perfect compliment for a great game day. Even though the games are going on, they will still have two TV’s dedicated to NASCAR every Sunday. Again, they have another special for football that I can’t print, but let’s just say it has something to do with Touchdowns and really cheap beer!! (You’ll have to get all the details when you visit)

Tim is still holding Blind Draw Dart Tournaments every Sunday ~ except due to football, he has pushed back the start time to 5PM. Cheers didn’t want the dart players to feel neglected, so they bumped up the payback to 300% - That’s a nice payday for someone on a Sunday afternoon. They also mentioned that Cheers is still looking for more pool players for leagues and Medalist dart league players as well, so if you’re interested in playing on a pool or dart team for Cheers please talk to Leesa or Tim.

Friday & Saturday night are Ultimate Karaoke and draws quite the crowd I’m told. There have been lots of requests to add Wednesday night to the Ultimate Karaoke schedule. Guess your wondering what “Ultimate Karaoke” is? Well, I did too, but I’m told that while someone is singing a song, the music video for that song is playing on several of the TV’s…so you get that Rock Star feel. Tim said, ‘having the music video playing while they are singing has been a huge hit with the Karaoke crowd since nobody else does it, we are the first. Even veteran Karaoke hosts were impressed by the pairing of the two.’

With all the football, karaoke, promos and such, Cheers still has an interesting lineup every night of the week: Moonshine & Monday Night Football, Trailerhood Tuesday - $2 Tall Boy PBR’s, Cornhole Tourneys, & Adult Sex Trivia, Whiskey Wednesday & Karaoke, Thirsty Thursday & Football, Sunday thru Thursday 6pm -2am S.S.I.N. ~ Student & Service Industry Night - $2 Domestic & Well.

It’s very clear to me why Cheers Tavern is becoming the talk of the town…with Leesa & Tim’s attitude towards their customers and all the great specials Cheers has to offer, I stand by my comments from my first article. Cheers Tavern is becoming the hotspot on Bell Rd in Glendale and will continue to be for a long time to come.

Cheers to Cheers!

This year’s term was Political Correctness. The winner wrote:

“Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”
