I would like to commend Newark and Suburban
Trustee Ronald Weston, AIA for his commitment as
Chair of the Professional Practice Committee in
2012. He has taken on his
position this year with a sense of responsibility to
provide our members with insightful thoughts in each
month’s Rostrum on what
i t takes to be a professional. I echo his
sentiment in the August 2012 Rostrum - as
professionals, we have the responsibility to understand
the macro and micro
economics of our industry. U n d e r s t a n d i n g t h e
economic world that affects you will enable you to
better plug into a market

Sad to see the summer coming to an end, but I
look forward to the events
the AIA has planned for us in September. AIA-NJ is
holding the Design Day Conference this year at the
Berkeley Hotel in Asbury Park, NJ on Thursday
September 13th.
I encourage Newark and Suburban members to
attend. It is a great venue and an opportunity to see
friends and colleagues from
other sections. The list of speakers is as impressive
as their topics. Personally, I am intrigued by the
guided tour of the refurbished Asbury Park
boardwalk. It is an all-day
event capped by a reception where the
winners of the design c o m p e t i t i o n a r e
announced . Mo re
information as well as the opportunity to register are
located on the AIA-NJ
business. Lastly, as a follow-up from
last month’s message
where I reported on the AIA’s response to USGBC’s
request to sign a letter to the GSA calling for the
continued use of LEED, a response was prepared by
Robert Ivy, FAIA, AIA
National Executive Vice President/Chief Executive
Officer. I applaud Mr. Ivy for being proactive and
responding accordingly to
the GSA. The letter is available for you to read in
its entirety at the AIA Advocacy Website: http://

The American Institute of Architecture Students at the
New Jersey Institute of
Technology (AIAS NJIT) will be hosting the semi-annual
AIAS Northeast Quad Conference this October in
Newark, New Jersey! As current Architecture
students, we have an invested interest in what our
world will become in 5, 10,
even 20 years from now. It is our mission to showcase the
p o t e n t i a l o f u r b a n environments, like Newark,
and look forward to a progressive future.
This four day conference will focus on what we need to do
as designers, planners and
architects in order to strengthen the urban fabric
in which we thrive. Hundreds of students and professionals
alike will gather to discuss
current and relevant issues in the profession and to
understand how we can make these known to the
general public. It will be
supported by groups like the Project for Public Spaces who
will be sending their president, Fred Kent, to
speak on their behalf as our Keynote Speaker. To
reinforce the message, there will be workshops, tours, and
discussions all focused
around the theme of R e v i t a l i z a t i o n . T h e
conference will also provide networking opportunities for
students and professionals. The conference will host
events such as Portfolio Reviews and Firm Crawls to

architects. Join us from October 18th to

I just realized that next month will be the start of my
fortieth year as an AIA member. I last wrote about
an AIA anniversary, when I
served as President of AIANJ. I stated at the time that it
was going to be a special year and it was, because we
celebrated the 150th anniversary of OUR
professional organization. AIANJ’s contribution,
organized by Stacey Ruhle
Kliesch, AIA, was to introduce architecture to 150
different 6th grades around the state. Late last year
under the guidance of Philip S. Kennedy-Grant, FAIA we
finished and delivered in a most beautiful book, a list of
150 BEST buildings and
places in the Garden State. Many of our members
contributed to both of these projects.
While we have experienced
various degrees of setback in the four or five years since
then, due mostly to the downturn in the economy,
OUR AIA is still here to serve the membership. The
membership has experienced lower numbers and as such,
shrinking revenue
capabilities. I need not tell you that without revenue we
are hard pressed to provide OUR educational programs
for those who remain members. These same
programs will also help us attempt to entice former
members to come back into
the organization.
AIANJ is made up of six local
sections and as such, a lot of what happens because of the
effort of our local
leadership. This could not be more true here in my
home section of AIA Newark
and Suburban Architects.
There is a new generation of leaders, some in fact that
may not have even been born when I joined AIA back
in 1972! In my visits around
the Chapter and at Chapter events, I find this as a
positive and though we have experienced some hard
times, the hard work of a few has and continues to
deliver to many.
The AIA is poised to realign the Institute in the next few
months, and as just a small part of your national
leadership, I will be meeting in New Mexico with the
remainder of leadership to
contribute ideas of to make the AIA BIGGER, and most
important, BETTER for all of us. So stayed tuned and
even if you have only been a member for a few years, be

be entering for the first time
or after having not submitted recently. And as
always we look forward to seeing the great work of
our loyal member firms that enter projects every year.
My fellow Co-Chair from the Architects League, Stacey
Ruhle Kliesch, tells me that
her section’s members are excited about the joint
event, and so we are expectig a fine display of
our two sections’ work. And the presidents of the other
AIA New Jersey Sections are all looking forward to
serving as our jurors,
helping to make this year’s event a real all New Jersey
affair. The Design Awards are
open to all members of our two sections, including
Associate AIA members. For the submission, the
NS / AL member should
have played a primary role in the project, such as
project designer or project manager. Projects may
date from any period of a member’s career, and
projects that have been
previously submitted but were not awarded may be
entered again. Please visit the Newark and Suburban
web site for complete submission rules and
requirements. I encourage all of our
Section’s members to show
off your work. So, be sure to mark October 11 for the
opportunity to see the work of our member firms while
enjoying live music and delicious food and drink in
the company of your AIA colleagues.
Please feel free to contact
me with any questions and comments. If you are
planning to participate and submit work, please e-mail
me to assist in our planning for the event. I would also
like to mention we are in the process of setting up
drop-off sites for the boards
and will be announcing the sites shortly.

Design Awards 2012 With August and the
summer winding down, this is your friendly reminder
that the 2012 Newark and Suburban Design Awards
are a little over a six weeks away. This year’s Design
Awards will be a joint event with the Architects League
to be held October 11 from
6 – 9:30 pm at the Hamilton and Ward Steakhouse in
Paterson. We have moved the Design
Awards out of September, which is always crowded
with Labor Day, the return of school, and religious
holidays as well as the AIA
State Design Day. This gives all our member firms
the entire month of September to put project
boards together. Please visit our AIANS web site for
some presentation tips as we l l a s a l i s t o f
photographers and print
houses that members have used and recommend.
As Chairperson, I am excited to report that quite
a few of our Newark and Suburban member firms will
