Election Procedures for Board Members

Attention owners!!! The 2011 elections are just around the corner!

One Director Position is open for this election. Current Director Bill Deal was elected in 2008 to a three-year term and is up for reelection. Therefore, we need interested owners to toss their hats into the ring for the 2011 election at Stone Ridge!

The following procedure was established by the Board of Directors at the June 21, 2005 meeting for the election of homeowner Board members.

Declaration of Candidacy

• Solicit candidates via the newsletter and SRNet at least 30 days prior to the annual meeting

• Candidates for the Board of Directors must declare their intent to run, in writing, no later than 5 p.m. on October 3, 2011 with the submission of a half page, single-spaced typed resume/biography to the Association office stating their intent to run.

• In conjunction with the written declaration to run, Candidates for the Board of Directors must complete a petition form with at least three signatures and return the petition to the Association office.

• Nominations from the floor may be accepted pursuant to Section 3.5(b) of the Bylaws.

Ballot Format • Candidates’ names will be placed on the

ballot in alphabetical order. • Ballots will be printed on one sheet.

Copies of the biographies will be included with the ballot.

• Each ballot will include name, signature, address, and a statement that it is only valid if signed. A space will be provided for the voter’s signature.

may be cast until the opening of the Annual Meeting by mail or hand-delivered to the Association office. Votes may also be cast at the Annual Meeting.

• Winning candidates will be announced at the Annual Meeting.

More information about electronic voting will be published in the October issue of Etched in Stone.

Parents, be mindful of the traffic flow on streets surrounding our schools, especially Mercer Middle School. The safest location to drop kids is at the drop off zone of the east side entrance of Mercer Middle. Mineral Springs and Greenstone Drive are busy streets and we need to keep traffic flowing. Let’s work together to have a safe school year!

Fall Lawn Fertilization in Virginia

By: J.M. Goatley Jr., D.R. Chambers, J.R. Hall III, and R.E. Schmidt

Fertilization of lawns is essential for the production of quality turf in Virginia. However, exceeding recommended fertilizer application rates or improper application timing can negatively impact surface water and groundwater quality. A well-planned and environmentally sound turfgrass fertilization program will take into account:

• Inherent soil fertility • Nutrient source characteristics • Desired turfgrass quality or performance • Nutrient application rate • Application frequency • Season of application • Application method

Selecting a Fertilizer- Fertilizers are used to improve or maintain turfgrass quality. The value of a fertilizer depends upon the total amount of nutrients and the source of nitrogen in the fertilizer.

Seasons of Application (When to Apply) - Proper timing of nitrogen applications is different for warm-season and cool-season turfgrasses. The best time to fertilize cool-season grasses in Virginia is from August 15 through November.

Lot Inspections The annual lot inspection project started in March. Section 3 is currently under review with 14 out of 25 (56%) homes sited for violations for the month of June. Staff will be conducting lot inspections in Section 3, 2 and 44 in August.

Each lot is inspected to make sure that the home is in compliance according to Community Code No. 1, Design and Maintenance Standards. Owners are encouraged to submit applications for all exterior changes and improvements. Owners can submit applications now and be in compliance before the lot inspection. Also note that not having an application on file can slow down the re-sale process.

The Mission of the Annual Stone Ridge 5K:

• To help find necessary improvements for local schools in the Dulles south area.

• To stage a showcase event that appeals to the interests and expectations of new residents and people moving into the Dulles South area.

• To foster relations between the local business community and local schools in Loudoun County.

2011 Stone Ridge 5K in Support of Dulles Public Schools: We look forward to supporting each of our local schools this year. Donations to the schools are solely based on participation by either runners, walkers, or the volunteers associated with each school. While our schools are blessed with fantastic teachers and are exemplary in many respects, the sheer growth of our area has created a delay in the delivery of critical elements. High-tech teaching equipment, athletic facilities, and other areas are in need of your help, and your support will make an immediate and lasting difference in our children’s educational experience.

The Main Event: The Stone Ridge 5K is U.S. Track and Field certified and ChampionChip timed. Flat and fast, the course holds an opportunity for both runners and walkers of all levels. This event will be marketed heavily to the traditional running audience via print advertising in the Washington Running Report, various local papers, and the internet. We will also be making a pointed appeal to first time runners and casual runners through a grass-roots marketing effort in the fast growing developments and communities in Loudoun County.

We are pleased to announce the involvement of the area’s leading race management organization, The Capital Running Company. The Capital Running Company will manage the pre-race, race day, and post-race services for the 2011 Stone Ridge 5K. This includes reporting the results of the race to the local media on race day and posting complete race results in the Washington Running Report (www.runwashington.com). We look forward to engaging your support as we raise money for our local schools. Utilizing the race proceeds, we seek to supplement the resources, facilities, and equipment for our fast-growing schools in the Dulles South area.

August Seal Coating Completed- Thank You!

Thank you to the residents in Sections 43, 44, 45, and 46 for your patience during the August seal coating project. The weather cooperated (for the most part) and now our streets look fresh and clean! We know it was an inconvenience, but it is important for the Association to seal coat Stone Ridge private streets according to the Reserve study to extend the life of the asphalt. The next scheduled seal coating is in five years. Again, thanks for your understanding and cooperation!

House Fire in Stone Ridge

On Sunday, July 31, 2011, the Brann Family home on Cordgrass Circle caught on fire after their propane grill exploded. Susan Brann and her family were not injured in the fire; however, the house was deemed a total loss.

As many Stone Ridge residents may remember, Robert Brann (husband of Susan Brann) died suddenly on August 13, 2009. Robert was an active community member and the Chair of the Covenants Committee at Stone Ridge. Along with losing many of their material possessions in the fire, the Brann Family also lost many photos and mementos of Robert.

In an effort to help assist the Brann Family through this difficult time, Stone Ridge residents Maureen Bradham and Traci Wilson have set up a Facebook group entitled “Help the Brann Family”. The group asks for donations in the form of gift cards or monetary contributions to assist in purchasing items that the family needs immediately. Maureen Bradham also set up a social fundraising page on Facebook. Donations can be made via PayPal or credit card by visiting http://goo.gl/wg95s.

Contributions can also be dropped off at the Stone Ridge Association office between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Stone Ridge Association is located at 24609 Nettle Mill Square.

Please make all checks payable to Susan Brann.

For further information regarding specific donation items, visit the Facebook group.

Reminders

Grilling Do’s and Don’ts: Good grilling weather continues into the fall months. In order to keep you and your family safe while grilling, please follow these do’s and don’ts.

Propane Grill Do’s: • Always use the grill outdoors in a well-ventilated area. Always

follow all the manufacturer’s instructions and keep written materials and manuals in a safe, accessible place.

• Make sure the grill burner controls are turned off and keep the cylinder valve closed when not in use.

• Always use or store cylinders in an upright, vertical position. Be sure to store them outdoors away from sources of ignition (i.e. heat, matches, or lighters).

• After filling, take the cylinder home immediately. While transporting, keep the vehicle ventilated with the cylinder valve closed and plugged or capped.

• Open the grill lid (cover) prior to doing anything else. This ensures that no gas vapors are released into a closed space once the flow of gas starts. Keeping the grill cover open allows any breeze to vent propane gas vapors to the atmosphere.

• Use a leak-detection solution to check all connections for tightness.

Propane Grill Don’ts: • Do not bring cylinders indoors or into an enclosed space such

as a garage • Do not smoke while handling the propane cylinder • Do not use matches or lighters to check for leaks • Do not allow children to tamper or play with the cylinder or grill

Election Signage Reminders

With November General Elections drawing closer, please keep the Stone Ridge Guidelines in mind regarding political signage.

Community Code No. 1, Stone Ridge Design and Maintenance Standards, Page 52 states: “No more than three political campaign election signs are allowed. These signs must be removed immediately after the election.”

If you have any questions regarding political signage, please call the Stone Ridge Association office at 703-327-5179.

Fall Flower Bulb Planting Tips

Flower bulb planting is a job for crisp, sunny fall days. All spring-flowering bulbs need a period of cold to flower well. For best quality, pick large bulbs and plant them as soon as possible.

Flower bulb planting instructions: 1. Dig a hole or trench large enough for several bulbs. 2. Bulb size dictates how deep to plant. As a rule, plant large bulbs

about 8 to 12 inches deep, and set smaller bulbs 4 to 6 inches deep.

3. Space large bulbs 3 to 6 inches apart and small ones 1 to 2 inches apart. 4. Cover bulbs with soil and water generously. Later, when the

ground cools you can apply 2 to 3 inches of mulch to the surface. 5. At planting time, you don’t need to apply fertilizer, as the

bulbs have already been fattened up for bloom. However, for bulbs that will stay in place for a number of seasons, enrich the soil in the planting area with good organic compost or well-rotted cow manure worked into the soil when planting.

After carefully following these steps, in just a few short months when spring arrives, you will be able to enjoy one of Mother Nature’s most beautiful gifts- blooming flowers!

Pick Up After Your Pets

Stone Ridge is a beautiful community that provides pet waste stations to dispose of your pet’s waste properly. Please be courteous and scoop the poop. No one likes to have to dodge when they are on a nice walk or find that they accidently stepped in pet droppings. To assist with the clean-up of your pet, the pet stations are stocked with plastic bags. You may also want to carry your own each time you walk the dog.

Members or guests who walk their pets on Community Property are required to comply with Loudoun County registration and leash laws. Pet owners must register pets over four months old with the County. Owners/walkers must (1) keep pets on a leash in public and (2) immediately pick-up all droppings. Also, remember that pets are not permitted in or on the lawns, sidewalks, or parking areas surrounding the Community Center/Recreation Center buildings or the amphitheater stage or seating area.

Loudoun County Ordinance 612.19(9) states: DOG WASTE, For the owner of any dog to fail to remove immediately the dog’s feces from any property that is located: In any residential subdivision; or, adjacent to such residential subdivision, except: No action shall be brought under this paragraph for failure of a dog owner to remove the dog’s feces from the premises of the dog owner, notwithstanding any contrary provision of law. This exception shall not apply to the common areas of a homeowner’s association, condominium, or apartment complex (Ord. 88-18. Passed 12-19-88).

Where, Oh Where

Has my trash toter gone? Oh where, oh where could it be?

Please remember to bring your trash toter in and store it properly out of plain view after trash pick-up. Toters must be stored in the garage or trash enclosure for single family homes and in either the garage or trash ‘cubby’ in townhouses. As stated in the Amended & Restated Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions, Article 10.2(i) “trash containers shall not be permitted to remain in public view from Community Area or another lot except on days of collection”

After obtaining HOA approval for your improvement, contact Loudoun County to see if your modification

Kids, the School Bus, and YOU

For twenty three million students nationwide, the school day begins and ends with a trip on a school bus. The greatest risk is not riding the bus, but approaching or leaving the bus. Before children go back to school or start school for the first time, it is essential that adults and children know traffic safety rules.

Drivers • When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch out for children walking

or bicycling to school. • When driving in neighborhoods with school zones, watch out for young people

who may be thinking about getting to school, but may not be thinking of getting there safely.

• Slow down. Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in neighborhood.

• Slow down. Watch for children playing and congregating near bus stops. • Be alert. Children arriving late for the bus may dart into the street

without looking for traffic. • Learn and obey the school bus laws. Learn the “flashing signal light system” that

school bus drivers use to alert motorists of pending actions: • Yellow flashing lights indicate that the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload

children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles. • Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate that the bus has stopped, and that

children are getting on or off. Motorists must stop their cars and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop sign is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again.

Children • Get to the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled

to arrive. • When the bus approaches, stand at least three giant steps (6 feet)

away from the curb, and line up away from the street. • Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says that it’s

okay before stepping onto the bus. • Use the handrails to avoids falls. When exiting the bus, be careful

that clothing with drawstrings, and book bags with straps don’t get caught in the handrails or doors.

• Never walk behind the bus. • Walk at least three giant steps away from the side of the bus. • If you drop something near the bus, tell the bus driver. Never try to

pick it up because the driver may not be able to see you.

It is very important that drivers, parents, and children understand and follow these practices in order to ensure everyone’s safety when it comes to school bus transportation.

HGTV

Home and Garden Television (HGTV), a cable network devoted to decorating and design, took over a pair of Stone Ridge townhouses last week to film a new show, “Showhouse Showdown”.

Two professional interior designers received identical budgets ($72,000) and the chance to create a winning interior design for two newly built, mirror image homes by Van Metre Homes. In just one week, the two designers, Eric Kole and Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey transformed the two townhomes with their unique style.

Once the design work was finished, the community was invited to come and take a look at the results. The first 100 people were given ballots to vote for their favorite house and give feedback. Two women were in line at 6 a.m., hours before the tours started. When the filming did ultimately start, nearly 400 people were ready to see the house (and possibly be interviewed for the show).

Van Metre Homes and Stone Ridge Community also hosted a block party for all attendees and neighbors. Hamburgers and hot dogs were served hot off the grill, and moon bounces and balloon animals were on site for the kids.

Jessi and Richard Roberts were waiting to see the houses with their two children. They live in the neighborhood, but had no idea what was going on and came to investigate. Jessi is a self-described “design freak” and was very excited to see how these designers approached the homes.

Terry Trebling of Florida just recently bought an end unit townhome on the same block as the model homes. “What a great memory of my new home” she said. Also in line with Trebling was Lindsay Reisinger of Herndon who wanted to see if she could find decorating ideas she could use.

Showhouse Showdown!

Bob (“Bachelor Bob”) Guiney is the host of the new show and spent time with the crowd taking pictures. Running through the introductions and opening script required a few takes because of the airplanes overhead, but then it was time to see the designers work.

After a tour of the first house (designed by Kole), Dina Andrews of Ashburn said she felt the look was “sterile“ and did not feel inviting.

With a different point of view was Hannah Graeff. Young Hannah watches the HGTV shows regularly (“14 hours a day,” she joked). She asked her parents to bring her from Charles Town, WV so she could participate. Her discerning eye preferred the first house with its clean lines and use of mirrors.

Hannah and Andrews disagreed on the second house, too. Andrews felt that the second home, designed by Cavin-Winfrey, was more

“homey” and very extravagant. She could see herself living there. Hannah, on the other hand, was overwhelmed by Cavin-Winfrey’s use of green, “lots of green”. She also felt the furniture was too big and out-of-scale with the house.

They both voted for their favorite house along with the other ballot holders. While the crowd stayed and taped the reveal for the winner, no one really knows who won the showdown. The reveal was taped twice, once for each designer. Everyone will have to tune in to the show to see who actually won.

The next show will be filmed in Wilmington, DE. The Showhouse Showcase will premier in August on HGTV. This episode is expected to air in late September.

Karen Montgomery Selected as VA

Library Association’s Trustee of the Year

The Virginia Library Association has announced that Karen Montgomery, representative from the Dulles District to the Loudoun County Library Board of Trustees, has been selected Virginia’s Trustee of the Year. Montgomery was recognized for her eight years of service to the Loudoun County Public Library, during which time she worked tirelessly with her fellow board members to shape a future for the Loudoun County Public Library.

Montgomery’s dedication to the forthcoming Gum Spring Library and her effective public advocacy was sighted as another reason for her selection. Nancy Nuell, Chair of the Loudoun County Public Library Board of Trustees states, “Karen Montgomery’s perseverance, tenacity and dogged determination are matched only by her passion for libraries. It is a rare quality for an individual to be inspirational enough to create a vision for a library space that serves as the heart of a community and the organizational and leadership skills to bring that vision to reality.”

Montgomery will be honored at the 2011 Virginia Library Association’s Conference to be held in Portsmouth, Virginia in October.
