SEPTEMBER 2011 ST. PETER’S MONTHLY E-NEWSLETTER On Sunday, September 18, preceding the 10:30 a.m. worship service, we will will vote on whether or not to leave the ELCA and join with the NALC. If this second vote follows the first vote, taken on June 19 th , in which we voted 97% to leave the ELCA and 96% to join with the NALC, then we will find ourselves on a new path. I have to admit that this change is a little scary. For 27 years I’ve been a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America or its predecessor, the Lutheran Church in America. The changes I face are too many to mention here, but those of you who are involved in the Lutheran women’s group or Lutheran men’s group will see some changes as well. There will be some unintended consequences of our choices. My advice is that we have patience to see this change for what it is, an opportunity to be about God’s business. I hope that we can all memorize the prayer that ends this article and take it to heart. Lord God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. On Sunday, September 18, preceding the 10:30 a.m. worship service, we will will vote on whether or not to leave the ELCA and join with the NALC. If this second vote follows the first vote, taken on June 19th, in which we voted 97% to leave the ELCA and 96% to join with the NALC, then we will find ourselves on a new path.

I have to admit that this change is a little scary. For 27 years I’ve been a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America or its predecessor, the Lutheran Church

in America.

Lord God, you have called your

servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Prayer LBW page 131)

Church Affiliation Update St. Peter will be having its constitutionally required second, and final vote on leaving theELCA on Sunday, September 18. Please make sure to attend church this Sunday and vote again to make your voice heard to our local and national Synods. We will not be voting again on joining the NALC; this only required one vote. Resources are still available online at www.stpeterchapin.com and you are welcome to email or call any church council member for concerns or questions regarding church affiliation issues. We would love to see an even stronger turnout on the second go around. A Transition Team has been formed and they are currently meeting to study processes that need to be looked at during this time. A revised church constitution, benevolence, signage and other issues are being addressed and more information will forthcoming very soon. If you have questions or concerns about transition to the new national church, please feel free to call Stephen Wessinger at 740-1419 or email at [email protected].

Golden Age Sunday 2011

“Let’s Talk Re-Formation”

Practice makes perfect. How many times have we all heard this one? It is…. partially true. We will NEVER be perfect at anything we do, for we are imperfect creatures. But, diligent practice, partnered with reasonable talent, DOES make us better at what we practice, to some degree. What about incorrect practice? If we incorrectly practice something over and over we learn it that we. But, if we practice, according to a correct example and do it diligently, hey, we are on the road to improvement!

So let’s talk re-formation. Often we say that certain areas need reforming within our church practices. Martin Luther has been pinned with the word REFORMATION because he set out to reform some of the practices of the Catholic Church. He then practiced those reformed worship guidelines, practices, and rituals. SO, he set an example for us to follow and even wrote it down in “THE SMALL CATECHISM”.

So let’s talk EXAMPLE. Our children learn by example. Children and their faith are formed and strengthened by worship practices at all ages. Children learn to come to church by coming WITH their parents. Children learn to worship God, by worshipping God, not by being told how to do it. Children learn to pray, not by being shown model prayers, but by their ACTUAL praying. Children learn to sing by singing! Children learn to serve the Lord, by serving and by seeing that example in the adults of the church.

Worship and Sunday school are not Drive-Through Drop Offs. Guess what---adults learn the same way children do. Whatever practices are evident in the lives of the adults/parents, are the very practices that are passed on to the children. Inferior example breeds inferior example until we no longer have people in our churches worshipping God; until classrooms at Sunday School echo with empty hollowness; until there is no one left to stand up for God the way he stands up for us. You can bet that the saints of this church who have gone on to live in heaven, did NOT sell eggs and butter to grow an empty building. They were investing in the future—a future of growing FAITH and SERVITUDE.And that’s the rest of the story………..Kathy

5th Sunday Gospel SingingThe July 31st Ice Cream Social and Gospel Singing were well received by our church members and guests from the Chapin-Little Mountain area. It has been suggested that we do this on the months that have a 5th Sunday. So therefore, our next date for this is October 30th at 6:00 p.m. social time, followed at 6:30 by the Pineywoods Gospel Band. *HINT: Mr. Benny Gerald Frick wants MORE ice cream. He went back for seconds and it was all gone. All right all you “churners” are you up for one more ice cream making? Please let Kathy know. We had some really super desserts as well. Thanks to all who made this fellowship event so wonderful!
