Extreme Pumpkin Carving & 'Lil Punkin Decorating

Our Mission Statement:The Alabama River Region Arts Center’smission is to bring the People of the RiverRegion together and enhance communitylife through a supportive environmentwhere people of all ages, backgrounds andabilities can study, create and present art.

Time: 9am-12

Cost: $15 per student Or $25 for a parent and chi ld (ages tenand up.)

Supplies and tools: *Bring Your Own Pumpkin. Studentsshould bring their choice of a jack-o’-lantern, or pie-sizepumpkin. A l i st of needed tools and materials wi l l be suppl iedat time of sign up. Maximum of 12 students. Minimumenrol lment is 6 carvers.

Class project wi l l be carving a witch in a pumpkin.

The ARRAC Board of Directorsmet Sept. 25 and Board officeswere elected. Frank Sul l ivan wasappointed as the Alabama RiverRegion Arts Center ExecutiveDirector. The Board also updatedthe By Laws toward simpl i fyingthe officer posi tions and movingthe posi tions to the Board. Otherbusiness i tems includedreviewing the Brains for Dinnerefforts on fund raising events,logo design, marketing effortthrough local events, andrecognizing the effort of thesevolunteers.

Notice anything di fferent this i ssue? Thanks to Bob Harris not only for thedonation of a Linux-operating system computer, loaded with great OpenSource software, and flat screen monitor; but for his gracious trainingsession and tech support. Thanks to Bob we wi l l be able to prepare thenewsletter total ly on si te at ARRAC. This i ssue has been created usingScribus, our new page layout software.

Thanks to Paul Payton, owner of Payton's Professional Painting, for thedonation of 15 gal lons of paint for the pottery studio. The paint wasdonated on a Saturday and 5 painters (Sharon Ervin, Donald Mobley,Dawn and Frank Sul l ivan, and Rick Bowman) started the next day andwere finished 2 hours later (Sharon and Dawn put in an addi tional fourhours of trim work). Meanwhi le, Sal ly Blackwel l donated an unused ki ln.

Thanks to theBirmingham's DanielFoundation'sgenerous grant, thePottery Studio is wel lon i ts way. Wheelshave been orderedand del ivered, wal lspainted, and soonwe wi l l have the sinkand drains instal led.Rick Bowman andFrank Sul l ivan havebui l t movable tablesfor the slab rol ler

TheARRAC UPDATE/SEPT. 2011New to Wetumpka from the Fairhope/Foley area is TheresaWayne joining ARRAC as an experienced art centermember and back-office organizer, having served over 5years on the Board of Foley’s Performing Arts Association’sand 4 years on the Board of Gal lery Morgan Hi l l (CA) withthe last 2 years as GMH's Treasurer and Presidentrespectively. Theresa, with a BSM in BusinessManagement and MS in Financial Planning, i salso an arti st that i s very resourceful havingbui l t and hauled her own pegboard displaysystem to ARRAC's outreach table at the recentBark in the Park outdoor event.

Theresa wi l l be the Arti stic Director &Resource Coordinator at ARRAC col lecting,coordinating and organizing information for a proprietarydatabase of our arti sts, students, instructors, and associatedbusinesses. This wi l l enable ARRAC to be the"clearinghouse or agent" for matching instructors withstudents, events with displays, businesses with workingarti sts/performers, etc. This wi l l also be useful for futureprogram development to meet the needs and demands ofthe community. Meet DañettaEvans, our newMarketing Direc-tor. Original lyfrom Montgom-ery, Dañettamoved backhere from Nashvi l le, to be closer to fami ly.Her background is Marketing/GraphicDesign and she has already generatedseveral Marketing reports and analyses to getus going in the right direction.

The Update asked Dañetta what brought herto ARRAC. Her answer: “I was attracted tothe center because of i ts communityoutreach. . .and I was looking for studiospace.” [she’s a si lkscreener] “I found theCenter by Googl ing ‘Art in Alabama’.”

Thanks, Google! Dañetta is a wonderfuladdi tion to ARRAC!

Sharon has graciously acceptedto be our Volunteer Coordinator(see pg. 7). A dedicated volunteerat the Center (indoors and out),fai thful Brainstormer, painter ofthe top-money Birdhouse at Barkin the Park, and a lover of dogs;she now adds ARRAC Gal lery

scheduler and event personnel staffing to her l i st of talents. Weappreciate her wi l l ingness to jump in and serve. Coming toWetumpka from Nebraska with the Federal Government,Sharon has decided to reti re here; around March 2012. Herdecision to reti re here stems partly from being involved withARRAC. Welcome, Sharon (& Heidi , her four-legged friend).

Our fi rst month of Kids Arts Clubs hasbeen a great success! There were 15enrol lments in Gui tar; Clay; &Drawing/Painting Clubs! Jon Masters, evenhad one mom, Vanessa Bordlee, sign upfor his Gui tar Club because she wanted tolearn from a professional how to playgui tar. Jon’s side of the story is he, “hasbeen in the company of giants,” in that hisclass members are al l very talented and apleasure to teach!

Austin Thompson has been the Clay Clubinstructor using paper clay and Sculpey I I .His class i s currently fini shing up their owlsculptures; next month they wi l l start onsculpting al iens. Marty McIntyre’sDrawing & Painting Club is probably themessiest of al l the Clubs, as they haveexplored everything from various kinds ofcharcoal to watercolors. Each chi ld also isencouraged to keep a sketchbookthroughout the week that they then bringto share, present, and cri tique with theirfel low Club members. Come join us!

Although we have yet to actual ly provide any food atthe meetings, nine members have fai thful ly showed uptwice this month for our Brains for Dinnerbrainstorming sessions. Held on alternating Thursdayafter Arts Clubs, ideas have been generating, planslaid, and names sl id into various committee andcoordinator posi tions. The next meeting wi l l be 1 0/6 at6:30 pm. We wi l l be fine-tuning the various jobdescriptions and fi l l ing slots for the upcoming events inwhich ARRAC wi l l be participating. Come and getinvolved! This i s a great chance to sign up for outreachevents in the community.

Sunday, September 25 ARRACmembers Theresa Wayne, Sharon

Ervin, Frank Sul l ivan, and Marty McIntyre showed upto meet the publ ic and their 4-legged friends at theHumane Society of Elmore County’s 6th Annual Barkin the Park held at Ft. Toulouse. We met many newfriends, with a multi tude of talents and arti sticinterests, who are interested in participating at theArts Center.

Dawn Sul l ivan, manning the HSEC Shop in thePavi l ion, kept an eye on the four birdhouses (picturedbelow) ARRAC members painted for the si lentauction. Thanks to Carol Barksdale, Dawn and FrankSul l ivan, and Sharon Ervin for lending their arti stry tomake four feathered friends the envy of their flock!

October 1 st was a stupendous day for an outdoorBluegrass Jam. We parked under the big tree andenjoyed the wonderful weather. Al l welcomed theopportuni ty to be outside and encourage each otherto learn a few new tunes. Visi tors who came lastmonth, decided to return. We even had coffee anddonuts!
