Well, it’s almost Labor Day and the beginning of the fall season. Although summer vacations may be over and the kids are heading back to school, the SBR schedule

is full of upcoming events sure to please the Porsche enthusiast. The Labor Day weekend will include our regularly scheduled

breakfast meeting on Saturday at Camarillo Airport’s Way Point Café. Come early and take advantage of the exclusive patio seating for our members. We could use a few volunteers to help man the gate before and after the announcements. It’s a perfect way to see the cars and meet your fellow members.

On Saturday, September 11th, following the Santa Barbara breakfast meeting, we will hold our annual Detail Clinic to give you some pointers on preparing your car for our upcoming 34th Concours d’Elegance at the California State University Channel Islands campus on October 10th. This is the first time in several years that we have offered the clinic in the southern area of our region, and Lavaggio Detailing Services of Agoura Hills will be our host. SBR Concours expert and seasoned judge

How would you like to be a part of the continuing growth of our monthly magazine? SBR is one

of the most active regions in the nation, which means we have more fun activities from which to choose. It also means there’s a lot to cover each month in the pages of “Der Auspuff.”

As the chief wrangler of all this information, I am asking for some assistance. I’d bet many of you are natural writers. And those are the folks I’m hoping will volunteer to write an article (or two) for our magazine. There are several gatherings to write about each month from the two, regularly scheduled breakfast meetings, to the organized events that have become so popular.

If you like to write, and would consider sharing your abilities with your fellow club members, please contact me directly at [email protected] and we’ll set you up with an assignment. While the compensation may not be huge, the rewards of contributing to the club are gigantic. Thanks in advance to anyone who may volunteer.

Speaking of the internet...I would strongly encourage the SBR faithful to utilize our PCA/SBR Members’ Forum, online at: http://www.pcasb.org/forums We ask that you register before posting, which helps us control outside traffic, but once you’re online, there are many resources from which to choose. Just the free Classifieds section alone, where you can list items “for sale” with photos, if you like, is worth a daily look. Don’t forget, if you’re seeking a specific item or part, the Classifieds can work in both directions.

There is a forum section for Activities, which includes the latest information on both SBR’s busy calendar of events and other car-related things going on throughout Southern California. Plus, there’s a General Discussion area where you can pose a question, create a poll to sample opinions, or simply chew the fat with fellow enthusiasts.

Check out the SBR Members’ Forum online. It’s currently an underutilized resource with unlimited potential. The more we all use it, the more valuable it becomes.

As always, thanks for your feedback on “Der Auspuff.” It’s a pleasure putting the publication together each month when I hear that so many of you look forward to reading it. If you have any comments or criticisms, please let me know.

Dick Douglass will give tips on car preparation and show you where the judges look for dirt. A representative from Maguires will demonstrate its products and answer your questions about detailing your pride and joy. We hope you take advantage of this opportunity and R.S.V.P. today. The cost is only $10 and includes lunch. Check the ad on page 2 for the details.

For those of you who love to track your cars, our final autocross of the year will be held Saturday, September 18th at the Camarillo Airport. It promises to be a sold-out event, so fill out the registration form and send it in soon. Our new Autocross Co-Chair, Martin Keller, will be assisting Lloyd Martinez with his last event as co-chair. So come on by, welcome Martin and say thank you to Lloyd for his years of dedicated service. You’ll find the registration form on page 5.

On Saturday, September 25th, the Merricks and the Kinslings host our annual Gimmick Rally “With A Twist” in scenic Santa Barbara County. Drive some wonderful back roads while you answer a list of questions based on what you see along the way. This is the perfect opportunity to have fun with your spouse or significant other, or just team up with a friend and enjoy the day. The route will conclude at lovely Nojoqui Falls Park near Solvang for a BBQ picnic lunch. This event is always popular, so fill out the form on page 22 and send it in soon.

Our friends at Rusnak Westlake Porsche have generously offered to provide a $500 check to our region for every new or pre-owned car purchased by our members, or for referrals to their dealership by our members that culminate in a sale. So if you are in the market for a car, or know someone who is, give General Manager Keith Goldberg a call at (800) 206-9405. Your support is very much appreciated and will benefit the region.

We hope to see you at a breakfast meeting or an event soon.

Alternate Vehicle Months are always popular with the SBR Breakfast crowds and our August gathering at Camarillo’s

Way-Point Café was no exception. Seventy-two total vehicles packed the tarmac and patio lawn, 23 of them non-Porsches. Everything from two beautiful Ferraris to a vintage Austin Healey gave our first-Saturday-of-the-month car show a whole new appeal. There was a new, stealthy black Cadillac CTS from Rusnak. Bill Sampson’s Mercury Woody, emblazoned with stickers drew its usual band of admirers, as did a red Alfa Romeo, and a silver Saturn Sky with custom “Lambro doors.” There was something for everyone.

President Dave Stone welcomed the group of 133 members and guests, introduced a few dignitaries in attendance, and turned the meeting over to Activities Co-Chair Ted Lighthizer. The upcoming Santa Barbara Region Events Calendar is packed with great things to do. Ted brought up a series of event organizers to outline their particular offerings.

Bill Sampson reminded us about the August 18th Panamera Tech Session at Santa Barbara Auto Group. Carolyn Ewbank plugged the upcoming Pre-Concours Detail Clinic on September 11th at Lavaggio, followed a month later by the 34th Annual Concours on October 10th at California State University Channel Islands.

Michael Brovsky spoke about the Wine Country Harvest Tour to be held October 16-17 in Solvang. Dave Mosesson introduced us to his November 20th event Go Kart Racing at the Jim Hall track in Oxnard. Doug Maletz, along with his wife, Nancy, has once again planned a terrific getaway for Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend in January 2011. SBR is headed to Las Vegas for a stay at The Mirage, a tour of Hoover Dam, and a fun drive to The Valley of Fire state park. Details and registration information for all these great events can be found here in the pages of Der Auspuff, or on our website. As always, the popularity of our events means early sign-up is a must.

As the beautiful cars carefully untangled themselves and headed off into the outside world, we were once again reminded of what fun it is to get together and share our mutual interests in things automotive. Next week – Santa Barbara! =

You move fast. So do we.Almost twenty years ago, we pioneered pleasure-use insurance exclusively to PCA members nationwide. Over time our plans have grown. They have grown again. A lot.

Want to commute occasionally? Fine. Want unlimited mileage? No problem. Don’t want to pay a deductible? Ok. Or pile savings onto savings: set limits for even bigger discounts.

There’s more. Our new California program also covers race cars, street rods, trailers, classic and custom motorcycles, special interest vehicles (like your Porsche tractor), kit cars and replicas.

One thing that hasn’t changed is our personal service. We’re here to help you.

A large crowd of 69 members and guests filled the north room at Moby Dick’s for our August

get-together. Twenty-nine Porsches graced the wharf with several “alternate vehicles” beside them. SBR President Dave Stone welcomed some special guests: mechanic Steve Fineberg from SBAG, who accompanied Walt Branscome; and Marriette Simoni from Johnny Rockets in Camarillo, who joined us for breakfast with her assistants, Dave and Glen.

Membership Chair Janice Herndon welcomed new members David Litschel and Martha Shilliday from Santa Barbara, first-time attendee Linda Giovannozzi, also from S.B., and transfer member Steve Keneally, who joins SBR from the Rocky Mountain Region. Also introduced were prospective members Thomas Koch with his sons, Marco and Alex, from Ventura, and V.J. Sharma, a guest of Ken Just, from Santa Barbara.

Activities Co-Chairs Ted Lighthizer and Doreen Pankow presented the upcoming calendar of SBR events. Bill Sampson promoted the Aug 18th SBAG Panamera Tech Session. Dick Douglass reminded everyone about the September 11th Pre-Concours Detail Clinic at Lavaggio and

New SBR members Martha Schilliday and David Litschel of Santa Barbara

the October 12th Concours d’Elegance to be held this year at California State University Channel Islands. Ted Lighthizer encouraged everyone to sign up for the September 18th Autocross at Camarillo Airport.

Jeffrey & Rosalee Merrick, who are co-charing the Gimmick Ralley with Randy & Sue Kinsling, explained to the breakfast goers just exactly what a “gimmick rally” is not, before defining just exactly what the September 25th event would entail. Michael Brovsky promoted the October 16-17 Wine Country Harvest Tour, which is filling up fast, thanks to a bargain price for the weekend, which has been underwritten by Santa Barbara Auto Group.

The meeting ended with a raffle drawing for ten beautiful Porsche posters from SBAG General Sales Manager Ben Schroeder. With ten individual winners, there were lots of happy faces. =

Wow! That’s the only way I can start this report. I’ll say it again...WOW!

We beat the odds and had perfect stargazing weather: temperature in the 90s at the hotel in Frazier Park and in the 60s at the observation site around 9000 feet in altitude.

No traffic, no fires, and amazing blue, cloudless skies! We had approximately 25 Porsches (Carreras, GT3s, Caymans, Boxsters) and a few other vehicles that participated in the Saturday trip to Mount Pinos. The 21-mile road is always a thrill in a sports car. Heading uphill in the daylight is one thing, but driving downhill in the dark, the starry night surrounding you, is an experience in itself.

porsCHes to pinosall eyes on tHe skies as sbr boldly goes stargazing

We picnicked in the parking lot near the summit, surrounded by towering pines with the darkening firmament above us. Then, our first-quarter moon dominated the early evening, followed by the observation of Venus, Mars and Saturn. Next, the stars magically appeared one by one, and I began pointing out the basic constellations, stars and asterisms with a high powered green laser pointer (borrowed from Darth Vader). The North Star, Big Dipper, Scorpius, Sagittarius, Draco, and Summer Triangle were all clearly visible. We spotted double stars, the “coat hanger,” glimmering star clusters and nebulae using only our own binoculars. Some of my students and friends from Moorpark College filled in the sky tour with the college’s telescopes.

What an amazing night! I especially want to express my grateful thanks to Janice Herndon and all those who stayed late and helped me pack the telescope in our Cayman. It’s very difficult to pack the equipment in the darkness without flashlights and carrying help. Thank you!

I also want to thank Joe Hepp, Tony Ransford, Valerie Sieberlich, Bill Ruecker and Dennis Duquette (friends and students) for allowing us to use their telescopes in our own star trek.

The hotel in Frazer Park was adequate and comfortable for our restful sleep, which we needed for our road trip on Sunday morning. After our complimentary breakfast, 13 Porsches and two Mercedes attacked the roads ahead. Lockwood Road and 33 Highway are two of the best Porsche roads in Southern California, with hairpins, sweeping curves, dramatic elevation changes, hair-raising dips and beautiful scenery. Most of the roads have recently been repaved, too, giving us a beautiful ride.

Unfortunately, Richard & Lonette Pope hit a medium-sized rock on the road sustaining tire damage which disabled their

Porsche. Special thanks to Bill & Rosemary Sampson and Don & Linda Kuckenbaker for staying with the Popes until a tow truck arrived and they were squared away. This was the first event the Popes have attended and I hope this will not dampen their enthusiasm.

We had a nice lunch outside on the patio at the Garden Terrace in Ojai. We enjoyed the food and the company of 18 fellow club members. Six seats around three round tables made the conversation delightful.

Finally, Terry and I really, really enjoyed our starry adventure! For those who joined us, I hope you did, too! =

Precise portions of each chili recipe were served to the hungry guests, who also acted as the panel of judges.

The “judges” thoughtfully tasted the best SBR had to offer.

Terry Middlebrook explained the fascinating history of The Lady Scoville Perpetual Trophy. The crowd was enthralled.

SBR’s 14th Annual Competition Is Hot Stuff

For the 4th year in a row Jim & Terry Middlebrook offered up their lovely home to host one of the club’s most popular events, the annual chili cook-off.

Jim & Terry had a major change planned for this year’s chili cook-off. A perpetual trophy would go to the winning chef, who would then pass it on to next year’s winner, and so on. After much thought and research on the topic of chili, Jim & Terry decided to honor the accomplishments of Wilbur Scoville, who in1912 devised a quantitative scale for the pungency of chili peppers: the Scoville Organolepic Test. Then, with creative juices flowing, The Lady Scoville Perpetual Trophy was created from a 70-year-old loving cup rescued from Ebay. A bit worse for wear, a Porsche door handle was custom-fashioned to replace one of the trophy’s missing handles. “Lady Scoville,” who may have been quite a tennis player in her earlier years, proudly wears an apron, a PCA medallion around her neck, and holds high a chili pot and a hand-carved spoon. The Lady Scoville Perpetual Trophy is also fitted with a new base listing all the past chili cook-off winners and space for the names of future victors to be honored. Costs associated with the creation of this iconic award were paid by the Middlebrooks and the club. Kudos to Jim & Terry for all they’ve done and do to make our club’s chili cook-offs so much fun.

timely manner, a redesigned serving line using five servers was implemented with great success. Thanks to food servers Janice Herndon, Phyllis Weaver, Diane Macdonell, Luz Mosesson, Suzanne Stoops, and Pam Alfenito. Jeanne McNair took charge of a dozen different chili pots and wrapped them with chili decorated covers and assigned numbers. Pre-event setup for this year’s cook-off was done by Mike Macdonell, Michael Jacobs, Jim Middlebrook and Gary Weaver. On-site parking was handled by Bob Bassett, Larry Stoops and Gary Gasperino. John McNair and Oscar Briones took charge of mounting and displaying the Porsche flag and club banner for all to see and enjoy. And with that, the stage was set for the PCA/SBR 14th Annual Chili Cook-Off to begin.

After eating delicious appetizers, salads, and breads and tasting all the different recipes of chili, it was time for members to vote for their favorite chili. Barry Weinstein counted the ballots and declared the winners with Valerie Weinstein serving as “notary” to attest the count’s accuracy.

And The Winners Were...Ilene Freeman, who became a PCA/SBR member in November

2008, won third prize and was presented a $25 gift certificate from the Goodie Store. Robin Liebes, who has been a PCA/SBR member since November, 2009, won second prize and took home a $50 gift certificate from the Goodie Store. The Grand Prize winner was Terri Koskie, who received a $75 gift certificate and the coveted Lady Scoville Perpetual Trophy. Terri, a repeat chili champion, won first place in 2008.

After the awards, everyone raced inside to enjoy the scrumptious desserts brought by the attendees. Everything from brownies and lemon cookies to lemon & strawberry trifle dishes and Marionberry pie was there for all to enjoy. Thanks again to all the volunteers and to Jim & Terry Middlebrook for making the PCA/SBR 14th Annual Chili Cook-Off one of the best yet! =

Auto Start Stop is a function that lets you save fuel by turning off the engine at idle. If activated and you stop at a traffic light with your foot on the brake pedal, for example, the Auto Start Stop function can automatically turn off the engine. This fuel-saving

feature restarts the engine as soon as you release the brake pedal, once the light turns green.

Key advantages are that there is no need for you to change your driving habits, and the function can be activated/deactivated by the push of a button. You can simply drive the way you are used to. In addition, all audio and communication systems, as well as heating and cooling, remain on, despite the engine being turned off. This ensures that your level of comfort is maintained.

The Auto Start Stop function can be activated and deactivated using a separate button. The function may remain inactive under particular circumstances, for example, very high outside temperatures, on extreme uphill gradients, or if the battery charge is low. The starter has been modified to meet the increased requirements demanded by this function, and the battery is continuously monitored for the level of charge and condition. The battery and starter are consumable components and are subject to an increased rate of wear in the event of frequent engine stopping.

The new Auto Start Stop technology is currently available on specific Panamera and Cayenne models. =

SBRBoardofDirectorsMeeting

MinutesRecordedbyJaniceHerndon

August 11, 2010 - 6:30 p.m. – Santa Barbara Auto Group

Thank you Santa Barbara Auto Group (Walt Branscome and Ben Schroeder, General Sales Manager) for hosting the August dinner board meeting. Present were board members: David Stone, Bill Sampson, Nick Liakas, John Alfenito, Carolyn Ewbank, Jim Brown, Steve Kaller, James Oldham, John McNair, Jeanne McNair, Janice Herndon, Chet Yabitsu, Joan Yabitsu, Dan Byers, and Martin Keller. Other club members present were Oscar Briones and Janet Kaller.

Secretary: Minutes from the July board meeting were accepted as submitted.

Vice President: Bill Sampson reported 22 participants have registered for the Panamera Tech Session August 18th at SBAG. Rick Perkins of PCNA will conduct the session.

Treasurer: Steve Kaller presented the balance sheet and profit and loss YTD comparative. The 2010 year-end financials will be published in the February 2011 issue of Der Auspuff.

Membership: Janice Herndon reported that during the month of July, 25 new members joined our region including two members from the Delaware and Los Angeles Regions. At the end of July, membership stood at 755. National’s membership is nearing the 58,000 mark with growth resulting from improved retention of members.

Activities: The August 28th Progressive Dinner is sold out. Other events are: September 11th Pre-Concours Detail Clinic at Lavaggio in Agoura Hills; September 18th Camarillo Autocross; September 25th Gimmick Rally with a Twist; October 10th Concours d’Elegance; October 16-17, 2010 – Wine Country Harvest Tour.

Editor: John Alfenito reported that, once again, Sir Speedy did a “speedy” job of printing and delivering the August issue, which facilitated an early delivery to the Bulk Mail Center by Chet & Joan Yabitsu.

Distribution: 773 copies of Der Auspuff were mailed out on July 29th. This was an increase from the 763 copies mailed of the July issue. 729 were mailed to the membership, 39 to advertisers, four complimentary/promotional and one for

the SBR archive. The postage cost was $419.32. This leaves a balance of $584.56, which is sufficient for the September mailing.

Advertising: Don Kuckenbaker updated on invoices sent out and payments received.

Goodie Store: John & Jeanne McNair reported their most recent sales figures. The online Goodie Store link was down but should be up soon.

Insurance: Jim Brown has filed all certificates through September.

Concours: Carolyn Ewbank and her committee are finalizing the Pre-Concours Detail Clinic with Lavaggio. A visit was paid to the concours location. There is good cooperation from other regions.

Autocross: Dan Byers is checking on Zone 8 dates for autocross events in Camarillo and Santa Barbara for 2011. The board welcomed Martin Keller, who has volunteered to succeed Lloyd Martinez as the Camarillo Autocross co-chair for 2011. There was discussion of developing future track events.

Archives: James Oldham had nothing new to report.

Webmaster: Randy Fishwick added new events and fliers to our online calendars. He renewed our PCASB.ORG domain for another three years at a cost of $24.79. He is working on adding more photographic content to our site.

R.U.F.: Nick Liakas announced the new co-chair, Hal Jandorf, who will handle alternating months. The group will visit the Santa Susana Train Depot and Museum on August 26th. On November 18th they will visit Edwards Air Force Base and the NASA museum, then lunch with staff and service personnel.

President: In addition to SBR member Martin Keller joining the autocross team, SBR member Art Grimmit also responded to the email and offered his assistance at both the Santa Barbara and Camarillo events in 2011.

Old Business: Des Warren is actively researching the best speakers to add to our sound system and will find us the best deal possible. Discussion was held on board

positions which will need to be filled next year.

The Porsche Sport Driving School raffle ticket sales totaled $873 for our charities. SBR member Frank Ladwig was the lucky winner of the PSDS raffle. Thank you to Santa Barbara Porsche Sales Manager Ben Schroeder for providing this valuable gift to our region. Another opportunity to drive the new Cayennes and Panameras will occur at the October 16-17th Wine Tasting event in Solvang.

New Business: Rusnak Westlake Porsche has initiated a sales promotion starting immediately and running through the end of the year. For every new or pre-owned Porsche car purchased by an SBR member, Rusnak will provide a check for $500 to the club. The deal also includes any purchase referral made to Rusnak by an SBR member that culminates in a deal on a new or pre-owned Porsche. In either case, members must contact General Manager Keith Goldberg in advance of the dealership contact in order for payment to occur. This is a generous offer and one we will be promoting at our breakfast meetings and by mass e-mail.

Porsche A.G. is offering free Porsche Club Coordination trophies to regions for their end-of-year awards. Dave Stone ordered some last week for presentation to our outgoing board members at the Holiday Dinner on December 11th.

A discussion was held regarding our monthly breakfast meetings.

Dual membership was also brought up. PCA makes no provision for dual membership. A motion was made and carried that SBR terminate dual membership status.

Discussion ensued regarding the future management of the Goodie Store and its operation.

Pricing policy for future overnight events was examined. Discussion on how best to cover emergency costs and the standardization of a cancellation policy were discussed.

Meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
