BONNIE LORE - an occasional column by her long- suffering husband. Chapter 15 “The String”

In 1969, six-year-old Kailash came from India to be part of the Cappuccino family as our 14th child. A few months later, winter also arrived. Our old log house was COLD.* One day Bonnie had been a little upset with Kailash because he was going through a stage of chewing on the ends of his shirtsleeves and sweaters, leaving they raggedy. I didn’t see the incident personally, but Tibiki reported that she and Kailash were keeping warm, sitting behind the kitchen wood-stove on a bench near the small door going up to the Loft above the kitchen. Kailash was experimenting with a loose tooth. He was poking it with his tongue, but it wouldn’t come out. So Tibiki suggested: “Why don’t you tie a string around it?” Being an agreeable kid, he did so, and sat there, pulling lightly on the string, trying to encourage the tooth to part from his gum. Tibiki said, “Why don’t you tie it to the door? When Daddy comes down and opens the door, the string will pull the tooth right out.” He was summoning courage, with three feet of string hanging out of his mouth, when Bonnie came into the kitchen from outside: “What are you doing with that stupid string in your mouth?” She gave it a good yank. She was really surprised to see a tooth come out with the string. With great effort, Tibiki controled her urge to laugh. She didn’t want to further embarrass her brother. She barely succeeded in stifling a real guffaw. Kailash didn’t see any humour in the episode, but he was glad to get rid of the troublesome tooth, which went under his pillow for the tooth fairy, who was giving out quarters back then. *Our house was heated by four wood-stoves. The boys used chainsaws to cut the wood from our own 100 acres. After 24 years, when all 13 sons had grown up and gone, Bonnie refused (in spite of my earnest pleas and entreaties) to take the chainsaw out and cut the wood! I had no choice but to have an oil furnace installed. A few years ago somebody came and buried 1000 feet of hose six feet deep in our pasture. We now have geo-thermal heat, having rid ourselves of the oil furnace. Its supposed to pay for itself in seven to ten years. We’ll see. But the heat and air-conditioning are superb.

GUJARAT, A dowser is using two rods, each containing five kinds of metal. He walks until the two rods cross each other. He repeats this several times from different directions until he has the precise point. Ironically they marked the water spot with a cactus. Bookkeeper Ravi is carrying Bonnie’s purse, which contains 21,863 items. Does dowsing really work? Rene photo.

GUJARAT, Bonnie and Manager Kalaben with Mr Oza, the architect. We are hoping to start construction soon on two buildings, one for boys and one for girls on this two-acre plot. Most of the children went back home during the summer break. These girls below had no place to go, so stayed at Child Haven. Rene said they were “bored beyond goofy.” Rene photos.
