We have always heard about bringing the outside in, but in

today's world, the goal is to bring the inside out. This is the per-

fect time of year to refresh your patio, terrace or outdoor living

spaces, as everything is on sale! We may be in the throws of

summer, but the retail world is already thinking of the next

season, which is good for our wallet. Everything you might have

used inside, is now made in outdoor versions.

Exterior Decorating has come a long way but the bottom line is

create a space that accommodates your needs while honoring the

style of your home. A shopping trip can "trick out' your exterior

spaces with everything from outdoor chandeliers, drapery panels

made from exterior fabrics to blow in the breeze, portable re-

places and more. In today's world, anything you can do inside,

you can do outside. There are even televisions specially made for

outdoor viewing...now I think that may be a bit much.

Consider also, simplistic ideas like mason jars with tealights hung

from trees and placed everywhere. Simple centerpieces made

from a collection of small mouth jars and owers cut from the

garden. Also, keep in mind, that a decorating professional can

help you transform the exterior spaces as easily as the interior. If

you want the benet of a professional, please give me a call, and

we would be delighted to help you have the spaces of your

dreams, both interior and exterior.

Add perceived

value to your

home by replacing

at hollow core

doors with raised

panel doors.

Did you know? The diagonal corner to the room’s entry is generally where

the eye is drawn !rst. If you are right handed, you will look at the right

diagonal corner !rst and the reverse if you are left handed. Pay close

attention to how you treat that corner.

Scale and Proportion - Tall with tall, small with small, wide with wide, and

narrow with narrow will guide you throughout the decorating process.

Mimic the shape of each space you are decorating. For example, a sofa

should be accessorized with horizontal art so you are complementing wide

with wide. By following these simple guidelines, you will achieve a sense of

balance and proportion with furniture and accessories.

Family Friendly - It may be called a family room but so often the focus is

simply the television. Strive to create spaces that allow for TV viewing but

most importantly allow for conversation "ow. For optimum interaction, the

conversation area should be within a 9’ area. The grouping should seat 5

to 6 people. For important conversation, i.e. husband and wife, the seats

should be within 4’ to 5’ of one another. If you are close enough to reach

out and touch someone, then you will be more apt to converse while

sitting in the room.

Key of Three - When placing the furniture, remember to mix the color or

pattern throughout the room. This will give the room a further sense of

balance and will result in pockets of color around the room. A color must

be used a minimum of three times to make it belong.

Rule of 2/3 - Treat the wall around a piece of furniture like matting on a

picture. Let the wall frame your furniture or artwork. Do NOT !ll the entire

wall space. Only !ll 2/3 of the space.

Keep the Eye Moving - Strive to achieve a line that keeps the eye moving

around the room. You don’t want any abrupt changes in height but a

gentle transition between highs and lows in the room. Bridging highs and

lows will actually make the room seem larger. A simple way to do this is to

incorporate artwork as transition pieces.

Triangle Trick - Of all shapes, the triangle is most pleasing to the human

eye. It is a shape that will be repeated many times in your arranging

process. Furniture, lighting, and accessories will all be improved with the

bene!t of triangular placement.

Bowling Anyone - A common mistake is to place the sofa on the longest

wall; this reinforces a bowling alley feel to a room. Try to "oat the sofa on

an angle to create a sense of depth to the space.

A well decorated room is a combination of decorating

fundamentals and tricks that create a polished and cohe-

sive space. Take your room to a new level by following

some of the guidelines that I use on a regular basis.
