This history of Labor Day dates back to 1882, when 10,000 New York workers marched down Union Square in New York city. The workers took an un-paid day off in order for employers to recognize their hard work and low wages. The word quickly spread and many other workers from other cities across the US took a day off to protest for better working conditions and better pay. 12 years later in 1894, a large protest with a Chicago railroad company, led to national attention as workers went on strike and caused the railways system in Chicago to shut down. President Grover Cleveland sent troops to Chicago. Through riots and lives lost, this boycott brought national attention. It also brought the poor working conditions of under paid workers to the public eye. In September 1894, the US government declared that the first Monday in September the holiday known as Labor Day.

Winter Heat & Energy Saving Tips 1. Keep the thermostat set two or four degrees below what you are used to (at least 68 degrees during the day and 60 degrees at night) 2. When away from your apartment for more than several days, lower the thermostat to at

least 55 degrees. 3. Keep return heating air grills and warm air ducts clean. Dust and lint can keep a room

from receiving sufficient heat. 4. Don’t go in and out of exterior doors needlessly. Frequent opening and closing of doors

wastes heat and money. 5. Do not block off registers or radiators with draperies or curtains, furniture or other obstructions. 6. Reduce using your exhaust fan over your stove during the winter. It reduces heat. Only

use if necessary. 7. Showers use less water than a tub bath. Saving water saves energy. 8. When shaving, partially fill the basin with hot water, rather than letting the hot water go

down the drain. 9. Turn off lights and appliances that are not in use. 10. Wash a full load of dishes in the dishwasher.
