A few words from our new Rides Director, Jim Stewart :
You, too, can be a leader.
Recognizing the need toschedule more rides and agreater variety of rides for our members, the SBCBoard sought the assis-tance of a professional, highly organized motiva-tional Bike Ride OrganizingAgency. After a lengthy tal-ent search (details kept se-cret), they gave up and de-
cided to look for a willingbut nave club member. So,after a couple of friendlycalls from Howard, I havefound myself pegged as theSBC Rides Coordinator. Af-ter a month of panic and in-activity, I am now ready totake immediate and drasticaction, in the form of a cryfor HELP!!! to all clubmembers. Heres the deal:
We are blessed with thecontributions of a handful of club members who lead
great rides several times amonth, but they take onmore than their fair share. Itseems all we need is a fewmore of us to volunteer tolead the occasional ride, and we could easily fill outour ride schedule. It wouldbe great to have at leastone ride of each pace So-cial, Moderate, and Brisk, each weekend. TheWednesday night rides from
Gasworks and Marymoor have been doing well, largely thanks to regular or-ganizational help of a dedi-cated few (Thanks, Jenni-fer!), but adding some other mid-week rides for the so-cial and moderate crowdwould be great, too.
Ideally, with about 150 peo-ple in SBC, if there were 20or so who lead rides
monthly, or just every fewmonths, then we could haveall the rides we needed(how simple, huh?). To getstarted, I will be emailing asurvey to all club members, and ask for everyones re-sponse. It will ask if youwould be willing to leadsome rides, and if so, whattype. If you arent up for leading, then please let usknow what kinds of rides
you would lik e to seescheduled. After we get re-sponses, Ill tally the resultsand follow-up with another
newsletter article to tell youthe results.
As we identify people to beregular and occasionalleaders, we will also de-velop procedures to makeand maintain the club rideschedule. Also, as a groupwe will figure out wh at weneed in the way of tr aining, incentives, and anythingelse needed to make the
program a success (likeparties). As a rough sched-ule, we would like to get thee-mail questionnaires backand processed in the nextmonth, and then workthrough the off-season to trysome things out and get or-ganized. Then, come nextMarch, we will be ready for spring weather with morerides that meet the needs of all our members. Also, as a
last note, if anyone knowsof a sponsor who will pro-vide free custom carbon fi-ber bikes to all ride leaders, please speak up.
Looking forward to morerides Jim Stewart .

Riding their tandem fromAlaska to Florida in 2004,Randall & Barb Angell of Bothell, WA completed their long time dream of cycling across N orth Amer-ica. Crossing the Conti-nental Divide 15 times, their 165 day, 7,100 mile
journey took them through diverse terrain, cultures andweather. Why would two automotive engineers quit their jobs and sell their house in Michigan to capture 16,000 photos of touring bliss? The answer lies intheir well-documented half-hour slide show that makes you feel like you werealong for the ride. This is an epic adventure you won't want to miss!
