“What is happening at International?” you might be asking yourself. Well, this is the place to find out. Read on and you’ll find out what has been happening including the results of the spring elections, highlights of the Board of Directors meeting and what is looming on the horizon. The spring elections resulted in a new slate of International officers including: President Eric Peterson; Executive Vice President Larry Linner; Senior Vice President Jerry Pierson. Aside from the normal International Officer elections, the bal- lots this spring included several proposed by-law amendments. The results of the voting ap- proved the creation of two new International Vice President positions: Vice President - Vendor Relations (Gerry Tschabold) and Vice President – Internet Operations (Andy Brooks). The other by-law issue on the ballot was the proposed combination of the member grades of Senior Mem- ber and Member. This measure was defeated. The Board of Directors meeting convened the Saturday preceding the 65 th International Confer- ence. The meeting produced several highlights including the announcement of the various schol- arship awards winners, the selection of the Society’s award winners, the approval of a Recom- mended Practice and the selection of the site for the 2009 International Conference. Three scholarships are awarded on an annual basis. Each scholarship this year was for $1,000. The Children of Members scholarship recipient was Laura M. Guse, daughter of John Guse (SL). The Children of Members/Frank Fong Memorial scholarship recipient was Grant Heydinger, son of Gary Heydinger (KH). The International Conference Scholarship recipient was Travis Lockyear of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The Awards Committee assembles the slate of candidates for Benefactor, Fellow, Honorary Fel- low and Ed Payne Award for approval by the BOD. The Board approved John Nakai (LA) as Honorary Fellow and the following individuals as Fellows: Runar Aasen (CE), Chris Filiopou- los (BW), Gerry Tschabold (HR) and yours truly. I’ll always remember “walking the line” – it was quite an emotional experience. The Missiles and Space workshop presented Recommended Practice 16 “Measurement - Missile & Space” to the Board for approval. The Board approved the RP and it should be available to members soon. Have you ever been to Wichita? Victor Graham presented a proposal to hold the 2009 conference in Wichita, Kansas. The board voted to accept the bid and the Wichita Chapter is now scheduled to host the 68 th International Conference. 2006 International Conference James Valentine and Glen Maijala Conference Co-Chairmen

(Continued from Page 1) There is some bad news on the conference front. As it currently stands, there is no Southwest Regional Conference scheduled for this year. Those of you planning on using the conference as a “warm-up” for the International Confer-ence next year in Madrid may want to consider alternate plans. The Hampton Roads Chapter is hosting the Chesapeake Bay Regional Conference on November 1-3. For more information, contact Alan Titcomb at (757)688-9954 or [email protected] . The Central European Chapter needs our input. Those of you who are considering attending the conference next May in Madrid, please contact me at ([email protected] or (661)572-1086) and let me know if you will simply be attend-ing or if you plan on submitting a paper.

On behalf of our chapter, we are proud to have hosted the 65th Annual SAWE International Conference in Valencia, California. For those that attended the conference, we hope you enjoyed a rich and rewarding experience. High goals were set in terms of attendance, technical content, training, vendor participation, social events, and income. We are pleased to report that we met or ex-ceeded most of our goals and we greatly exceeded our income projections, due to the large numbers of registered attendees and outstanding vendor and sponsor participation. SAWE relies on the

profits generated from the International Conference as the primary source of income for the year. We performed so well that this conference was one of the top 3 conferences to date in terms of revenue, with a profit of approximately $45,000.

It was back in the spring of 2003 that our chapter decided to bid for the 2006 International Conference. After Jim presented our bid at the Board of Directors (BOD) meeting in New Haven, we were rewarded with the opportunity to host this confer-ence. It sure seemed like a long way off at that time! We made steady if unspectacular progress over the next two years, which we shared at the BOD Meetings in Newport Beach and Annapolis. Probably the first real dose of reality came when the shipment of some ½ dozen large boxes of conference materials arrived at the doorstep (courtesy of Chris Filiopoulos – last year’s Conference Co-Chair). Then, after hosting the International Planning Meeting and 32nd Annual Southwestern Regional Conference last fall we realized just how much work was really ahead of us. It was an exciting, yet scary feeling for the conference committee as the conference started to get closer. There was this interesting combination of wishing the conference was farther off to get more work done, wishing it was here so we could enjoy the fruits of our labor, and wishing it was over so the work would be done! Now that it is in the past, we look back with a deep sense of pride that it went well and an equally deep sense of relief that it really is over.

The Hyatt Valencia proved to be the perfect venue for our conference. The staff responded quickly to our needs, the facilities were first rate and the food was great. They were quick to react when we had to move the Sunday Conference Reception indoors due to rainy weather (now the out-of-towners know that it really does rain in Southern California). Adjacent to the hotel grounds is the Valencia Town Center, which features an incredible variety of shops, res-taurants, and entertainment within easy walking distance. This close proximity was very con-venient to our guests and allowed people to stay out of their cars if so desired. (Continued on next page…)

Lockheed Martin Aeronautics (LM Aero) played a huge role in contributing to a successful conference. In addition to being a Double Diamond Sponsor, LM Aero supported most of our audio-visual needs, printed all of our graphic arts projects, provided lots of goodies for our registration bags, and organized our Thursday plant tour. Rick Baker, the Vice President and General Manager of LM Aero in Palmdale gave an inspiring speech at our conference opening session which set the tone for the entire conference. Tom Morgenfeld, the Director of Flight Operations for LM Aero in Palmdale (before he retired) gave an absolutely entertaining presentation on the X-35 Program at the G/I Luncheon. LM Aero also provided sig-nificant support for Jim, Glen, Tom Koonce, and Richard Lidh to participate in the conference. Northrop Grumman Inte-grated Systems also contributed greatly as a Double Diamond Sponsor and providing company support for John Hargrave and Erin Burgess to participate in the conference.

We scheduled events during the course of the conference that were intended to showcase the rich diversity of Southern Cali-fornia. Gail Maijala did a great job in organizing these events and acting as tour guide. Our featured events included a Sun-day outing at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Tuesday evening dinner and magical experience at The Magic Castle in Hollywood. Guest events included trips to The Getty Villa Museum in Malibu, the Nethercutt Collection, and Descanso Gardens. For our final event, we toured the Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company in Palmdale, home of the famed Skunk Works. Since we couldn’t see very much of the LM Aero plant due to security regulations, we also visited Blackbird Airpark and the Plant 42 Palmdale Heritage Airpark. The bus gasped its last bit of life just as we were about to turn in to the Blackbird Airpark, which made things a bit more exciting. Somehow, everything turned out OK as the re-placement bus arrived just in time to leave Lockheed for our return to the hotel. (Continued on next page...)

Finally, we would like to thank our chapter for their efforts and, in particular, our incredibly dedicated 2006 Conference Committee. This group worked very hard to make the conference a success. In addition to the “normal” conference tasks, the committee dealt with extra challenges associated with the introduction of a new conference technical track, the addition of in-week training courses, and the introduction of on-line registration and payments. With this in mind, we’d like to take

this opportunity to recognize the key members of our committee. Al and Angie Bayly were our Hospitality Chairpersons. This was the first and easiest commit-tee to select. Who else could possibly host a week long series of parties better than this wonderful couple! They came all the way from Arizona to make sure we had a great time. Bill Childers was our Registration Chair, Webmaster and member of the Financial Committee. On top of the difficult task of tracking the registration and payments of over 200 attendees and guests, Bill was integral in the development and integration of the on-line registration process. Richard Lidh was our Local Vendor Chair and Photography Chair. Richard did a great

job organizing the vendor room and worked hard to take care of the vendors needs throughout the conference. He seemed to be everywhere taking photographs and brought along his daughter Rebecca Lidh to help. John Hargrave was our Local Training Chair and Scholarship Chair. John is actually a member of the Los Angeles Chapter, but he eagerly volunteered to take on these two committees that are dear to his heart. John was the driving force behind the creation of the SAWE training program. He also had a big hand in getting the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo students to participate in SAWE confer-ences, which made the selection of this school to be the recipient of our Host

Chapter Scholarship Award an easy choice. Erin Burgess was an integral member of the Registration and Training Committees. Erin came to our regional conference last fall and she immediately jumped in and helped. She was also a member of the L.A. Chapter, but we were thrilled to find out during the course of the conference that she decided to transfer to our chapter. Welcome, Erin! Tom Koonce was

our Publicity Chair and the other key member of our Registration Committee. Tom is a bundle of energy and he helped out with a large variety of tasks. Gail Maijala was our Events Chair and Fund-raiser Chair. Her hard work and attention to detail was critical to the success of these events and we received many compli-ments from people that attended. Gail organized the incredibly successful International Scholarship Fundraiser. She organ-ized a similar fundraiser at our regional conference last fall that allowed our chapter to donate $1,000 to the scholarship fund. Gail accepted the challenge to obliterate that number and we’re proud to announce that we brought in over $2,500! Teresa Valentine helped Gail organize and host the guest events and the fundraiser. She graciously hosted many of our committee meetings. Teresa and Gail also had to live with the Conference Co-Chairmen (separately of course) which we’re sure became tougher and tougher as the conference approached! The dedicated effort of these individuals not only made this conference enjoyable, they made this conference possible.
