Why Do We Believe that The Bible is an Inspired Book?
I do not know how much we are aware of the importance of the Bible for our faith. I am going to write in the bulletin some topics related to Bible. Hence here is my first topic about “Inspiration” of the Bible. For Christians, the ultimate source of authority for what we believe is the Bible. But when we read the Bible or hear it referred to as “the written Word of God”, how do we know that it has been divinely inspired? What exactly is “Inspiration”? Inspiration can be defined as the mysterious process by which God worked through human writers employing their individual personalities and styles to produce authoritative truth about God. What we mean by Biblical Inspiration is that the authors and editors of the Bible were led or influenced by God with the result that their writings would be acknowledged as the word of God. Even though human persons wrote the Books of the Bible, the ultimate author of the Bible is God Himself. God has worked through the Holy Spirit to inspire human persons to reveal His ways and truths. Biblical Inspiration is qualitatively different from the kind of inspiration that comes from a work of art or when a musician composes a song or when an author writes a book. There are two elements of Biblical inspiration, which make it unique.
1. The Biblical inspiration is the result of “Revelation”. For example, in his epistle to the Galatians, Paul writes, “I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ” (Galatians 1:11). All other forms of inspiration, whether writing a book or composing a song are simply the products of human intelligence and creativity. 2. Secondly, it is doctrinally and morally authoritative. Bible is our rule of faith and the standard by which we measure and evaluate all things. Hence let us duly honor the Bible and read regularly or at least whenever time permits, so that we may experience the love of God revealed through the written Word of God.
