year, 1966-67, shall we look ahead (with our past year as a guideline) and set som e goals for ourselves?
My them e, a s President, has been COMMUNICATION. I am sure you will all agree, without COMMUNICATION, we are nothing, so how best can we com m unicate? For the next several New s I am going to pinpoint com m unication and its results.
With a backward glance le t’s think about ACCOMPLISHMENT THROUGH COMMUNICATION.
Last year w e grew to number over 2800; we chartered 10 new chapters; while there w as no record kept, I am sure w e added m any new ratings; participated in varied flying activities; created interest in flying by taking m any for their first plane ride, through our Penny-a-Pound projects; gave three deserving and lucky 99s the Am elia Earhart Scholarship with which they will upgrade the flying; gained new friends through the Powder Puff Derby; review ed our acom plishm ents by giving and receiving our yea r’s activity at convention in Seattle.
Without the ability to com m unicate, none of those activ ities would have been accom plished. So now with a
rew year ready for our use let’s think of other things we might accom plish through good com munications . . . to nam e a few; New Horizons, Growth, Im provem ent, Strength, Smooth F lying . . . all this, through com m unication! Let each one of us use our time w isely for the betterm ent of the Ninety - Nines.
Sum m er is such a lazy, let-down tim e of year. We let things get relaxed and unhurried . . . bul com es the day of reckoning! Fall arrives and we are in the hustle o f activ ities . . . and it is no different for m e. I have a very busy schedule outlined for Septem ber and October . . . Section M eetings and v isiting with Chapters are the main point of m y schedule. So I am looking forward to seeing YOU soon.
Be sure your Chapter sends in it's report each month . . . others enjoy reading of your activities. P lan to participate in all your Chapter and Section functions . . . you will gain from it. And of course, it is never too soon to start your plans for attending the International Convention . . . W ashington, D.C., la st w eek of June, 1967.

This past year our activ ities have been based on the thought of a flight. We take flights for several different reasons . . . to relax, to get aw ay from it all, to m eet with friends, fly m ercy journeys . . . but m ost important, to get som ewhere, to reach a goal or destination.
The Flight 99 for 1965-66 is now on the ground and we are at the destination. Conversation directly following a trip usually goes som ething like this: “What w as our fuel consum ption?” , “ what w as our ground sp eed ?” , or w e talk about one particularly beautifu l site over which w e flew . In other words, we rem inisce. So, le t’s rem inisce ju^t a bit.
The facts and figures of this flight are m ost interesting. I flew m y Bonanza 5865J 1 9 9 hours, traveled 27,814 m iles, attended 7 Section m eetings and presented 7 Charters. Our m em bership totals just over 2800, representing 93 Charters, 11 Sections and 21 Countries.
Our m em bers ihave flown over both oceans, circled the world, set altitude records, conducted races and served on the Federal Aviation Advisory Comm ittee.
Som e of the m ore pleasant aspects of F light 99 for me, personally, included the opportunities to present charters to new, enthusiastic Chapters, m eet new m em bers, attend Section M eetings and greeting Sheila Scott when she m ade Phoenix one of her stops on her Round-the-World flight. B eing the recipient of m any thoughtful gestures, lovely corsages, the sapphire setting for m y 99 ring, your gracious hospitality, kind thank you notes, pictures of events . . . has m ade this year a m em orable experience.
The goal of our F light 99 has been “ Communication” , without which we could not exist. Communication m akes the difference between su ccess and failure. The ability to com m unicate has m ade our world a m uch sm aller place in Which to live and has given us a greater understanding of our fellow m an. The inability to com m unicate has brought disaster, m isunderstanding and failure.
Communication m eans m ore than being able to “talk” . We com m unicate Constantly In our appearance, our walk, our attitudes, our actions. What
kind of im pressions are we m aking as Ninety-Nines?
Are we noisy when w e Should be quiet . . . are we talking when we should be listening . . . are w e com plaining when we should be helping . . . are w e criticising when we should be carrying the load? When things go wrong, do w e do what we can to get the problem straightened out . . . or do w e let it go down the drain and then blam e som eone e lse? R em em ber, all this is com m unication in one form or another. H ave we attained our goal . . . have w e really com m unicated ?
Most o f m y com m unications have been very enjoyable, but a ll was not smooth . . . a s with m any flights, this one ran into rough air early in June when we w ere informed, without notice, that our H eadquaters Secretary had resigned in favor of m atrim ony. So an unplanned trip to Oklahom a City w as on m y agenda. With the help of Arlene Walkup, Jane Abbot and Susie Sewell, w e got the tapes and letters out that should have been out three w eeks sooner. Then Dottie Young, your N ew s Editor, held down the fort until the 23rd, at which tim e D arla Bullard becam e our new Secretary.
You, a s N inety N ines, opened up a new experience for m e . . . new friendships, travel, challenge and helped m e to grow, personally, by e lecting m e to an office which has dem anded se lf discipline, thought and action. There w ere decisions to m ake which w ere not alw ays 'easy, but with the resolving of each one, found m e a little better for the wear.
This past year, while it has been work, h as really been m y pleasure and I Ithank you for the privilege of serving you a s your President.

When I w as asked Ho write this, I w as told it should be sim ilar to the history sent out with each candidates nomination, but it could be m ore personal . . . so am going to be m ore personal.
Chas, m y 49%‘er, and I will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary next month. We are b lessed with two children (hardly seem s right to call them children, since they are both grown and m arried), and w e have five grandchildren.
Chas and I have an a ir conditioning business and tor the past five years our son has also been associated with us.
M usic is a very important part of m y life as I served as Choir Director of Palm croft Baptist Church for six years and now act as substitute organist (when I ’m hom e).
Am a m em ber of Epsilon Sigm a Alpha and held tde office of Treasurer of the Alpha Sigm a Chapter. Found I couldn’t do justice Ito two organizations, and since the Ninety-Nines is m y first love, have not held a sorority office for three years.
I started fly in g at the prodding of my husband, February, 1953. Got m y P rivate license in June, 1953, after a solo cross country from Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, to Phoenix.
W as invited to a 99 m eeting that sam e month (good com m unication and good m em bership chairm an) and becam e a m em ber in July, 1953. Entered m y first air race, with Claire W alters as Co-pilot. Whalt a n experien ce!! I have flown all blit two TAR’s since then land m ust adm it that the thrill of placing 2nd in 1955 w as greater than the thrill of winning in 1957.
Had 'the fun of winning the first M ichigan SMALL R ace which followed the TAR Term inus in 1956.
I have held the office of Treasurer, Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the Phoenix Chapter; Treasurer, Vice-
Governor of the Southwest Section; Treasurer, V ice-President and P resident of International. A lso served three years a s W ays and M eans Com m ittee Chairman.
The Nindty-Nines and flying have done m ore for m e than any other organization or association. Perhaps I feel about flying a little differently than you . . . but to m e it has opened up a new appreciation of m y surrounding, given m e new friendships, and I hope to be able to rtiare th is experience.

Personal history: Beicaue a 99 Mem- be-r-at-Large in 1939. Helped start the Colorado Chapter in 1941. D ates m e— but w as first wom an in Colorado to hold a license. Worked as a secretary at a D enver flight school to earn flight tim e where I m et Johnny M eyers, an aerial photographer for the Forestry Service, and m arried him in 1939. Johnny m eanw hile acquired his com m ercial and instructor ratings, gave up the aerial photography job to instruct for Ray Wilson, Inc. Our boss m oved his flight fam ily to Chickasha, Oklahoma, during the War to operate an Arm y P rim ary F light School — later w e returned to D enver where the boss inaugurated an airline — now known as Frontier Airlines.
49% er Johnny and I were with the airline when it started — he is now Director of F light Operations. I retired in 1951 to becom e a housew ife—which is a bit of a joke am ong friends and F rontier’s Personnel Office, who say I a m the m ost perm anent tem porary em ployed secretary they have—seem s I am called back to fill in for vacations and as extra help.
Since I “retired” , m y husband states he can ’t keep m e hom e — I fly anywhere, anytim e I can.
Hobbies: We are avid autom obilerace fans, Will attend our 12th “500” race in Indianapolis this year, go to the Phoenix races tw ice a year and
enjoy a little photography on the side. I enjoy writing a bit — and have the rejection slips to prove it!

An enduring rom ance w as innocently sparked for m e by an older brother with a yen to fly. He dragged m e to a Civil Air Patrol m eeting in the Chicago suburbs and I w a s hooked. Throughout m y last two years in high school, I becam e an “airport bum ” every weekend anxiously aw aiting a 10-minute ride ’round the patch.
The offer o f an aviation program by tthe Univ. of Oklahoma set the course tor further education. My parents provided $280 for a private license a t the U niversity flight school. Honest, that’s w hat a 35-hour course in an Aeronca cost in 1956!
With the private accom plished, the decision had to be m ade whether it would be aviation or further college as there w eren’t funds for both. There rea lly w as no question. I raced through approved flight courses and had a com m ercial and flight instructor’s rating ait 160 hours. I then began teaching im m ediately to “reverse flow ” the balance of paym ents.
The D irector of the OU flight departm ent stuck his neck w ay out to hire m e a s the U niversity’s first fe m ale and youngest flight instructor— all in one package. He also urged m e to continue m y education, so I worked m y w ay through college teaching flying, and 6 Yz years after I started, earned m y degree.
About this tim e, there w as much talk of the astronaut research program involving wom en, and a s a re
suit of wanting to participate I becam e the 25th and last wom an to take the astronaut physical. The 13 who passed were invited to P ensacola for further testing and when I w as not a llowed tim e off from m y job, I quit to participate in 'the research program . History records that le s s than a week before m y departure date, the tests w ere cancelled perm anently.
My instructing continued in Oklahom a after the “astronaut ep isode” , but I m oved to Oklahoma State Univ. 1 w as beginning to grow restless with the realization m y 1,500 hours flying tim e were practically all confined to the 'traffic pattern. I knew every blade of grass in the area — and, a little w ater to, a s I acquired a seaplane rating at Stillwater, Okla.
My application arrived at Beech Aircraft Corp. just a s they w ere introducing the M usketeer. I reasoned their one girl pilot had been so well accepted, they m ight just take ,a chance on another. So, Joyce Case Funsch and I w ere the two girls participating in the 3 M usketeers Tour in 1962. We covered 40,000 m iles in 90 days and could write a whole book about the trip. I spent the following year Travelling around the country dem onstrating the Musketeer, getting checked out in the rest of the Beech line, and acquiring m y instrum ent and m ulti - engine ratings.
Then Cupid shot his arrow — hard! Bob Jessen, who has been at Beech ten years in various capacities in the sa les departm ent, and I w ere m arried in 1964 just as he w as assigned m anager of the M usketeer program . It w as decided that I should not work directly for m y husband so I am no longer assigned to a specific airplane, though I do m anage to work w ith Bob “on loan” Occasionally. My duties include handling flight school m aterial for our distributor organization; gathering and dispensing flying club information; a n d investigating new areas for Beeohcraft participation in aerospace education. On the road, m y activ ities include participation in m any la d ies’ program s (m ostly through speaking engagem ents); g iving sales dem onstrations; flying photo m issions for our advertising dept ; attending National aviation organization program s and conventions; and representing Beech in local flying promotions. I also serve on the FAA W om en’s
Advisory Com m ittee and, in m y spare tim e, am leader for the W ichita Wing Scouts,
My flying has taken m e to each sta te m any tim es with the exception of A laska (which I begrudge terribly) and H awaii, plus a sm attering of the Islands, M exico .and Canada. Bob and I anxiously look forwrd to seeing m any m ore p laces from the air and continue m eeting m any wonderful p e o p l e through flying. W e’re convinced that aviation offers the happiest, fullest, and m ost rewarding w ay of life possible.

Transcribers, Inc. Our group’s chief accom plishm ent w as getting the blind children out of “ isolated institutions” into the City “sighted schools” . The San Francisco unified school district then directed the group to braille the text - books for these blind students. From first grade to junior high school, w e supply m ath, m usic, foreign language and E nglish brailled books. One printed text-book transcribes into from one to tw enty-five volum es of braille. We also shellac and bind these books.
F or security in our old age, Fred and I invented in an apartm ent house in the B ay area. It aged us considerably in renovating it! But w e have becom e expert plasterers, painters, tile- setters, plumbers, carpet layers and carpenters. Otherwise, I work a t tem porary jobs; telephone and PBX operator, dictaphone transcribing, filing, etc., and thanks to Susie Sewell, am becom ing a double entry bookkeeper.
M y private license flight test was taken on Novem ber 2, 1929. (Note the date — too la te to be a Charter M em b er!). P ilot’s license No. 10211 has been a proud possession ever since and m em bership in The N inety-Nines, from April 1930 to date, has been a personal, pleasurable satisfaction. H o w e v e r President A lice Roberts requested the m em bers of the E xecu tive Board to te ll about one’s activ ities odtside The Ninety-N ines and aviation fields.
My fam ily consists of 49%er Fred, an autom obile m an all his life, except for his service in the Air Force; our daughter, M arsha, a student at Sacram ento State College, w ith a teacher’s credential in mind; and one sa ssy Siam ese cat, Frosty, eight pounds of dlainty fem ininity.
Our hom e in San F rancisco, w est of Twin P eaks, 10 blocks e a st of the P acific Ocean, 10 blocks North df the Zoo, 10 blocks South of Golden Gate Park, is on the northern and western flight patterns of SFO. From the picture windows we see Farralone Islands and traffic on land, sea and in the air.
Hobbies; Collect wild gam e recipes, as F red loves to hunt but w ill not kill unless I can cook the gam e . . . and brailling. This is a m ost rewarding hobby. Since 1954 I have been a certified volunteer braille transcriber and a m em ber of the Golden Gate B raille

B eing m arried to a doctor (Erst nam e “ Cornie” ) who seem ed to practice m edicine so he might fly, found m e flying with him if I did not w ish to be left behind. In 1953, after years of gentle hints, the pressure w as brought to bear—“ I m ust at least learn to land the airplane.” I vowed this w as all I would do; but prodded every step of the w ay by m y husband, m y instructor and friends around the airport, finally in self defense I took the flight test in 1954 and earned a P rivate lic e n se .
Then the fun really began. The sky w a s our highway. The horizon always beckoned. B ursts of work at home w ere interludes to planning how to get aw ay and where to go. The log book b ecam e filled with strange letters, som e m ore frequent than others -— PDX, PDT, ALW, BOI, COS, MDW, PHX (and it did not rain every single lim e, A licee), TUS', LAX, SFO, MZT, MZL, MEX, etc. F ive winters in a row w e left the plane behind and cam e hom e on airlines or trains. But I w as
flying, seeing the United States, Canada, M exico, Cuba, tlhe B aham as and Puerto Rico from and by air.
With this a w ay of life it w as natural that The Ninety-Nines should also be a part of m y life. I joined ir, 1954 and becam e 1a Charter M em ber of the E astern W ashington Chapter when it w as organized in 1955.
Last October we took a Chartered Airliner to the International Congress of Otolaryngology m eeting ir. Tokyo. I had a fascinating v isit while there, with two of our International 99s, Y a e Nozo- ki, D irector of W om en’s Aeronautic Association of Japan, and Hideko Yoko- yam a, chief pilot for an Aviation busin ess she operates with her husband. Both of these g irls speak English and the afternoon with them w as the highlight o f the trip for me.
During the past eleven years we la v e logged several thousand hours in various planes — Stinson, T ri-Pacer and Comanches. Other hobbies such as golf, bridge and knitting seem to have suffered BUT — F ly in g is much m ore fun with the interesting people and far aw ay places. Our latest long junket w as in April when we went to Puerto Rico, Southbound out of Ft. Lauderdale w e RON’d at South Caicos, an experience we would not have m issed for anything. The next day a tantalizing glim pse of the Dom inican Republic and on to San Juan.
Home again I settled down to w elcom e all of you to the P acific Northw est for the International Convention and the Start of the Powder Puff D erby.

I had never been inside a hospital when the chairm an of our w om an’s league inform ed m e that I would obtain m y serv ice hours by working three hours a w eek at Phoebe Putney M emorial Hospital in Albany, Ga. The year w as 1935. Now, 30 years late", I ’m consulting on m edical records for
so m any clients that I have to fly to see a ll of them .
After taking the Phoebe Putney a ssignm ent — in due tim e the hospital superintendent offered m e a job. For the next seven years I did the m edical record work. Then cam e the war and we went to Jacksonville, F la ., where m y husband w as to be stationed as a Coast Guard officer.
I took a job teaching school. True to form I w as m iserable. It w asn’t m y first try a t it. A nurse who lived in the sam e house with us encouraged m e to take a job at St. V incent’s. Alice Christian, RRL at St. V incent’s, said one day, “Why don’t you get reg istered?” For seven years I had been busy with m edical records but had never heard of the AAMRL! So I studied, and with A lice’s long hours of coaching - I passed the exam ination. The acquisition of two college degrees sim ply didn’t rank with m y pride and delight in the RRL that I earned.
Two years as surgical secretary at St. V incent’s w as topped by a year in the W omen’s Arm y Corp a s a noncom m issioned officer in charge of m edical records at Camp Butner Arm y General Hospital, Durham, N. C.
When the war ended, I returned to find Phoebe w asn’t the sam e 25-bed hospital. Over the yea rs it has expanded to som e 290 beds and now were building a new hospital. Concepts and m ethods changed in m edical records and the AAMRL grew in scope. I went to workshops and conferences, including the F irst International Congress in London. I becam e secretary and then a vice-president in the AAMRL.
In 1948, when m atching F ederal funds produced a rash Pf sm all hospitals all over the South, I took to the highway to teach the Staffs m edical record procedures. My schedule called for five days a w eek at Phoebe and a weekend of 500 to 600 m iles traveling to other hospitals. B esides hating to drive, som e two years of this and m y husband w as threatening to sw ap m e in on a new m odel.
In 1951 1 decided flying m ight be a solution. A tall, thin, sad m an undertook to teach m e. When we parted com pany, he had quite a lot of gray hair and I had a private license. And I had a new love that has proved to be an enduring one. The combination
—of m edical records, with its dem ands; and flying—which dem ands another type of alertness and proficiency and develops another set of skills —has kept m e on m y toes.
M edical records-cum -flying a lso opened another rewarding vocation to m e —Civil Air Patrol and Aerospace Education. N ever an intrepid pilot, I sought any m eans availab le to upgrade m y flying proficiency. Onie such m eans w as an “aviation” workshop at the U niversity of Colorado. It turned out to be an aviation education’ workshop sponsored by the CAP. I returned with a new interest which is still very m uch a part o f m y life. I now vary m y m edical record workshops and speaking engagem ents with talks to c iv ic clubs and college-level areospace workshops and som etim es instruct in these workshops.
The past 13 years flying hais becom e so m uch of an asset to m e that I have found it valuable to be checked out in som e 15 aircraft, to get single and m ulti-engine ratings, a com m ercial license and flight instructor rating plus an a ir taxi certificate. I have just com pleted an FA A /C A P Flight Instructor Orientation Course at Oklahom a City.
I had the good fortune of being the first wom an to com plete the USAF War College non-resident course in connection with m y CAP interests. It took about four years. Prior to com pleting the course, I had taken the officer candidate extension course of the Air Force Institute and also the USAF squadron officer course (m y rank is now Lt. Colonel) and had attended the Command and Staff School. M any phases oif m y Air F orce academ ic work have contributed greatly to m y know-how in m edical record sc ience.
B etw een the two activities, m edical records and flying, I have garnered an incredible number of rewards. I began m y flying in 1955 at Fort M yers, Florida. My first lesson w as on January 10th. I soloed on January 20, 1955 and have been “flying” ever since. R eceived m y P rivate license in M ay 1955 and joined the 99s one year later. Have been Secretary and Vice-Governor of the N ew York-New Jersey Section and just com pleted m y second 'term as Governor. W as co- chairm an of the term inus for the Powder Puff Derby, Atlantic City, in 1961 \and Chairman of the International Flying A ctivities Com m ittee 1963-64.

During the Aviation Space W riters Association Convention in M ay of 1963, learned 'to fly a Bell Helicopter, soloed in seven hours within 2% days. Two months later becam e first wom an to rece iv e a FAA rotorcraft-helicopter license in N ew York state. Am No. 59 in the worldwide organization of licensed wom en helicopter pilots, The Whirly-Girls.
W as honored to be awarded the coveted Lady G race H ay Drummond- H ay Trophy in 1963 by the W omen’s International Association of Aeronautics and to be the first wom an to fly the Lockheed Jet Star. My husband, Henry, w as one of the founders of Seaboard World Airlines. He served as V ice-President of Engineering and Director of M aterials and is now retained a s a consultant to the airline. Daughter Charlene (27) has soloed and our 21 year old son, Rennie, a student at the University of Florida, is w ell on his w ay to acquiring a private license.
I just recently accepted a job as Sales (Brantly & H ushes) for Hel-Aire Copters, Ltd., Midtown Heliport, New York City. As this goes to press, should be enroute from Frederick, Okla. to New York City in a Brantly 305 — the first to be delivered for operation in the N ew York M etropolitan area.
I am honored to be a m em ber of your E xecutive Board and feel that January day in 1955 opened up a whole new wonderful world and a wealth of friends and acquaintances.

July 29, 1966 B y now you have read of the tragic
death of our m em ber Doris Mullen, Whirly-Girl No. 84, her co-pilot Dr. G eorge Bard and her passengers Tony and Betty Lem a on Sunday, July 24th when her plane crashed on a force
landing on a golf course. One observer said: “The Pilot w as a hero. The plane sw erved to the 'left—‘if it didn’t a lot of people would have been hurt.”
Doris started flying in 1961 and held single and m ulti-engine, m ulti-engine sea , instrum ent and glider ratings. After m ore than 1300 hours in fixed- wing, she got her com m ercial helicopter rating on February 2, 1965. She and her flying physician husband—W ylie— becam e our 12th husband-wife helicopter team . On February 14, 1966, Doris qualified for her helicopter instructor’s rating. In M ay of this year, she received her Glider instructor rating.
In iher com paratively short career a s a com m ercial helicopter pilot, Doris did a lot of flying for her husband’s fixed-base operation at Joliet Airport. Som e of the highlights were Santa Clause drops, piloting the Sheriff in a hunting-shooting round-up of elks loose in the area, on cam era for Chicago color TV and promotional work with World Book Encyclopedia.
Doris talked helicopters before Rotary and science clubs, w as interviewed in several national m agazines, worked to establish hopsital heliports in her com m unity—all this—and a
wonderful hom em aker and m other to her four teen agers—Denny (20) private pilot and pre-med student at University of W isconsin — Barbara (19) college freshm an and Nancy (17) and Suzie (15) in high school.
Many of The Whirly-Girls m et Doris and W ylie when she cam e to Washington for our 10th Anniversary “Hovering” and again this year during The Am erican H elicopter Society Forum. Others m ay have m et her when she flew solo in the 1965 Powder Puff Derby.
When we heard the news, Danna Henderson (Whirly-Girl No. 31) and I discussed what we might do as Whirly- Girls and decided a flight scholarship would be the kind of a m em orial Doris would like. W ylie concurred so, without tim e to get your approval, the following telegram w as sent:

As soon as the details for the administration of the scholarship are determ ined, a press release announcing the scholarship can be distributed. It is fe lt the resulting annual competition and selection of the winner w ill generate national interest and publicity.
You m ay recall, in 1955, two of the organizing objectives of The Whirly- Girls w ere to interest wom en in helicopters and to establish a helicopter flight scholarship. Therefore, Danna and I felt that the m em bers would agree that the Doris Mullen Whirly- Girls Scholarship would aid in achieving these objectives.

The Montana Chapter of the 99s, Inc., chose Sat., Aug. 6, a s the date for the B ig Sky R ace No. 3. The type of race selected by the race com m ittee w as a N avigational Skill and General F lying knowledge race rather than speed. All 17 airplanes entered in the race w ere in G lasgow and had been checked by DON WRIGHT from the Billings FFA by early afternoon.

R ace Packets with instructions for the first leg of the 450 m ile trip were distributed at the airport briefing by co-chairm en of the race, PEARL MAGILL and BEV. LEDBETTER, on Saturday morning. Takeoff position w as according to aircraft speed and at 7:30, 17 airplanes lined up in a light shower of rain ready to race.

At the Jordon stop, VIV SCHRANK, who w as unable to race, w as in charge of having each pilot pre-flight an airplane which w as on display with 10 possible item s for correction. The winners of this test — it ended 'in a tie between BETTY NUNN and RHODA JOHNSON — flipped a coin for the engraved plaque presented to the winners by ithe M ontana Aeronautics Com
m ission at each stop. BETTY won the plaque and RHODA received a travel .alarm clock.
The 2nd leg of the flight w as from Jordon to Mjalta where each airplane w as graded on their traffic pattern at a field w ith no radio com m unication. H ere a lso they took a written test where tim e w as a factor in the grading. The over-all winner at Malta w as MARY STEVENSON who received a MAC plaque and a m iniature windsock which seem ed quite appropriate since the windsock w as the only m ethod ctf knowing the way to land at this (airport.
The third leg from M alta to Roundup included check points along the proper heading, ETA on approaching Roundup and a written test on E m ergency Ground to Air Signals. This test proved to be quite a stickler to rnlany. There w as one test with 100 percent on it. ELSIE CHILDS had no doubt been studying. The MAC plaque w as awarded to her. The ETA w as won by MARY JORDON who tim ed it exactly.
A spdt landing w as the finish of the race at Lewistown. A direct hit “on the spot” gave NIKI W EAVER from Worland, Wyo., a MAC plaque.

B esides that, she belatedly received a lovely trophy, “M ost Proficient Woman Pilot of the Y ear,” which should have been given to her at the Aero C lassic in Palm Springs, Calif., but which som ehow ended up in St. Louis with STERLING K ENNEDY, well-known NPA race official.
Another Cape Girardeau m em ber, MARY ELDERS, from Cuba, Mo., and her 49%er, FRANK, won third place honors in a C-172. Our own DOROTHY
HAUPT and KIT HEACOCK captured fourth place. DOROTHY WARREN and CINDY MORRIS of the D allas Chapter won fifth place. They were all flying Cessna 172s which is an interesting fact for those who hope to fly in races using the particular proficiency form ula which w as originated by STERLING KENNEDY of St. Louis Aero Club.

Another Powder Puff Derby has gone down in history. WCBS-TV, who are now in the process of com piling and editing the docum entary film taken of our 20th Anniversary Air Race, w ere so p leased with their unofficial entry No. 92 and with the cooperation of the racers enroute that they have donated $500.00 to the AE Fund in appreciation of the Powder Puff Derby and the 99s.
There w as m uch favorable response to the greatest change in this year’s race — the fly-by.
AWTAR w ishes to thank heartily the g irls in the W estern Washington Chapter rnd assisting Chapters for the w ay they handled the start of the race and those from the Suncoast and assisting Chapters working on the term inus in Clearwater. Their jobs were compounded by the delayed start of the race resulting in the necessary changes in plans and program ming. This unforseen turn of events caused all concerned to work against odds and obstacles beyond the call of duty.
Dr. Warren Brown from the Clearwater area wanted to give a n icely fram ed picture of A m elia Earhart to AWTAR. However, it w as felt by the board m em bers that this should be in 99 Headquarters for all to enjoy. The picture w as presented to A lice Roberts, President, who accepted it for the 99s, and it w as delivered to Headquarters by Joyce Funsch, K ansas Chapter.

While talk of the 20th Anniversary P P D subsides and before that of the 21st g e ts started, I ’ll take this opportunity to catch up on the new s of the side lines. The Anniversary cacheted envelopes were a com plete sell out. A m ost successfu l venture. Our thanks go to E velyn Zirkind of Teaneck, N .J., who is a professional at this sort of thing. The covers w ere advertised in philatelic m agazines and in June she arranged for a Powder Puff Derby booth at the F irst Aeropex International Airm al and Aerospace Exhibition held in Albert H all of the Ameri-
cana Hotel in N ew York City, June 10- 12. There were unique exhibits of aero- mautica, telling the story of aviation from the balloon to the rocket of today in displays on loan from som e of the leading European m useum s. We are m ost grateful to Herbert R osen, Director of this aerophilatelic exhibition for his cooperation. Ruth Du- breScu manned our booth with the a s sistance of M artha Morrison, Kay Brick and daughter “Bunny” . Ruth m ade a huge m ap showing the route of the P PD and a poster depicting wom en in aviation. Barbara B oem er, Susan Verdi and Donna F lam , three 66s from Long Island also helped m an the booth. All this w as whipped up on two days notice.
The first showing of the CBS documentary of the 20th Anniversary Pow der Puff Derby in the N ew York area will be a half hour P art 1 on Channel 2, Sun., Septem ber 25, a t 6:30 p.m. This w ill be repeated on the following Sat. a t 3:30 p.m. P art 2, at this tim e, is scheduled for October 2nd. This episode w ill be repeated the following Sat., October 8th, at 3:30 p.m . This is expected to be syndicated so check your local TV program s for showings in your area.
Compliments lhave been com ing in from the control tow ers along the race roulte on the w ay the Powder Puffers handled their radio procedures and pattern work. H ere is a quote typical of those from the FAA personnel. “We found the new tim ing method highly superior to the old. A t a busy field such a s Fairfax, the race could be worked in without too m uch disruption to other traffic. Ground control didn’t have to have everybody ‘hit the dirt’ so a race plane could taxi by. The High Speed P a sse s did not interfere as much with traffic as the Mad Dash Landings. Tower and FAA personnel repeatedly voiced the opinion that they much preferred the r.ew m ethod”.
The start of the 1967 R ace w ill be from Bader F ield in Atlantic City handled by the Garden State Chapter, Gay Mayer, Chapter Chairman. Long Beach Chapter with Judy W agner, Chairman, will handle the finish at Torrance, California, just in ca se an y of you are already m aking plans to buck those head winds.

Shelter Island w as a busy place on Saturday, August 6th. Twenty-three airplanes and ninety-four people descended on AGNES and AMBROSE HAVEY for our sum m er fly-in. The food w as delicious, everybody had a m arvelous tim e, and our gratitude goes to the HAVEY’S for once again opening their airstrip and their sum m er home to us.
We were pleased to have as a guest a t the fly-in NANCY BIRD WALTON, an Australian m em ber on her way back from England. NANCY just re ceived The Most Excellerit Order of the British Em pire, OBE. Another Australian m em ber, RHONDA STEWART, is arriving in the N ew York area Septem ber 28th and w e’re all looking forward to m eeting her.
We’re proud that DORIS RENNIN- GER is now a m em ber of the Iriter- national E xecutive B o a r d. On her w ay back from Seattle DORIS stopped a t Edwards Air Force B ase, Lockheed and North Am erican and got a good look at all the new planes being developed.
KAY BRICK ferried a Cherokee 140 up from Vero Beadh, and RUTH BLISS brought up a Cherokee C. RUTH w as home from her ferrying trip all of four hours before she left on a charter flight 'to Chicago.
BETTY PATTON has earned her glider rating. She has 21 hours flight tim e, one flight lasting an hour and 10 minutes. DORIS M ADDEN is the proud owner of a new Cessna 150. DORIS flies out of Red Bank Airport. I t’s alw ays nice to report new ratings and new aircraft. Congratulations to both BETTY and DORIS.

F irst som e im portant dates for the Fall. On Saturday, Septem ber 10th, w e’ll have a fly-in brunch from 10 until 12 a t Bobelt airport (273° radial out of Kingston VOR). Rain date, Sunday the 11th — and our Penny-a-Pound is set for Long Island-M acArthur airport on Saturday, October 29th (rain date Sunday the 30th) from 11 a.m . until 5 p.m. Along with the airlift there will be parachute jumping; a static display including antique airplanes and parachute packing; and souvenir photos and “first ride” certificates. It prom ises to be a lot iolf fun and we hope to see a s m any of you there as possible.

Chapter Chairman HAZEL BARTO- LET and husband BILL flew to Seattle, Washington, in their Comanche to attend the Ninety-Nine Convention. HAZEL gave a very interesting report on the Convention activ ities and com m ended the people responsible for a job so well done.
Another of our Chapter m em bers who w as a lso fortunate to have been able to attend the Seattle Convention w as NAOMI STAHLNECKER. I haven ’t had a report directly from NAOMI pertaining to her trip but I understand from other sources that she a
greed with HAZEL that it w as a wonderful Convention.
CAROLYN HARROLIS with husband ■SOTER and daughter SUZANNE m ade a tour of several of the B aham a Islands in their own plane. They landed a t Freeport from there w ent to the Eleu'thera Islands and on to N assau spending several days at each place. T hey logged twenty-five hours flying tim e with approxim ately five hours IFR. CAROLYN reported a wonderful tim e had by all.
Saturday, August 13, the Chapter m eeting w as held a t the Harrisburg- York State Airport. Guest speaker w as JOHN McFARLANE of the Pennsylvania Aeronautics Com m ission who spoke about the State of Pennsylvania’s air marking plans. MARTY POOL from Harrisburg was w elcom ed into our Chapter as a new m em ber. IR ENE WIRTSCHAFTER from E astern Pennsylvania Chapter gave a very interesting report on this years Powder Puff Derby.deep in study and working hard! We are sorry to learn that we will soon be losing DOLORES LOWE to Houston, T exas. DOLORESE’S husband has transferred to Houston and DOLORESE and the children plan to follow soon.
BETTY McNABB continues to be our busiest m em ber. BETTY flew her Bonanza the 5,600 m ile round trip to Convention an June. She has m ade aerospace lectures at the University of Alabam a, U niversity of South Carolina, G eorgia Southern College and Middle T ennessee State University. She w as the featured speaker at Tenn essee and also spoke at the annual m eeting of the faculty of the Nursing H om e Records Institute in Chicago. She conducted one-day workshops in Eldorado, Arkansas, and Macon, Georgia.
We are proud to report that BETTY now has her CFL. She attended a ten- day T-34 course in Oklahoma City in August.
HOLLY SMITH, of Albany, is now working for Aero Commander. BETTY M cNABB has spent the sum m er — between 'trips — at her Panam a City hom e. The K ENNEDYS, HOWARD and CAROLYN, attended the Florida Aero Club Convention at Clearwater in August. Undaunted by IFR weather, they went as far as they could by Comanche and the rest of the w ay by rented auto.
FRANCES and JACK PEACOCK m ade a two w eeks trip here and yon in August, including Freeport, Grand Baham a, where they v isit friends frequently. M any of our m em bers have m ade flying vacation trips th is sum m er.
This issue reports the conclusion of the Chapter year. Septem ber 1st starts a new year with new goals. The Georg ia Chapter is proud of a successful
year and reelected the sam e officers to carry on through next year.

JESSIE is back hom e again after having served as an instructor in the Aerospace Education Workshop June 13-July 10 at Middle Tennessee State University. DR. BELAR SMOTHER- MAN w as the D irector of the workshop.
Congratulations were really in order at this m eeting! PEGGY McCORMICK could not attend but w e saw her picture sporting a brand new Com m ercial license. DOT ETHERIDGE, racing in a Cessna Skylane in the Pow der Puff Derby, finished 11th (the highest scoring Cessna) and also picked up two leg awards along the way. The first and last of the 1966 Skylady Derby cam e to our Chapter—LUCILLE WOLFE, Pilot, with PEGGY McKIE, Co-Pilot, won 1st place in the Derby flying LUCILLE’S Cherokee 180C, and ESTHER HALL, Pilot, and JANET G REEN, Co-Pilot, “ won” the Tail End Tony award in EST H ER’S Cessna 182.
Our Chapter plans to be w ell represented at the Section M eeting in Atlanta in Septem ber. Section M eetings are valuable to a Chapter and its m em bers.

A good showing for the July m eeting in Painesville — CONNIE JONES, JANET GIBBS, JEAN KING hostessing. This w as the m eeting to catch up with all the IAR, TAR and Convention news. Quite a num ber of 99s, 49% ers and guests took in the Saturday night Skylark F lying Club’s hangar dance as well. What a perfect night flight hom e — extrem e clear, with a m yriad of sparkling city lights below. I truly enjoyed the smooth 30-miles across town with RUTH and MERRILL LOVE in their new Skylane.
First-tim e racers in the IAR JOANN STYPE and MILLIE KLAYMAN placed best of all the Ohio team s and were awarded beautiful pilot and copilot trophies by SOHIO (Standard Oil Company of Ohio) a t the banquet. A rewarding experience.
It w as a great pleasure to have had a phone conversation with British 99 JOAN HUGHES, recently, when she w as in Cleveland to prom ote the film, “The B lue M ax” . M any of the sam e pilots, JOAN included, who did the flying for the “ M agnificent Men in their F ly ing M achines” again flew in “The Blue M ax” .
All-Ohio just lost two m em bers, PAT HUDGENS and SKIP GUMBERT, both of Lexington, Kentucky, becam e Charter M em ber of the new Kentucky B luegrass Chapter. July 23rd w as the long-awaited for occasion — the Charter presentation, and truly it w as m ost gratifying and a great honor for EDY MAXIM, on behalf of The Ninety- Nines, Inc., to present the Charter to NORMA WORLAND, Chapter Chairm an. FLO and DOC BOND packed in a lot of air m iles on a recent weekend — Cleveland to B iloxi and return. This accom plished in spite of numerous thunderstorm s and extrem e haze, which set over all of eastern U.S.
A sim ilarity with our two newest m em bers — MARY WHELAN (Cleveland) and KAREN TROFIMOV (Chagrin F alls). In both cases, flying lessons becam e a fam ily affair, and w ives and husbands earned those private licenses about the sam e tim e. KAREN and IVAN now have their own “150” and w ere off on their longest cross-country recently. This an 8- day vacation to Cape Cod, and the first one m inus the children. From the July m eeting, MARY and ROD WHELAN flew a M ooney on to Dulles to pick up their duaghter from Be- thesda, Maryland.
PAULINE EK has been logging a great deal o f tim e since she and ART acquired their “172” . PAULINE just earned her instrum ent ticket and is now working for her com m ercial. ART is alm ost ready for his instrument. Both received their private license last Decem ber. F or them , a recent flying vaction included a trip to Arkansas.

Our 4914 ers surely enjoyed them selves. MILLIE LIMBAUGH’s 4914 er, RUSH, w as there with a ll his cam era equipment to record it all on film . He seem ed to have a ball, especia lly when the sw im suit parade m ade the scene.
BOB EVANS, M ARY’S 49!4er, w as the croquet king for the day, altho w e’re still wondering why he didn’t play on the croquet court. E ach tim e w e looked up, som e sw eet soul would send his ball flying, but not in the proper direction. — Lessons anyone?
NADINE H E U E R ’S 49!4er, ELM ER, w as there putting on a show at the pool. H e’s quite im pressive with his diving and Olympic style sw im m ing, and pretty good with the Poloroid too.
BOB FEIGENBAUM , LOIS’ 49!4er, put on an exhibition at the badminton court, and I ’d say that Bob falls very gracefully, Tennis anyone ?
And m y dear 49!4er, FRANK, is really a whirlwind with the horseshoes, by this I m ean that when he whirls them, goodness only knows where the wind will take them but, som e practice, we feel sure h e ’ll be able to throw them to the stake.

tion at their lake home in W isconsin. They bagged a 9 lb. Catfish and a 12 lb. M uskie. They w ere fortunate when the tornado hit Palw aukee Airport, with SALLY’S F lying School loosing only 2 planes, other w ere much less fortunate.
GERI and FR E D HALTON flew to D ale Hollow Lake, Ky., for a weekend of cam ping and fishing over Mem orial Day. F ish w ere scarce but at lea st the w eather cooperated. JOHN and VIRGINIA ROTH flew to the O- zarks M em orial weekend, along with a wonderful group from D uPage Airport. A good tim e w as had by all — the scenery and w eather were delightful.
HAROLD a n d EVA WHITE flew their new Debonair to Peoria, June 18th. They attended a wedding there. P assenger for the flight w as EVA’S 82 year old m other who enjoyed the flight very much. Debbie really performed, 42 rninues down and 39 com ing back. JOAN SCHOGER had the m isfortune of having all the radios stolen from her 172, back to the old point to point on the m ap flying.
TRACY PILARS, ALICE HAMMOND and yours truly flew to Galt Airport and treated several wounded veterans from Viet Nam to an air tour of the Northern Illinois, Southern Wisconsin lake area . H ELEN SAILER served as Chief NAA jud ge/tim er in Seattle at the start of AWTAR, then went on to Escondido, Calif., to v a cation with 99 HAZEL PETERSON and 49y2er GROVER.
RICK COOLEY and husband DICK, are starting to m ake plans for a hunting and m ovie m aking trip to Alaska in the near future in their Skym aster. The m aps have already been decorating their floor, and dining room table for the trip. It w ill be a little more enjoyable in the Skym aster than in the 182. In the m eantim e they are busy flying back and forth to their archery Mfg. plant in Oconto F alls, Wisconsin. VIRGINIA and GEORGE COFFEEN flew to Cape Giardeau on July 3rd to m eet the “ Powder Puff G irls” , however, they had not left Seattle and the COFFEENS w ere the only transient pilots at Cape Giardeau.
G erry K rause didn’t have enough flying after the Powder Puff Derby, w ent on to the B aham as for a visit, then to M iam i for a day. GERRY is proud of getting tier instrum ent ticket. P ut it to use on the w ay hom e from Chattanooga three w eeks to the day after receiv ing it. Yours truly and her
49 tier , JOHN, and five children also continued on to the B aham as after com pleting the derby in our trusty 206, N2151F, a s TAR No. 50. It w as a rea l w elcom e sight to see dad and the kids after ten days.
We in the Chicago Area are stunned from the shock of losing one of our dearest fellow 99s, DORIS MULLEN. She had been very busy flying charter during the airline strike — to Ror- chester with patients, Carbondale with educators, Sturgeon B ay with va ca tioners; had practied for and passed her six-m onth hood cheek in a D-18 Twin Beech, in 100 degree weather.
LOUISE and RAY KOKESH flew to Galt Airport on a progressive dinner but due to tornado warings no one showed up. LOUISE and RAY along with JOHN and VIRGINIA ROTH and MARIE and MIKE CRONIN spent two days working parking airplanes for the Antique Airplane Assoc, show at D uPage Airport. TONI TIEBER, BARBARA PENCE, GEN BOWMAN and ELEANOR PARK ER a lso helped out at the show.
MARGE and ART ANDERSON suffered loss of m ost o f their household effects and personal belongings in a tornado that struck Arlington H eights in June.

Most of the girls flew in for a delightful luncheon in th e very fine restaurant on the field. LOIS SHAFER, who has been m aking good use of her new Com m ercial license, brought as guests, FANNIE JENNINGS and JULIE CLUTES. When ROSE JOLY’S C172 woudn’t start, she and JANE NOYES and IR EN E RAWLINGS hitched a ride from Spirit of St. Louis airport with DR. KOMMS in h is plane, and cam e back in RUTH TAKSEL’S C-210. IR ENE RAWLINGS reports that her guest w as a m em ber from our San Antonio Chapter, an Arm y Nurse Counselor, attached now to the St. Louis Office — M ain Recruiting — a CAPTAIN LINDA L EE P. . . . KIT HEACOCK, after getting her Com m ercial rating and still working on her F light Instructor’s and Instructor’s Instrum ent ratings, has sw itched to acrobatic lessons. Her instructor, PINKY O PP who g iv es lessons at G am bill’s airport, has entered her in a show at Ottumwa, Iowa, Septem ber 3rd. W e’ll be routing for her.

SYLVIA’S 49 % er, LACK, has been honored by being awarded a scholarship to the U niversity of Colorado’s National College for State Trial Judges at Boulder, Colorado. He lis spending the month of August there—one of the thirty judges in the country to be so chosen.

On August 14th, we flew to Lake Okoboji for a beautiful Sunday Smorgasbord and sw im m ing and boating at the new Inn. Sum m er Lake residents, HARRIET OSTERMANN, LOIS GRANGE and DINNY PH IPPS hosted the affair, and w e had one of our better turn-outs, thanks to a kinder Old Man Weather.
Following dinner, PHYLLIS BARB E R and HAZEL SIGAFOOSE entertained us with slides and a running com m entary on their participation in the Pow der Puff Derby. BEA JOBE then presided over a short business m eeting held on the beach of beautiful Lake Okoboji.

JULIE AUERBACH spent the w eekend in Chicago. That w as the longest cross country up to date but vacation tim e is near and she plans to pick up her Dad in Chattanooga and fly to M ontgomery, Ala.
H ave you heard of the Cherokee 8? MARY PELTO and 49%e r BOB m ade a trip out W est with their six children, two boys, a g es 4 and 6, and four girls, ages 8, 11, 12, and 13. Problem One: finding an aircraft large enough to accom odate the whole crew. If necessary, they would have taken two planes. But, P iper’s Cherokee Six proved to be the answer.
A line boy in Amarillo, T exas, greet- td them with, “Is this a scheduled or r.on-scheduled a irline?’’ And a fellow in the Redmond, Ore., FSS, a F light Watch Station, shrieked, “That’s a C herokee???” , when he noted that there were 8 people on board. Otherwise, they created hardly a stir as they breezed through the West.
Highlights of the trip were: Grand Canyon, Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm , Busch Gardens in Van Nuys, Yosem ite National Yark, Crater Lake, and an unexpected bonus — a chance to handle the controls of a diesel engine in Great F alls, Montana. E ven if the kids forget all about their flying trip out West, we know they’ll never forget the day they drove the diesel engine.
W eather throughout the 5,000 m ile trio w as better than thy’d dared to hope for. Gone twenty three days, they left in haze and cam e back to M ichigan only to find it still hazy. Sure m ade them wonder if it had been that way the whole while they were gone.

Colorado Chapter is looking forward to a DRIVE-IN Chuck Wagon Dinner, 7:30 P.M ., August 19th, at the “F ly ing W” Ranch in Colorado Springs. This is a sw itch, but we just might have better attendance than at our last Colorado Springs fly-in. Only JO1 D E N NIS and her son arrived for this one.
A VFR-on-top flyan to Cheyenne, W yoming, for breakfast with ALICE HAMMOND, (who flew in from K earney, Nebraska) w as the highlight of our R ace Stop planning. The “best laid p lans,” of course, turned into a waiting gam e over the 4th of July weekend. The w ait w as w ell worth it with the roar of the first TAR flying by the Cheyenne Tower. Bed-check revealed 22 overnight TARs in Cheyenne. By Tuesday, 57 operations were
recorded and JO DENNIS. MARGE BLUE, PAT LUTHER, MARY FREN- ZEL, H ELEN CHOUN, CAROL TIL- FORD, MARTHA KENT, JEAN F E R RELL, RONNIE JOHNSON and GWEN CRAVEN had recorded m any pleasant m em ories o f a wonderful race and fabulous cooperation from all of Cheyenne, W yoming.

MARION TANKERSLEY really fe lt a very privileged character in being fortunate enough to spend 2 w eeks at the FAA A cadem y in Oklahoma City, attending the FAA-CAP Pilot Orientation Program . This program is aim ed at all around up-grading of “already” pilots, and utilized the Civil Air P atrol’s T-34s a s training p lanes in conjunction with F ederal Aviation A gency instructors, who proved to be not only excellent, but extrem ely patient, as well.

PAT JETTON, Airhaven, Redbird Airport, opened and closed their International Operations all in one nightm arish weekend. They rented an airplane to a student for a w eek’s vacation in N assau. All is w ell. The airplane starts hom e and is lost and presum ed down at sea. No word for two days. PAT alert’s her insurance co. and also checks with IRS about depreciating airplane in one year. Monday 'finds the airplane, and pilots, in Cuba—a ll fine but a little off course. PAT contacts everyone she can think of to get airplane back. Several days later, airplane lands in M iam i. PAT realerts insurance co. and IRS, takes two “ happy pills” and closes out Airhaven International. Don’t know what sh e’s done la tely for kicks.
Aero Sorority, D allas announces the D allas Doll Derby will be October 22nd and will be a rally like last year. NEW RULES: Airpane m ust have co- piot. The D allas Chapter is happy to announce that they have ordered the Am elia Earhart film to be used locally for schools, clubs, etc. This is a real great film and those of us who saw it in Seattle still have goose bumps.

PHYLLIS EM MERT and fam ily had one foot in the air on the way to San Francisco; CHARLOTTE BRANUM and husband JACK are just back from “Los W ages” and m anaged to get hom e with the airplane still belonging to them . They said it w as a business trip.

RUBY TATMAN flew her Bonanza to Seattle for a three w eek v isit with one of her sons. She took the fam ily on a cross-country trip of their State to Idaho — returning along the Canadian border. On her return, she flew down the P acific coast to Van Nuys— to v isit her sister.
BETTY R O G E R S accom panied RUBY on several trips to Phoenix to visit RUBY'S other son who has since been transferred to the Dom inican R epublic with his w ife and three sm all daughters. It wouldn’t surprise us if next winter w e hear that RUBY is island-hopping in her Bonanza!
LELA CARWARDINE of Las Cruces, N ew M exico, is not one to forget flying even when she is on the ground. E ach year she invites school children who a re studying transportation, on a field trip to the airport. There she explains a ll about the airplane using her Cessna 120 for the model, letting the Children take turns at sitting in the pilot’s seat and operating the controls. She h as been doing this One-Woman Project for the past three years and has four or five groups of children each year.

M ABEL EDITH and JIM OLIVER took in the E xperim ental Aircraft Assn. fly-in at Rockford. They w ere there for the entire event and MABEL EDITH worked in the EAA concession.
Houston 49y2ers BE N BOSWELL and MYRL BICKFORD and another friend flew to Rockford the last w eek end of the show and visited with the OLIVERS and took lots of pictures. MYRL has som e very good pictures and has been in great demand to show them at different aviation m eetings.
We have enjoyed entertaining MARY FRAN SEIDL, 99 from E l Paso, MARY FRAN is taking a 6-w eeks’ course at the University of Houston so has had an opportunity to attend our m eeting and other activities.

We had a nice turn-out and KAY BAKER drove clear in from Laredo for the “get-to-gether.” She liv es there now and she said driving up w as a good excuse to put som e m ileage on the new car that she and her husband now have. H er husband m ust go to A labam a for tem porary duty w hile going to school. H ave a good trip, KAY, and be sure and check in with the A labam a gals. They are a great gang. Our m eeting in L afayette on July 23 w as delightful; hostess JAN PHILLIPS. There w ere 9 m em bers present, 2 Sixty-Sixes, 2 prospective m em bers, and 7 guests, totaling 20 warm souls. A hearty w elcom e to VIRGINIA SMITH, transfer from the Houston Chapter who is now living in Lafay- ete.
Following a productive business m eeting, w e had a coffee-cookie break and then film s, courtesy of the FAA, on the F light Service Station and on D ensity Altitude. Both w ere highly inform ative, but the one entitled “Density A ltitude” w as very enjoyable. The dry title indicates a dry subject, but a s usual, you can’t judge a book by its cover. This is a 30 minute sound story and we highly recom m end it to anyone who is fortunate enough to be able to get it for showing at m eetings. MR. CHARLES LOVING of the FAA in L afayette w as kind enough to operate the projector (a lso provide by the FAA) and hand out cards to everyone for ordering a density altitude com puter from the FAA, free of charge. These film s that are availab le from the FAA are rea lly worthwhile to student and licensed pilot alike. We intend to take full advantage of this service and recom m end that other Chapters do likew ise. They are a compliment to any m eeting. At our next m eeting, in Baton Rouge, the Chief Controller a t Ryan Airport (MR. JOE CARROLL) has arranged to show us another film entitled “Wake Turbulence” which is equally a s interesting and inform ative a s w as “D ensity Altitude” . Keep in mind that these are story-type film s and not at all like a classroom lecture.
Your reporter, PAT WARD, had the pleasure of obtaining a single-engine seaplane rating in July. Sort of went along for the ride w hile another pilot w as getting his, and decided to try it m yself. N ever have I had so much real fun with an airplane. I enjoyed getting a m ulti-engine rating, but I just plain had fun with the floatplane. We have endless runway in our part of the country for seaplane work and it w as delightful. Am anxious to get m y hands on the newly certified Cessna 150 on straight floats. I couldn’t see how it would work, either, but Cessna has figured out all the goodies and they prom ise a real little jewel. Will be an excellent, inexpensive w ay for
pilots to obtain a sea rating. I got m ine in a Cessna 185 on amphib floats. Now there’s a hunk of airplane!
MARY JEAN FRESTRIDGE and her 49%ers are on their w ay to the w est coast v ia Bonanza with another couple from T exas. Their plans as they left sounded glorious. Hope they don’t get too spoiled on the unbelievable-to- us v isibility out west. If w e get over 15 m iles visibility down here it is unusual. Happy flying to the Prestridges.
DE E COMEAUX and her 49% er will be on a weekend trip to D allas and Shreveport on August 20-21 in a Ces- na Super Skylane. Their trip, like the Prestridges, w ill m ix business with pleasure. Will want to hear about both trips when they return.
One of our 66s, WEEZIE OGDEN, has had to adm it senority to her husband, GUY, who got h is P rivate license early in August. WEEZIE w as about 8 hours behind him in her tim e logged, and GUY h as her doing all the dirty work for him —checking the oil, clim bing around on the struts to check the fuel and doing the pre-flight. T hey’ve been taking lessons at the sam e tim e and I understand that WEEZIE did her fa ir share of back-seat-driving the first tim e they w ere airborne together without an instructor in the airplane.
Heard YVONNE RY DER on the radio not long ago com ing into Baton Rouge in her little Cessna 150. Now there’s a busy gal! M anager of three stores in three different towns.
Our August 27 m eeting is scheduled at DE E COMEAUX’s hom e — a sw im m ing party and barbeque. We w ill take nom ination for new officers and discuss plans to attend the South Central Section m eeting in Shreveport October 1-2.
Am sure that PATSY JONES and H ELEN HOOKS and FOY WEST, JEAN DE JARNETTE and ALICE CAGLE have been keeping the airways hot, but haven’t heard too much from them lately. GLORIA WARD has been doing som e ferrying, and is busy getting ready fo r her vacation to Florida and entering college a t Southeastern La. College in Hammond. Hope to see all of them at the August m eeting.

Our Chapter m et August 10, at the hom e of PAT GILDA. We are so glad to have her back with us. You see, she m oved to P rince George, B.C., in M arch but m oved back to Anchorage in June. (P eople do return!) She attended the Spring Sectional in E verett in April.
Speaking of the activ ities of our busy m em bers — MARION ZAEGEL spent M arch and April in Florida. Rented a 27-foot sailboat and sailed the Florida K eys for one week. Also spent three w eeks in Grand Canyon Island, which is south Of Cuba. She had fun skin d iving and cycling. She and her husband spent the sum m er building a new hom e on Campbell Lake where they keep their plane in their
front yard. She a lso has spent a good deal of tim e sailing at B ig Lake.
LAVELLE BETZ is another float enthusiast. She spent m any sum m er w eekends flying to new cabin on Shu- lin Lake and playing host to other pilots and their fam ilies, entertaining at num erous sw im m ing parties and sour dough breakfasts (alw ays served at 8:30 to 9:00 on Sunday mornings) for which she is quite fam ous. Her cabin is very unique a s it is one constructed by a trapper. It is com pletely constructed of logs — even window sills, door facings, doors and floor.
RUTH O’BUCK, a well-known instructor in the Anchorage area, spent part of the sum m er com m ercial fishing. She also found -time to be checked out in a Civil Air Patrol Beaver. She brought guest, KARIS RICKETTS, to the m eeting.
H ELEN STODDARD found that she w as too busy covering airplanes to do m uch flying but will m ake up for it at an early date.
KATHRYN WAYER m ade several trips to B ig Lake, her favorite lake for beauty and size — lots of room for landings and takeoffs!
RUSTY HINYUB has b e e n busy chauffeuring her daughter to the Riding Academ y. But her aviation activities have not been curtained nevertheless.
PAT M cG EE w as asked to put on a TV show for the W ater Safety Club. The subject w as “F loat F ly ing’’. A panel discussion w as held with offic ia ls of the FAA and Alaska State Fish and G am e in which they discussed what float pilots depend on for water safety and the new FAA regulations concerning sam e. Different types of life preservers w ere discussed and a m ovie on flying floats to the Katmai fishing areas w as shown.

A letter from LYGIE HAGAN tells of her sum m er in Colorado Springs, of her husband’s IF R flight to pick her up hfter the race banquet and their IF R trip to Pendleton to help with the planes, only to be “ trapped” there for tw o days.
At the July 16th m eeting in Spokane it w as announced that BARBARA had been asked to be on the International Resolutions and the Section Flight Activities com m ittees, and that LYGIE is still on the E xecutive Board. Our Secretary, H ELEN DEW EY, has moved to Seattle from Omak. BE V ERLY PAULSON, who w as m arried this sum m er, flew to the m eeting from her new hom e in Grandview. PAT ECTON, Chairman of Flight A ctivities for the Chapter urged each one to fill out their activ ity sheets and com pete for the award to be given at the F all Sectional in Spokane. LAULETTE HANSEN, ELSIE CHILDS and H ELEN DUNLOP plan to attend the Spokane m eeting. PEARL MAGILL gave a report on B ig Sky R ace No. 3 plans. She and BEV. had flown the race route contacting the operators and MPA hangers in each town where stops would be m ade.

Big Sky Flying: After flying to the Lincoln m eeting, Chairman ELSIE CHILDS and fam ily drove to Glacier Park where they left the com forts of the busy world behind and hiked to Sperry G lacier where they cam ped for several days. They returned just in tim e for ELSIE to get to G lasgow for the a ir race. MARY STEVENSON with husband JACK and fam ily returned from the Oregon coast vacation. They spent their tim e near Rockaway, surfing, digging c lam s and having a wonderful tim e. MARY can g ive instructions on how to pack the “most- e s t” into a 182 Cessna. A trip to P enticton, Alberta, Canada, w as m ade by DOTTIE and JIM PAYNE in their Bonanza. They heartily recom m end this beautiful spot to everyone.
Congratulations go to MARTHA GAUNCE and daughter JANE who placed No. 8 in the International Air R ace which started in Harlingen, T exas, extended into M onterey, M exico, back into U. S. and ended in W. P alm Beach, Florida, for a total of 1609 m iles. MARTHA credits their 8th place position to JANE who she says wouldn’t even hear to going on the wrong side of a tower if it didn’t show that w ay on the m ap.
JOAN ORLEY and husband JOE recently flew to Hayden Lake, Idaho. The sam e w eek JOAN took her four children to Glendive to m eet her North Dakota fam ily for a picnic. Husband JOE who w as unable to go along had mo w orries about her ability to take ca re o f herself after her B ig Sky R ace flight. The long aw aited date for their trip to A laska finally arrived for VIVI- ANNE and MILT. SCHRANK. They are m aking their trip in their 1947 Cruiser, loaded with baggage and a “m ascot for MILTON” purchased by VIVIANNE that defies description. They plan to stop at several places along the route to Fairbanks where they w ill v isit PEARL LASKA, who m any will rem em ber from last years B ig Sky R ace. She w as Copilot with VIV.
R ace Item s of Interest; The Glasgow radio station (Covered the takeoff of the airplanes with a colorful description which included a brief history of som e o f the pilots. The announcer w as especia lly interested in MARGARET TUXILL and her distinction of being the oldest grandm other with the m ost grandchildren. While describing her take off in her Swift he referred to her a s Grandma Tuxill from Rexford. Once in his excitem ent it cam e out, Grandma Rexford for Tuxill.
When the question w as asked who had flowin the greatest distance to get to G lasgow that day, MARY STEVENSON won easily . She and her fam ily had left Tillamook, Oregon, early that morning, stopped in M issoula to unload the fam ily and then flew on to G lasgow by late afternoon. Around 6 hours flying tim e in a 182. Two of the pilots flying the race had new private licenses, less than a month old. PEGGY K RUEG ER from Cut Bank and MADONNA SMITH from Lewistown.

She just com pleted her second flight to M ackie Bar, Idaho, with her P iper Cherokee 235 loaded to the hilt with supplies for “Bucksin B ill” . JO-NEAL has to negotiate a frightful 7,500’ gorge —just right—to land a B. B ill’s strip.

The girls were beautiful, stepping out of their planes fin their new 99 attire which FRAN CAMPBELL of Klamath F alls had designed and m ade so attractively. A big “Thank you” to you, FRAN, for all the to u rs of labor. We proudly w ear our colors.

There w ere several reports on flights during the sum m er months. At present, JE A N SHAW, her 49%er and son, BILLY, are on a trip to Ohio and then on to N ew York to v isit with their other son. ROGER. ROSE ELLISON and her 49%er flew to Campbell River, B.C.. This is on Vancouver Island. The w eather w as beautiful and ROSE reported a m ost enjoyable trip. Later ROSE and HOPE flew to M edford for a luncheon with Jean Shaw. Yours truly, her 49% er and two children flew to Wyoming and visited with the POWERS fam ily at Greybull. B ecause m y job m oved to Seattle and I m oved with it 1 transferred to W estern W ashington Chapter from Oregon Chapter just before the1 Powder Puff Derby Start and got in on a lot of the hard work and fun connected with the race. B ecause of her very busy schedule, PAT M cGEE asked GINNY ANDREWS if I could take over the N ew s reporting — so here I am .
W estern Washington Chapter is gradually recovering from the race start. Two years ago it seem ed alm ost an im possibility that we could accom plish such a feat, but with the splendid cooperation given our R ace Chairman, Helen Appel, and Co-Chairman Ilovene Potter, everything turned out very well. When the chips are down som ehow 99s seem to band together and put their shoulders to the wheel. When the race w as postponed, the citizenry of Seattle cam e to the fore with invitations for dinner, offers of rooms, boat rides, sight-seeing trips, etc., to help m ake our task a little le s s difficult. From the s c o r e s of com plim entary letters com ing in from all over the country things m ust have been all right, in spite of the horrible w eather we experienced. We certainly do appreciate these letters, girls. It m ore than m akes all the effort w e expended seem worthwhile.
The Goody B ags were real “Goodie s” . F ar West Chapter hand painted everyone of them and all the Chapters in the Section cam e up with splendid item s to go in them . Without this splendid cooperation from other Chapters our job would have been very difficult. M any of the girls from the other Chapters also helped us out in the hospitality room when relief help w as needed. In fact, no m atter what w as asked of them , they alw ays cam e up with an “O.K. — where do I start?” attitude for which w e were truly g ra te ful.
One of the “funnies” at the race start w as that canned ju ices w ere packed in the box lunches, but no can openers.
PAT M cG EE has ben doing som e
Charter work; she flew som e investors up to Torofino, Canada, and said she greatly enjoyed the rugged country up 'in that area. Of great interest to all of us in the suit PAT M cGEE had against the FAA to enable her to instruct while w earing contact lenses. After three years, FAA finally granted itheir approval and now PAT can teach for pay. During the tim e PAT w as battling with FAA she taught over 400 hours (without pay) and instructed 39 students.
After two yea rs of not flying, I am being checked out in a Cessna 150 by PAT M cGEE so that I can do a little flitting over the countryside and learn m ore about m y new hom e State. F ly ing a 150 after being used to a 175 is like transferring from a Cadillac to a Volkswagon — but PAT says she thinks I ’ll be able to do it. JUDITH IMMELE, CAP, and BETH OLIVER, B ellevue, cam e in 28th in the Powder Puff Derby. Shortly after her return hom e BETH OLIVER and her 49% er, BARRY, adopted a new little daughter: Born July 28, 1966 — 5 lb., 10 oz., 18%” long—nam e, SHERYL ANN, who has com e to m ake her hom e with JOHN and SUZAN. You better know that BETH is a busy gal.
CAROL TALICH m oved to Seattle from Los Angeles earlier than she needed to in order to be able to help us out w ith the race start. She brought with her all the pieces of her home built airplane, and now that the race is over will concentrate on getting it together. JEAN STEWART is another of those daring individuals who is building her own plane. We wonder who will finish first.
Those of us who knew DORIS MULLEN w ere stunned by her death.
TERRY KELLOGG has recovered from m ajor surgery earlier this sum m er and is back taking part in activities. GINNY ANDREW S accom panied son TOBY on an instrum ent training flight to Spokane. It w as a real treat for her to watch him in the process of learning.

She flew to Arizona and returned with her three grandchildren and then to Seattle to be with her daughter who has been ill. rating the Start of the Powder Puff Derby from there in 1965. Its official dedication will be held during Gillespie F ie ld ’s first Annual Air-Cade, dates of which have been changed from October 1-2 to October 15th-16th. New 1967 m odels o f aircraft as w ell as antique m odels will be shown, and because autom obiles are a necessity to get to the airport, new and antique m odels w ill be shown, and because autom obiles are a necessity to get to the airport, new and antique m odels of cars will also be shown.
Our Chapter is assisting the Aviation Com m ittee of the E l Cajon Chamber of Com m erce in this show with JUDY BACHMAN heading the Public ity C om m ittee and LEAH LIERSCH heading the 2;C-per-pound flights to be held in connection with the Air-Cade. In this case, all of the proceeds of the 2c-per-pound flights will be divided am ong the operators who furnish airplanes for it in proportion to the num ber of hours flown by their airplanes. DOTTIE SANDERS will continue to be in charge of the Trophy and D isplay Case and its dedication.

N ew s is scarce this month. Guess our 99s are busy herding kiddies through the last few w eeks of sum m er vacation. I don’t know about the rest of you gals, but this sould finds it a bit of a bind to filter the kiddies out am ong the neighbors and head for the airport. Ah, for Septem ber 6th and the first day of school.
LOIS WILLIAMS is beginning to find m ore free tim e now that her oldest son, DAVID JR., 16, has soloed. His shirt ta il w as cut August 15th. What a proud day! LOIS and her 4914er, DAVE, bought a Cessna 182 and have had it in the air practically every day since. LOIS took her three youngest boys back E ast for a vacation on a com m ercial airliner. Then cam e the now fam ous strike. The b e s t they could do on the com m ercial airlines toward getting hom e to Reno w as Sioux F alls. Husband DAVE saved the day by m eeting them there with the 182 and flying them on home.
JUDY HISLE has been too busy with her business ventures to give her Cessna 210 the proper exercise. She’s looking forward to flying to Carson City with LOIS WILLIAMS for our next Chapter m eeting this Friday the 19th.
DOROTHY STAUFF reports her 4914er, CARROLL, has finally cured his case of 210-itis. How e lse? B y buying one, of course! “And it’s beautifu l,” says DOROTHY, who has m as
tered all of the new gadjets, including the DME. “ It flies a s easily as I he 182,” she m urm ers. They took it to M onterey where they spent a glorious day. M ethinks they have speeded them selves o u t of spending whole weekends away, un less they want to try for Miami!
JANE JANSSEN has had little time for flying a s she has been pitching in at the National Air R ace office in Reno. The m anager, DUANE COLE and fam ily, went back to the Rockford EAA fly-in and air show and JANE held down that busy air race office for a week. She and 49%er BILL flew their two little girls to Fresno to spend that w eek with relatives. The 170 m ade the trip again to bring the girls hom e in tim e to enjoy a good case of the mumps!
FRAN and GUS GUSTAVSON have been busy getting to rights in their new apartm ent in Fallon. While w e w ere stopping over there, we saw ANITA (Redwood E m pire Chapter) and JACK WOREL fly in to spend a night with GUS and FRAN before flying over to the Shurz Y to spend the weekend at BERTHA and CURTIS CLINE’s new resort. JACK (a lias B ig M am a) won the weekend for being the “best dressed participant” in the Fallon Fun R ace last June.

The thought occurs to m e that the next generation will be num erous enough to take over both engines o f our twin. (LYNN, is it dangerous to express such a thought?) It w as fun the other day to see LYNN and BOB take off for parts unknown, even to them , with their two-piece motor scooter tied in the back seat. A spontaneous trip in beautiful w eather.
The DORR fam ily are planning a trip to Britisih Columbia in their PBY, with som e lake-hopping in mind. RACHEL had a ride in the Ford Tri- Motor at Sanita M onica Airport, enjoying a Tin G oose’s eye v iew of the bikinis on the Marina beach and the traffic on the freeway, that nice clean sm ell of fuel, and that vibration that says you are “R eally F ly in g .” RACHE L got her instrum ent rating and alm ost im m ediately look off, v ia freew ay, for a cam ping trip, returning with a sunburn, a cold, and ten extra pounds.

Our July m eeting w as a breakfast at F lagstaff M unicipal Airport Cafe. Six 99s w ere in attendance. We had as guests, SHIRLEY MARSHALL and LEE, RUTH RAM AGE of Phoenix and LOIS WARD brought her granddaughter, VIRGINIA.
The m eeting w as devoted alm ost exclusively to discussion of our air lift. Those who have done th is know that there are a thousand details to be worked out. We decided to charge 2c-a-pound and c a l l it “Pennies-a- Pound” . The date of Septem ber 25th is fast approaching, and w e need the help and support of all in our Chapter.
I don’t know of too m any flying activ ities lately. M A R Y ELLEN and W ARREN flew back to Nebraska to get daughter LORI, who had been visiting her aunt for 7 weeks. Too long, sa y s MARY ELLEN. She flew the first leg to Tucum cari, then let WARREN fly. The a ir got very rough so they landed at Dodge City. MARY ELLEN recom m ends that place quite highly, line boys to greet you and a courtesy car. They landed at Grand Island because of showers. They were greeted by a lady in a red dress who rolled out a red carpet for MARY to w alk on. She said it m ade her feel like a Queen instead of a wilted lady pilot. From there, on to their final destination of W ayne, Neb. On the w ay back, they w ere held up in Omaha for 2 days because of weather. F inally m ade it home. Quite a wonderful experience all in all.
As I write this, BETH is in the hospital recovering from surgery. She is doing quite well, I understand, and m ay be allowed to com e hom e today. We all wish her a speedy and com plete recovery.
One Sunday last month, the four of us flew to P ipe Springs National Monument. We w ere to m eet another couple there for a picnic. They flew by way of P age and Rainbow Bridge. As we w ere on final, they w ere turning downwind, pretty good tim ing. For any
who are interested, this is a nice place to fly. An em ployee m et us at the airstrip (which is good), took us to the picnic grounds. These are lovely — trees, tab les and grills and wood to cook with. The Old Mormon Fort is within ea sy walking distance . . . we took the tour of this fort, very interesting.
I ’m sure there m ust be m ore to write about, but I ’v e been a little lax a b o u t contacting m em bers to catch up on what they have been doing. H ave enjoyed being 'our Chapter’s reporter this past year. I enjoy 99s so very much, anyway, and look forward to our monthly get to- gethers.

G reetings from one of your newest Chapters. We held our Charter installation dinner on August 13 and had a very nice turnout. Over 100 m em bers and guests w e r e there. ALICE ROBERTS, the International President, and PAT LAMBART, Southw est Governor, flew over from Phoenix to be our honored guests. We were sponsored by the San D iego Chapter who presented us with nam e buttons, and our gold 99 pin. The E l Cajon Chapter also attended and presented us with a guest book which all of our visitors signed. E ven though it w as the 13th of August and there were just 13 m em bers, the Ninety-Nines in the newly formed Palom ar Chapter felt very lucky to be receiving their Charter.
120 Ninety-Nines, 49% ers and guests sat down at tables decorated with tangerine-laden branches for the banquet held at M arty’s Restaurant in Oceanside. BETTY WHARTON, who as M em bership Chairman of the sponsoring Chapter, has done all the liaison work with the new chapter, did a trem endous job as m aster of cerem onies. F irst to be introduced w as ALICE ROBERTS, International President, who acquainted the guests with background on the Ninety-Nines and introduced in turn PAT LAMBART, Southwest Section Governor. PAT first presented the Charter to Chairman MARY PEARSON and then the 99 pins and letters of w elcom e to each m em ber of Palom ar Chapter.
DOTTIE SANDERS, on behalf of the E l Cajon V alley Chapter, presented the new Chapter with a beautiful guest book, the cover of which had been im printed with the 99 com pass rose em blem and “P alom ar Chapter” in gold.
E ach m em ber of the new Chapter received a perm anent nam e button, given by the San D iego Chapter, presented by Vice-Chairman RUTH E B EY, standing in for Chairman STELLA HARDIN who w as unable to attend because of recent surgery.
The absolute hit of the evening, however, w as TOM JOHNSON’S (FRAN'S 49%er from Las V egas) adm inistering the 49% er oath to a ll the new 49% ers — left hand raised, they promised to provide their w ives with safe, airworthy planes, baby-sitters, to a ttribute any dam age incurred when their w ives w ere flying to m aterial failure, etc. — after the 99s had tied
49% er aprons around their husbands. E ach of the 49% ers received a copy of the oath, com plete with appropriate cartoon.

Yesterday we had a Southwest Sectional — well, would you believe a Junior Southwest Sectional? We followed our brave leader LOLA RICCI, Fly-In Chairman, (sorry about that Chief) to a beach party Fly-In at Santa Barbara; and guess who all were there besides our own San Fernando V alley girls!
We w ere so pleased to see JEAN-
NINE CECCIO, form erly one of us and now San Jose, along with MARY SMITH from the Santa Clara V alley Chapter. And from even further north we (had HIALEAH REILICH and GLADYS COBB from the B ay Cities Chapter (not to mention GLADYS' pooch Cindy and a couple of young- ’uns). Not flying in, un less just around the patch, but there to greet us were representatives from Santa Barbara Chapter JOAN STEINBERGER, DOROTHY BATTERTON and MARGARET M EAD. We had a ball having lunch from the ham burger stand, visiting, getting tar all over our feet and chil- to the San Fernando V alley m em bers dren, and a few of the braver going in for a dunk. “W e” in this case refers which included NITA LOVELESS, LIBBY SVENSEN, LOLA RICCI, LORELI CANGIANO, MARY JOHNSON, ELLEN TRINDLE, LOIS MAUER, CATHY BLACK, LOIS MILES, EM SANDERS, JEANNE DAY, ANNETTE SEYDEL and friends and relatives and w e thank the Santa Barbara girls for so thoughtfully rolling out this fine stretch of beach even if they did m iss rem oving all the tar when they got it ready. It w as great fun!
That w asn’t all we did this month. We had a Chapter m eeting, too, where we found out that MARY K EM PER and LOIS MILES clim bed the slopes of the just nam ed “Mount A m elia E arhart” with m em bers of the Rocket- dyne Climbing Club. For this achievem ent they w ere aw arded honorary m em berships and “Y etti” Awards from the clim bers. Seeing a s they had to carry 20 lb. packs and w ear special boots, they practiced around the house beforehand to get used to their “h eavy” feet. We are very proud of our two pioneers.

As another Powder Puff Derby has becom e history, we are all proud as peacocks of our Chapter’s entrants and their showing in the race this year. VIRGINIA W EGENER and MARILYN NORTON team ed up to fly a Cessna Skylane and placed 22nd in a field of over 80 entries, with a score of 10. Very good indeed girls, w e ’re proud of you.
NORMA WILCOX recently spent 2 w eeks with her m other in Lakeview, Oregon. She brought the Airport Manager back with her and flew on to Tucson to pick up a plane. A de'.onr to Fox F ield in Lancaster have them an opportunity to watch the trials for the National Air R aces. They also spent som e tim e in D eer Valley, Arizona, to do som e soaring. Congratulations a re a lso in order (a little belatedly) to NORMA for receiving her instructor rating. She is flying for Ginny’s F lying Service (VIRGINIA W EGENER) at Brackett Field.
GINNY and RUSS GRAHAM have returned from an extensive (our of Europe and we hope to have som e details of their trip for a future issue BETTY and ARNOLD HUMBLE had a great trip to Yosem ite, Sequoia and San D iego in July, but, unfortunately, had to drive and drive — and drive! H owever, they plan a flying trip to Boise, Idaho, in Septem ber and will fly a Super Skym aster.
SHIRLEY and CARL GILMORE have just returned from a breath- takingly beautiful air tour of Southeast Alaska with the Sky-Larks — and all their survival equipment w as intact and untouched! Anyone for a freeze dried dinner? ISABEL OWEN recently hurdled the instrum ent written exam and is now plugging for the rating. She is really concentrating as the written is good for only two years! You'll m ake it, ISABEL!
JEAN SUGDEN reports a new Musketeer is in their “garage” and they hope to be flying to Jackson Hole soon. W e’re sure there are m any trips on the agenda.
Our new year will be ushered in at our annual Installation Dinner on Septem ber 8th at the Old Hickory Inn in Glendora. W e’re looking forward to a

Lunch will be served by hostess SHIRLEY GILMORE and BETTY HUMBLE. Later a short business m eeting and entertainm ent. SHIRLEY has spent much of this sum er at their cabin at Big B ear since their return for A laska and assu res us that the weather will be beautiful and sunny and a good day to relax am ong the pines. This will g ive everyone a chance to practice their high altitude landings and takeoffs. Should be lots of fun — and w e’ll have a report on the activities for a later issue.

ELAINE had just returned from a 5500 m ile round robin a ir trip touching down in, to nam e a few , T exas, Kansas. So. Dakota, Moritana and Idaho, giving a real test to their new Cessna. GEORGE ANN hast flown her two children to M issouri returning by following the Oregon Trail. She reported that the history of the trail is still ev idenced by the ruts of wagon wheels. EVELYN, busy working th is fall in her husband’s law office, has had flights to Van N uys and Fresno in her Cessna Skyhawk. We assum e LAURA BOHANAN is beating the sagebrush around Needles for enough wom en pilots to form a Chapter there. There should be som e real “hot” prospects in that area this tim e of year. Sorry about that.
The “monsoon season” is upon us here in Tucson and, although it only lasts a few w eeks, everyone either leaves town or hibernates in their air- conditioned cem ent block caves. KEN COOK took daughter SUSAN to Chicago for a couple of w eeks and left VIRGINIA hom e without an airplane.
SHIRLEY MARSHALL picked up H E L E N LAWRENCE’S daughter, KARYN, in F lagstaff and flew her and SH IRLEY’S daughter, LEE, to San Carlos, M exico, for a week. Later KARYN w as deposited back home and SHIRLEY m ade a quick trip to Albuquerque.
Our last m eeting at LORRAINE YOCUM’S brought us a new m em ber. JAN ENGELHART works at F reew ay Airport a s secretary, bookkeeper and general Girl Friday. You w ill also hear her calm , calm voice on 122.8. JAN began flying quite a few years ago w hile in school and had mort of the usual interruptions; college, m arriage, children and, finally, a license. Good to have you with us, JAN.
LORRAINE and LEE YOCUM have had to drive back and forth to their m ountain cabin recently a s all that furniture just wouldn’t fit in the Bonanza. LORRAINE says the strip at Springerville is lighted now a s w ell as paved; probably still have to call into town for gas, tho.
On Septem ber 8th the YOCUMS take off for Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for the annual m eeting of the Mountain Oyster Club. They are working very hard at putting tim e on that new engine so it w ill be w ell broken in for our Penny-A-Pound in October.
BETTY BELLE and CARL INGWER flew their daughter to Guadalajara last w eek for a tennis tournam ent and then took off by car to tour the interior of M exico. They are visiting m any of the p laces inaccessib le by air and barely so by road. There are a few places even the Grand Commander can’t take them .
This weekend is our “Tour” to the Grand Canyon — thunderstorm s permitting. VIRGINIA and LUM E D WARDS are getting the Cherokee ready for the trip with PAT and JIM
MORSE going as passengers. Or rather; LUM and JIM are the passengers, as the g irls insist both m en will ride in ithe rear seat. We w ill have an a c count of the trip next month. I shouldn ’t say it w ill be a blow-by-blow description, should I?

Now everyone is out of the hospital, neck-braces and slings and getting in drape for Penny-A-Pound. D eep knee bends, push-ups and hurdles are the order of the day for the next few weeks. We will probably have sore m uscles anyw ay.

Our July m eeting w as held at the hom e of MARGE MACKEY. A f t e r som e prelim inary business w as talked through MAXINE NIELSON gave a report of the AWTAR race and her difficu lties encountered in K ansas City. Her plane was dam aged by the wind to such an extent that she decided to abort: the race and return hom e after the plane w as repaired. ALBERTA NICHOLSON reported on the convention and the m eeting of m any form er friends.
Our August m eeting will be held this com ing Friday, August 19t:h, at Fillm ore Airport. We plan a Fly-in to Fillm ore in the early m orning hours so that the runway can be air marked before ift becom es too intensely hot.
Activities of various m em bers in our Chapter have taken them to m any places bdth within and outside of our mountain region: MAXINE NIELSON had a trip to Southern California and a side trip into M exico, itself. CARYL KNOWLTON flew to Lake Tahoe, Incline V illage and Laguna B each, California. VIRGINIA LAVIN reports no fly ing but says she is happy to report that her husband is entirely well and back to work. LOUISE ANDERSON flew to Kalispell and Ennis, Montana. Later this month LOUISE plans a flight to Lompoc to see her daughter. SUE ELLIS has been busy m oving to her new hom e at 2330 Dallin Street, Salt Lake City. This sum m er she has enjoyed with her fam ily their lovely sum m er hom e on B ear Lake. JANE ANDREASON has started to work at Continental Motors in Salt Lake and although she thinks it is tem porary the grapevine indicates it will be full tim e. SALLY WELLS is helping her husband at the Cedar City Airport
during their rush of business of Fire Patrol F lying for the Forest Service and charter work a s well. LILA FIEL- DEN enjoyed a wonderful trip to Alaska and the Northwest.
LOUISE MORRISON has staying at her hom e, for the nexit year, a lovely new daughter from N ew Zealand, GLENDA HEY, age 17. GLENDA is here for a year to attend our schools on a scholarship. LOUISE, along with her new responsibilities, is working hard to obtain sufficient hours to m eet the dem ands for both her com m ercial and instructor ratings.

The Annual M eeting of the Australian Section was held in Melbourne in the Autumn and was w ell attended. Last y ea r’s Office-bearers w ere re-elected for a second term , and several new m em bers were welcom ed.

Several of our wom en pilots are recovering from the shock of either passing or failing som e or all the recent Com m ercial L icense Theory E x am s. One paper had a pass rate of about 4%! ROSEMARY ARNOLD w as one of the lucky ones to pass this particular paper, it w as a beaut! ROSEMARY recently took the salute at the Australian Air League annual JEAN BATTEN WINGS PARADE and m ade a fine speech. Since her highly successful and very am using address to the Institute of Navigation at their annual Ladies Night, R osem ary is in great demand.

W e’re all trem endously disappointed that the N inety - N ines visit to England has had to be cancelled. We w ere looking forward to m eeting you all and showing you around, a n d SHEILA had organized a wonderful program . However, we, 11 be keeping our fingers crossed that m aybe i t ’ll com e off next year.
I am writing this on the day of the K ings Cup Air R ace — the final of the National Air R aces — and I shall have1 to dispatch m y report before hearing the final placings of 'the three entrants from our Section: SHEILA SCOTT, MARGO McKELLAR a n d CHRISTINE HUGHES. I can, however, report on the second round of the National Air R aces and the Ninety - N ines Trophy race, both of which took place on August 6th a't Middleton - St. George in the North - E ast of England. There w ere 30 entries in the. Nationals, which involved three laps of a 93-mile course. On the final lap, a lone aircraft cam e in'to view way out in front of the rest of the mob. G reat excitem ent am ong the watching Ninety-Nines when w e saw that it was SHEILA in her Round-the-World Com anche streaking toward the finish line. A spectacu lar victory and a thrilling m om ent for all of us — not the least SHEILA! CHRISTINE, flying a de H avilland Chipmunk accurately and efficiently, took 5th place; but unfortunately MARGO’S Tiger Moth was handicapped out of the top c la ss in spite of her usual im peccable flying.
There w ere 8 entrants for the N inet y - N in e ’s Trophy. SHEILA, CHRISTINE and MARGO w ere joined by ANNELIESE PINTO, M ember - at - L arge from Portugal; THEA ADAMS, DAPHNE POYNTER, DELFHINE GRAY-FISK and m yself with BETTY CONES a s co-pilot. PAMELA HUNT- LY had entered but had trouble with her Com anche in France and couldn ’t m ake it — w e all m issed her. DAWN TURLEY w as on hand but not racing — she w as there to cheer on 49%er ALAN in the Nationals. SHEILA wias severly re-handicapped after her su ccess in the previous race but, in spite of this, she again won con
vincingly in her Comanche. Second was Delphine Gray - F isk and third, C H R I S T I N E HUGHES. Very many congratulations to them from the rest of us, especially to SHEILA for Iher wonderful double win. ALAN FREAKES of Champion Sparking Plug presented 'the Champion Trophy to SHELIA and the cash prizes for 2nd and 3rd places, a s w ell a s the prize for best foreign entrant — which ANNELIESE won, needless to say! We w ere so pleased to see ANNELIESE iagain and glad that she spent her vaction visiting us and doing som e flying over here. She flew, and raced, one of 'the Tiger Club’s Turbulents (the tiny single-seater 45 H P plane) by courtesy of our good friend NORMAN JONES, Chairman of the fam ous Tiger Club. ANNELIESE had a long cold trip up to Middleton, but found her way successfully, in poor weather conditions, in spite of very unfam iliar territory — not a bit like Portugal, she tells us!
E xciting news from THEA ADAMS. Firstly, she has passed her Am erican Com m ercial written with an exce llent result. Very m any congratulatons, THEA, and good luck with the flying side of it. Secondly, she now has her own aircraft — a 3-place Auster, which her father bought her. THEA flew this in the Ninety-Nines Trophy — her first air race — and w e wish her m any happy hours of flying in it.
SHEILA will be heading Stateside shortly. She’s attending the AOPA Plantation Party in her “official capacity” as round-the-world record- breaker, so look out for her all you party-goers!

June m eeting was a fly-in to Sterling Airport (new paved strip) and lunch at G reenm eadow Lodge, 20 m em bers and guests arrived on that windy day. Was good to see LORRAINE MELICAN looking pert and fully recuperated and MARIE LE- PORE, who has set her ETA for fulltim e leisure in Septem ber. She plans to devote m ore tim e to things she enjoys doing — like painting. One of her paintings is being shown at the W orcester G allery.

For a vacation trip, ANNE PRINGLE and 49%er ANDREW (USAF pilot ) flew their Stinson Station Wagon to California and return.
