ADORATION CHAPEL “Every Holy Mass makes present in an unbloody manner the

unique and perfect sacrifice offered by Christ on the tree of the

cross in which Mary participated joined in spirit with her suffer-

ing Son lovingly consenting to His sacrifice and offering her own

sorrow to the Father (e.f. Luman Gentium, no. 58). Therefore,

when we celebrate the Eucharist, the memorial of Christ’s Pass-

over, the memory of His Mother’s suffering is also made alive

and present, this Mother, who, as an unsurpassable model, teaches

the faithful to unite themselves more intimately to the sacrifice of

her Son, the one Redeemer. Through spiritual communion with

the sorrowful Mother of God, believers share in a special way in

the paschal mystery and are opened to this extraordinary action of

the Holy Spirit that produces a supernatural joy because of com-

munion with the glorious Christ on the example of the joy granted

to Mary in the glory of heaven as the first person to share in the

fruits of redemption.”

PASTOR’S COLUMN Sarah Hewit Frier was the niece of Father Augustine Hewit,

C.S.P., associate founder, in 1858, of the famous American reli-

gious order, the Paulist Fathers. Through her Paulist connection,

she became acquainted, as a girl, with the great American con-

vert, journalist and philosopher, Orestes A. Brownson. But apart

from having famous friends and family, Sarah achieved a bit of

glory on her own as the author of a catchy little epigram.

A few years before her death in 1953 she wrote these wise

and witty lines which all of us would do well to remember and act

on:

Every day I pass the church,

I stop and make a visit,

For fear that when I’m carried there

The Lord will say, “Who is it?”

“…Remember your last days, set enmity aside; remember death

and decay and cease from sin!” (Sirach 28:6 - Today’s first read-

ing)

If your day is hemmed with prayer, it is less likely to unravel.

~Rev. Edward J Smith
