Monday Evenings ~ September 30 & October 14 6:00-9:00 p.m.

Do you know what spiritual gifts you have been given? Each of us has been given specific gifts for a purpose; they are intended to be used. But first we have to listen carefully and intentionally to discover those gifts and what the Lord looks for us to do to use them.

All YOU have to do is commit to two Monday nights September 30 & October 14

From 6:00 p.m.—9:00 p.m. both nights.

Together through study, discovery and prayer we will work together to learn more about these grace gifts. Nancy Montgomery will be the facilitator and she is hoping you will join her on this open-ended adventure.

Two nights...you don’t have to commit to any more than that! Please sign up at the kiosk or call the church office.

We spend so much time recharging phones and i-pads. How

about spending some time recharging your faith and your

hope for the future? You will be offered many choices in

programming that you may pick, choose or refuse. Some of

the choices are arts, a nature center tour, book discussion on

the book Help, Thanks, Wow, a golf outing, hand bells,

entertainment by Rob Snow, hikes, vespers and many, many

more. You participate in what you wish or take time to sit

and visit with someone, read a book, take a walk or take a

nap in one of the hammocks situated around the camp.

FALL PROGRAM IN FULL SWING! An Invitation from the Director of Music

Boys and girls in grades 3 through 7 – we need you in choir,

beginning the first Wednesday of the month: September 4th. Mom

and dad, grandparents: can you set aside time for nurturing the

musical and spiritual needs of our young ones? Wednesdays here

at Christ Church are full of life and energy: in the courtyard, in

Westminster Hall, in the choir room, and in the sanctuary. Boys

begin at 4:30 (snacks available 4:15) and finish at 6:15. Girls begin

at 5:30 and finish at 7:15. There are a lot of varying combined

activities during the time that boys and girls are together (5:30 to

6:15).

Adults and youth – our Chancel Choir begins rehearsals on the

first Thursday of the month, September 5th, and will lead in worship

the following Sunday, the 8th. Thursday rehearsals begin at 7:15

pm, Sunday rehearsals begin at 9:40 am. Just like most church

choirs: we need more tenors and basses! Come on, guys, let’s show

them how “tough and tender” we can be!

Page 2

Acolyte Training

Sunday, September 29 following 10:30 service

This class teaches the importance of acolytes in service, their history, as well as

the fundamentals.

Open to children in 3rd grade and older

Current acolytes as well as children interested in becoming acolytes should plan

on attending. Lunch will be provided and parents of younger children should plan on attending as well. Please

sign up for this class by September 22 at the information kiosk or by calling the church office so that we have

enough materials prepared.

We Need 535 More Hymnals Deadline for Ordering: September 30

We are only at 35% of our goal to fill the sanctuary,

balcony, chapel, and choir room, with the new

Presbyterian hymnal. We hope to have a few extra in

Westminster Hall, parlor, and classrooms. All of the new

songs that we have been singing in worship are included

in Glory to God. Many folks have even commented with

delight that several “old favorites” left out of our current

book have been restored in the new hymnal.

Your gifts to the hymnal fund can be dedicated in memory

of, in thanksgiving for, in honor of: loved ones, mentors,

teachers, and any of the Saints in Light of your life. Please

help Christ Church move forward in the inspiring new

energy of congregational singing which so many people

are appreciating. With copyright permissions, we have

been printing several new songs on the pages of the Sunday Order

of Worship, but having the new hymnals in the pews will be so

much more convenient for our in-house printing logistics.

Feeding Body and Spirit As a church, we seek to feed the spirit. For

many the path to feeding the body is not so

simple. Our Food, Clothing, and Prayer Ministry

serves approximately 275 needy families each

month (a 35% increase from last year’s 200

families).

With God’s blessing, we have always

managed to find the money needed to support

this program, through the Church’s General Fund,

donations from the sale of candy and flowers,

and memorial gifts. However, the financial

burden of 75 more families each month

represents a revenue shortfall of $1,500.00 each

month or $18,000.00 a year that must be

addressed. While that number seems staggering

in total, it is merely $20.00 a month for each

family we help. Twenty dollars, less than the cost

of two movie tickets to provide a family with a

bag of fresh groceries and toiletries at each of

our two distributions.

This is the first time we have ever held a

fund-raising campaign to support the Food,

Clothing, and Prayer Ministry. We hope that you

will consider it a worthy cause.

Scarf of Hope —The goal is to give

each lady (approx. 200) who passes through

the Domestic Violence Shelter a Scarf of

Hope. They can be knitted or crocheted out

of worsted weight yarn, about 6 inches

wide and 62 inches long; any pattern you

choose. From now until November they

should be snuggly warm. After November,

lighter weight yarn will be used for spring

and summer. Please sign up at the kiosk or

call Bette Maier (330-493-7247). Suggested

patterns are available at the kiosk. When

you turn in your finished scarf, please

enclose a note of encouragement signed

with your first name only. Thank you for

taking on this project. The staff of DVPI is

aware of this project.

Hats and Mittens—for our own food,

clothing and prayer ministry as well as the

Lakota children will be needed for the tree.

Last year the tree was cleared 3 times, can

we make it 4 this year? They can be

purchased as well as knitted. Please be

generous. Thank you!

FIRST NOTE

Well, August sure was different around CPC...as promised!

I have heard many positive and a few not-so-positive reflections from you all.

There was universal praise for Lem Barney! He started us out; the rest of the

month continued to be lively, challenging, renewing, thought-provoking and,

above all, faithful. Much of it was due to the creativity, energy and drive of

David Kienzle. Jon Mathewson wrote scripts and played guitar, Jennie

worked with the kids and in the kitchen. Frankly, a whole host of folk

dedicated their time and talent to “something different!” I am thankful for

all!

September will find the congregation as busy as ever. Classes start up,

fellowships follow their regularly scheduled program, and the choirs return. I

am asking you to mark your calendar for Sunday, September 15th. You may

want to plan on coming to church a bit early or to stay a bit longer that day.

Throughout Westminster Hall you will find tables, banners, posters, tri-folds,

people...and candy. Sunday, September 15th is “Gifts to God....Our

Congregation In Action Sunday.” (Long title!)

Throughout the Hall tables, banners and people will welcome you to

take a look at all the various groups, missions, classes and opportunities to

serve available to you at CPC. Learn about our Small Groups Ministry.

Consider ushering. Come to understand the extent of, and opportunities you

have to become involved in CPC mission outreach. There are so many ways

you can be active in the life and ministry of your church. Come see “when,

where, why and how!”

The simple fact of the matter is this; you have gifts to discover, develop,

and share. You were designed by God to learn and to serve. Paul, in the

14th chapter of his first letter to the Corinthians, encourages us to be eager

for spiritual gifts and then to use them for building up the church. Today we

might put it this way: Find the gifts God has given you, then use the gifts God

has given you. Use them to serve the church inside and out. Use them to

make your congregation stronger, and use them to reach out into the world.

Three questions come to my mind as I write this. The first: If not here,

where? The second; If not now, when? The third; If not you, who?

A SECOND NOTE

Planning an event, class, meeting or gathering at CPC? Please let the

church office know of your plans so that the church calendar can be up-

dated and accurate. Bible study teachers, ministry chairs, special event

leaders please call Caryn as soon as you set up a meeting/event time and

date. She will check the church calendar for you to make sure the building is

open and that room is available. Also, remember that evening meetings

need to be scheduled when custodial help is available. With enough

advanced notice we can arrange for custodial coverage.

THIRD NOTE

Many of you are asking how Pastor Wendy is doing. HEPA laws are

designed to protect a person’s privacy and medical information. But when

you care for someone, they often feel like a blockade or wall preventing

care-giving and understanding. Please know that the Session and the

Personnel Ministry are doing everything possible to assist Wendy and

advance the ministry of CPC. As information becomes available, I will make

every effort to pass it along promptly.

The peace of Christ be with you,

Dear Members and Friends of Christ Church—Pastor Dave and Wendy,

Rev. Trubee,

I cannot begin to express my gratitude for all the prayers and support through the many

surgical procedures and hospital stays. The cards of caring, support and love have been endless and awesome! I am blessed to have

such a caring and loving Church family!

With lots of love! Debbie Douglass Roth
