Building Global Leaders in
Community Service
Service......Leadership......It's What Lions Do
In preparation for celebration of our Lions Clubs International 100th Anniversary, this year’s Forum will have an additional focus on leadership training to better equip Lions in accomplishing our Centennial Service Challenge of 100 million acts of service. This will include class room hands-on training. In addition to our normal outstanding selection of 60 leadership seminars, we have added seminars dedicated to service projects. These are designed to assist Lions at the Club and District level in better planning projects to serve their communities. Saturday afternoon will have three large service projects. These will represent our four service campaigns of Engaging our Youth, Sharing the Vision, Relieving the Hunger and Protecting the Environment. Each attendee will be able to participate in each of the projects.

It's been a month already since our exciting Mid-Winter Convention -- and I am thrilled
that Spring is almost here! While winter has its charms -- nothing beats the warmer weather
and bright sunny days of Spring. It is a time of renewal and new hope - and a time of
change.
My time as your District Governor is winding down -- and your District Governor-Elect
Larry Muenchow is already gearing up for what is going to be a great term here in 5M3.
DGE Larry has a lot of great ideas and a passion for Lions that bodes well for our district
next year. He is already putting together his Cabinet and is making plans for his year as
your leader.
One of my hopes this past year was to encourage all the Lions of 5M3 to think about
leadership. As I have stated many times, I know every Lion has the capacity to be a leader.
Often it is as simple as stepping up to lead a club project or to run for a club office. Not
everyone has the time or energy to take on more complex leadership roles, such as District
Governor. But being a leader at the club level is just as important -- our communities here
in Southwestern Minnesota thrive when our clubs thrive!
I have also encouraged Lions to take on challenges. Many clubs fear change. Yet when
Lions take on new challenges -- the results can be awesome! My home club, Redwood
Falls, took on a challenge in February. For the first time, the club hosted a unique event to
raise money for a young blind girl in the community. With the help of a core of excited new
members, the club was able to raise approximately $8500 in one night! It was an
unbelievable turnout with results unexpected by anyone!
Taking on challenges and stepping forward to be leaders -- that is what Lions need
to do. Our clubs and our communities depend on us to think outside of ourselves to bring
success!
I have a challenge for all of you this month -- step outside and enjoy the warmth of the
sun. Take a few minutes to reflect on the successes of the past winter and pledge yourselves
to make this Spring an awesome one for you and your clubs! ROAR!
~ZONE MEETINGS~ Does your club have representation at
your Zone Meetings?
WHY NOT?!
Zone meetings are designed so information
gets out from the District Cabinet to the
clubs along with sharing between the clubs
on project ideas. By not attending these
meetings, the Zone Chair is then required to
attend YOUR club meeting to get this
information out. This costs your Zone Chair
and YOUR District extra money. Please
send your president and secretary as a
minimum to these meetings. Let’s make the
zone chair job easier by attending these
meetings.
Let’s get on board and get to those
Zone Meetings. Contact your Zone Chair
tell them you will be at the next meeting.
Wow! April is right around the corner. Time really does seem to fly faster all the
time. Speaking of time, I hope all clubs have taken the time to find new officers
for next year so you can vote them in next month and report them to LCI on your
PU 101 form. We need new officers for the new ideas they have, and to make
sure there are experienced leaders that are always available in our clubs. If you haven’t started
yet, get a committee going to ask members what position they would be willing to do for the
coming year. In my club, the outgoing President and the two outgoing directors are the automatic
committee to find new officers. If your members know that the position is just for a year, I think
you will find Lions that will step forward to serve, but be sure to ask them one on one!
Why do we need to have our officers elected as soon as possible? We are setting up our new
officer training seminars for the first week in June so that they will be ready to assume their office
in July. This year we are going to have two officer training meetings so that more Lions have a
opportunity to attend training. The first officer training will be held at the Marshall School on
Wednesday June 1st either at 6:30 pm. The second officer training will be Sunday June 5th in
Windom at the BARC building ( the old high school ) at 2 pm. If you have a preference on the
time, please let me know! I think I can guarantee that even “old officers “ will be able to learn
something new! We will have meetings for President, Secretary, Treasurer, Tail Twister, and of
course the Membership Committee. If you have any Lion that would like to sit in on any of these
meetings, they are always welcome! We will make every effort to be no longer than an
hour and a half so be on time! Secretaries, please bring your laptop, if you have one. Be
prepared to bring a carload to one of the meetings or even both of them! The more knowledge we
have, the more confidence we have that we can do the job!

NOTICE 5M3– A Lions Club borrowed these 2 district Welcome Drapes and never returned them. Our conventions
for the last 2 years has been short because of this. PLEASE check with your members to see if someone is storing
them for we would like them back. They should both be purple & gold. As you can see, the new colors are blue &
gold. We would really like to have the purple ones back. Call Lion Sue Muenchow at 507-629-3291.

Lion president Alan Lang and Dennis Mangen, community volunteer.
Thanks to the support of
Lions Clubs across 5M, Can
Do Canines continues to train
special trained dogs for
people with disabilities and
provide them free of charge to
those in need.
One recipient of a Can Do Canines assistance dog is
Natalie Regenscheid. Natalie now has a greater sense of
freedom, independence and peace of mind thanks to
Hearing Assist Dog Nadia. Read their story below.
NATALIE REGENCHEID & HEARING ASSIST DOG
NADIA
Natalie Regenscheid of St. Peter, Minn. was born with
severe hearing loss, but was confident she knew how to take
care of herself. It wasn’t until she lived on her own that she
began to realize she might need help.
At night, without her hearing aids, she wouldn’t know if
there was an emergency. Her audiologist suggested Can Do
Canines, but Natalie worried an assistance dog might make
others stare and she wouldn’t be able to live a normal life.
After being partnered with a two-year old black Lab named
Nadia, however, her worries vanished.
“Now that I have an assistance dog, I’ve realized it’s OK
to have a disability. This is my reality,” she says. “And I get
to bring my dog to work!”
Nadia accompanies Natalie everywhere, including her
jobs as a personal trainer and fitness instructor. She alerts
Natalie to sounds by nudging her and leading her to the
source. If someone is at the door, Nadia alerts
enthusiastically if she knows the person, more tentatively if
she doesn’t. Natalie feels confident to move into her own
place now that Nadia is with her. Since Nadia came into her
life, she is happier and has a more positive outlook. She also
feels safer at night.
Natalie is amazed at the generosity of Can Do Canines’
donors and supporters like the Lions Clubs. “These dogs are
expensive to train,” she says. “I was shocked that Can Do
Canines could give Nadia to me for free.”
Natalie is paying it forward by encouraging friends and
family to support Can Do Canines so others can benefit as
she has.

The Redwood Falls Lions Club held a Pre-Paddy Party
Fundraiser on February 27 to support many community
projects including a fund for Sofia Panitzke, 10, who has
been blind since birth. Family, friends and community
members came out in force to enjoy Irish music, raffles and
raise funds. Lions would like to thank everyone who
attended and contributed to our fundraising efforts,
including fellow Lions from Morgan, Wabasso, Vesta and
Marshall! The club will present a check for $5,000 to the
Panitzke family at their meeting in March.

Lions Clubs International- One of the best ways to keep members satisfied is to engage them in service. This April is Protect our Environment month, so consider planning an environmental project for Earth Day on April 22, or plan projects throughout the month to help the environment in your community.
From planting trees to organizing a park cleanup, there are countless ways to get involved. Start planning your project today by downloading the Protecting our Environment Planning Guide and 25 Environment Project Ideas and sharing them at your next club meeting. And consider inviting friends and neighbors to serve with you!

Welcome to my April newsletter article. If you
were not at the midwinter convention we had a great
time. Angie Dick and her Diabetes dog Buba
were the guest speaker for Can-Do-Canines. She has
been fighting with diabetes for 20 years and she
went into detail on how Buba has helped her with
detecting when her sugar is low.She was a great
example as to what Can-Do-Canines is all about. I
am sure all who heard her speak were impressed
with her.
Now that the convention is over I want to express
our gratefulness for the donations to the parade of
green that your clubs donated this year.
Just a reminder if your club has donated a total of
$500 or more in the last 5 years PLEASE LET ME
KNOW as you are eligible for a Top Dog award.
Here is an article from the Howler as to where the
funding is coming from so that Can-Do-Canines can
keep furnishing our assistance dogs free of charge.
Carlson School of Management MBA program
raises nearly $40,000 for Can Do Canines.
Can Do Canines extends our heartfelt thanks to the
Carlson 4 Community program. On Feb. 27 The
Carlson School of Management's MBA Charity
Auction raised nearly $40,000 and sold out in ticket
sales - a record year for the event!
Thanks to Marcelo Fernandez, an MBA student
that nominated us to their group as this year's
beneficiary. Marcelo volunteered last summer as
part of Honeywell's Rebuilding Together project and
helped clear and create the beautiful walking path
through the woods next to our building. He was
impressed by what he learned that day about our
services and nominated us to his team.
We are very grateful for the more than 1,000 hours
of volunteer time who Marcelo and his team put in
over the year to plan this successful event.
Once again THANK YOU for your support.
As always please give me a call if you are in need of
a program and I will be glad to come to your club
for a presentation.

The Centennial Service Challenge continues to challenge all Lions Clubs to create Community Projects that
serve Youth, Vision, Hunger and Environment. As your Club fulfills the goals of a project, please remind your
Secretary to send in their MyLCI Service Activity Report for each month. LCI records these activities and
determines if the projects meet any of the four Challenge areas of Service.
The Centennial Service Challenge continues through 2018 with the MD5M Big Celebration Event scheduled for
June 3, 2017 at the Mall of America in Bloomington. Keep this date in mind so we can be well represented.
Have a great Spring!

The Luverne Lions Club had
the pleasure to have Marg
Kuiper, the Sanford Sioux
Falls registered dietitian,
on-board the tour bus that took
diabetic South West Minnesota
folks from Luverne,
Worthington and other towns to “The Diabetes Expo”
in 2013 or 2014 (sorry I’m not sure). Along with Marg
were Luverne doctor and nursing staff who wanted to
attend as well to glean what The Expo had to provide.
We (Luverne Lions Club) put Marg in for The Dream
Catcher Award for all that she has provided both our
Club and our local community as well.
Lion Bill Martin, a December 2015 recipient of a new
pig heart-tissue mitral valve, attended a diet class Marg
holds routinely Monday in Luverne on Healthy Heart
diet training for new heart patients. The Luverne Club
has encountered numerous scheduling issues to present
her with the plaque and certificate since we received it
in 2014. Lion Bill, being one of her new students,
decided to have her provide the Luverne Lions Club
with new information on eating well. As it turned out,
she appeared, demonstration portion plastic plates in
hand, that ironically became a plate fresh baked cookies
(not a normal part of her presentation). Lion Bill joined
her at the front of the conference room, plaque and
award in-hand and, well you see the rest. Thank you
again Marg for all you do to “Serve” your Community.

In addition to fun and the business of our Multiple District and Foundations, several informative
seminars and speakers are planned. On Saturday following the noon luncheon, convention attendees
will have the opportunity to hear four informative speakers. First will be Dr. Michael Garwood, a
professor in the Department of Radiology and Associate Director of the Center for Magnetic
Resonance Research at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Garwood will update us on the research
being done for Diabetes.
Following Dr. Garwood will be Dr. Sandra Montezuma, ophthalmologist at the University of MN
who will update attendees on the new “bionic eye” surgery. Joining her will be 5M-2 Lion, Tim
Lindbo, a bionic eye recipient.
Third on the agenda is Kathleen Breen, Director of Lions Engagement at Leader Dogs for the Blind,
Rochester, Michigan. Lion Kathleen will enlighten us about Leader Dogs for the Blind and the Lions

Final speaker on Saturday afternoon will be Lion Hanna Elshoff from the Chatfield Lions Club in
District 5M-1. Lion Hanna and her solar powered bike, “ELF”, have been touring the eastern United

President Jimmy Carter’s signature. Hanna will share how her dream was fulfilled when she met and
had lunch with former President Carter and Rosalyn.
Our International guest for the weekend and speaker at our Saturday night banquet will be
Immediate Past International President, Joe Preston and his wife, Lion Joni.
On Sunday morning we will be challenged to look at our own personal dreams as we listen to Jerrid
Sebesta, former meteorologist at KARE 11 in Minneapolis. His challenge to us will be to pursue our
own personal dream with a passion.
District 5M-2 hopes to see you at the Bend in the River II in April! 10
This Amendment will be voted on at the MD5M Multiple Convention
being held in Mankato April 22-24. Please review and have your delegates
ready to vote on this Amendment.
11
Rationale: The costs of administering Multiple District 5M have increased substantially, in part
due to inflation, and the MD5M dues have not been increased for ten years. Our Membership has
decreased from 24,303 in 2005 to 21,429 in 2015. The loss of 2,947 members has substantially
decreased our dues income, $16,355.85 at $5.55 each.

MD5M Convention Hotel Information Hotel Reservations can be made by calling or booking online to your hotel of choice.
Rates will be guaranteed until March 21st, 2016 or until blocks fill up.
Although the Lions Year runs from July 1-June 30, your new Officer listing
HAS TO BE In to LCI (Lions Clubs International) before May 1! WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO? Hold
your elections, have your Secretary enter the clubs PU-101s into LCI, have your new officers
attend Officer Training (TBD) and wait until July 1.
What happens if this is not done? Your new officers will not be listed in the new directory so
all information from Lions will go to your old officers.
PS– Be sure to list email addresses for all officers for me! Thanks, Lion Cheri

Funds for the Eye Surgery Center at the
University of Minnesota
Lions of 5M3 are very supportive of efforts to raise
money for the new Eye Surgery Center. Your Vision
Board has pledged to raise $4,000,000 for this venture. In
selling raffle tickets for this Eye Surgery Center it is well
accepted and supported by all of you, including non-Lions
in our district. The need is great as our population ages and
demand increases. We write with heartfelt THANKS to all
of you who have purchased tickets and/or have donated to
this very worthy endeavor.
Growing Cornea Stem Cells
Last month I wrote about the research done by Dr. Hou at
the Lions Eye Bank. In his report to the Vision Foundation
he told about growing Stem Cells in the lab for implants in
the eye to grow healthy skin over the cornea. Lion Jennifer
of the Eye Bank sent us a fuller report about his research.
What follows is an abbreviated version of her article.
Stem cells grow on the surface of the eye in the area
where the iris (color) meets the sclera (white) of the eye,
and they are continually being replaced. Healthy stem cells
are critical to a healthy cornea. Patients with severely
damaged corneas (e.g., from chemical burns) lose the
ability to grow these stem cells. A corneal transplant
typically will not help, since the transplant needs a healthy
eye surface for success. Thirty years ago, such people were
not candidates for surgery and faced a life of blindness.
Today, some of these patients can be helped by a corneal
stem cell transplant. During surgery, the stem cells from
donor corneas are targeted and transplanted into the
recipient’s eye. After the transplant, the donor stem cells
continue to grow from the edge of the recipient’s cornea
across the entire corneal surface, leading to a permanently-
stabilized eye surface that will sustain a corneal transplant.
Dr. Hou is experimenting with growing stem cells in the
lab from donor tissue. The cells need chemicals to grow,
and the challenge is to find chemicals that are both
effective and as safe for the recipient as possible. Fetal
bovine serum, while effective, is not desirable, and Dr. Hou
is seeking a growth medium that is animal-product free. He
is looking at using donor blood serum as a growth medium.
Ultimately, he would like to make it possible for eye banks
to be the entities that grow these corneal stem cells for
transplant. 15
