SEPTEMBER 13 - 17 2021 PARENT E-BULLETIN Dear Parents, Whilst removal of restrictions are now in place, COVID 19 sadly remains with us. It is important to follow the remaining guidelines to protect those most vulnerable and to minimise disruption to face to face learning in the term ahead. To support high levels of attendance, we retain the control measures recommended by the Department for Education to reduce the risk of transmission in school: enhanced levels of cleaning, increased ventilation, promoting hand and respiratory hygiene, testing (where appropriate and advised) and the management of positive cases. The guidelines for self isolation have now changed and only students who have tested positive will be required to isolate. It is important that your child continues to use the lateral flow home testing kits twice a week. If your child develops any COVID symptoms they should get a PCR test as soon as possible. Continuing with safety matters, we had our first Fire Drill of the year on Thursday 16th September. I am very pleased to report that student conduct was excellent and it is heartening to know that, should we need to do this in an emergency situation, we can rely on them. As I looked at the whole school on Thursday, I was most impressed with how the students presented themselves. Uniform was of the high standard we are looking for; shoes rather than trainers, a single natural hair colour, no jewellery apart from a single stud in the ear and so on. These high standards means we can all get straight on with the main business of the school without unnecessary delay. With Year 11, we had our first Parents' Evening of the year on Thursday 16th September. For me, it is always a delight to hear of the plans our students have to go out and 'do good' in the world. This year, students are planning roles as diverse as architect, tree surgeon, mechanical engineering and the best job in the world.... teaching! We look forward to supporting them through Year 11 with their applications for next year. We are welcoming Year 7 parents to a settling in evening with us on 23rd September. Staff believe they have made a great start, so there will be lots of good news to share. Contact us if you have not had the details for the evening. Looking further ahead, we have our Open Evening for current Year 6 students on Thursday 30th September. After that date, we will be offering tours of the school during the school day or in the evening for those that work office hours. Please join us if you have younger children or point family and friends to those events - all welcome! Take care, Mr Lythgoe

Book reviewsSince the start of term, the English department has received over 60 book reviews fromstudents. Mr Kinnane's 7M are leading the way!

A selection of these reviews are on the following pages.

I have read the trilogy His Dark Material by Philip Pullman. They are brilliant books.

The main character through the first and last, is Lyra and in the second novel Will isintroduced. Together the try and save Lyra's late friend and Will's death- stricken farther. In thefirst book Lyra goes on a huge adventure and discovers other worlds and is transported to onein which she finds Will. In the second novel Lyra and Will go looking for Will's father who thewitch clan queen said had ventured into the world. In the third book the two of them explorethe land of the dead using the subtle knife that the acquired in the other world.

In my opinion the best bit was when Lyra travelled to the land of the dead and tried to findRodger. I would rate this series 4.5 because of its brilliant language and description. I wouldrecommend these books to anyone that likes engrossing reads.

Willow, Year 7

The series of books I am here to discuss with you is called 'Bear Grylls Adventures' whichconsists of 9 books . These books are about a variety of different children, who go on manymysterious adventures with a famous explorer; Bear Grylls. In each book there are manylessons Bear Grylls teaches them ! The adventures vary from:The blizzard challenge - A boy who is disliking camp a lot .The mountain challenge - A girl who struggles to speak up for herself. The cave challenge - A boy who loves to look great. The sea challenge - A girl who is a litter bug.The river challenge - A boy who hates getting wet.The dessert challenge - A girl who hates all bugs and spiders. The jungle challenge - A boy who wants to win everything. The volcano challenge - A boy who is addicted to video games. The earthquake challenge - A girl who hates the dark. But can Bear Grylls persuade these unwilling youngsters to take on adventures, challengetheir limits and learn to respect the earth around them.Yes, this is a series , but they are in no particular order; so, you can read them any way you like. These books are short, and they are probably suitable for the ages eight to ten but I still themreally interesting and no two books were the same. My rating for these books is a strong threestars.P.S. Fun FactBear Grylls actually wrote these books as well as a few other series - one aimed at youngerteens the other aimed at older teens and above.

All children who have consented will receive two on-site lateral flow device tests, 3 to 5 daysapart, on their return in the autumn term. These children should then continue to test twiceweekly at home, until the end of September, when this will be reviewed. By ensuring yourchild correctly carries out the lateral flow tests, it will be easier to spot asymptomatic spread inthe school. A positive lateral flow test should always be followed up with a PCR test and theperson testing should isolate until the results are back.

Covid update

The importance of testing and reporting in schools and colleges

Testing continues to play a crucial role, in and out of classrooms, in our fight against COVID19. Staff should continue to test themselves and report results whilst encouraging secondaryschool students to do likewise. Reporting test results can be done simply and quickly, frommobiles, online or by phone, and should be completed straightaway. Reporting not onlysupports contact tracing in the event of a positive case but also assists our understanding ofcommunity rates of infection.

The DfE has produced a blog which includes details on financial support available to parentswhose children are asked to self isolate after contact with a positive case. https://dfemedia.blog.gov.uk/2021/04/23/

Register your Covid-19 tests here - https://test-for-coronavirus.service.gov.uk/register-kitThis link can also be found on the top right of the homepage on our website.
