September 12 & September 19, 2016 A Double Issue J Peter Boardman and Kimberly Wright Mastrofina were our guests at the September 12 th meeting. Peter’s official title is Jobs Developer. He shared how excited he was to be matching the people who frequent the center with jobs in the community. In 2013 he stepped into this role with a positive attitude and a can do approach. He has been successful because he understands the importance of choice, and takes educated risks in the vocational process with those that he works with. He takes pride in his efforts and shares joy in their successes. In addition to his other responsibilities, he leads a vocational class twice a week to prepare the individuals for employment. He cited several examples of ways that Olean Center clients have gone to work and given back to the community The Rotary Four Way Test Is it the Truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? The Tattler The Rotary Club of Westerly Meetings held on Monday nights 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. At the Venice Restaurant 165 Shore Road Westerly, RI Peter noted that they are looking for more opportunities to put his clients to work and asked us to keep our ears open. If we hear of a company looking for help, we should call him and he will follow up on it. Kim serves as the Community Facilitator. She has been with the Olean Center for eleven years. She is currently working to match clients with mentors who will help them get integrated into the community. With a goal of eight mentors, she has five of them in place and encouraged any of our members who feel inclined to do so to get involved.

Joe Nigrelli Receives Paul Harris Sapphire Joe Nigrelli has lived the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.” Last Monday night President Steve presented him with a Paul Harris Sapphire pin for his contributions to the Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation was established a hundred years ago to further the philanthropic and humanitarian efforts of Rotarians around the world. A Paul Harris pin is awarded to anyone who makes a $1,000 gift to the Foundation. Joe has been a regular contributor to the Foundation and this Award recognized this. Thank you Joe! You are a blessing.

Our Club Says Thank You to Nicole For the last year Nicole has greeted us with a smile each week as we gathered. In that time many of us got to talk with her and get to know her. This week we learned that Nicole has accepted a teaching assignment in Thailand. She will be leaving in the next week

to realize one of her dreams. We took up a collection and President Steve offered it to her as a small token of our appreciation.

Happy Occasions to Note Joe and Carol Potter were celebrating 62 years of marriage. Frank Celico, Roy Setsinger and Lori Lord all are celebrating birthdays this month.

Bill Felkner Explains Ballot Question 2 at our September 19th Rotary Meeting

In 1986 Rhode Islanders voted to amend the state constitution and establish an ethics commission that had authority to investigate and sanction all elected officials and public employees for conflicts of interest. Bill Felkner, speaking for Common Cause, explained how the whole plan got derailed by the courts and opened the gates for corruption to begin to seep in again. Question 2 gets at this issue and returns the ability of the Ethics Commission to do their job and protect us from corrupt officials. Bill did a great job of sharing the history of this movement and answering questions from the group. After he was finished, President Steve shared the fact that a book would be donated to the Westerly Children’s Library in his name as a remembrance of his visit.

Rotary Gives It Support to the Columbus Day Parade

President Steve presents a check to Joe Potter to show our support for the Columbus Day Parade Committee’s efforts. Westerly’s Columbus Day Parade is one of the biggest around and Joe and his committee work tirelessly to make sure it steps off without a hitch.

If you weren’t at the meeting, you can still support their efforts. On October 3rd there will be a Pasta Dinner at the Calabrese Club. You can get your tickets at the door.

District Governor Russ Bertrand sponsored the Motorcycle Run to End Polio and it raised $1,110.

Interact Club Plans First Gathering Wednesday, October 5th at the school Sunil shared with the club that the officers of the Westerly High School Interact Club met and set October 5th as their first meeting of the year. They will be inviting interested students to consider joining the club at that meeting.

Sunil invited us to come to the meeting to support the club if we are free. IT will be in the auditorium.

Pasta Dinner To Benefit Jonnycake Center’s Emergency Fuel Fund Set Dan Alvino has been working with the Westerly Lions Club, the Westerly Elks and Jonnycake Center to plan this year’s Pasta Dinner Benefit.

The date has been set: November 17th from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. at the Elks Hall. Tickets will be available in the next few weeks. We are hoping all Rotarians will sell some tickets and plan to join us for the event. We are responsible for serving.
