ABBOTSFORD MULTICULTURAL FESTIVALP R E S E N T E D B Y T H E A B B O T S F O R D N E W S

The sixth annual AbbyFest Multicultural Festival is set to get underway Sept. 21 at Abbotsford’s Ag Rec Building.The event is a showcase of diversity that celebrates the many cultures that make up this city and the province.School board trustee and community supporter Stan Petersen became involved in the festival last year, as stage manager for the various acts that performed.This year he decided to take a bigger role in or-ganizing the celebration and joined the board of directors.He said this year’s celebration will be similar to past events.“There’s not many changes this year. We are in a transition phase of course because Musleh, who is the founder and the main reason AbbyFest hap-pened, has moved out of town,” he explained.

Musleh Hakki founded the event back in 2008 as a way to educate the community about different cultures and the importance of multiculturalism.

Petersen said for the first time this year, the entire board has been charged with sharing all of the responsibilities to make the festival a success.“We expect it will be every bit as good as it has ever been,” he said.AbbyFest is important to Petersen because Abbots-ford is the “third most multicultural city in Canada” and he feels that needs to be celebrated.“It’s a one-day event that celebrates all cultures – anyone who wants to be involved.”People can expect to see cultural displays, informa-tion booths, clothing and entertainment.“You can expect some great entertainment. It’s on stage right from the beginning to the end of the day.”Acts this year include a Philippine dance group, Bhangra dancers, a Chinese cultural sword dancer, a UFV fashion show, German songs, a martial arts demonstration, Latin music, the Abbotsford Men’s

A lot of misunderstanding comes from just not knowing each other. And I think the more we get together and celebrate the different cultures we have in our community, the better understanding we will have of each other and the better we can live together.”Petersen said the goal is to keep building the event and make it bigger and better each year.“I’m an Abbotsford fan, always have been, always will be. We’re a very diverse community and I think we need to celebrate that fact regularly and I strongly believe in that.”

AbbyFest was designed to: Create awareness and understanding of racism and discrimination and take action to foster equal opportunities for all people;

Reduce or eliminate factors contributing to ex-clusion, disenchantment, and radicalization;

Encourages activities aimed at reaching society at large to facilitate inter‐cultural understanding and address the cultural and social exclusion of some communities;

Foster interaction between different communi-ties and support cross‐sector collaboration in community‐based projects to shape an inclusive and respectful society;

Support community‐based initiatives designed to facilitate inter‐faith dialogue and increase un-derstanding of the place of religion in Canada in order to combat ignorance and faulty assump-tions and foster constructive and informed dia-logues about multiculturalism, religions, racism, cultural diversity, and Canadian values.
