The children looked very excited as they jumped on the bus on Wednesday morning and laughed when I told them to make sure their teachers got plenty of sleep! I would like to say a very big thank you to all our teachers and to the parent volunteers who have attended with the children this week. It is a very big responsibility taking children on camp and also shows great dedication spending three days and nights away from their own families. I am looking forward to spending some time with the campers today as I drive up to Allambee for a visit. HEALTHY ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM: As many of you are no doubt aware, Nar Nar Goon Primary School has signed up for the Healthy Achievement Program which is a joint Federal and State Government initiative coordinated through the Cardinia Shire. This initiative focuses on the health and wellbeing of our whole school community under the following eight headings: 1. Physical Activity 5. Healthy Eating and Oral Health 2. Tobacco Control 6. Mental Health and wellbeing 3. Sun Protection 7. Safe Environments 4. Alcohol and other drug use 8. Sexual Health and Wellbeing We have a small committee who have commenced work on auditing our current practices and we have decided that we will start working on the areas of Sun Protection, Physical Activity and Tobacco Control. We are looking for parents who are willing to join us on this committee and help us become accredited in each of the eight areas of the program. If you think this is something you might be interested in please speak to either myself or Keira Haigh. Integral to the Healthy Achievement Programs’ success is the understanding that teachers and parents are role models for their children. You may have noticed for example the “No Smoking” signs that have been placed on each exit gate of the school and the fact that teachers wear hats whilst on yard duty when children are required to wear them. The Walk to School Safely program and Wheels Day are examples of the Physical Activity component in the program also. With these things in mind, could I remind parents of the dangers of smoking, particularly in cars while children are passengers. The impact of passive smoking is well documented and as such it is quite inexplicable that some adults would still put their children at risk in this way. TRAFFIC CONGESTION: The traffic engineer from the Cardinia Shire has visited our school site and will be replacing some old signs and making some small changes to the “No Standing” zones along Spencer Street. There will be a further designated no standing zone immediately beside the exit driveway from the football oval carpark in an effort to eliminate the congestion we are experiencing as buses try to turn left back into Spencer Street. I will notify you of these new signs when they are installed. However, in the meantime, I would ask again, that parents please allow enough room next to the driveway of the football club carpark to allow the buses room to make their left hand turns into the main road. Please make sure that if you are entering the football oval carpark that you do so at the scout hall end and exit at the tennis club end. Whilst there are no enter and exit signs, our traffic management plan stipulates that cars may only enter one way. Please be patient, look out for children as they meet their parents in parked cars and adhere to the 40kph restriction in place out the front of the school. ART SHOW: The children have been working industriously in their classes on items to display at our up and coming Art Show next Thursday. Please mark this night in your diary as along with the children’s Art displays we also have entertainment provided by the Pakenham Secondary College Music Department and of course, our PAFA will also be selling food and drinks for you to enjoy. There will be some fabulous Silent Auction items for you to bid on thanks to a small band of parents who have been requesting donations from local businesses- from gift certificates to household items and bottles of wine. If you are a Hawthorn supporter like myself, there is a fabulous framed and signed photo of Luke Hodge as one of the auction items. These will all be on display in the school foyer for the duration of the week next week leading up to the Art Show. Again, let’s hope the weather is balmy and we can have a great night-I hope to see you all there! Warm Regards; Mrs Fran Van Lambaart Please contact the fice ASAP if have n yet enrolled your child for next year OR if you are intending to leave the school at the end the year!

From The Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents and Friends; We are all hoping that everyone on the Grade 4 Allambee camp are having a wonderful time and that the weather holds out for them. The children

looked very excited as they jumped on the bus on Wednesday morning and laughed when I told them to make sure their teachers got plenty of sleep!

I would like to say a very big thank you to all our teachers and to the parent volunteers who have attended with the children this week. It is a very big

responsibility taking children on camp and also shows great dedication spending three days and nights away from their own families. I am looking

forward to spending some time with the campers today as I drive up to Allambee for a visit.

HEALTHY ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM:

As many of you are no doubt aware, Nar Nar Goon Primary School has signed up for the Healthy Achievement Program which is a joint Federal and

State Government initiative coordinated through the Cardinia Shire. This initiative focuses on the health and wellbeing of our whole school

community under the following eight headings:

1. Physical Activity 5. Healthy Eating and Oral Health

2. Tobacco Control 6. Mental Health and wellbeing

3. Sun Protection 7. Safe Environments

4. Alcohol and other drug use 8. Sexual Health and Wellbeing

We have a small committee who have commenced work on auditing our current practices and we have decided that we will start working on the

areas of Sun Protection, Physical Activity and Tobacco Control. We are looking for parents who are willing to join us on this committee and help us

become accredited in each of the eight areas of the program. If you think this is something you might be interested in please speak to either myself or

Keira Haigh.

Integral to the Healthy Achievement Programs’ success is the understanding that teachers and parents are role models for their children. You may

have noticed for example the “No Smoking” signs that have been placed on each exit gate of the school and the fact that teachers wear hats whilst on

yard duty when children are required to wear them. The Walk to School Safely program and Wheels Day are examples of the Physical Activity

component in the program also.

With these things in mind, could I remind parents of the dangers of smoking, particularly in cars while children are passengers. The impact of

passive smoking is well documented and as such it is quite inexplicable that some adults would still put their children at risk in this way.

TRAFFIC CONGESTION:

The traffic engineer from the Cardinia Shire has visited our school site and will be replacing some old signs and making some small changes to the

“No Standing” zones along Spencer Street. There will be a further designated no standing zone immediately beside the exit driveway from the

football oval carpark in an effort to eliminate the congestion we are experiencing as buses try to turn left back into Spencer Street. I will notify you

of these new signs when they are installed. However, in the meantime, I would ask again, that parents please allow enough room next to the

traffic management plan stipulates that cars may only enter one way. Please be patient, look out for children as they meet their parents in parked cars

and adhere to the 40kph restriction in place out the front of the school.

The Fundraising Committee will be holding a Silent Auction at the Art Show. We are asking the different grade levels to bring in items that we can use to make hampers that we will auction off. We would appreciate if your child could bring in something to go in to these. Prep and grade one: Party supplies. Grade Two: Chocolate and lollies. Grades three and four: Stationary Grades five and six: Sports/games/puzzles. We are also looking for donations of any new goods or services that we can auction. If you know of a business that might be able to help out please see Briony, Karen or contact Anne on 0408542827. Thank you to those people who have already brought in a donation or have approached businesses for donations for the auction.

Activate 2014 Walk, ride, scoot or skate to school in October & go in the draw to win!

Schools are invited to choose a date in October where they encourage all students to

actively come (walk, ride, scoot or skate) to school. All participating students receive a

raffle ticket which goes in the draw to win a GoPro action camera.

If students can’t actively come to school, x6 laps of the basketball court or 2 laps of the oval is OK.

Schools are also required to complete classroom calendars (hands up data), recording how students

came to school: walk, ride, scoot or skate (like Mobile March). All schools who complete the data will

automatically receive a scooter & helmet to use at their school as a prize.

Stay tuned to find out when your school will have its active day.
