I have been struck this year that many in this group of students only know life this side of 9/11. AVID Topics for SeptemberCampus Leadership Momentum toward College

Habits of a Successful StudentAt the beginning of the school year we have focused on students getting to know each other and their teachers. Leadership and Momentum are two topics we will hang onto like a steering wheel. We have discussed the Habits of a Successful Student, and will continue that theme throughout the year. Students have performed quick writing activities on these topics, have stood before their peers, delivering their thoughts verbally—a powerful exercise that helps to develop confidence, clarify thinking, and focus learning.

History Topics for SeptemberRise/Fall of Rome Byzantine Empire

The Growth of Islam

In September we will finish our study of Rome, which includes the early Byzantine Empire, and will begin our study of Islam. In so doing, students have had the opportunity to read, discuss, take notes, summarize, ask and answer questions, analyze primary sources, debate, write an essay, make a city, graffiti, watch some fantastic videos, and develop culinary skills while making authentic Roman pizza (They tasted a little like paper, but we’ll get better!).
