“Do I have a deal for you! Do this, and you’ve got it made for life! No more debts to anyone for anything!” Now that I’ve got your attention listen to St. Paul’s pitch to the Romans. You’ll find it in this weekend’s second reading. All you must do, says St. Paul, is love one another. The hitch is that it requires your whole heart, your whole soul, your whole mind, and every minute of your time. That’s all. God will provide the necessary grace to accomplish it. This gift comes from God through the Holy Spirit and the community. You’ll find more specifics about love in our other readings as they describe our prophetic vocation to be reconcilers.
The media is regularly showing examples of this whole-hearted love in those who have taken time to assist their neighbors as they live through the effects of Hurricane Harvey. We join in this effort by contributing to this weekend’s second collection to assist those in Texas and Louisiana. Your generosity is truly appreciated.
The Lord told Ezekiel: “I have appointed you watchman for the house of Israel.” It would be one thing if that simply meant that Ezekiel was to tattle on the people. That con-versation could have stayed between God and him, leaving God to handle the consequences. Ezekiel could also have taken the watchman’s role as the license to gossip, telling everybody but the perpetrators how bad the bad guys were. But, no, his role was to speak directly to offenders and challenge their behavior. Prophets are called to make the profound love of God understood. They continue by not only calling people to love God but also, they call peo-ple to love their neighbors in their daily activities.
Reminder, on Wednesday of this week, September 13, we will celebrate the 5th Apparition that the Blessed Mother made to the children of Fatima. A plenary indulgence is attached to this service. Please see elsewhere in the bulle-tin for more details.
May we continue to act in love.
Thank you to all who participated in the Harvest Home parade! Thank you to those who are serving as our Pasto-ral Council: Nikki Webber (Chairperson); Mike Wright (Vice chair); Mary Franzosa (Secretary); Martha Kelly, Jim Muenchen and Si Leis.
Have a blessed week! Fr. Len

OUR LADY OF LOURDES, CINCINNATI, OH SEPTEMBER 10, 2017
The 100th YEAR OF THE FATIMA ANNIVERSARY
The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to
the three children of Fatima, Lucia,
Francisco, and Jacinta, on the 13th of
the months of May through October,
1917. Pope Francis has granted a plenary
indulgence to those who honor Our
Lady of Fatima on the 13th of the
months—May through October where
her statue is reverently displayed and
prayers are said for the Holy Father’s intentions. A Plenary
Indulgence remits all temporal punishment due to past
sins previously forgiven in the sacrament of Reconcilia-
tion. There are three ways to obtain this indulgence:
1. Visit the original site at Fatima, Portugal on the
designated days
2. Pray before any statue of Our Lady of Fatima
“The pious faithful who visit with devotion a statue
of Our Lady of Fatima solemnly exposed for public venera-
tion in any church, oratory or proper place, during the days
of the anniversary, the 13th of each month from May to Oc-
tober (2017) and there devoutly participate in a celebration
or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary.”
3. The Elderly and Infirm
These individuals can pray in front of a statue of
Our Lady of Fatima and must spiritually unite themselves to
the jubilee celebrations on the days of the apparition, the
13th of each month, between May and October, 2017. They
also must “offer to merciful God with Confidence, through
Mary, their prayers and sufferings or the Sacrifices they
make in their own lives.”
(To obtain the plenary indulgence, the faithful must
also fulfill the ordinary conditions 21 days before or 21
days after: to go to confession and Communion, be inte-
riorly detached from sin, and pray for the intentions of
the Holy Father. The indulgence can be for one’s self or a
loved one in purgatory).
*************************************************************
The Our Lady of Fatima statue will be displayed in the
sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes Church Wednesday,
September 13 from 9:00 AM to Noon. Please use this
time to honor our Blessed Mother and to obtain the
plenary indulgence granted by our Holy Father, Pope
Francis.
TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
CATECHETICAL SUNDAY______________ Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, along with parishes throughout the United States, will celebrate
Catechetical Sunday on September 17. This annual event spotlights the importance of the formal teaching ministry of the Catholic Church. Those who have responded to the call to the ministry of catechesis will be commissioned for their ministry with a special blessing at the 11 a.m. Mass. Please pray for the men and women, who by their lived example and sharing of the Church’s teaching, draw us closer to Jesus Christ. These include the teachers in our parish school and religious education pro-grams and the leaders of the Children’s Liturgy of the Word. Catechetical Sunday is also a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel.
LITURGY OF THE WORD WITH CHILDREN RESUMES ON SEPT. 24
Beginning Sunday, September 24, at the 11 a.m. Mass, children in grades 1-3 will again have the opportunity to participate in Liturgy of the Word with Children. After the Introductory Rites of the Mass, Father Len or Father Paul will invite the leaders of Children’s Liturgy of the Word and the chil-dren who wish to participate to come forward to stand in front of the sanctuary. The priest will then dismiss the leaders and children to the Archive Room. The leaders will proclaim the Scripture read-
ings, engage the children in reflections, and lead the Prayer of the Faithful (petitions) in language children can more easily un-derstand. Children return to sit with their parents as the collection is taken up. Please encourage your children to take ad-vantage of this service which helps them to understand the Liturgy of the Word at their level. Please contact Kristina Krimm, Director of Religious Education, at [email protected] or at 347-2646 if you have any questions.
OUR LADY OF LOURDES, CINCINNATI, OH SEPTEMBER 10, 2017
